Orlando the favorite in uphill battle

Based on Friday?s accounts of Game 4 between Los Angeles and Orlando, Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy should have been the lead story at the top of every newscast and .com website, since he alone is the reason Orlando failed to tie the series at 2-2 and reportedly killed his team?s chance to be NBA champions. One problem with that thinking, it?s often incorrect. Did Van Gundy error, likely so, he should have had his players foul at almost any point in the final 10.8 seconds, but give Los Angeles a ton of credit, as they perfectly executed out of bounds play that led to Derrick Fisher?s game-tying shot in regulation.

Van Gundy didn?t have the luxury of calling timeout when Jameer Nelson decided to play zone against Fisher at most critical point, in a game known for man defense. Van Gundy played a hunch and he?s being crucified, but let?s not lose sight of another important factor, with 32 seconds remaining in overtime, the score was tied at 91. At that juncture, both teams were still in position to take the game, the Lakers snatched it and the Magic did not.

Van Gundy should be blamed for playing Nelson, when his best option was Rafer Alston, good or bad. It was evident from the first time Nelson took the court in the series, two to three minute stints would be the most useful way to utilize player who hadn?t seen the court in four months. Van Gundy?s trust or lack of in Alston betrayed him and his team fell to 40-12 and 29-23 ATS as home.

Orlando is 21-8 ATS revenging a home loss vs opponent, but unless they do all the little things (keep in mind everything counts), they won?t improve that record. Reports had Dwight Howard choking for missing two free throws late; however he just reverted to being Superman shooting kryptonite as he had done much of the season. Missing 15 of 37 attempts from the charity stripe will cause almost any team to lose and the 17 turnovers led directly to 16 L.A. points.

The Magic find themselves in this predicament because they failed to match Lakers intensity in second half and scored a grand total of 42 points in last 29 minutes. Orlando is 14-5 ATS when playing with two days rest this season and has to play like a team that is absolutely desperate. Feed the ball into Howard, who must be decisive and go to the basket with authority. When he has the ball for more then two seconds, evil events often occur (seven turnovers in last contest), Howard has to be powerful and demanding.

Van Gundy has to somehow convince Alston he?s his guy (good luck) and get him mentally back into focus. Rashard Lewis is the only player in the Finals that makes Lamar Odom look a bastion of mental rock-solid stability. Wouldn?t you like to know where these players go during games? It appears Lewis should have sugar levels tested frequently throughout any given.

Orlando has again opened as 2.5-point favorites at Sportsbook.com to send the series back to other coast, with total at 199. The Magic have liked Sunday?s well enough, sporting a 9-3 ATS record and are 9-1 UNDER after a game where they made 60 percent of their free throws or less this season.

What makes this a challenging wager is the Lakers mindset. They haven?t always brought A-game on the road this postseason. The purple-clad team from L.A. has been a brilliant road underdog, with 11-3 ATS record this season and Kobe Bryant assuredly will have his mad face on, trying to win a championship and not have to share the limelight with a star player of equal status, giving him an argosy of tales and memories to cherish. The Lake Show hasn?t been as profitable on Sunday?s with 3-7 ATS record and is 13-3-1 UNDER on this day of the week.

It will be interesting to watch Van Gundy, does he continue to play his hunches or go more by the book, unless the players execute, either way can be wrong. Game 5 starts at just after 8 Eastern, with the underdog now 8-1 against the spread when these teams compete against one another.

Lakers-Magic, Game 5

Lakers-Magic, Game 5

Lakers-Magic, Game 5

There?s been a lot of talk about Kobe Bryant?s legacy in recent weeks, but that?s a discussion for another day. Coming out of Thursday?s Game 4 win by the Lakers in overtime at Orlando, the only thing to talk about is one of the classiest guys in the NBA, Derek Fisher.

It was Fisher who was the catalyst in Los Angeles taking a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals with a 99-91 victory over the Magic at Amway Arena. The Lakers took the cash as two-point road underdogs, while the 190 points stayed ?under? the 202-point total even though the game went to an extra session.

With L.A. trailing 87-84 with 11 seconds remaining, Dwight Howard had a chance to put the game on ice. However, he missed a pair of free throws to give the Lakers life. And Fisher wouldn?t let the opportunity slip away.

