At the Gate - Saturday

As a native Marylander, the Maryland Million program was one of my favorite days of the year. Restricted to Maryland breds, an all stakes program with $1 million in purses usually led to exciting racing and excellent wagering opportunities.

This year, the 24th running takes place on Saturday. The program is now called the Jim McKay Maryland Million, named after the sportscaster and Maryland horseman that came up with the idea, which has now been copied by nearly every other racing state in the U.S.

Maryland racing has been hurt by neighboring states that now have slot machines, and racing in the state is just a shell of what it used to be.

Some long time trainers in the state are now based at either Philadelphia Park or Delaware Park, which has purses fueled by slot machines.

I no longer bother to handicap or wager on Maryland racing, despite the fact I cut my teeth as a handicapper playing the ponies in my home state, as well as landing in the winners circle as an owner for the first time at Laurel Park.

I did not get a chance to handicap the entire card for Saturday, but I might have to wager on a few races for old times sake.

I did break down today?s marquee event, the Maryland Million Classic, which is below.

Here is today's opening race from Belmont Park to get our day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $16,000N1Y (1:00 ET)

#2 I'llthinkofsumthin 3/1

#6 O'Sotopretty 6/1

#7 Gattinara 10/1

#10 Dressmaker 6/1

#2 I'llthinkofsumthin fits well here in this $16K claimer for non-winners of a race in two months. The filly beat $35K claimers three back in the mud in a race taken off the turf, which was her first start for the Brown barn off the claim. The filly tried turf in her last two starts, checking in fifth in both outings. The return to dirt suits and she has landed in the exacta in all four trips over the main track here. If she runs back to her last two main track efforts, she will be tough to beat in this softer spot.

#6 O'Sotopretty came up the inside with a good late rally to finish second against $20K non-winners of two or straight three year olds. She was claimed out of the race by the DiPrima barn that is 16% winners first off the claim. Her speed figs are coming up on the light side but she has landed in the exacta in 6 of her 9 career starts and beat straight three year olds fillies for a $20K tag three back at Churchill Downs. She should get a good pace set up here as there is plenty of early zip signed up to go here.

Wagering

WIN: #2 to win at 2/1 or better.

EX: 2,6 / 2,6,7,10

TRI: 2,6 / 2,6,7,10 / 2,4,6,7,10

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 9 Gallant Bloom Handicap G2 (5:15 ET)

#2 Indian Blessing 8/5

#3 Sara Louise 7/5

#6 Thunders Dove 6/1

#7 P.S.U. Grad 12/1

#2 Indian Blessing looks primed and ready for a good effort today, which is her fourth start of the year. The two-time Eclipse Award winner is seeking her first win of the year. She started in Dubai where she ran a solid seconds against the boys in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1), then was fourth in the Desert Stormer as the beaten chalk. Last out she set the early fractions in the Ballerina (G1) and was no match late for Music Note. The third place finisher in that race was Informed Decision, who came back to win the $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters in her next outing on Sept. 12. The filly this race, which she won last year, as a stepping-stone to the Breeders? Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, where she ran second last year. She has had a myriad of small issues, but her last two works suggest she is ready to fire.

#3 Sara Louise came off a nine-month layoff with a sharp win in the Victory Ride (G3) at the Spa in the slop. The runner up in the race was Bold Union, who came back to win the Endine (G3) in her next start on Sept. 12. The bin Suroor barn has been on fire, hitting at a 36% clip over the last 90 days and that includes six graded stakes wins. The filly has the distinction of being the last runner to finish ahead of Rachel Alexandra when she beat the super filly winning the Pocahontas (G3) last November. Does she regress off the big score last out or does she move forward? A real tough call at a short price.

Wagering

WIN: #2 to win at 8/5 or better.

EX: 2,3 / 2,3,6,7

TRI: 2,3 / 2,3,6,7 / 2,3,5,6,7

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Laurel Park:

LRL Race 11 Maryland Million Classic (6:12 ET)

#6 Regal Solo 6/1

#10 Sweet Goodbye 8/1

#8 Rhythm Master 3/1

#1 Broadway Producer 9/5

#6 Regal Solo has done his best work around one turn but is coming off a sharp win last out against optional claimers going seven furlongs and was claimed out of the race. He now goes for the Dilodovico barn that has won with eight of his last 15 first off the claim. The gelding has won 4 of 10 over the main track here and was a solid second here in the Private Terms Stakes last year. The barn is 27% winners moving runners from sprint to route and the gelding has enough pedigree to handle the stretch out.

