Sports leagues sue to block betting
The Associated Press

Friday, July 24, 2009 | 8:10 a.m.

The four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA plan to sue to block Delaware from implementing sports betting.

An official from one of the leagues tells The Associated Press the suit will be filed in federal court in Delaware on Friday. The official requested anonymity because the filing was still pending.

Congress banned sports betting in 1992 but grandfathered four states _ Delaware, Nevada, Montana and Oregon _ that had already offered it. This week, a lawyer representing major league baseball, the NFL, the NBA, the NHL and the NCAA wrote to Delaware Gov. Jack Markell's office challenging the state's plan for single-game betting.

In the letter, obtained by the AP, the lawyer said Delaware's plan would violate the '92 law because such betting was never available before.

More wagers...more interest?

I don't understand the reason why these leagues fight this stuff?

Because they're not getting a piece of the pie.

Alot of other states are looking at this because they want to run a betting operation of their own.

The NFL is already bitter with NV because they make hundreds of millions of dollars off their product and they don't get a nickle. Niceeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is America, the land of the free, where's the freedom to bet if you want?

My point is that all of these leagues are popular because of gambling.

I watch C. Michigan versus Toledo on a Wednesday night because I have action on it. Otherwise---I won't watch it.

I am not the only one :)

Spot on.

Interesting the difference between you guys and the AFL here in Australia is exactly that.

The League knows people bet on it...be pro-active (sorry, I do hate that word!) and make one of the books (any of them really!) a major sponsor.
Get your cut.
Promote it, and hopefully increase their market share, hence increasing your cut some more.
Simple really.

At least 1 of the 16 teams here has a bookie as their major sponsor...got a feeling there's another, but can't think of it...
...Premier League Soccer in England has teams in the same boat.

The only other reason I can think of is that the NFL don't want an NBA style fixing scandal...which is far easier to deny when there's no 'official' betting allowed...

...I guess European soccer is notorious for it...

...but I can't ever remember any kind of match fixing controversy out here.

There has been some players in trouble for betting on games...but only ever other, unrelated games, or indeed, on themselves to win!

Either way, your legislation is mad! :142smilie

[Lotteries are fine...even now NFL team 'sponsored' lotteries...but sports betting isn't? Crazy.]
