Game 3 brings big-time revenge angles

The Lakers and Magic head to Orlando to resume their NBA Finals? series, with Game 3 coming Tuesday night. Judging by the numerous angles focused on the concept of revenge, we should expect the Magic to climb back into the series in a lower scoring game. Take a look at some of these revenge trends as we preview the game, then head on over to the GAME MATCHUP page for more key betting information. Orlando is a 4-1/2 point favorite, but according to the Sportsbook.com Betting Trends, only 52% of bettors are leaning that way, a low percentage for this magnitude of a game.

By now everyone knows the Lakers head to Orlando with a 2-0 lead, but if the Magic?s botched layup/missed goaltending call at the end of regulation had been scored, this series would be tied 1-1. That is all the difference in the world according to history, as only three teams have ever come back from this deficit to win the NBA Finals, most recently the Miami Heat in 2006.

The ?comfortable? lead has not changed Kobe Bryant?s focus however. Bryant has a promise for Game 3 on Tuesday night.

"We're about to kick it up," he said. "You'd better believe it. We're close. You see what I'm saying? This is the finals. We're going to be ready to go."

Courtney Lee missed a wide-open, alley-oop layup that would have won Game 2 at the fourth-quarter buzzer Sunday night. It was another chapter in a long history of Magic misery, one that now has them 0-6 in finals games.

Orlando has been able to come back from seemingly every heartbreak this season - injuries, four last-second losses in the playoffs and series deficits in two rounds. But this could be too tough a challenge.

"We've just got to go home and take care of business," Magic center Dwight Howard said. "The Lakers did a good job of protecting their home, and now it's our turn to do the same thing. We've been in some tough situations. We've just got to fight our way out."

The Magic would need quite a turnaround. Their backcourt has been dreadful. Rafer Alston and Jameer Nelson, who returned for the finals after being out since early February because of shoulder surgery, were so inconsistent that Van Gundy benched them for most of the fourth quarter to have 6-foot-10 forward Hedo Turkoglu run the point.

The Magic had 20 turnovers, just 22 assists and no true ballhandler to make the Lakers pay for double-teaming Howard.

Don?t consider the series over yet however. One of the streakiest teams in the league all season, Orlando has shot well at home. It plays with a carefree attitude, and Bryant says that's reason to be wary.

"This is a very loosey-goosey team we're playing against," he said. "You seen some of the shots they hit. Those are tough shots - supposed to be tough shots. For them it's like shooting fish in a barrel. They're just thinking about Game 3, and so are we."

One of the key handicapping concepts backing the Magic for Game 3 is REVENGE. Orlando boasts several Top StatFox Power Trends focused on this motivation. Including the Game 2 Magic ATS win and UNDER result, here are a few of the revenge angles that will be in play for Tuesday?s Game 3:

ORLANDO is 33-11 ATS (+20.9 Units) revenging a same season loss vs opponent over the last 2 seasons. The average score was ORLANDO 102.2, OPPONENT 93.9 - (Rating = 3*)

ORLANDO is 13-3 ATS (+9.7 Units) revenging 2 straight losses where opp scored 100 or more points over the last 3 seasons. The average score was ORLANDO 100.9, OPPONENT 100.5 - (Rating = 1*)

ORLANDO is 28-13 ATS (+13.7 Units) revenging a road loss vs opponent over the last 2 seasons. The average score was ORLANDO 101.6, OPPONENT 95.0 - (Rating = 1*)

The Lakers have been a solid bet as a road dog though. Over the last two seasons, they are 24-12 ATS in that role.

In terms of the total, revenge for Orlando may also play a role in taking this game UNDER the posted number of 198:

ORLANDO is 26-15 UNDER (+9.5 Units) revenging a road loss vs opponent over the last 2 seasons. The average score was ORLANDO 101.6, OPPONENT 95.0 - (Rating = 1*)

Tip time is set for 9:00 PM ET on ABC.

By now you probably have watched the Game 2 replay of Orlando?s Courtney Lee missed layup attempt numerous times. The bucket would?ve given the Magic a 90-88 victory and knot the NBA Finals at 1-1. Instead, the second installment went an extra five minutes and the Lakers captured a 101-96 decision in a game they tried to give away in every aspect.

While Lee?s potential game-winning bucket on television looked like an easy bunny, other angles showed that it was a tough shot, especially with the Lakers? Pau Gasol defending the rim. Some pundits believe that Gasol goaltended on the play, sticking his hand through the rim. According to the NBA rules, a goaltending call cannot be made unless contacting the rim has a clear effect on the shot.