#10 Sweet Goodbye is taking on the boys here and she fits. She went gate to wire to win the two turn Pink Ribbon at seven furlongs at Charles Town in her last outing, which was off a eight-month layoff. She won the Maryland Million Oaks here last year during a three-year-old campaign where she won five of seven starts. The Grove barn is 30% winners (with a +ROI) with horses making their second start off a +180 day layoff.

#8 Rhythm Master was a good second last out in the restricted Governors Day in the slop at Delaware Park. The gelding set the early fractions and could not hold off the winner in the stretch. He was making his first start after getting claimed for $35,000 two back, taken from the Tony Dutrow barn. The new barn has hit at a 19% clip this year with limited stock. McClelland is a sharp trainer who learned plenty while assistant trainer to Howard Wolfendale, one of Maryland?s top claiming barns. There is a slight chance of some rain and I will like this guy more if the track comes up wet.

Wagering

WIN: #6 to win at 4/1 or better.

EX: 6,10 / 1.6.8.10

TRI: 6,10 / 1,6,8,10 / 1,2,6,8,10

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park

R1: #7 Gattinara 10/1

R2: #4 Flying Valentine 12/1

R4: #8 Stylish Mon 8/1

R4: #6 Recruit 8/1

R5: #4 Gaelic Will 8/1

R6: #4 Holy Anthem 8/1

R7: #11 Five Boroughs 20/1

R9: #7 P.S.U. Grad 12/1

Good luck today!

BEST BET: Mineralogist (8th race)

First Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Simplify 2. Moontune Missy 3. Cuvee Uncorked

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SIMPLIFY isn't the fastest filly in Sunday's opener, but with Beyers in the 85-88 range in all six dirt starts this year, she's the most consistent; pace presser handles any footing. MOONTUNE MISSY outdueled 5-4 favorite UNDERGROUND through a fast pace and drew off at 17-1 in her 3-year-old bow; appears to have found a home on conventional dirt. CUVEE UNCORKED has done everything asked so far, winning her first two starts at Delaware Park; extra credit for wet track.

Second Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Star of New York 2. Bullstar 3. Fiddlers Patriot

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STAR OF NEW YORK has put together in-the-money finishes in his first seven starts, capped by a pair of runner-up efforts with blinkers added; should appreciate shortening up to 6fs after getting outfinished late at a mile. BULLSTAR also cuts back from a mile, after leading through the early going in both Saratoga starts over good turf; also handles dirt. FIDDLERS PATRIOT is a half to four multiple winners, notably Speed Bag, a useful sprinter who banked $251K on this circuit.

Third Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Mesa Sunrise 2. Cabaret Cowboy 3. Pashito the Che

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MESA SUNRISE turned in an exceptional performance to wire 13 allowance rivals through fractions of 44.17 and 1:08.40 on Sept. 5; the splits for the Grade 1 Forego, a race later, were considerably slower. CABARET COWBOY has been freshened up since chasing and giving way in the track-record Amsterdam; versatile colt has never been out of the exacta from four starts at Belmont, handles any footing or pace setup. PASHITO THE CHE beat ASK JOE and stablemate JU JITSU JAX in a $75K stake at Penn National two back; picks up weight after stumbling at the break at odds-on.

Fourth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Song for Pupcake 2. Big Brownie 3. Royal Valentine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SONG FOR PUPCAKE sat a good inside trip and managed an even finish to be third when stretched out to a mile last time; good try here at 6fs in debut vs. allowance repeater Elegant Bess. BIG BROWNIE finished willingly in an off-the-turfer here June 14, beating a couple of next-out winners; breezed sharply Tuesday. ROYAL VALENTINE takes the blinkers off after being cooked in a duel on dirt; figures close off several turf sprints this year.

Fifth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Whoopty Whoopty 2. Remit 3. A Plus

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHOOPTY WHOOPTY steadied into the turn, just missed despite rider losing whip when bet to favoritism for bow; bred for wet. REMIT is a half to Retap, winner of the Riley Allison Futurity; dangerous homebred has breezed regularly at 5fs. A PLUS is out of multiple stakes winner Golden Marlin; bullet gate work at 5fs followed by 6f breeze Monday.

Sixth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Patience Drive 2. Ride On Josephine 3. Magic Roberta

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If rain forces a switch to dirt, PATIENCE DRIVE pressed the pace from the start and remained clear for second over DISTINCTIVELY when back on dirt at Saratoga; both are bred to handle off-going. RIDE ON JOSEPHINE has been in the money all seven maiden starts, notably a good-figure effort this course and distance closing day at the spring-summer meet; threat turf or dirt. MAGIC ROBERTA was beaten less than a length in each of three turf sprints in Southern California; working well for return.

