Florida Gators are the overwhelming No. 1 in the Associated Press poll. That was not unexpected, but the Gators' margin over No. 2 Texas is a shock;

But the Gators are in a class by themselves, the most overwhelming preseason No. 1 in the history of the media poll.

Florida received 58 of the 60 first-place votes, or 96.7 percent. Texas got the other first-place votes.

The previous highest percentage of first-place votes for the AP preseason poll, which started in 1950, was 95.4 percent for USC in 2007. Those Trojans got 62 of 65 first-place votes -- and didn't play for the national title.

In comparison, the Coaches' Poll gave UF 53 of 59 (89%), with Texas getting four first-place votes and Oklahoma and USC picking up the remainders.

There are a few other points to consider; only 10 preseason No. 1s have won a National Championship. When UF was No. 1 in 1994 and 2001, those were the seasons of the "Choke at Doak" and Spurrier retiring after losing to Tennessee in the last regular season game.

Being No. 1 is no prize.

The article also notes that only once since 1950 has a team won three of four National Championships; 1994-95, 1997 Nebraska, who shared their last title with Michigan. Florida is trying to do the unthinkable. Every time that stat is mentioned this season, it should be a slap in the face for the Gators and the fanbase. This is not merely about winning and having the best team. This is about defeating the law of averages and having every bounce and injury go for the Gators.

I wonder how many times the preseason number 2 ranked team has won the championship, or the number 3, number 4, etc. I really don't know, but I would bet that, in general, the lower the initial ranking, the fewer times that team has won the championship. Does the number 1 ranked team need to win the championship 51% of the time for it not to be a curse?

You also could look at this another way - the voters are cursed - they just don't have much luck in picking the best team in the country without watching any football. Of course, the problem is that these initial rankings have a good deal of influence in determining who the final champion is. That is the curse on the fans.

In the shadows
Have Herbstreit hump the teams leg all year,
you will fall in the standings for sure!

Speaking of Herby.... could it be him who drilled the small hole in EA's Hotel Room and shot the video? She gave him the boot after an affair. :shrug:

The only saving grace in being ranked number 1 is that, at least, you're better off than those ranked 2 or worse.

Surely to God this puts to rest this Curse of #1 nonsense, since it appears (as we all knew all along) to be the best possible position to be in.

I would add #2 to this statement as well. In my opinion, it is more of a blessing to be ranked #2 as opposed to #3 as it is #1 opposed to #2.

Either way, if you are in the top two pre-season and win out, you are decently protected from being jumped for the BCS title game. (not guaranteed)
