Tito Ortiz returns to UFC stage

Ortiz has been out of action since May 2008

The Ultimate Fighting Championship hosted a conference call Friday morning to announce several items of note, including the signing of a major free-agent mixed martial artist.

It just wasn't the fighter most fans were hoping would join the organization.

As the MMA world anxiously awaits a deal to be worked out between the UFC and superstar heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, it instead was revealed that Tito Ortiz would return to the organization.

Ortiz, one of the sport's biggest stars as it rose to mainstream acceptance, left the UFC in May 2008 amid a bitter war of words with Dana White, the organization's president.

The former friends continued to trade verbal barbs in the media and on the Internet but settled their differences around the time of UFC 100 on July 11, which opened the door to Ortiz's return. White said the relationship definitely was strained, but Ortiz is good for business.

"Tito's one of those guys that a lot of people love and a lot of people hate, but one way or another, people give a (expletive) about him, so he's back," White said.

Ortiz has been out of action since losing the last fight on his previous UFC contract to Lyoto Machida in May 2008. The 34-year-old had major back surgery in the meantime and just now is getting back into fighting shape.

"I just started running laps and started doing bag work," the former light heavyweight champion said. "I'm looking toward around November or December, so before the year is over, I want to fight 100 percent."

White speculated that the first opponent for Ortiz could be Mark Coleman.

Ortiz says he thought of signing with a different organization but, in the end, knew the UFC was the right place for him to finish his career.

"Competition was the biggest factor," he said. "If I fought for Strikeforce, who would I fight against? Babalu? I'd crush his face. Frank Shamrock? It (would) be the first death in mixed martial arts history. Who else would there be?"

Perhaps the same questions should be posed to Emelianenko. The man considered the world's best heavyweight fighter, and perhaps best pound-for-pound by many observers, remains a free agent after the collapse of Affliction last week.

White says there is little he can do at this time. The deal between the UFC and Emelianenko appears to hinge on the fact that the Russian fighter's handlers insist on co-promoting any event in which he appears.

"When I tell you that we tried everything that we could possibly do to get Fedor into the UFC, we went above and beyond," White said. "We came to the table willing to give up just about anything except the co-promotion."

White can't see a scenario in which the UFC would relent to the idea of co-promotion.

Emelianenko's manager, Vadim Finkelchtein, issued a press release on Friday. He said the door remains open on a deal.

"It is our hope that the UFC will remain in active dialogue with us as we try to find ways for us to work together," the statement read in part. "All we are asking is that there is give-and-take in the negotiations and that they are not one-sided."

White did confirm the signing of several other fighters left without a deal after the fall of Affliction, but an agreement with Emelianenko does not appear close. White said, however, that the deal still was on the table.

He also announced that new signee Vitor Belfort will replace Dan Henderson as Rich Franklin's opponent in the main event of UFC 103 in Dallas on Sept. 19. Henderson instead will get a second chance at Anderson Silva's middleweight title.

The Bad Boy is Back! Ortiz Returns to the UFC

It was said that the bad blood between UFC President Dana White and former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz ran so deep that reconciliation wasn?t even a remote possibility. But after a twitter exchange between the two surfaced recently, fans began speculating that a return to the Octagon wouldn?t be too far off for ?The Huntington Beach Bad Boy.? On Friday, White made it official, announcing Ortiz? re-signing with the UFC during a media teleconference.

?Tito and I have history that pretty much everybody knows,? said White. ?We have put all our differences aside, have squashed everything, and we?re ready to move forward. Tito Ortiz is still a guy that fans want to see fight, he just had back surgery, he?s getting back into training, he feels good and he?s ready to compete in the 205-pound division and take a shot at the title again. And Tito Ortiz will retire in the UFC.?

?I think time really cures everything,? said Ortiz. ?Dana came to me and was a man of his word. He apologized to me for the things that he did prior, and for me, it (returning) was about competition. My fans deserve the best Tito Ortiz.?

One of the sport?s greatest light heavyweights, the 34-year old Ortiz (16-6-1) reigned over the 205-pound weight class from 2000 to 2003 and still holds the organization record for most successful title defenses with five. A California native who has been in the Octagon with the likes of Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort, Evan Tanner, Frank and Ken Shamrock, and Guy Mezger, Ortiz has also posted a 1-1-1 mark against the last three men to hold the UFC light heavyweight title, beating Forrest Griffin in 2006, battling to a draw with Rashad Evans in 2007, and dropping a decision to current champ Lyoto Machida in 2008, a bout which Ortiz almost pulled out in the waning seconds with a triangle choke.

?Forrest Griffin, I beat; Rashad Evans I thought I?d beat, but they called it a draw; Machida, I gave him the best fight anybody?s given him to this point and I almost submitted him. So me coming back at a hundred percent, everyone in the light heavyweights better watch out because I?m coming full force and I want to get that world title around my waist again.?

Ortiz is currently rehabbing after back surgery in October of 2008. It was an injury that Ortiz admits had him questioning his fighting future.

There was a question there for the first month,? said Ortiz, who admits to battling various back injuries since 2003. ?I was having some serious pain after surgery. I think the painkillers kinda made me forget about it a little bit, but when I would get out of bed, it was hard and there were some times I had to wake up with tears in my eyes just because of the pain. But one month turned into two months, two months into four months, then six months later I had no more soreness, no more pain, and then I started doing rehab. Now we?re back to where I was before I started having back problems. Now it?s just the mental focus of being positive and the way Dana?s treated me so far, it?s positive reinforcement and I?m excited to back in the UFC.?

