Sunday Night Baseball Betting Preview

On Sunday night in Cleveland, the pitcher with the best interleague winning percentage will square off with the hitter with the best average in interleague play. The other starter is also a former Cy Young Award winner. There will be plenty of intrigue when the Indians send Cliff Lee to the mound to face Albert Pujols, Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Lee (3-6, 3.17 ERA, 1.409 WHIP) has already doubled his loss total from last year?s Cy Young Award-winning season, but the Indians usually don?t lose when he faces the NL. He is 11-2 with a 3.42 ERA in 19 career interleague outings, and that .846 winning percentage is the best for any pitcher with at least 12 decisions.

Cleveland (28-36, -8.8 units) is 14-5 in the left-hander?s interleague starts, and Lee is 5-0 with a 3.62 ERA in eight career home starts versus NL foes. He has faced the Cardinals (34-29, -0.5 units) once, earning a 10-3 road win on June 26, 2006, by giving up two runs over six innings. Lee and the Tribe are 21-8 in June during his career.

That marks the only time Lee has pitched to Pujols, who went 1 for 2 with a walk. The St. Louis superstar is the all-time leader in interleague batting average at .355 (155 for 437) with 30 homers and 100 RBIs.
?He?s a special player,? Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said. ?He?s probably the best hitter in the game right now. That?s not something you say very lightly.?

Wedge is speaking from experience after the Indians failed to contain Pujols on Saturday when he recorded his 27th multihomer game and fourth this season with two solo shots in a 3-1 victory. The reigning NL MVP also homered Friday night and is 7 for 16 with four homers and six RBIs in his last four games after breaking a 0-for-14 streak.

?I just use same game plan as in the NL and if it doesn?t work, then I try to figure it out,? Pujols said. St. Louis comes into this game 12-4 (+11.4 Units) against the money line in road games after five straight games where they stranded seven or less runners on base since 2007.

Cleveland is hoping Lee can stop Pujols? homer binge. In his last start, Lee allowed four runs over six innings Tuesday and did not get a decision in an 8-4 win over Kansas City.

Carpenter (4-0, 1.23, 0.705), meanwhile, is 7-9 with a 4.85 ERA in 23 interleague starts, including 2-3 with a 5.31 ERA since joining the Cardinals in 2004. St. Louis is 15-4 when Carpenter starts a Game 3.
The right-hander missed a month of action after straining his left rib cage muscle while batting, but hasn?t shown any effects of it on the mound.

The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner threw a three-hitter two starts ago on June 4 in a 3-1 win over Cincinnati, and did not receive a decision Tuesday at Florida after allowing three runs over six innings in a 4-3 loss.
Carpenter has faced the Indians just once in interleague play, allowing one run over seven innings and not getting a decision June 28, 2006, in a 5-4 victory. He is 2-2 with a 5.96 ERA in seven starts and nine career appearances against them.

Sportsbook.com has Cleveland as -106 money line favorites in what should be a highly competitive contest, with the total Un7.5. Though Lee has pitched well all season, he and Indians are 1-8 when playing against a team with a winning record this season, averaging 2.8 runs per game. The Tribe is 7-0 UNDER in home games vs. a starting pitcher who gives up 5.5 or less hits a start this year, with average score 5.7 RPG. St. Louis is a mere 6-13 on the road versus left-handed starters and 19-9-2 UNDER when those two factors are in play.

First pitch will be just after 8 Eastern, with Cleveland having won seven of last 10 meetings.

Power Line ? Indians -113

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Chris Carpenter (4-0, 1.23) Cleveland - Cliff Lee (3-6, 3.17)

In what is the only major league game on the prime-time docket tonight, the St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians will collide in the rubber match of a three-game interleague series.

Yesterday, Albert Pujols' power display and Brad Thompson's impressive performance on the mound led St. Louis to a 3-1 win over the Indians at Progressive Field.

Pujols finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, giving him 22 on the season to match San Diego first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Philadelphia left fielder Raul Ibanez for tops in the majors. It was Pujols' fourth multi-homer game of the season and the third straight contest in which he has gone deep.

Yadier Molina had two hits and Skip Schumaker scored the other run on a wild pitch for the Cardinals, who have won three of four after dropping their previous five games.

Thompson (1-2) allowed just three hits and one unearned run with two walks and five strikeouts in his six-plus inning start. Four relievers combined to keep the Indians off the board in the final three frames, with Ryan Franklin closing the door in the ninth for his 15th save.

"I had a lot of pitches where I missed my spot and I got away with some stuff," Thompson said. "It was nice to come out and have a good outing."

Victor Martinez drove in the lone run for Cleveland, which had won two straight. Tomo Ohka (0-1), making his first start in over two years, gave up two runs on seven hits over seven innings to take the loss.

Ohka is the 10th starting pitcher used by the Indians this year. His last start came on June 6, 2007 as a member of the Blue Jays.

When Chris Carpenter is healthy, he is one of the best pitchers in baseball. In the seven games he has pitched this season, the St. Louis hurler is 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA, and he will be on the hill tonight. He has struck out 34 batters and walked only six in 44 innings. The 6-foot-6 hurler is coming off a no-decision against Florida on Tuesday.

Carpenter is 2-2 with a 5.96 ERA in his career against Cleveland.

There is no question that Cliff Lee's 3-6 record is disappointing, especially considering how brilliant he was on the hill last season. Still, the Cleveland ace owns a 3.17 ERA, proof that he has thrown the ball better than his record indicates.

Lee, who will oppose Carpenter tonight, allowed four earned runs on 11 hits in six innings against Kansas City on Tuesday and didn't factor in the decision.

Lee won his only previous start against St. Louis, which came at Busch Stadium on June 26, 2006.

The Indians lead the all-time series versus the Cardinals, 11-5, including a 5-2 mark in Cleveland. The teams had last met in 2006 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, with the Tribe taking two of three matchups.
