HORSE RACING
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $55,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up

M One Rifle - Was flattered by Grazen who has won a stakes since; Bruce Headley babies improve with racing.

D C Tapit - Like the turn back in distance to this elongated sprint; best stride will come in the stretch.

Long Shot - The Usual Q. T.

Race 2 - 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $36,000, Claiming 432,000, 3-year-olds and up

Cee Bargara - Has been the recipient of some weak rides; claimed by O'Neill, big switch to Garrett Gomez.

My City by the Bay - Speedy sort takes a big class drop to face these; problem is he's not big on winning.

Long Shot - Carman

Race 3 - 5 furlongs, Purse $55,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds

Hurricane Ike - You have the edge of watching the tote board for clues; many FTS, we'll see who can run.

Lions Story - FTS from the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; Joel Rosario won five races on Saturday.

Long Shot - Winter Camp

Race 4 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $38,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up

Lang Field - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low level; has obviously slowed a step.

Yankee Bay - Another sliding down the claiming ladder to a win now or never level; figures to fire late.

Long Shot - Maroon

Race 5 - 5 furlongs, Purse $55,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds

Roman Counsel - Ran a winning race for this level last time; speedball plays catch me if you can.

Roos On the Loose - Interesting race experience including a stakes at Golden Gate; figures to get overlooked.

Long Shot - Baltic Point

Race 6 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $66,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 4-year-olds and up

Temple City - Lost in a stakes quality field last time; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.

Cavanal - Convincing win last time, capable of doing it again; gets the red hot Joel Rosario to ride.

Long Shot - Lockford

Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up

Bad Boy - Small edge in one of the toughest races on the card; wins for Mike Mitchell, then is dropped in class.

Self Insured - Been knocking on the door, now Eddie Truman switches to Rafael Bejarano; will be grinding late.

Long Shot - Justcruise

Race 8 - 1 1/4 miles (turf), $700,000 American Oaks, Filies, 3-year-olds

Mrs Kipling - Value pick at 6/1 odds, she fits well with these; the winner will need a perfect trip.

Gozzip Girl - She has really found a home on grass; rail skimming ride for KJ, she fires every time.

Long Shot - Rare Ransom

Race 9 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up

River Echo - I'm a big Julien Leparoux fan; he'll settle early and finish fast in the lane.

Phantom Wildcat - Like the turn back in distance from a route for this; tactical speed to sit a trip.

Long Shot - Spirit of Cochise

Race 10 - 7 furlongs, $300,000 Triple Bend Handicap, 3-year-olds and up

Rebellion - Julien Leparoux should suit his running style to a T; among many who will be flying late.

Noble Court - Ack Ack win was flattered by chasing an impossibly fast pace; the target will be Zensational.

Long Shot - Paul's Hope

Race 11 - 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Bouncer - Good middle move in first start in 7-months; figures to move forward today for Gary Mandella.

Sure Nice - Speedball could not overcome post 14 in last; also in return off a 8-month sabbatical.

Long Shot - Tribal Fire

Best Bet - Cee Bargara (race 2)

Hollywood Park Saturday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/6/$36.00; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.20

Hollywood Park Totals - 765/187/$1,339.00; Long Shots, 383/64/$670.60; Best Bets, 43/18/$79.80

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #6 Dixieland Star (7/5) in race 3 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Warrior's Reward ran third at Belmont Park paying $2.10 to show. Stats - 96/77/$568.00

At the Gate -- Sunday

At the Gate -- Sunday

At the Gate -- Sunday

Saturday was just one of those days I?d like to forget.

Sure, I turned a profit with my top picks thanks mainly to Dantastic ($20.80) in the seventh race at Belmont Park, but things sure went south in the stakes races.

At Belmont Park, Warrior?s Reward got left at the gate and mustered just a third place finish as the 4/5 favorite. My top pick Gabby?s Golden Gal was anything but golden in the Prioress Stakes, checking in dead last at 5/2.

Then my top pick Asiatic Boy could only finish in the runner up spot behind Dry Martini in the Suburban Handicap.

When Presious Passion opened up a 20-length lead in the early going of the United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park, I was feeling good.

Surely he was going to tire, right?

No, he held on to win by two lengths over Lauro, the exacta returning $89.80.

My top pick Spice Route checked in fourth and my second choice Court Vision was a disappointing sixth, perhaps the most overrated older horse in training right now.

Maybe we?ll catch some fireworks for our bankroll today.

Sunday?s feature at Belmont Park is the Tom Fool Handicap, and it is an intriguing match up between Munnings and Fabulous Strike.

Fabulous Strike has won 13 of 22 career starts and is coming off a sharp win in the True North, and is considered one of the top sprinters in training.

Munnings faces older for the first time today after a dazzling performance in the Woody Stephens at Belmont Park on June 6.

The colt is coming off back to back career top efforts and appears to have a real future in the sprint division, and I am going to give him the edge in the race.

Here is today's opener from Belmont Park to get our day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $35,000 (1:00 ET)
#1 Try to Fly / #1a Sly 7/2
#7 Lemon Shore 6/1
#8 Caesar Beware 3/1
#2 Dragon Fi 6/1

Analysis: #1 Try to Fly is making his first start since February as well as his first career start on turf. The five-year-old drops into an easier spot after facing Alw-4 optional claimers in his last start. He has landed in the exacta in 9 of his 14 career starts and now returns off a nearly a five month break for the Tony D. barn that is 18% winners with horses coming back off a 61-180 day layoff. He has a decent enough turf pedigree, by Trippi (6% first turf) out of a Kris S. mare that has dropped two other runners but no turf winners. Entry mate #1a Sly regressed last out when shipped to Monmouth after a game hard fought effort two back where he was beaten just a neck here for this tag over ground labeled as good. The gelding has landed in the exacta in all four trips over the turf here and figures to bounce back here in his third start of his current form cycle.

#7 Lemon Shore went gate to wire to beat $25K non-winners of three last out over good ground. The gelding is stepping into open company here but likes the turf here (8-3-3-1) and is proven over ground with some give to it. The gelding comes in here sharp for a barn having a slow meeting, and the price figures to be decent enough to toss him in the mix.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 5/2 or better.
EX: 1,7 / 1,2,7,8
TRI: 1,7 / 1,2,7,8 / 1,2,5,7,8

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 9 Tom Fool Hcp. G2 (5:17 ET)
#4 Munnings 2/1
#1 Fabulous Strike 6/5
#5 Driven by Success 3/1
#2 Riley Tucker 8/1

Analysis: #4 Munnings bobbled coming out of the gate, had to wait behind runners on the far turn, and when Johnny V. unleashed this guy he finished huge to win the G2 Woody Stephens by 5 1/4 lengths, earning a career top. Two back he ran a good second to the talented Warrior's Reward. The $1.7 million son of Speightstown makes his third start of his current form cycle and just needs to see the ML fav in here feel some heat in the early going.

#1 Fabulous Strike dueled for the early lead through sharp fractions and held on well to win the G2 True North. The only start where this guy did not find his way into the exacta since '07 was in the G1 BC Sprint. He owns the edge in early and mid pace numbers and has won 4 of 6 over the main track here. If he gets some heat from #5 Driven by Success that might be enough to set things up for our top pick.
