Preview: Rockies (92-70) at Phillies (93-69)

Game: 1
Venue: Citizens Bank Park
Date: October 07, 2009 2:37 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - All those big boppers and two hitter-friendly ballparks sure make the Phillies-Rockies series look like a slugfest.

Not so fast.

When Colorado swept Philadelphia in the 2007 NL division series, the teams combined for only 24 runs in three games. Now, each club boasts even stronger pitching.

The Phillies have two former Cy Young Award winners and last year's World Series and NLCS MVP on their staff. The Rockies were the only team in the majors to have all five starters reach double-digit wins.

``I look at our starting pitching as very good,' Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. ``I think it's as good as any team in the National League, and I think that our starting pitching will play up big in this series.'

The defending World Series champions are sending reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee (14-13, 3.22 ERA with Indians and Phillies) to the mound for Game 1 on Wednesday. Ubaldo Jimenez (15-12, 3.47) gets the start for Colorado.

Both pitchers are quite aware the ball travels well at Citizens Bank Park, and they're facing plenty of hitters who can drive them out. Neither Lee nor Jimenez will be intimidated.

``I think it's pretty well noted that it's a hitter's ballpark,' Lee said. ``It still doesn't mean you can't throw right-handers in and you can't come in on lefties because you're scared they're going to hit a home run. Obviously, you get in certain situations where you might not want to come in on a guy. But for the most part, I'm going to pitch the way I pitch, regardless.'

Pitching at Coors Field prepares Jimenez for just about anything, so he shouldn't have trouble blocking it out of his mind.

``The first thing is I'm not going to be thinking about the park because it's a hitter's park, anybody can hit them out,' Jimenez said. ``The only thing I can do is try to look at my fastball and try to throw everything down so they can hit groundballs.'

Lee has faced the Rockies only once in his career, beating them 3-1 on Aug. 6. He allowed one run and six hits, striking out nine in seven innings.

Jimenez held the Phillies to one run in 6 1-3 innings in the clincher of the '07 series, but is 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in two regular-season starts against them.

``Anybody in that lineup can hurt you,' Jimenez said. ``It's a tough lineup, a really tough lineup. It's a big challenge. But there's nothing you can do. The only thing, I'm going to go out there and just pitch my game, try to win.'

Cole Hamels, who was dominant during Philadelphia's postseason run last October, faces Aaron Cook in Game 2. Jason Hammel got the nod over All-Star Jason Marquis to pitch Game 3 for Colorado while the Phillies haven't decided. They can use three-time Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez, Joe Blanton or J.A. Happ.

The Rockies have the bullpen edge because closer Huston Street was 35 for 37 in save chances. Brad Lidge had 11 blown saves for the Phillies after going 48 for 48 last year. Manuel hasn't committed to using Lidge or Ryan Madson or even Blanton or Happ in the closer's role.

``I'll answer that when we get there,' he said. ``Whoever you see walking out there.'

While they certainly have quality pitchers who are capable of shutting good lineups down, both teams are mostly known for their hitting. And they can hit anywhere in any size parks.

The Phillies led the NL with 820 runs and 224 homers. The Rockies were second in both categories with 804 runs and 190 homers. By the way, both teams had middle-of-the-pack staff ERAs. Philadelphia was sixth at 4.16 and Colorado was eighth at 4.22.

All-Stars Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez and Shane Victorino lead the Phillies' lineup, which also includes 2007 NL MVP Jimmy Rollins.

Troy Tulowitzki, Todd Helton, Brad Hawpe and Clint Barmes anchor a balanced Colorado attack.

``Every team that's in the playoffs right now, every lineup is full of unbelievable hitters,' Lee said. ``There's not much room for error with these types of lineups and you've got to work ahead and you've got to stay out of the heart of the plate.'

The Phillies and wild card-winning Rockies took different paths to get here. Philadelphia (93-69) cruised to its third straight NL East title, leading the division since May 30.

Colorado rebounded from an awful start and finished a franchise-best 92-70, including 74-42 after Jim Tracy replaced Clint Hurdle as manager on May 29.

In '07, the Rockies came in riding the momentum from a 14-1 run. The Phillies were just thrilled to make it after overcoming a seven-game deficit with 17 remaining and surpassing the New York Mets on the final day of the regular season.

``They basically walked right through us,' Victorino said. ``They were playing so well. There was not a team in the National League that could stop them.'

Philadelphia is trying to be the first NL to repeat since the Cincinnati Reds won consecutive World Series in 1975-96.

``The taste is still in our mouths and we want to taste it again,' Madson said.

In the other NLDS, it is more old-school traditional baseball. The defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies have ability to score runs by the bushel-full and have strong starting pitching. The Phillies topped the National League in runs scored at 5.1 per game, which was just ahead of second place Colorado at 5.0. Need a game changing home run, look no further than these two clubs with Philly going yard 224 times (1st in NL) and Rocks batters sending the ball over the fence 190 times (2nd).