When the Magic immediately doubled Bryant, he gave the ball up to Trevor Ariza, who threw cross-court to Fisher as he came across half court. With Jameer Nelson inexplicably giving Fisher plenty of room, the veteran guard pulled up for a deep trey that tickled nothing but twine with 4.6 ticks remaining. Orlando?s Mickael?s Pietrus misfired on a tough look at the end of regulation.

Howard?s misses at the charity stripe were costly, but Howard wasn?t the only one struggling from the line. The Magic missed 15 free throws. Hedo Turkoglu, who had a team-high 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor, was off the mark three times in four free-throw attempts in the last 5:06 of regulation.

With the game knotted at 91-91 in OT, Bryant was doubled as he backed Pietrus down on the low block. When the double team came, Bryant found Fisher at the top of the key and he was able to step into another trey that found all net. Fisher?s go-ahead 3-pointer was the dagger.

He came into the league the same year as Bryant, a product of Arkansas Little Rock from out of the Sun Belt Conference. He?s been the consummate professional from day one. In fact, you could call him the Anti-Kobe. When Shaq and Kobe had their problems during a four-year run of trips to the finals, Fisher was always the voice of reason.

With the exception of one year spent in Utah, Fisher has been with Bryant every step of the way. In 2004 with the Lakers and Spurs tied at 2-2 in Game 5, San Antonio went up one with less than a second left on an improbable 3-pointer from Tim Duncan.

The remarkable shot by Duncan seemingly had turned the series, but L.A. still had a chance in-bounding from half court. With most expecting the Lakers to go to Shaq or Bryant for a potential game winner, it was Fisher that came off a screen clean. He took the pass and went up in one motion for a high-arching fadeaway jumper as the horn sounded. The shot got no rim and Fisher sprinted off the court a victor. The Lakers put the Spurs away in Game 6 back at Staples Center.

More than a decade after Fisher and Bryant came into the league together (along with UConn?s Travis Knight as well), they are poised to collect a fourth career NBA championship ring.

They?ll get that chance Sunday night in Orlando on ABC at 8:05 p.m. Eastern. Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened the Magic as a two-point favorite with a total of 197. As of early Saturday afternoon, most books had Orlando as a three-point ?chalk? with the total increased to 198 ?. Bettors can take the Lakers to win outright for a plus-130 return (risk $100 to win $130).

In Game 2, the total for Howard?s rebounds was 15 and went ?over? when had 16 boards. In Game 3, the total was adjusted to 15 ? and ?under? backers cashed when Howard had just 14 rebounds.

Bryant had 32 points in Game 4, allowing ?over? backers at Sportsbook.com to cash tickets since his total was 31 ?. His prop for points has been in the 31 ?-32 ? range throughout the series.

Sportsbook.com also offered adjusted lines for Game 4. If you took the Lakers at minus 3 ?, you brought home a plus-160 payout (paid $160 on $100 wagers).

For Game 5, Sportsbook.com once again has adjusted numbers. If bettors are bullish on Orlando, a huge payout can be had. The offshore website has the Magic at minus 8 1/2 for a plus-170 return. On the flip side, gamblers can take the Lakers laying 3 1/2 points for a plus-190 payout.

Perhaps the books took a beating on 'over' bets for Howard's rebounds in Game 4? I say that because I haven't been able to find a shop (although I'm not implying it won't be available between now -- Saturday afternoon -- and tip-time Sunday night) with a total for Howard's boards. Instead, a few spots are packaging his points and rebounds together at a total of 35 1/2. If you ask me, that's a smart move by the books. Howard's made free throws have a total of 7 1/2 at Sportsbook.com.

--Robert Horry is the career leader in 3-pointers made during the NBA Finals with 56. Michael Jordan is second with 42 trifectas. Third? That would be Mr. Fisher with 40. He could pass Jordan before these Finals are over.

--With L.A. leading 3-1, most books aren't offering an adjusted series price. However, Sportsbook.com has the Lakers as the minus-2500 'chalk' (risk $2,500 to win $100 -- yikes!), while Orlando is plus-900 on the comeback (paid $900 on $100 wagers).

