"the bunker"
(AP) - Donovan McNabb says he has no problem with Michael Vick taking some of his snaps and warns opponents that the two quarterbacks could be on the field together at times.

Vick was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles last week to add a different dimension to the team's offense, not to push McNabb for a starting job. It's likely that Vick, a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback in six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, will be used in a variation of the Wildcat formation.

But even in that scenario, McNabb won't necessarily be watching from the sideline.

"I'll be a receiver. I might be a tight end," he said with a smile Monday. "You never know where I'll be."

It's uncertain whether the Eagles would risk putting McNabb at an unfamiliar position and expose him to the defense. Coach Andy Reid isn't revealing any secrets.

McNabb said he first lobbied the Eagles to sign Vick a month ago. He said he approached Reid with the suggestion even before Vick was released from federal custody after serving 18 months of a 23-month sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation. The two have been friends since McNabb escorted Vick on a campus visit to Syracuse a decade ago ? Vick chose Virginia Tech.

"I believe in second chances and I have strong faith in God that he forgives our sins," said McNabb, a dog lover who owns two American bulldogs and a Belgian Malinois. "Yes, it was a bad thing and a malicious act, but somewhere in your heart, you have to have forgiveness."

So far, McNabb has been impressed with what he's seen from Vick on the practice field and in the film room.
"He's done a great job. You have to be excited about his work ethic and attitude," McNabb said. "I see a guy doing whatever it takes to turn his life around. He's going through the proper channels."

McNabb isn't concerned that Vick's presence ultimately will create a quarterback controversy. When McNabb went down with a season-ending knee injury in 2006, Jeff Garcia stepped in and led the Eagles to a division title and a playoff victory.

But the Eagles didn't re-sign Garcia after that season, and McNabb regained his starting spot once he was healthy.

"I've been through many situations here throughout my career when they've cheered for the backup," McNabb said. "It happened with Garcia. It happened with (Kevin) Kolb. It happened with A.J. (Feeley). I'm used to that."

McNabb, a five-time Pro Bowl pick, has led the Eagles to five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl appearance in 10 seasons in Philadelphia. He was rewarded with a $5.3 million raise in the offseason when the Eagles tore up his old contract with two years remaining, and gave him a new deal worth $24.5 million over the next two seasons.

McNabb doesn't consider Vick a threat to his job.

"I kind of can be a mentor to him, give him an opportunity to get his feet under him, get his life together," McNabb said.

I will provide my ideas on how this will work out for the Eagles

McNabb eyeing Plaxico?

Donovan McNabb lobbied for the Eagles to sign Michael Vick. Could Plaxico Burress be next? It's highly unlikely, but McNabb joked yesterday about urging the team to sign Burress the same way he did with Vick.

A few other items.

Vick is on probation for a year. Can he stay off the weed long enough ?

He has got to stay out of trouble and keep a low profile. No throwing middle fingers at the home crowd.

He also has to continue his commitment to the Humane Society and continue that work. If he doesnt , he is going to be a huge distraction at some stadiums around the country.

........................................................

explain the 4th and 24

what happened ?

McNabb had a little hay in his day as well so maybe they become like McNabb and Iverson? Start clubbing a little more often, from NY to NJ theres plenty of good ones...
4th and 24....the forgotten play. or was it 26?

It made one man another years worh of salary.
Something like this from the play by play announcer: McNabb looks, sidesteps and throws one up for grabs.....HOLY SHIT HE CAUGHT IT!!! How in the hell did he come down with that ball...anyway the Eagles keep the drive somehow alive with that completion.
Who was the bum that caught the ball for the Eagles. I wonder if anyone OUTSIDE of Eagle fans and people that live in the Philadelphia are truely know. What an asshole he was:D

I think its worth the risk, for anyteam.
Figure he shoots HIMSELF and doesnt kill anyone, no liquor involved...he should get out on good behavior after a week. I mean he can pay himself for the damages caused. and Im sure he would drop the charges on himself if he could. I mean Leonard Little, Stalllworth, are horrible cases....Vick (to me) should of just been fined, and Matt Jones should have a few more piss test. Plaxico cant be going away long, or our system is really fucked up(which I know it is!!!!)

