University of Cincinnati senior linebacker Curtis Young (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) underwent successful right knee surgery Friday at University Hospital, head coach Brian Kelly announced.

Dr. Angelo Colosimo, the Bearcats? team orthopedic surgeon, performed the operation. Young will begin rehabilitation immediately and is expected to miss three to six weeks. He was injured in practice leading up to UC?s game at Oregon State.

Young started the Bearcats first two games of the season, tallying 13 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, two quarterback hurries, and a sack.

Kelly also announced that sophomore defensive back Malik James (Los Angeles, Calif./Freemont/El Camino CC) had left the team and will return to California.

Beavers concerned about UC's fast-paced offense

by BKoch on Cincinnati.com

Great quote in The Oregonian today from OSU coach Mike Riley talking about UC?s uptempo offense: ?We practice the two-minute drill a lot, but these guys, they live it.?

That reminded me of one day during the first week of practice when I watched the Bearcats do what I thought was their two-minute drill near the end of the session. I walked up to Brian Kelly to ask him something and prefaced my remarks by saying something like, ?You guys looked pretty impressive in that two-minute drill.?

?That wasn?t our two-minute drill,? Kelly said.

That was the first time I really understood just how fast this offense would be and what Kelly meant last spring when he told me that he now had the horses to unleash the full force of his offensive arsenal.

One reason the Bearcats have been so ineffective operating at such a furious pace is the lack of penalties. In previous years, they have been prone to penalties, partly due to their style of offense, but so far this year they?ve been called for only five penalties for 60 yards.

?We?ve been pretty efficient relative to not turning the ball over and having penalties, ? Kelly said. ?I felt last year that we hovered on that line of being a very good offense but we kept us from being one was the amount of penalties. I think we?ve cleaned that up. That?s helped helped us offensively a lot because it has allowed us to play faster. We have to stay away from things that slow us down on offense.?

Meanwhile, Oregon State running back Jacquizz Rodgers missed practice again on Wednesday, which means he has not participated in either of the two heavy preparation days for UC. He?s still expected to play Saturday and Riley continues to say the ankle injury is not serious.

There has also been a lot of talk this week in Corvallis about the OSU players seeking revenge for the 34-3 pasting they absorbed at Nippert Stadium two years ago.

?Cincinnati is definitely a team we?ve had on our minds since (that game),? linebacker Keaton Kristick told the Oregonian.

The Bearcats won that game thanks to seven OSU turnovers. This year?s OSU team is much better, with Rodgers and a more mature Sean Canfield at quarterback. But UC is a much better team, too.
