GAME NOTES: The 21st-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers and the 24th-ranked Missouri Tigers open their respective Big 12 Conference slates against each other on Thursday night in Columbia.

The Big 12 North may not have as many heavyweights as the South, but there are some quality teams and Nebraska and Missouri are two that figure to compete for the division crown. Both teams are coming off a bye and the two clubs have accounted for the last three North Division titles.

The Huskers won three of their four non-league contests, with the lone loss coming in the final moments at Virginia Tech (16-15), which is now ranked in the Top 10. Nebraska's three wins all came against Sun Belt Conference opponents, including a 55-0 blanking of UL-Lafayette in its most recent outing on September 26th.

"I liked the way they came out," said head coach Bo Pelini. "We didn't play perfect by any means, but we did some good things in all phases. Now the season starts. Right now," he added about the beginning of the Big 12 season.

The shutout was the program's first since 2006 and it helped Nebraska finish its non-conference slate with a winning record for the 28th straight season.

For the Tigers, they defeated Nevada, 31-21, on September 25th, as they swept through their non-league slate for the fourth straight season. Missouri is now 4-0 on the campaign and primed for a run at a third straight Big 12 North Division title.

This game represents the 103rd all-time meeting between Nebraska and Missouri on the gridiron, with the Huskers holding a 63-36-3 advantage in the series. The Tigers though, thumped the Huskers, 52-17, in Lincoln last season and haven't lost a home game to Nebraska since 2001.

Courtesy of three blowout wins over SBC opponents, the Huskers enter this game averaging 39.2 ppg and 440.0 total ypg. The offensive success hasn't come at the expense of many turnovers either, as Nebraska has committed just three thus far. Quarterback Zac Lee has enjoyed a nice start to the campaign and he has completed 64.8 percent of his pass attempts for 927 yards and seven touchdowns. After faltering against VaTech, Lee bounced back by completing 15- of-18 tosses for 238 yards and a touchdown in the rout of ULL.

"Yeah, that was important for me personally," said Lee about being sharp. "After Virginia Tech, I made an effort to be sharp and get back on track and make sure I refocus myself."

Lee hasn't favored one player in the passing game, with tight end Mike McNeal leading the club with 11 catches and two touchdowns, and Curenski Gilleylen paces the team with 255 receiving yards.

In the backfield, Roy Helu Jr. has enjoyed a quick beginning to the campaign and he has rushed for 464 yards five scores, helping Nebraska's ground attack average a solid 183.8 ypg. He toted 15 times for 83 yards and a pair of scores against ULL, in a game that was well over by the half.

The Huskers have really impressed on the defensive side of the ball and after four games are giving up just 7.0 ppg and 285.5 total ypg. The unit has forced seven turnovers and recorded 10 sacks in slowing down opponents on a consistent basis, though coach Pelini still has higher expectations.

"I thought we've made progress, but we're nowhere near where we need to be in a lot of respects," said Pelini after the shutout against ULL. "We're getting better. Like I said, we're in the right galaxy now, where last year we were a few solar systems away."

In the team's triumph of ULL, Nebraska allowed just 222 yards of total offense, while recording three takeaways and two sacks. Safety Larry Asante even returned an interception for a touchdown, and he currently ranks second on the team with 23 tackles for the year. All-America candidate Ndamukong Suh has also been a force along the defensive line and he leads the team with 26 tackles, six TFLs and two sacks.

Missouri has also found success on offense early on, averaging 453.0 ypg, and quarterback Blaine Gabbert has been a big part of that. The first-year starting quarterback is off to a terrific start and he has thrown for 1,161 yards with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. Those are pretty impressive numbers for the sophomore, who passed for 414 yards and three touchdowns in the team's last win over Nevada.

"I'm impressed with his poise," said coach Pinkel. "He's kind of trying to find where he fits himself in a game, mentally, where he keeps focused."

Wideouts Danario Alexander and Jared Perry have flourished with Gabbert under center and they have combined for 54 catches, 785 receiving yards and nine scores on the season. The duo were terrific against Nevada as well, with Alexander catching nine balls for 170 yards and a pair of scores and Perry hauling in eight passes for 72 yards and a touchdown.

However, the concern for the offense comes on the ground, where Missouri is averaging just 3.8 ypc. Derrick Washington paces the attack with a respectable 301 yards, including 75 against Nevada, but the ground game has accounted for just four touchdowns thus far. The inconsistency of the ground game has hurt the Tigers in the red-zone, where they have converted just seven of their 15 chances into touchdowns.