Regardless of Lee?s misses, the Magic still had the extra session to show they belonged on this stage and unfortunately they succumbed to Purple and Gold. The Lakers outscored the Magic 13-8, and nine of the points came from the free throw line. Gasol led the charge in overtime, scoring seven of his 24 points.

Kobe Bryant finished with 29 points and eight assists and Lamar Odom added 19 big points off the bench for the Lakers. Orlando?s Rashard Lewis led all scorers with 34 points, while Hedo Turkoglu added 22 points and Dwight Howard filled the stat sheet with 17 points and 16 rebounds.

Gamblers now turn their attention to Game 3 on Tuesday from Away Arena, where Orlando has posted a solid 7-2 straight up and 6-3 against the spread record in the playoffs. On the year, the Magic own a 39-11 SU and 29-21 ATS record, winning by an average of 10 points per game (101-91).

In the Lakers? four losses outside of Staples Center, the team has been clubbed in three of the setbacks and lost the other on a jumper by Utah?s Deron Williams. With that being said, if you fancy the Lakers, the right wager might be on the money-line (+170) rather than the point-spread.

It appears that the oddsmakers have tossed out the first two games of the best-of-seven series after opening Orlando as a four-point home favorite for Game 3.

****, the top percentage NBA handicapper believes the number is fair, considering the play of the Magic. He said, ?Orlando's failure in Game 1 was more the case of an abysmal shooting performance rather than Laker domination. The Magic managed to shoot just under 30 percentage from the field in a game they led 33-28 midway through the 2nd period before disintegrating.?

?Game 2 saw the Magic guards combine on 5-of-23 from the field while amassing 20 turnovers as a team. The biggest issue with the Magic has to be their mindset, and in particular point guard Rafer Alston, who has been a key contributor in the playoffs, but has been woeful on combined 3 of 17 shooting. The coach (Stan Van Gundy) has lost confidence in the nine-year pro as he has repeatedly tinkered with the lineup throughout, opting to go without a point guard in the latter stages of Game 2, and with the game on the line.?

Van Gundy not only surprised *** but a lot of folks with his rotation. In Game 2, J.J. Redick played 27 minutes, more than Alston and Jameer Nelson. The former Duke standout was a dreadful 2-of-9 from the field, including 1-of-6 from 3-point land, which is his supposed specialty.

It appears the Nelson experiment hasn?t worked for the Magic and Van Gundy, who likes numbers, should look at the facts. Against the Cavaliers, Orlando was 4-0 when Alston averaged double digits and 0-2 when he didn?t. And that includes a 19 PPG average in the team?s three wins at home versus Cleveland too.

Another solid trend helping Orlando and perhaps bettors is the club?s ability to rebound after back-to-back losses. The Magic have only lost three games once all season, a skid that happened in late April and to its defense, the team was missing Howard and two other starters in the third straight setback.

*** added, ?In spite of the subpar play, the Magic were an alley oop away from taking control of the series. If the Magic settle down and play up to their potential they should take two of three at home over a Lakers team that is vulnerable away from Staples as the Jazz, Nuggets and certainly the Rockets have proven.?

Even though Game 2 had bonus time, it?s fair to say that the majority of the minutes have been unwatchable at least from an offensive standpoint. Total players have watched the ?under? go 2-0 through the first two games and the closing numbers haven?t been threatened.

****, who is an expert (64%) in ?over/under? bets, commented on the total drop. He said, ?At 199, and down from 206.5 in Game 1, the total has seen a sharp adjustment due to the depressed scoring in the first two games. If you take away the overtime, the 175 and 176 points scored in regulation would make a strong case for the under, though it could easily be argued that the Magic will perform better at home from an offensive standpoint, especially given L.A.'s defensive lapses on the road, which could send the game over the soft number.?

Only three teams have ever rallied back from a 0-2 deficit to win the NBA Finals. In 1969, the Boston Celtics defeated the Lakers in seven games. Portland bounced back from a 0-2 hole to Philadelphia in 1977 to win four straight games behind Bill Walton. And just recently, the Miami Heat also captured four consecutive victories in the 2006 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks.

Gamblers believing Orlando can hold serve at home and eventually become the fourth team to pull off the feat can back the club on an adjusted series price of plus-600 (Bet $100 to win $600).