--Bryant's adjusted odds to win NBA Finals MVP honors are identical to the Lakers' number on the adjusted series price (a way-too 'chalky' minus-2500). Gasol has plus-800 odds to take the award, while Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza have 40/1 odds. Fisher is a part of the 20/1 field bet.

--Here's a Game 5 prop I like: Rafer Alston's points to go 'over' 10 1/2 points (per Sportsbook.com as of late Saturday afternoon). SURELY Van Gundy will give Alston the minutes he deserves Sunday night?! But even if Alston does only get 25 or so minutes, I still think this goes 'over.'

--Sportsbook.com has a wager available for what team LeBron James will play for in 2010-2011. The Cavs are the even-money favorites, while the Knicks have plus-200 odds. New Jersey had a plus-350 number and the Pistons are the longshots with plus-550 odds.

--The ?under? cashed on Howard?s made free throws (8 ?) in Game 4.

--Orlando assistant coach Patrick Ewing has been signed to an extension.

Jackson fined $25,000 for ref comments
June 13, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The NBA has fined Lakers coach Phil Jackson $25,000 for criticizing the officials during Game 4 of the finals.

The league also penalized the Lakers $25,000 on Saturday for Jackson's comments, which came during an interview with ABC between the first and second quarters of their 99-91 overtime victory Thursday.

Jackson said there were some ``bogus'' calls after the Lakers' Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum each picked up two fouls in the first quarter.

Howard: Magic will force finals back to L.A.

Howard: Magic will force finals back to L.A.

Howard: Magic will force finals back to L.A.
June 13, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Dwight Howard has his bags packed.

Showing off an it's-not-over-yet smile and a confident attitude, the Orlando Magic center said Saturday that the NBA finals will be headed back to Los Angeles. The Magic are down 3-1 to the Lakers but want to ``make history,'' starting with Game 5 on Sunday in their final home game of the best season in franchise history.

``You want me to get up here and say the season is going to be over tomorrow? That's not what anybody should do or anybody should think,'' Howard said. ``I believe that we're going to be going back to L.A.''

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy wanted to make sure his team didn't lose hope.

So he called players in for a rare day-after-game meeting Friday to make sure his team had moved on from its Game 4 meltdown. Van Gundy, who hardly ever gives speeches or motivational pep talks, delivered one at the meeting about Greg LeMond's come back in the 1989 Tour de France he hopes will light a spark.

``He had come from behind and then taken the lead and then lost it on one of the late stages, and people started to write him off,'' Van Gundy said. ``And at the end of the stage he looked beaten, and he and his wife were talking when they left, and they asked his wife what he had said.

``And he said, 'It'll just make the story all that much better when I come back and win it all.'''

The Magic's challenge might be just as difficult.

But Van Gundy doesn't want his team to believe they can win Game 5 unless they first believe they can still win the championship. That would take a record rally - no team in 29 previous tries has won the title after being down 3-1 in the finals.

``I think when you're in this situation, the key thing is do you still believe you can win the championship?'' Van Gundy said. ``If you don't think you can go to L.A. and win the championship, then even though you're saying one game at a time, it's pretty easy to let go if things aren't going well.''

Orlando has had a season filled with rallies.

All-Star point guard Jameer Nelson went out with a shoulder tear in February. The Magic lost on two buzzer-beaters in the playoffs, twice rallied from a series deficit, won a Game 7 in Boston and knocked out MVP LeBron James and the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers.

Winning three straight against the best-in-the-west Lakers is another story. Even so, the Magic believe they can be the first team to mount such a comeback.

``Why not?'' Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu asked.

It would take a big turnaround.

The Magic had 17 turnovers, missed 15 free throws and fell apart on defense in their Game 4 loss. The Lakers exposed their point guard struggles and clamped down on All-Star Rashard Lewis, who had just six points on 2-of-10 shooting from the field.

Howard's missed free throws followed by Derek Fisher's 3-pointer to force overtime left Orlando devastated. The Magic scored only four points in OT, struggling to find their rhythm.

But the past has meant little before with Orlando.