The question that I would ask is how Vick can possibly help Philly against teams that they can't already beat? Against teams where Donovan isn't befuddled by the defensive schemes, they don't really need this type of help. Against teams that baffle McNabb with the coverages, who in the world thinks Vick will be able to help?

My opinion is that Philly will now beat the teams they would have won against anyway by an even larger margin, and that they will still lose to the teams they would have lost to before. In other words, I don't see Vick changing any losses into wins, and if he doesn't do that, what's the point?

I thought Vick was horribly punished by a hysterical overreaction led by overly sentimental soccer-moms, and therefore am glad he's getting to play again. That said, he was an AWFUL QB at Atlanta against good defenses. I doubt prison helped.

Agreed. How is a 2 yr absence from the game going to help a QB who struggled with the Xs and Os of the game? The Eagles offense is based on QB efficiency and Michael Vick may be the worst QB in the league at efficiency and field vision.

The move makes absolutely no sense so its clear there was some other agenda behind the Vick signing.

It has absolutely ripped the eagle fan base in two. So far No Good.

So the Falcons took that 5th pick and a package of other picks to move up to the 1st overall pick, which was held by the San Diego Chargers. The Falcons drafted Michael Vick, the quarterback wunderkind with running skills like no other quarterback before him. Vick also had a cannon for an arm, though there were concerns about the accuracy of this arm. :SIB

This was not to be. Michael Vick broke his leg in a preseason game and the Falcons struggled all season. Things got worse late in the year as Vick questioned Reeves' attempts to get him to return earlier than he wanted from the injury. :scared :scared

This dispute and a losing record was enough to cause the firing of Dan Reeves, despite his leading the Falcons to their two best seasons ever. The firing of Reeves was one of the first major decisions of the new controversial owner, Arthur Blank.:sadwave: :sadwave:

For the second time in three seasons, the Falcons would be knocked out of the playoffs by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Things went downhill from here for Mora and Vick and the Falcons. The Falcons finished 8-8 in 2005 and 7-9 in 2006. Many fans around the NFL complained that Michael Vick was not improving as a quarterback, but instead continued to make the same mistakes he had as a young quarterback. :SIB

Despite sometimes gaudy rushing totals, Vick was becoming pegged as a one-dimensional player.

The Falcons under Mora attempted to help Vick by spending high draft picks on receivers like Roddy White and Michael Jenkins, and the team installed a West Coast Offense to take advantage of Vick's quick decision making and scrambling skills.

Unfortunately, the key skill a west coast quarterback needs is accuracy, to make the many short throws required in the offense. Therefore, Vick's deficiencies were exposed in the new offense. Running back Warrick Dunn and tight end Alge Crumpler were Vick's only reliable weapons, and these two players had injury issues of their own.:scared

Vick's lack of progress led some fans to call for promising backup passer, Matt Schaub, to be installed as the starting quarterback. This was never a serious option, given that Michael Vick was the franchise quarterback. After the 2006 season, Schaub would be traded to the Houston Texans for a 2nd round draft pick.

Just months after Michael Vick's replacement was traded away, Vick was implicated in a Virginia dog fighting ring.

...............................................................

I really do hope tha that Vick can emerge from this and be a better person.

Maybe he has learned his lessons. Maybe Vick will end up taking the Eagles to the Superbowl game in a few years, maybe he will again be voted to the Pro Bowl, maybe he will .........

Maybe Vick will just suck like he always has.

Has Vick already violated the terms of his reinstatement?

Posted by Mike Florio on August 22, 2009 4:02 PM ET
We get a lot of e-mails every day. Often, the message carries a subject line that reflects a gross exaggeration (at best) of the information contained therein.

So when perusing the e-mail box after taking a workout break (and then eating a lunch big enough to more than offset the benefits of the workout), I shrugged when I saw the following message heading: "Mike Vick may have already violated terms of NFL reinstatement."

Then I opened the message.

