?Freddy Sanchez is eligible to come off the DL Wednesday but he almost certainly will not play on this six-game trip to Philly and Milwaukee. He?s taking swings off a tee today to test his shoulder and he?ll go on a minor league rehab assignment that?ll last at least two games. He wouldn?t rule out Milwaukee, but GM Brian Sabean said they aren?t counting on him any earlier than Sept. 7, when the club opens a homestand against the Padres.

?Pablo Sandoval?s calf is tight again. He?s playable and says he?s good to go, but Bruce Bochy, on the advice of the training staff, is being ultra-cautious. Sandoval is too important to be lost for days if he aggravates it. He?s expected to play tomorrow, and as long as he doesn?t have a major setback, I?d expect this could be his last day off of the season.

?Bengie Molina did some running and he?s about to test his tight right quad by blocking balls in an indoor cage. He?s hoping to play Wednesday, but if not, he said he definitely expects to be in there Thursday. Both he and Sandoval are available off the bench.

?GM Brian Sabean on whether Kevin Frandsen will join the club after Fresno?s finale: ?We?ll see.? Sabean said the club is well covered in the middle infield with the versatility of Juan Uribe, Ryan Rohlinger and Eugenio Velez.

?The Giants didn?t add offense, though Jermaine Dye was available to them. Too much money.

?Brad Penny is here and he?s starting Wednesday. Bochy said he?s hoping to get five quality innings out of Penny, whose last major league game was Aug. 21. Any more than that would be gravy. Bochy told Penny that the bullpen has him well covered, so he shouldn?t save himself in the hopes of pitching seven or eight innings.

?Penny said he made up his mind long ago that he?d sign with the Giants. He never considered going back to Florida because he ?wants to play in front of some fans, to be honest with you.? He said he?d already decided to sign with the Giants before the three-game sweep over the Rockies this past weekend, so watching the games provided unique experience. He found himself rooting them on like a teammate, even though he wasn?t officially a Giant yet.

Told he?ll probably pitch twice against the Dodgers, Penny broke into a big smile. ?Yeah, I?ll look forward to that.?

Asked if he?ll relish pitching in front of 42,000 Dodger-hating fans, Penny interrupted. ?42,001,? he said.

He said the Dodgers didn?t believe his shoulder was really injured last season, calling it a ?miserable situation,? but credited the Red Sox for worked with him to develop a program that helped it recover and gain strength. He said he feels great now and is looking forward to helping the Giants down the stretch.