Game 3 is slated to tip off at 9:05 p.m. EDT, with ABC providing national coverage.

After tonight?s showdown in the Magic Kingdom, the two teams will meet in Game 4 on Thursday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -History, not just the Los Angeles Lakers, is against the Orlando Magic.

Only three teams have ever come back from an 0-2 deficit to win the NBA finals. In 1969, the Boston Celtics did it against the Lakers in seven games. In 1977, Portland trailed Philadelphia before winning four consecutive games. In 2006, Miami dropped the first two games to Dallas before winning four in a row.

Sunday night's game was the first to go to overtime since Game 5 in 2006, when the Heat beat the Mavericks 101-100 behind Dwyane Wade's 43 points.

Just like Orlando, the Celtics, Trail Blazers and Heat lost the first two games on the road. The Magic lost 100-75 in Game 1. The series resumes Tuesday.

``The Lakers did a good job of protecting their home, and now it's our turn to do the same thing,'' Dwight Howard said Sunday night. ``We've been in some tough situations. We've just got to fight our way out.''

The Magic advanced to the finals by beating Boston in the Eastern Conference semifinals and Cleveland in the finals, winning Game 1 both times.

``I've seen series turn,'' Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said. ``We've got to go home and play a great game in Game 3 and get the win.''

---

LEWIS GOES OFF: Instead of losing in overtime, the Orlando Magic could have been blown out for the second straight game.

Rashard Lewis wouldn't let them.

Lewis kept the Magic in it until Hedo Turkoglu and Dwight Howard finally started playing well, but the Magic fell short and lost 101-96 to the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 Sunday night.

Lewis scored 18 of the Magic's 20 points in the second quarter and finished with a career playoff-high 34 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. His six 3-pointers were one shy of the all-time single-game mark, tied last year by Boston's Ray Allen.

``I wanted to be aggressive early on in the game, if not get shots for myself but create shots for other guys, and I was able to do that,'' Lewis said.

Early on, the Magic were threatening to duplicate their dreadful offensive performance from their 25-point loss in the opener. Orlando shot only 32 percent in the first half, barely above its 30 percent mark on Thursday, and got only seven combined points from Howard and Turkoglu.

Yet the Magic trailed by just five at the break because of Lewis' brilliance. He was 8 of 12 for 20 points in the first half after going only 2 of 10 in all of Game 1.

``We made it a good game, but unfortunately didn't get the win,'' Lewis said. ``When you lose a game like that, the stats doesn't really mean anything.''

---

NELSON'S REDUCED MINUTES: Magic point guard Jameer Nelson only played seven-plus minutes in the fourth quarter and sat out overtime.

``Whenever we get our minutes, no matter who it is, we go out and play. Nobody's complaining about minutes or moping,'' Nelson said. ``It was coach's decision. Everybody wants to be out there and everybody can't. I'm not complaining it.''

J.J. Redick played 27 minutes for the first time since the Eastern Conference semifinals, when the Magic beat Boston. Nelson totaled 16 minutes Sunday.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said all his guards struggled.

``Our guards were 6 for 26. L.A.'s defense was good, but I thought our guards for the most part had very good open looks,'' he said. ``For the most part, we just couldn't knock anything down.''

Redick finished with five points on 2 of 9 shooting. He missed an open 3 in overtime and turned the ball over when attempting to get a pass into Dwight Howard.

CALL HIM SKIPPER: Phil Jackson the baseball coach?

That's right. Jackson's first coaching job was as a baseball coach when he went to school at the University of North Dakota in the late 1960s.

Jackson liked the job, but found basketball to be more of a challenge.

``Jerry Reinsdorf always used to say, well, it's probably more difficult than coaching baseball because you've always got to make a move. Every single move is another chess situation for you,'' said Jackson, referring to the Chicago White Sox owner as well as his former boss with the Bulls.

No disrespect to Joe Torre of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the all other baseball managers out there.

``I definitely follow the major sports' championships, and I think that Joe's low key manner is something to what I have. He seems to be able to take everything in hand, also handle the players' personalities I think is a big part of that,'' Jackson said.

---

BANK SHOTS: Stan Van Gundy was hired as Magic coach two years ago Sunday. ... The Lakers' Derek Fisher hit two 3-pointers Sunday, giving him 37 for his career in the finals. He trails only former Laker Robert Horry (53) and Michael Jordan (42). ... There was a moment of silence before Game 2 for Randy Smith, the former Buffalo Braves All-Star who died Thursday at 60 after a heart attack.