The Magic, a streaky team that can dazzle one minute and disappear the next, have been able to rally from tough losses simply by making baskets if their potent shooters can get hot. Orlando shot a finals-record 62.5 percent - and 75 percent in the first half - in its Game 3 win after missing a chance to take Game 2.

But this is the Magic's last chance to show their resiliency. There will be no more bounce-back games if they lose, only elimination.

It's a challenge they welcome.

``We want to try to make history,'' Howard said. ``We've done a lot of things this year as far as a team and individuals and reaching a lot of different goals and breaking records and stuff like that, so why not try and do something else?''

Sunday's best NBA bet

Sunday's best NBA bet

Sunday's best NBA bet

Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic (-3, 198.5)

After a day to decompress following L.A.'s 99-91 overtime win in Game 4, both teams practiced on Saturday at Amway Arena, which because of the 2-3-2 format, will be hosting its final game of the season. The Magic, who have been written off several times in these playoffs, have faith that they can become the first team in finals history to overcome a 3-1 deficit.

The first 29 failed.

''We know what's ahead of us,'' said Orlando center Dwight Howard, whose frightful free-throw shooting (6-of-14) in Game 4 hurt the Magic. ''We know what's been said and the situation that we're in. We won't stop believing.''

The Lakers understand what's at hand. They don't want to give life to an Orlando team that has come back before. One year after losing in the finals to Boston, Bryant and his teammates want to finish the job.

Pick: Los Angeles +3

NBA Finals Game 5

NBA Finals Game 5

NBA Finals Game 5

Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic (-3, 198.5)

The betting line

The Magic opened as 4-point favorites, but that line was quickly bet down to -3 and now bettors are starting to see -2.5 pop up at various venues.

Orlando was favored by 4.5 points in Game 3 but only 2.5 points in Game 4. That Game 4 line actually closed at -1.5.

The total didn't stay north of 200 for long. Early money came in on the under, moving the number down to 198.5 where it current resides.

That's two points lower than Thursday's Game 4.

The Fisher king

?He?s been there before."

That was Kobe Bryant's take on Derek Fisher following Game 4.

Were it not for Fisher's late-game heroics, we would be discussing a 2-2 series right now.

Was Fisher wholly responsible or was it just another case of Orlando proving its naysayers right.

The knock on the Magic has been their inability to close. On Thursday, they let a 12-point halftime lead completely dissolve in the third quarter before rallying in the fourth.

But it was all for not as they blew a 5-point lead in the final minute of the game and collapsed in the late stages of overtime.

Typical is the word that comes to mind.

Not dead yet

Dwight Howard doesn't think his team is finished.

?There?s no reason for us to hold our heads down,? Howard told the media following Game 4. ?We will believe until there?s no more games to be played.?

Head coach Stan Van Gundy didn't sound so optimistic.

?This is the toughest one because it puts us down two games and on the brink of elimination. The mood (in the locker room) was very somber."

Finding their shots

It?s obvious by this point that in order to win another game in this series, the Magic are going to have to shoot the lights out.

They shot better than 62 percent in their only victory and even that was a monumental struggle as the winning margin was only four points.

The Lakers couldn't have shot much worse in Game 4, connecting on just 38-of-91 FG attempts, yet they still managed to win the game.

That's the mark of a champion, finding a way to win, even when you're not at your best.

On the rebound

If there's one thing the Magic can hang their hat on, it's their ability to bounce back.

Orlando is 7-2 straight-up, and since their second round series against Boston, 5-1-1 against the number after a loss.

The Lakers were 1-9 ATS after a win through the first two-plus playoff rounds, but have since straightened things out.

They're 3-1 SU and 2-1-1 ATS in their last four games following a victory.

Weekend Betting Preview

Weekend Betting Preview

Weekend Betting Preview

The Orlando Magic only have themselves to blame. And the Los Angeles Lakers have Derek Fisher to thank.

With a chance to even the NBA Finals series at two games apiece, Orlando's Dwight Howard ? who otherwise had a wonderful game ? missed two free-throws late in Thursday's Game 4 that would have nearly iced down a Magic victory. Fisher then canned a game-tying 3-pointer with four seconds left, and later hit what turned out to be a game-winning trey in overtime as Los Angeles stole a 99-91 decision to take a 3-1 series lead.