Seventh Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Kickapoo 2. Global Effect 3. Trusting Heart

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KICKAPOO takes a nominal step-up to N3L ranks after demolishing N2L sprinters for this price when claimed at the Spa; best takes it. GLOBAL EFFECT has had seven-week break since claimed and drops in price, standard operating procedure for this outfit; tough to catch if it rains judging from lengthy maiden score in slop here. TRUSTING HEART takes a subtle drop after running in open $20K claimer vs. Working Class Hero, who was winning his third straight race; won last pair here including July 4 sprint off similar layoff.

Eighth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Mineralogist 2. Hook Me Up 3. Valuable Lady

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MINERALOGIST is improving with every start, capped by come-again effort to run odds-on So N So to a close decision in an overnight stake; gets off the rail. HOOK ME UP wired an off-the-turf dash at Saratoga with a good figure first out, then was a clear second in the Lady Finger despite a 14-point downturn; will apply pressure from the outside against VALUABLE LADY. The latter was also a good-figure debut winner in an off-the-turf sprint, and her experience with a wet track could come in handy. Ditto SUGAR TRADE.

Ninth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. One Note Samba 2. Come From Behind 3. City Trooper

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ONE NOTE SAMBA dueled through enervating fractions and was still around to midstretch before giving way in the Champagne tough trip in debut when fourth behind COME FROM BEHIND. The latter also looks to rebound after finishing off the board in a graded stakes; earned top figure in maiden win opening day at the Spa vs. several of these. CITY TROOPER and MAGIC TIGER were beaten by Come From Behind, but each came back to graduate on muddy tracks later at the meet.

Tenth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Al's Deputy 2. Onzain 3. Big Grey

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If Sunday's nightcap is switched to dirt, AL'S DEPUTY was a lengthy winner over a next-out graduate second time out, and went well in his first allowance try decisioning TEMORE for the runner-up spot at odds-on. On turf, ONZAIN has recorded figures in the 75-79 range all four grass starts, including a maiden win here at this distance; tough four-wide trip last out. BIG GREY has trained well for first start since maiden win six months ago on Aqueduct's inner-dirt track; top-rated for grass on the Tomlinson numbers.

Battaglia's Picks

Battaglia's Picks

Battaglia's Picks

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27
Race 1
JAKE THE CAT woke up when dropped to this level last out. He gets blinkers today and looks best with Court back aboard. HIMMYHIMMY exits the same race as the top pick and should improve in his second career start. RAINMAKER RIB has been third in both of his races and is a contender.

Race 2
FLYING CHANCE was second best behind a repeat winner last time out and looks best against these bottom claimers. AMERICAN THUNDER figures to improve in his third race back after a two year layoff. He is the one to beat. ALISHOWEST has a chance.

Race 3
SGT. HULKA ran a game second at this same level last time out. He gets blinkers for the first time today and is the choice for the win. NAICHE finished behind the top pick last time out and looks like a contender. STREET SHOES LARRY didn't show much on the Polytrack at Arlington last time out but drops in class and has to be considered.

Race 4
GOLD CROP looked sharp wiring the field last time out. All four of her lifetime wins have come over the Polytrack at Turfway and a repeat of her last would make her tough here. GENERAL STEFFIE has four wins over the track and looks like the one to beat on the drop in class. MISSTEE BLUE has a chance.

Race 5
VERSE OF POETRY comes in off two impressive wins, including a sharp score in her first start over the Polytrack. She has the tactical speed to be well placed throughout and rates a slight edge in a wide open field. SHIMMERY didn't fire last time out but should like the move back around one turn today. ONE THAT GOT AWAY drops in class after a nice win at Hoosier and could be dangerous if she takes to the Polytrack.

Race 6
SINUS RHYTHM hasn't shown much in his last two starts but was running against tougher and looks best here on the move back down to this bottom level. MANTEO comes in off a nice win over the track and a repeat of that effort would make him tough again today. PAINTED FOREST was in good form before his last. He?s won over the track before and looks like a contender here.

Race 7
CATONTHEGO was no match for an impressive winner last time out but ran well to finish second in that one. Give her the slight edge in a field loaded with first time starters. LONDON TOWN shows a nice work since his first start and looks dangerous on the drop in class. DRINKININTHEROOM shows some decent works at Churchill and Lynn Whiting is good with debuting runners.