L.A. Lakers at Orlando Magic

L.A. Lakers at Orlando Magic

L.A. Lakers at Orlando Magic

Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic (-4, 198): Matchup and trends

Line movement

The line opened -4 at most shops, but some were also giving the Lakers 3.5 points before moving up with the rest of the pack to 4. The total has moved down a point from 199 to 198 at most books.

The series

The Magic are a Courtney-Lee layup, or Pau Gasol goaltending call, from being tied up 1-1 in the Finals, but many experts believe that Orlando?s chance to win the series has vanished. Just three teams in Finals history have come back to win the championship after dropping the first two games on the road ? although the last to do it was the Sunshine State?s other NBA team.

That five-point overtime win in Game 2 was the first time the Lakers hadn?t covered since losing Game 4 of the West finals. The extra five minutes allowed the Lakers to reach the century mark for the eighth game in a row. The under has cashed in six of those eight games, including both games against Orlando.
Orlando has won four playoff games in a row at home and has covered in each.

This will be L.A.?s first game east of the Mississippi since April 1. That might not seem like a big deal, but the Lakers? internal clocks could be a tad off with the longer travel and time change.

Unique lineup

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy went with an unusual lineup down the stretch in Game 2. While point guards Rafer Alston and Jameer Nelson combined for 43 minutes of play, Van Gundy didn?t have a point guard on the floor late in the game. Instead 6-foot-10 Hedo Turkoglu was at the controls for much of the fourth quarter.

Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis were much better in Game 2 than the series opener. Certainly if the pair combine for 56 points again as it did Sunday, you can expect a Magic victory. The two forwards were 9-for-18 from 3-point range, while the rest of the Magic were 1-for-12.

Don?t automatically expect the Magic to shoot better just because they are at home, as both their overall shooting percentage and 3-point percentage are worse in Orlando than on the road in the playoffs. The team is averaging more than four points more per game at Amway Arena than on the road in the postseason, however.

Gasol coming up big

There?s probably little chance that anyone other than Kobe is named Finals MVP if the Lakers win the series, but an argument could be made that Pau Gasol has been the best player in the Finals.

The Spaniard struggled last year against Boston in the Finals but has been stellar against the Magic. He had 24 points (seven in overtime) and 10 boards in Game 2 and his defense on Dwight Howard has been terrific, usually just with single coverage.

"I think I've improved physically to be able to hold my ground a little better,? Gasol said to reporters. ?Last year, I felt like I fell short at the end. I ran out of strength, I ran out of energy and couldn't deliver the way I wanted to.?

Sharp money moves line and total for Game 3

Sharp money moves line and total for Game 3

Sharp money moves line and total for Game 3

Los Angeles Lakers (79-23 SU, 52-49 ATS) at Orlando Magic (71-32 SU, 62-41 ATS)

Line/Total: We opened the Magic at +3.5 and we quickly took sharp action laying the 3.5, so we went directly to +4. Since going to +4, we've booked great two-way action on the game. We're barely long on the Magic, with about 52 percent of the money on the Magic.

As for the total, we opened at 199 and again sharp action has bet it under. Sharps have backed the under in the first two games of this series and they've won the money each time. While we moved from 199 to 198, we've booked more action on the over. At this time, 60 percent of the money is on the over.

Series Price: With the Lakers up 2-0 in the series, we've installed them as -800 favorites to win this series. Teams are 27-3 when leading 2-0 in the NBA Finals. The Magic have a tough hill to climb and almost have to win all three games in Orlando. Also note, the Lakers have not lost three games in a row since acquiring Pau Gasol, making it even more daunting for the Magic to take all three games at home.

Key Injuries: No injuries to report.

Prop of the Game: Dwight Howard (Magic) Total Points ? (Must Start) 20.5 Howard averaged 20.6 points a game during the regular season and 21 points during these playoffs. But he has struggled versus the Lakers in this series, only scoring 12 and 17 points in Game 1 and 2 respectively. But now he's playing at home where he's averaged 24.4 points a game in these playoffs and scored 40 points his last time on this floor.

Comments: Obviously, the Magic blew a golden opportunity to even this series in Game 2. Courtney Lee's missed game-winning layup completely changes the complexion of this series. If the Magic would have won that game, the series price would be around Lakers -160, not -800. That's how big that loss was to the Magic.