No team can live on hitting alone and Colorado had five different starting pitchers win 10 games or more, led by Jorge DeLa Rosa 16 wins. The Phillies have Cole Hamels who pitched much better the last two months than the first four and knows what it takes in the postseason. The addition of Cliff Lee gave the Phillies a wonderful a chance to win every fifth day and placed Joe Blanton in better position as a solid starter.

Both lineups have the ability to explode at any time, which sets up the potential for a great deal of second guessing by the managers in this series when it comes to making pitching changes. When has a starter had enough or can he work out of jams?

This leads to the late inning bullpen situations for both teams. Closer Brad Lidge was given every opportunity to succeed by manager Charley Manuel and he failed. Ryan Madison is now the closer, but his mental makeup is unproven in this pressure packed role. Huston Street has only allowed runs once in his last 10 appearances, yet nobody is convinced he?s Mariano Rivera material.

Key Numbers- Philadelphia won four of six meetings this year and tied for the best record in baseball on the road at 48-33. Colorado?s mission is to earn split and return home where they had the second best record in the senior circuit on home turf with 51-30 record. The Rockies are only 6-18 vs. NL teams scoring 4.8 or more runs a game on the season, while the Phillies are 17-7 when facing the same kind of offense.

National League Division Series Preview

National League Division Series

Wednesday, October 7th (All times eastern)
Colorado Rockies (92-70) at Philadelphia Phillies (93-69), 2:37 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Ubaldo Jimenez (15-12, 3.47) Philadelphia - Cliff Lee (7-4, 3.39)

- The Philadelphia Phillies start their quest toward a second consecutive World Series championship this afternoon, when they open the best- of-five National League Division Series against the Colorado Rockies in a matchup between the league's last two pennant winners.

The New York Yankees were the last team to repeat as champion, winning three straight titles from 1998-2000, while the NL hasn't seen a back-to-back champion since the Cincinnati Reds did it from 1975-76. . Philadelphia, which was swept by the Rockies in the 2007 NLDS, showed few signs of a World Series hangover this season, as the Phillies captured their third consecutive National League East title, leading the division everyday from May 30 on.

"This one was a little harder than people think," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We're a good team, but we had pitching problems all year. We had some holes. We were short in the bullpen all year."

Speaking of the bullpen, the Phillies enter the postseason with perhaps the biggest question mark of any team in the playoffs with regards to its closer situation. Brad Lidge was the driving force behind last year's championship, but has been abysmal in the closer's role this season.

Philadelphia made the biggest splash at the trade deadline when it acquired reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee from the Cleveland Indians for a package of prospects.

Lee, who gets the nod today ahead of World Series MVP Cole Hamele, was sensational upon his arrival in Philly, surrendering just three earned runs through his initial five starts, but has struggled a tad since, losing four of his last seven decisions.

In 12 starts with the Phillies Lee, last year's AL Cy Young Award winner, went 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA.

Colorado, meanwhile, stumbled out of the gates this year and fired Clint Hurdle after a 18-29 start, replacing him with Jim Tracy. Not exactly the recipe for success, but something clicked with this team after Hurdle was relieved on May 29.

The Rockies went an NL-best 45-29 record in the second half and since June 4, their 72-38 mark was second to only the New York Yankees (72-37).

"The only way these guys should feel about themselves is terrific," Tracy said. "To come from 15 1/2 games back [on June 3] to playing in the postseason when no one thought they'd be playing in the postseason, they should feel terrific. They are very deserving. They are one of eight clubs left with a chance to win the World Series."

The Rockies even made a late charge towards the NL West crown, before succumbing this weekend to the eventual division-champion Los Angeles Dodgers and had to settle for the wild card.

There is not one dominant pitcher for the Rockies, but they became the first NL team since the Florida Marlins in 2006 to boast five starters with 10 or more wins, and with a 4.22 ERA -- 4.13 by the starters -- the team set new club records in that department.

If you want to hang the label of ace on someone it would have to go to 25- year-old right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, who went 15-12 for the Rockies this season and will get the call in Game 1.

Colorado's staff took a big hit on Tuesday when it was learned that lefty Jorge De La Rosa would miss the first round because of a strained groin.

Philadelphia won four of six from the Rockies this season.

Book: Bettors backing defending champs big in NLDS

Colorado Rockies (92-70) at Philadelphia Phillies (93-69)

Line/Total: Opened Phillies -125 and 8 flat. Currently -140 and 8 over -120

What are the sharps backing: Phily -125 and -130.

What the book is rooting For: Rockies & Under. A Couple huge decisions here, as 82 percent of the action on side is on Philly and 74 percent of total action is backing the Over.

Injury report: None.

Comments: First time in 2009 that Rockies Ubaldo Jimenez (15-12, 3.47 ERA) has pitched against the defending champs. The Philadelphia players who have faced Jimenez have fared well, with a batting average of .412 (14-for-34).

The Phillies won regular season series 4-2. Cliff Lee has also not faced his opponent this season, as he was in the American League with Cleveland most of the year. However, Lee has seen action against pretty much every starter on the Rockies players that will be playing today. Against Lee, these hitters have a batting average of .257 (9-for-35).

Prop of the game: Cliff Lee (Phillies) Will He Allow a Home Run: No -125.