It contained a link to an August 16 item in the New York Post. Brian Costello of the Post writes in the first paragraph of the article that, on the evening after Vick's return to the practice field, he "sat in a corner booth . . . in the Riverbend Bar & Grill, sipping on a Grey Goose and pineapple juice and talking with two friends.":scared

Grey Goose, for those of you unfamiliar with Maurice Clarett, is vodka.

The problem? Vick's conditional reinstatement to the NFL contains an express prohibition against the use of drugs and alcohol.

In the July 27 letter communicating to Vick his conditional reinstatement, Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote that "you are required to abide by the terms of the supervised release that were imposed on you by the court, which include not committing any further crime, limits on who you may associate with, prohibitions regarding drug and alcohol use, possession of a firearm or other dangerous weapon, and forbidding you to own, possess or be involved with the sale of any dog."

We're certain that, if this becomes an issue, there will be explanations and clarifications and anything but an admission that Vick was drinking alcohol. Still, the mere fact that Costello wrote that Vick was drinking vodka in public demonstrates the extreme care Vick must exercise not only to stay within his razor-thin margin for error, but also to create a clear perception on the part of others that he hasn't done anything to violate the terms of his reinstatement or, more importantly, his probation.

Quote of the Week I

Michael Vick is expected to make his preseason debut Thursday night in Philadelphia against the Jaguars.
AP
Peter King's Mailbag
Peter King will answer your questions each week in Monday Morning Quarterback: Tuesday Edition.

"Michael, you can't do that.''
-- Mentor Tony Dungy to Michael Vick, after Vick was spotted by the New York Post drinking a Grey Goose and pineapple juice at a Philadelphia hotel bar.

Vick can have a drink; that does not violate any terms of his return to the NFL. But Dungy's point was that Vick needs to be a saint as he gets back on the road to a life in football. He can't give the media or the public any ammunition to suggest he isn't doing everything he can to live a clean life and devote himself totally to football. Unfair? Yes. But until Roger Goodell green-lights Vick back into football, Vick has to be sure he doesn't give anyone reason to doubt him.

...............................................................

Who else would have to have this explained to them before they were even given permission to play in the NFL again.

4. I think the Eagles are likely to use Michael Vick as a third quarterback this year in most games -- but not as the 46th, emergency-only backup. If they do the latter, they'd be creating a major personnel problem. Here's why.

The NFL allows teams to dress a 46th player, but only if that 46th player is the third quarterback dressing that day. Philly has a decision to make about Vick and how he will be accounted for on the roster. It wouldn't be smart to use a situational quarterback as the emergency quarterback because if the player is used in the first three quarters, then the first and second quarterbacks are ineligible to play from that point on. So when the Eagles play Vick, it's likely they'll do so as a legitimate third quarterback -- and thus will likely take one special-teams-type player out of the lineup on that particular day. It's risky, and it'll make the job of special-teams coordinator Ted Daisher a vital one as the Eagles go forward.

Having Vick run around and make magic is all well and good, but if Andy Reid picks Vick to dress over, say, a defensive back who is an excellent gunner on the punt team, that decision could result in a long punt return. Interestingly, we'd probably never know it because Reid would never say, "We had Michael active today at the expense of Player X.'' But internally, it could be a hot potato on the coaching staff, with some assistants feeling that Vick is preventing a good kick-team player from performing

i totally agree. I think he was a ok QB with exceptional running skills.

I feel like Vick is still a threat as a runner and with all that speed on the Eagles Off. :0corn
Macklin, Jackson, and McCoy are all burners. BTW
Westbook is still quick too. McNabb will silence his critics. Man Philly fans are brutal. I think he's a top 3 qb in the NFL.( I would be tickled pink to have him on my Redskins and he would be loved in D.C)

I doubt Vick throws any meaningfull balls but I think he will have a positive impact as a skill player.

I'd line him up in 3 or 4 WR's set aside Macklin or Jackson , and use him for wildcat.

IMO Philly will finish with a top notch Offense.
on paper they look like super Bowl material.

Philly will be a very exciting team this season.
