Michael Madden a football player at my school who was involved in a car accident 4 yrs ago passed away last night.he had been in a coma since the day that the car he was a passenger in, hit a tree. It was a rainy day going to football practice and the roads were slick.Mr. and Mrs Madden after two years of having him on the respirator finally took it off.But Michael never needed it and continued to live for another 2 years.
Michael was one of my firsts "guardian angels" stories.Madjack allowed me to ask everyone here to put $5.00 in an envelope and send it to the madden family for christmas gifts.Michael had 4 brother and sisters and his parents had little money. So many of you guys[gals] responded sending money. The maddens had no idea where all these guardian angels gifts were coming from. Her kids would come home from school and there would be 20-30 envelopes everyday with $5.00.Some of you people put $10's and $20's.I had no way of knowing if any had been sent.I finally talked to Samantha,Michaels aunt. She had suspected it was me.Later on Mrs madden realized I started it.I pasted the post below.
I visted Michaels nursing home many times. They had to move because there house needed space for Michael. He had been home the past two years. He passed away last night. How sad a sophmore football player on his way to practice one day never wakes up.and years later passes away.
Want again ,to thank you all that contributed a few years ago.Like I said a few years back...you all earned your wings.

Nov '07 post

Samantha,Michaels aunt came to see me monday in school.Renee,Micheals mother has been "floored" with all the responses.Sam,didn't know the amount of money but was going to find out yesterday and call me.I was waiting for the call before I updated everyone.
Mr and Mrs madden bought the four kids 4 IPODs with the money as gifts for Christmas. They said these gifts came from Micheal in a strange way. They put the ipods on Michaels bed in the nursing home and when they visited him on Christmas morning they had there kids open the wrapped presents. When Sam was telling me this I was crying.Pretty moving...With the rest of the money they put it in a savings account for Michael. They want to take him home from the nursing home. Before they do that they must get a bed. So they are saving for a certain type of bed.The money we raised in school for Michael went to the bed savings.
The Maddens aren't paying for his nursing home expenses. NY State has taken over due the the incomes of the Maddens. The nursing home is an Orange County run place. Not a private one.Plus its 30 miles from there home. But everyday his grandparents, aunts and uncles and parents are by his bed. They have a schedule. It's been two in a half years since he's been in the coma and only on 2 or 3 occasions a family member has not been at his side during the day or night.
Samantha bought pictures of Michael for the yearbook. We are putting Michaels 10th grade yearbook picture in with the seniors pictures since this is his senior year. For the comments under the picture Mrs Madden wrote.. " thanks for Mr. Box for everything that you have done....thank you all for the support and prayers...and thank the guardian angels..who ever you are...please pray for Michael
So in our school yearbook there is mention of you all...pretty nice. I'll update once I get the amount collected.I'll paste this and put it in general discussion..
Again thank you all that sent something. You made the holiday a little bit nicer for a beautiful family that hopes and prays everyday...l
You all are real guardian angels...and you earned your wings...

When you posted that they needed some help I sent them some cash in the mail.

I did not say who it was from or had a return address on the envelope.

Well, about a month after I sent them the money I got a letter in the mail.

The piece of wide column tablet paper said:

"Thank you very much. GO A's."

Blew me away.

Money well spent.

Oakas...wow..I never knew that.I'm sure some people that donated didn't leave a return address.I remember asking everyone not to say to much or leave your name.I didn't want them to know I was involved in it.But after a few weeks I had to ask Samantha if there was something going on.I told her I had something to do with it but not too much. But Renee,Michaels mother had suspected me from the beggining. We raised at the school over $4,000 for him selling cookies and cakes during lunch.
The irony of all of it was Renee wrote Michaels tribute in his yearbook picture. She thanked the guardian angels which was us here in madjacks. So the students and parents reading the yearbook
never really knew what the reference to the guardian angels was.
The Maddens had a private ceremony today. No obituary in the paper..Just an announcement...
But thanks for sharing oakas...

I remember this, thanks for sharing - then and now. You are quite a guy, I love your insights on football, and more importantly, on life and people.

You have done some amazing things, Box, speaking of earning wings. Wing on, friend.

I don't think those of us that sent any small amount amount of money can be considered angels for them--but you might BOX. Your ideas and heart put you in a special place
Sorry to hear of the bad news. The only good thing I can see is that it sounds like the family was able to not only bring they family closer-but the community as well