Race 8
RANSOM ROBERTO comes in off two solid races on the grass at Ellis. He shouldn't mind the switch to the Polytrack and gets in light with Rossi today. Give him a slight edge against a well matched field. KING KROMPRESSOR ran a game second at this level last time out and a repeat of that effort makes him the one to beat. SUDDENLY PERFECT comes in off a nice win over the Polytrack at Arlington and definitely looks capable of winning here.

Race 9
EL POCO DIABLO was a game winner in his first start back after a layoff. He has the class and speed to make it two in a row in a wide open field. ZEKE was second best behind an impressive winner last time out. He picks up Gon?alves today and is the one to beat. JOE SIX PACK is very consistent and can't be left out of the gimmicks.

Race 10
COACH BILLY G. broke poorly in his debut but ran well to finish fifth in a very tough race at Churchill. He's been training very well since then and gets Lasix for his return. Give him the slight edge over Futuristic with Borel in the irons today. FUTURISTIC has been second in 5 of his 7 races and Maker and Gon?alves are always hard to beat. ESCHEW OBFUSCATION woke up last out.

AL'S DEPUTY romped to maiden score two back at Saratoga, then took lead in stretch, couldn't last as 4-5 favorite vs. allowance foes. Entered for main track only. COMPLIANCE OFFICER won as much the best in turf dash two back, then ran well last out in race that came off turf. PAPA JERRY ran well in last two starts at this level over muddy tracks.

In a thriller of a finish, 7-5 Indian Blessing, the 4-year-old reigning champion carrying highweight of 123 pounds, held off the 3-year-old filly Sara Louise, favored at 6-5 under 117 pounds, in a stretch-long duel to win yesterday's Grade 2, $150,000 Gallant Bloom at Belmont Park.

Ridden by her regular pilot John Velazquez, Indian Blessing tucked inside behind the swift early pace (45.15 seconds for the half) set by Any Limit pressed by Thunders Dove, then split horses with a bold move to take the lead turning for home. She was quickly hooked by Sara Louise, Edgar Prado up, who was tracking the pace to the outside. In a head-to-head battle down the lane, neither filly giving an inch, Sara Louise poked her nose in front a stride before the wire, but Indian Blessing came back to win by a head bob.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Indian Blessing ran the 6? furlongs in 1:15.29 to pay $4.80. The exacta returned $8.60.

SECOND RACE: Can't keep a good woman down. Linda Rice, 0-for-17 at Belmont off her historic training title at Saratoga, got off the schneid here with Power Blast in, what else, a turf sprint for New York-bred 2-year-old maidens. Jet to Classics, 20-1, blinkers on after showing nothing in two dirt sprints at Spa, gunned to the front under Eibar Coa, set pace chased by Flying Valentine. Around the turn, Power Blast, eighth at 13-1 in his debut going mile-and-sixteenth on turf getaway day at Old Spa, came with sudden rally up rail under Alan Garcia to engage Jet to Classics for lead. Those two dueled to mid-stretch, when Power Blast took command and drew clear.

THIRD RACE: In $65,000 Jazzing Around overnight stakes for New York-breds at mile-and-sixteenth, 7-1 R Clear Victory, Edgar Prado up, and Future Prospect, 1-2 favorite under Rajiv Maragh off his game victory at 6-5 in Funny Cide at Saratoga, dueled early down the backside, then Maragh took back, allowing R Clear Victory to open daylight lead heading into turn. Turning for home, R Clear Victory still was going easily in front, while Future Prospect was spinning his wheels and looked cooked. But down the stretch, Future Prospect kicked into gear, collared R Clear Victory inside the final furlong and galloped away to handy score.

FIFTH RACE: Hot debate in press box over this disqualification in 2-year-old maiden race at 6 ? furlongs. Buddy's Saint, 8-1 firster for Bruce Levine, circled field turning for home under Jose Lezcano to take lead top of stretch, just as 6-5 favorite Global Force, a $1.2 million yearling debuting for Tom Albertrani and Padua Stables, split horses with his bid. Buddy's Saint drifted in several paths, herding Global Force, under Alan Garcia, in tight along rail. Those two battled length of stretch, with Buddy's Saint keeping straight path but leaning several times on Global Force, who was drifting out under left-hand stick. Global Force kept coming at him, but Buddy's Saint just held on in long drive. Inquiry sign was lit. Call could have gone either way, but stewards ruled that Buddy's Saint interfered and reversed order of finish.