It will be very interesting to see how the Magic respond off such a devastating loss. This has been a resilient team all year, but they haven't faced this kind of adversity before and this is a young and inexperienced team.

The Magic are 6-3 ATS at home in these playoffs and have won and covered their last four games on their home court. The Lakers are 3-3 ATS on the road in these playoffs, but were 2-1 both SU and ATS in their three road games in their last series versus the Nuggets.

Both games in this series have gone under the closing total and if it weren't for overtime in Game 2, neither game has come close to going over. Game 1 only had 175 points, going under 206. Game 2 had 197 total points, going under 202.

Total drops again for Game 3 of Finals

Total drops again for Game 3 of Finals

Total drops again for Game 3 of Finals

How low can it go?

Like a limbo bar the over/under number continues to drop in the NBA Finals. From 205.5 in Game 1 to 198 in Sunday?s Game 2, the number for Game 3 in Orlando opened at 198, falling faster than David Ortiz?s projected homer total.

We were warned. The signs were everywhere as the Finals started:

Orlando was a poor over bet all season, covering the number only 36 of 82 times, and just 15 times at home.

The Lakers weren?t much better at 42-39 during the season, and have been on an absolute tear on the under of late. L.A. went under the last three games of the Utah series, finished below the total five of seven times against both Houston and Denver, and now has two unders against Orlando.

This is nothing new for the Lakers, who covered the over only eight times last year in 21 playoff games. In 2007-08, the O/U on the Lakers averaged 227 in four opening-round games against the defensively-challenged Nuggets and gradually melted into the low-190s range against Boston, the best defensive team in the league last season.

NBA playoff series are played at a crawl compared to the regular season and Covers Expert Steve Merril warns bettors not to forget this trend.

?Keep in mind playoff basketball is usually more defense oriented and about 2-to-3 points lower than regular season games,? says Merril, who advised his clients to play in the under in the Finals opening match.

In Game 1 the 205.5 over had a puncher?s chance at halftime, and the Lakers fulfilled their part of the bargain with a 29-point third period. But Orlando couldn?t adjust to Los Angeles double-teams on Dwight Howard in the third period and scored only 15 points. The final 12 minutes were played to comply with NBA rules, as the Lakers had the game and the under was a lock.

With a 15-15 first period, players of the over in Game 2 had lost their money by 8:30 p.m. EST. Even a 21-point overtime period never seriously threatened the 202 over.

?Most of the sharper money has been coming in on the under,? says Jay Kornegay, executive director of race and sportsbook at Las Vegas Hilton. ?But by game time the general public bet the over so much we needed the under. So far we adjusted the total four points after each game.

?That is a pretty significant adjustment.?

So what to expect in Game 3 Tuesday in Orlando from two teams which combined are averaging less than 22 points a quarter in regulation play? With the public loving the over as much as ever and the books loving the money that comes in from bettors jumping on the O, who?s to say that 198 is even still too high?

Oddsmaker Peters Childs at Belmont.com points out that the Magic scored a total of 53 points in the third and fourth quarters of Game 2 and figures that with the series moving to Orlando, the Magic might be even more inclined to open the throttle a bit.

?Plus,? says Childs, ?even (Lakers coach) Phil Jackson said after Sunday night?s game that he expects a wide-open Game 3.?

In Las Vegas, oddsmaker Pete Korner noted that the Game 1 line of 204 was quickly bet up to 206 and, after the low score in Game 1, the Game 2 number was set at 202 and remained steady.

?Then,? says Korner, ?we dropped Game 3 to 199.?

Orlando and Cleveland topped the over five of six times in the Eastern Conference finals, even though the number opened up at 184 and eventually topped out at 192.5 for Game 6. The Cavaliers defense, ranked No. 1 in the NBA during the regular season, put up far less of a fight against Orlando than the Laker defenders have. Only once in L.A. has Orlando been able to score more than 24 points in a period.

Thirty-five percent shooting from the field won?t win a lot of playoff games and the Magic figure that number will improve as the series shifts to Florida ? assuming the Game 2 OT loss did not sap too much energy from an Orlando team that seems to have lost its mojo.

Most every offshore and Vegas book lists the number at 198 (with the Purple and Gold getting 4), and with only one day off between Games 2 and 3, there is not a lot of time for it to move. betED.com is offering another half-point (198.5) for under players, and 97.5 for the first half only. Sports Book manager Randy Scott reports that bettors hit the over hard in Games

(1-W) Los Angeles Lakers (2-0) at (3-E) Orlando Magic (0-2), 9 p.m.

- Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy came up with an illusion that would have made Penn and Teller proud in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday.

With the game deadlocked at 88 and just 0.6 seconds left in regulation, Orlando's mentor pulled a rabbit out of his hat.

There wasn't a soul in Staples Center that thought Van Gundy would call Courtney Lee's number with the game on the line so he rolled the dice.

Checking Lee, Kobe Bryant thought he had the final 0.6 seconds off, fell asleep and got caught on a back screen. Hedo Turkoglu lofted a tremendous inbounds pass over the incredibly long Lamar Odom to a wide-open Lee. All the rookie needed to do was deposit the layup and celebrate.

Instead, Lee's attempt was too strong.

The rest is history. The Lakers and Paul Gasol dominated the overtime period to earn a 101-96 win and take a commanding 2-0 series lead. Now, things shift to central Florida and the Magic Kingdom tonight with Orlando in desperation mode.

Gasol scored seven of his 24 points in the extra session on Sunday and also finished with 10 rebounds. Bryant scored 29 points and dished out eight assists, none bigger than one that led to a crucial three-point play by Gasol to cap a seven-point LA run in OT.

Lamar Odom tallied 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Lakers, who also took the opener, 100-75, on Thursday and then sank their last 14 foul shots on Sunday to hold on for the win.

"We wanted to win this game just to keep the pressure on them," said Odom. "Both teams want this. It was tough for us last year, getting embarrassed in Boston. I guess with this win, we kind of kept that pressure on. But we still have to take care of business."

Rashard Lewis poured in 34 points for the Magic, while Turkoglu added 22 points in defeat. Dwight Howard totaled 17 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks. Howard also had four steals, but accounted for seven of Orlando's 20 turnovers. That led to 28 Lakers points.

"Twenty turnovers, especially when you're not shooting it great, makes it very difficult," said Van Gundy. "When I look at these numbers, it's amazing to me that this was an overtime game. I can't quite figure out how it was looking at these numbers."

Lewis also had 11 rebounds and seven assists while shooting 12-of-21 from the field.

The Magic, who have never won a Finals game, had a chance to get over the hump for the first time.

Turkoglu buried a long-range jumper just before the shot clock was set to expire, giving Orlando an 88-86 edge with 47.7 seconds left. Gasol then scored inside for the Lakers 14 seconds later, but Lee couldn't get anything to fall down the stretch for Orlando. First, he drove past Gasol into the lane with the shot clock running down, but the ball clanked off the back of the rim.

Odom got the rebound with 9.1 seconds left, and out of a timeout, Bryant drove to the lane, but his shot was blocked from behind by Turkoglu. That gave Orlando the ball back with 0.6 seconds left.

Turkoglu then tried the inbounds lob to Lee, who got behind the defense, but the alley-oop layup didn't fall as time expired.

"It was a good play, it was a good pass," said Lee. "Coach did a good job of drawing up the right play. I caught it, got a good look at the backboard. I tried to get it up there as quick as possible, and the ball rolled off the rim."

Gasol admitted a defensive lapse by the Lakers, but they caught a break.

"I was obviously relieved when he missed that shot because it could have been a heartbreaker, and right now we could be in a totally different situation," said Gasol. "I was surprised he was kind of wide open. But I tried to contest it as good as I could, and then we gave ourselves a chance to win the ball game."

Now, the hill Orlando must climb to get back in this series is starting to loom larger than Mount Everest. LA is a gaudy 38-1 in franchise history when they have a 2-0 series edge.

The 2-0 advantage marks the 13th time and the fifth straight season in which the home team has won the first two games of The Finals since the NBA went to a 2-3-2 format in 1985. In 11 of the previous 12 instances, the home team winning both Game 1 and Game 2 has gone on to win the NBA Championship with the lone exception coming in 2006, when Dallas won the first two games at home but lost the next four straight to Miami.

In NBA Finals history, a team with a 2-0 edge has triumphed in The Finals 31 times, with only three teams ever coming back from an 0-2 deficit to win the title, the 1969 Boston Celtics (against LA), the 1977 Portland Trail Blazers and the 2006 Heat.