Needless to say, with his back injuries in the past, the reconciliation with White, and a settled personal life thanks to the birth of twin boys with girlfriend Jenna Jameson, Ortiz is at peace and ready to make a run at the top again.

?I think the last time I was at peace like this was when I was the champion and didn?t have back problems,? he said. ?Dana being a man of his word and Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta being as forgiving and generous as they have been, I?m very, very thankful. I?m thankful for the people around me, my camp, my beautiful girlfriend Jenna, my two beautiful sons, and for my fans. The fans have stuck with me no matter what. Well, I?m back home, and I?m back where I need to be.?

Ortiz? long-awaited return is expected in November/December of 2009, with speculation centering on a possible bout against UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman.

UFC welcomes back Tito, still no Fedor

Dana White announces big news for the UFC, but frustrated by talks with Fedor

Dana White has been on a ?bury-the-hatchet? tour over the last couple weeks, including kiss-and-makeup sessions with former nemesis Tito Ortiz and formerly banned clothing company Affliction.

Unfortunately for UFC fans it seems a new enemy may have replaced the old ones as Fedor Emelianenko is no closer to signing with the premiere mixed martial arts promotion.

The president of the UFC announced major news over a conference call Friday, including the welcoming back of Ortiz, a new main event for UFC 103 in Dallas and a television deal that will bring free fights to the United Kingdom and Ireland over the ESPN network.

However he also had a few not-so-nice things to say about Russian fighter Fedor Emelianenko and his promotion company, M-1 Global, who White had met with in California last week to attempt to lure into the UFC.

?The fans really want to see this fight, I want to see how good this guy really is against the best of the world,? White said. ?But these guys want to come in and co-promote? How the hell are they going to co-promote?

"The UFC has built this entire industry. Basically they come in and say, ?Hey, we?ve got this guy that some people say might be the best heavyweight in the world and for that, we want half of your business.? Okay. That (expletive) probably works in Russia but not here.?

White says he has done ?everything in his power? to persuade Emelianenko to join the largest MMA organization in the world but that M-1 Global refuses to sign a deal that doesn't allow them to co-promote events.

While those talks seemed to reach a stalemate, apparently talks with Ortiz went better than anyone could have expected.

In a meeting at Ortiz's private home in Huntington Beach, Calif., White says that all the bad blood that forced Ortiz to pull out of the UFC last year was put to rest.

?Tito and I have a history that everybody knows,? said White, who used to manage Ortiz before the two had a public falling out. ?Tito is still a guy fans want to see fight, he?s still a guy fans care about. We literally squashed everything and are ready to move forward. Tito will retire in the UFC.?

Ortiz, who had back surgery to fix an injury he says has plagued him since fighting Ken Shamrock in July 2006, said that he was extremely happy to be back in the UFC and that it was his dedication to his fans that made the decision easy.

?I think time cures everything, Dana came to me and apologized for everything that had happened,? Ortiz said. ?It was about competition for me, my fans deserve the best Tito Ortiz.

?If you look at the last three light heavyweight champions: Forrest Griffin I beat, Rashad Evans I thought I beat but they ruled it a draw and I almost submitted Lyoto Machida. I want to get that world title around my waist again.?

Other big news included the scratch of a Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson fight as the main event for UFC 103 on Sept. 19 in Dallas. The two had fought to a split decision Henderson victory in January and according to White, fans weren?t interested in a rematch.

Franklin will still appear at UFC 103 to face Vitor Belfort. Henderson is now first in line to face middleweight champion Anderson Silva following his upcoming battle with Griffin at UFC 101.

?Fans were pissed, there was some backlash, people didn?t like it,? White said. ?So we went out and signed Vitor Belfort, so he?s fighting Franklin in Dallas in September. Henderson is next in line to fight for Anderson. If Anderson doesn?t get busted up next week it could happen real soon.?

Belfort has won four straight fights, including a 37-second knockout of Matt Lindland in the Affliction organization in January.

?Vitor?s been on a streak again, and he?s back mentally and physically,? said White. ?His contract came up and we were interested. I?ve been hinting around at bringing him back, we got it done and it worked out. I think him and Rich is a fun fight.?

As far as the network deal, ESPN is set to bring UFC events to UK and Irish fans starting with UFC 101 in early August.

There has been speculation that a U.S. deal could be on the way but White refused to comment on where that possible deal was at.

?I?m confident that were going to get a network deal done,? he said. ?We?ve always said that once we get the right offer we?ll be on network television. We haven?t got the right offer yet.?

Despite all the breaking news of the organization, it was the news it didn?t break that still seemed to receive the most attention.

While White said that the deal with Emelianenko wasn?t dead and that ?they could call me right now,? he became frustrated towards the end of the call that a fighter he perceives as dodging the biggest fights would be made into such a big deal.

?For the fans or any of the media to call him the best in the world, let alone the pound-for-pound, is (expletive) insanity,? White said. ?He won?t give the fights the fans want to see. We?ve done deals with the best fighters in the world the last 10 years, there is absolutely no reason why Fedor shouldn?t be fighting in the UFC.

?Right now, I?m over the deal. To be honest with you, I don?t even want to talk about him anymore. Do you really give a (expletive) that much about a guy that won?t step up and give you what you want to see??