So the Magic will be looking to extend the season to at least a Game 6 when the teams meet for Game 5 Sunday night in Orlando (8 pm ET, ABC).

The Lakers may be up three games to one in this series, but two of those victories have come in overtime, and each of the last three games could have gone either way. And after LA won Game 1 in a blowout, the underdogs on the BetJamaica.com NBA betting lines have covered the pointspread each of those last three games.

Also Thursday, for the second time in this series, a game stayed under its total despite going to overtime. Through regulation Thursday, the game was tied at 87, which had it 27 points below the BetJamaica.com over/under of 201. The teams then combined to score just 16 points in the extra session, bringing the totals to 1-3 so far in this series.

With Howard ? who grabbed 21 rebounds and set a new Finals record for blocked shots with nine ? hitting just six of 14 shots from the line Thursday, the Magic cost themselves by missing 15 free-throws on the night, seven alone in the fourth quarter.

Orlando held a 12-point lead at halftime Thursday, but it only took the Lakers the first half of the third quarter to rally and take the lead. Then, after falling down by six early in the fourth, the Magic came back, and after a couple of hoops by Hedo Turkoglu they owned a five-point lead and the ball with a minute to go. But all that was just setting the stage for Fisher's heroics.

Orlando beat the Lakers both times the teams played during the regular season, by scores of 106-103 and 109-103. And Magic guard Jameer Nelson played a large part in those victories, leading Orlando in scoring both games and dishing out 13 assists. But Nelson, after missing the last two-plus months of the regular season and the entire Eastern Conference playoffs with a shoulder injury, has been no factor coming back for the Finals ? scoring just 14 points and tallying 10 assists in the four games total.

Rafer Alston, after coming over from Houston in a February trade, has performed admirably in replacement of Nelson. But it appears Nelson's return has thrown Orlando's chemistry off a bit, which is always a possibility in situations like this.

The two teams combined to make 71 of 165 FG attempts Thursday, and on the series as a whole, the teams together have shot just 42% from the field.

The totals are now 7-15 in Lakers games this playoff season, 10-13 in Magic games.

If the Magic win Sunday, the teams will head back to Los Angeles for a Game 6 Tuesday (9 pm ET, ABC) and, if necessary, a Game 7 Thursday (9 pm ET, ABC).

Bettors should check back at BetJamaica.com for a line and total, and numerous proposition offerings, on Game 5 as tip-off approaches.

(1-W) Los Angeles Lakers (3-1) at (3-E) Orlando Magic (1-3), 8 p.m.

(1-W) Los Angeles Lakers (3-1) at (3-E) Orlando Magic (1-3), 8 p.m.

Resiliency has been the Orlando Magic's mantra this postseason.

Stan Van Gundy's team suffered heartbreaking loses against Philadelphia, Boston and Cleveland earlier in the playoffs but always had the answer.

Now, after a second overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Magic will have to become the most resilient team in NBA history in order to stave off elimination tonight at Amway Arena and come back to win the franchise's first NBA championship.

The Lakers took a commanding 3-1 advantage in the series on Thursday when veteran guard Derek Fisher sank a pair of clutch three-pointers, one to force overtime and another in the extra session to give Los Angeles the lead for good, as the Lakers overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to earn a 99-91 triumph.

On 29 other occasions a team has trailed 3-1 in The Finals. None of them has ever overcome the deficit.

"We know what's ahead of us," Orlando's star center Dwight Howard said. "We know the situation that we're in. We won't stop believing."

Kobe Bryant, who is searching for his fourth championship and first without former teammate Shaquille O'Neal, led the way in Game 4 with 32 points, eight assists and seven rebounds as LA captured a hard-fought victory in its quest for a 15th NBA championship.

Meanwhile, coach Phil Jackson now stands on the doorstep of a record 10th championship as an NBA coach. Jackson, who was fined $25,000 by the league on Saturday for publicly criticizing the officials in Game 4, will surpass the legendary Red Auerbach for the most titles in history with a win tonight.