Meanwhile, Jackson, who is aiming for his record 10th NBA championship as an NBA coach, is a perfect 43-0 in the postseason when his team wins Game 1 of a set, and the Magic are now 0-for-6 in NBA Finals games.

Van Gundy is at a loss.

"We played with no point guard, we played conventionally, we had Rashard (Lewis) at the three, we played Hedo at the one, two and three. We played Rashard at the three and four. We played big, we played with no point guard," Van Gundy said. "What do they say? Just keep throwing stuff at the wall and hope something sticks."

The series will remain in Orlando for Game 4 on Thursday.

"We've just got to go home and take care of business," Howard said. "The Lakers did a good job of protecting their home, and now it's our turn to do the same thing. We've been in some tough situations. We've just got to fight our way out."

In the shadows
Kobe Bryant has changed his look.

Gone is the teeth-baring, nose-flaring, eyes-on-the-prize scowl
that the Los Angeles Lakers star showed again and again in Game
1 of the NBA finals. The intensity diminished after Game 2, his
expression morphing into one of relief and sheer luck.

A botched layup by Magic rookie Courtney Lee is perhaps the
biggest reason why these finals are not tied and why Bryant
isn't smiling even with his team up 2-0. That level of
seriousness might be cause for Orlando to grimace.

The Magic nearly returned from Los Angeles with the
best-of-seven series tied. Instead, they're down 2-0, and now
Bryant has a promise for Game 3 on Tuesday night.

"We're about to kick it up," he said. "You'd better believe it.
We're close. You see what I'm saying? This is the finals. We're
going to be ready to go."

For all the bravado, the Lakers can be careless, a team with
holes and an inability to finish off an opponent as a champion
must. They let Houston extend a series despite the absence of
Yao Ming. Denver outmuscled and outhustled a Lakers team that
seemed to lose its enthusiasm until Game 6 of the conference
finals.

Los Angeles believes those days are over.

"We're playing tougher," forward Pau Gasol said. "We understand
what it takes to go get the championship."

This is a franchise closing in on its 15th title. It is facing
Magic team still searching for its first finals victory. Bryants
insists this is no time to get comfortable.

"What's there to be happy about?" he asked. "The job's not
finished."

The Magic have had their shots - one in particular - to change
the series.

Lee missed a wide-open, alley-oop layup that would have won Game
2 at the fourth-quarter buzzer Sunday night. It was another
chapter in a long history of Magic misery, one that now has them
0-6 in finals games.

Call it the "alley-oops." This mistake, however, might hurt the
most.

Orlando has been able to come back from seemingly every
heartbreak this season - injuries, four last-second losses in
the playoffs and series deficits in two rounds. But this could
be too tough a challenge. Only three teams have won a title
after losing the first two games in the finals, most recently
Miami over Dallas in 2006.

"We've just got to go home and take care of business," Magic
center Dwight Howard said. "The Lakers did a good job of
protecting their home, and now it's our turn to do the same
thing. We've been in some tough situations. We've just got to
fight our way out."

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy led the Heat to start that 2005-06
season before stepping aside. He was still on the Heat payroll
helping Pat Riley from afar.

"Dallas never won another game," Van Gundy said. "You know,
series can change."

The Magic would need quite a turnaround. Their backcourt has
been dreadful. Rafer Alston and Jameer Nelson, who returned for
the finals after being out since early February because of
shoulder surgery, were so inconsistent that Van Gundy benched
them for most of the fourth quarter to have 6-foot-10 forward
Hedo Turkoglu run the point.

The Magic had 20 turnovers, just 22 assists and no true
ballhandler to make the Lakers pay for double-teaming Howard.
With Nelson coming off the bench in place of reliable reserve
Anthony Johnson and Alston having already said he wasn't pleased
with his minutes in Game 1, Van Gundy might face another
dilemma.

"We were just trying to see if we could get somebody out there
who would make shots off of the double teams and off the
pick-and-rolls and things like that," Van Gundy said. "I thought
our guys fought hard, but we couldn't make enough plays. And the
20 turnovers crushed us."

The Lakers know the Magic, too, could change in a moment.

One of the streakiest teams in the league all season, Orlando
has shot well at home. It plays with a carefree attitude, and
Bryant says that's reason to be wary.

"This is a very loosey-goosey team we're playing against," he
said. "You seen some of the shots they hit. Those are tough
shots - supposed to be tough shots. For them it's like shooting
fish in a barrel. They're just thinking about Game 3, and so are
we."
