25-year-old right-hander Cesar Carrillo is scheduled to make his major league debut Thursday against the Brewers.

Carrillo, the Padres' first selection in the 2005 draft, has battled elbow problems for much of his professional career. It's nice to see him in the bigs, but he probably isn't deserving of the nod. He was 8-4 with a 4.24 ERA in 20 starts with Double-A San Antonio earlier this season and has gone 0-2 with a 6.19 ERA since being promoted to Triple-A Portland a few weeks ago.

Carrillo needed no second opinion

Many pitchers need MRIs plus second and third opinions from leading orthopedic surgeons to determine when elbow reconstruction is necessary.

Cesar Carrillo needed no such medical analysis in late April of 2007.

In the second inning of his fourth start, Carrillo felt ?a yank? in his elbow while delivering a pitch.

?The pain was horrible,? said Carrillo. ?And then I couldn't throw the ball. I knew immediately what had happened.?

As bad as the pain was, Carrillo's timing was even worse. Undergoing ?Tommy John? surgery on May 1, 2007, essentially wiped out two seasons.

Thursday in Milwaukee, some 27-? months after blowing out his elbow, Carrillo, the Padres first round pick in the 2005 draft, will become the 10th Padre pitcher ? and third starter following Walter Silva and Mat Latos ? to make his major league debut this season.

?Everybody has a different timetable when rehabbing from this injury,? the 25-year-old Carrillo said Wednesday shortly after joining the Padres.

?I feel I finally found my rhythm in the middle of this summer. I finally felt comfortable when I was in (Double-A) San Antonio. My velocity was good and my curve finally came back.

?After the surgery it was hard to throw strikes. And the curve was the last pitch to come back ... to snap it off and be confident. Getting the curve back was a big step.?

Latos on schedule

Rookie right-hander Mat Latos pitched his scheduled bullpen Wednesday without the wrap on his right wrist and wasn't wearing the wrap later in then clubhouse.

He is scheduled to start Friday night's series opener in St. Louis.