"They say it takes four games to win and I just don't want to even talk about anything like that until there's a done deed," Jackson said.

Trevor Ariza, who was held scoreless in the first half Thursday, caught fire down the stretch, burying a trio of three-pointers and ending with 16 points. Pau Gasol, who battled foul trouble, also came up big late, finishing with 16 points and 10 boards.

The Lakers have now followed up each loss in this year's postseason with a win, compiling a 7-0 record in such a spot.

"On a championship run you're going to have moments where you just make big plays, and tonight was one of them," remarked Bryant after Game 4. "The guys stepped up. That's what the journey is about. You've got to have guys step up and make those big plays."

Orlando's second-half letdown spoiled a superb performance by Howard, who posted 16 points, 21 rebounds and a Finals record nine blocks. The All-Star did, however, commit seven of the team's 19 turnovers and sank just 6-of-14 at the free throw line with some untimely misses.

Hedo Turkoglu hit 8-of-13 field goals for a team-high 25 points and Mickael Pietrus logged substantial minutes off the bench, scoring 15 points, but missed a potential game-winning shot in regulation off an inbounds play with 4.6 ticks left.

Rashard Lewis, instrumental in Orlando's success throughout its playoff run, was just 2-of-10 for six points.

"This is the toughest one -- it puts us down two games and on the brink of elimination -- obviously everybody very, very disappointed," said Van Gundy. "The emotions are very raw. I didn't say much of anything afterwards."

The Magic were in a position to even the series and had an 87-84 edge with just 10.8 seconds remaining in Game 4. With their season hanging in the balance, Van Gundy made the critical decision not to foul before the Lakers attempted a three-pointer.

Left virtually unguarded, Fisher got the ball in the back court, calmly dribbled up the right side and buried a three over Jameer Nelson with 4.6 seconds left. Much like Game 2, LA then dominated the overtime period to take the comfortable 3-1 series lead.

Van Gundy was sick after the game over the decision not to foul and turn the final seconds into a free-throw shooting contest.

"It was my decision with 11 seconds not to foul," Van Gundy said. "Yes I regret it now, but only in retrospect. I mean, normally to me 11 (seconds) is too early. You foul, they make two free throws, [they] cut it to one [and] you're still at six or seven seconds."

Solid logic but specious since Jackson and his staff made one whopper of a mistake coming out of the timeout that should have made Van Gundy's decision to foul a no-brainer.

Jackson thought the Magic had a foul to give, meaning his team would get the ball out of bounds again after a foul, taking precious seconds off the clock. They didn't.

The poor bookkeeping by PJack's staff resulted in Jackson instructing his team to take the ball out in their backcourt to create space to hopefully avoid a foul that wasn't coming. By taking the ball in the backcourt, it took the Lakers time to get into scoring position. .

If Van Gundy had picked up on Jackson's miscue and ordered his players to foul, the Lakers likely would have had a pair of free throws with under six seconds to go, making things awfully tight even if Orlando, which hit just 59 percent (22-for-37) from the charity stripe in the game, came up empty at the other end.

"That one will haunt me forever," Van Gundy said. "When they took it full court (shaking his head)... I'll have to go back and look at that."

Even Van Gundy's bother, ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy, criticized his brother's decision on the television broadcast.

LA, which won the first two games of the set before dropping Game 3, is a gaudy 38-1 in its franchise history when they have taken the first two games of a seven-game series.

The early 2-0 advantage for the Lakers also marked the 13th time and the fifth straight season in which the home team has won the first two games of The Finals since the NBA went to a 2-3-2 format in 1985. In 11 of the previous 12 instances, the home team winning both Game 1 and Game 2 has gone on to win the NBA Championship with the lone exception coming in 2006, when Dallas won the first two games at home but lost the next four straight to Miami.

In NBA Finals history, a team with a 2-0 edge has triumphed in The Finals 31 times, with only three teams ever coming back from an 0-2 deficit to win the title, the 1969 Boston Celtics (against LA), the 1977 Portland Trail Blazers and the 2006 Heat.

Meanwhile, Jackson is a perfect 43-0 in the postseason when his team wins Game 1 of a set.

Game 6, if necessary, will be back in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