Missouri has faced some respectable offenses thus far and the defense has responded well, limiting foes to 15.5 ppg and 351.8 total ypg. The unit has done a decent job in getting to the quarterback with nine sacks on the year, but could use a few more takeaways, recording only six in four games.

In their last game, the Tigers forced a pair of turnovers and came up with three sacks, helping them hold Nevada to three touchdowns despite giving up 364 total yards. Missouri though, showed some weakness against the run by yielding 218 yards on the ground, well above its season average of 133.8 rushing ypg allowed. Stopping the run will certainly be critical against the Huskers' balanced attack.

Sean Weatherspoon heads the UM defense with 38 tackles on the season and redshirt freshman Aldon Smith has emerged into a consistent pass rusher with a team-high three sacks.

Both of these teams still have a lot to prove, especially Missouri which is depending on some new faces to produce at key positions. The Huskers have the edge experience wise, and they should be able to be able to go on the road and pull out a big win.

Predicted Outcome: Nebraska 34, Missouri 28

Needless to say, this is a game that Nebraska coaches, players and fans have had circled for quite some time. Getting beat two years in a row by a combined score of 93-23 will do that to a program. But 2009 is a new year and so when 24th ranked Nebraska travels to Columbia, MO this Thursday night to face 21st ranked Missouri, revenge will be foremost on the mind of the visitors.

No question that this game should have a decidedly different feel than in the past two years. Missouri had a Big 12-high six players selected in the 2009 NFL Draft including WR Jeremy Maclin (Philadelphia Eagles), DT Evander Hood (Pittsburgh Steelers), S William Moore (Atlanta Falcons), TE Chase Coffman (Cincinnati Bengals), OL Colin Brown (Kansas City Chiefs) and DE Stryker Sulak (Oakland Raiders). That list doesn?t even include the person most responsible for the lopsided Mizzou wins over the past two seasons, QB Chase Daniel, who went undrafted and is currently with the New Orleans Saints.

Very few programs can lose that type of talent, particularly on offense and not witness a drop off in production. Last season the Tigers scored 40 points or more in eight of their 14 games. This season they haven?t done it yet except for the game against Furman, a I-AA program or to use the new terminology, a school from the Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

Of course, that loss of talent and drop off in offensive production hasn?t affected the most important metric for coach Gary Pinkel as his team is a perfect 4-0 on the season with wins over Illinois, Bowling Green, Nevada and the aforementioned Purple Paladins.

Blaine Gabbert is doing a pretty good impersonation of Daniel as only eight quarterbacks in the country have posted a better efficiency rating than his 168.6 and he's yet to throw an interception in 131 pass attempts. The sophomore is distributing the ball to dangerous receivers such as Danario Alexander and Jared Perry while RB Derrick Washington provides a nice option on the ground. Alexander in particular has proven to be a favorite target of Gabbert and he ranks second in the Big 12 in receptions (29) and receiving yards (404), trailing only Texas' Jordan Shipley.

Missouri won?t be the only program that has a different feel to it in this game. Now entering the second season under coach Bo Pelini, Nebraska is returning to its football roots. No, that doesn?t mean you?ll be seeing the vaunted Husker option attack on offense anytime soon, but it does mean the old school nasty defense is returning for Nebraska.

2007 must have been a particularly appalling year for Cornhusker fans with an appreciation for the way Nebraska football has been played over the years. That season, the last for coach Bill Callahan, Nebraska surrendered over 30 points in eight of its games, twice getting torched for over 60 points.

2008 saw some improvement on defense but that progress seems to have really picked up this season as through four games, the Huskers are ranked No. 1 nationally in scoring defense (7.0 points per game) and No. 23 in total defense (285 yards per game). It starts with a rock solid defensive line which is led by All-America candidate Ndamukong Suh, a punishing presence on the interior.

On offense, Nebraska is also slowly starting to return to its roots after going through a painful and awkward attempt by Callahan to convert the offense to a pro-style system. As mentioned, they aren?t using the classic option that was perfected by QBs such as Tommie Frazier and Eric Crouch but the offense is via the ground game more and more. Evidence of that was recently seen in the game at Virginia Tech where Nebraska RB Roy Helu steamrolled the Hokies defense for 169 rushing yards. The Cornhuskers lost that game in heartbreaking fashion 16-15 but overall it was a position sign for the direction of the program.

Helu, along with QB Zac Lee give opposing defenses plenty to prepare for and you can be sure that Missouri, fresh off a game in which Nevada gashed their defensive front for 218 rushing yards, will have to be ready.

Winning at Missouri, a place they haven?t notched a win at since 2001, would obviously be another big step in Pelini?s attempt to bring Nebraska back to the forefront of the Big 12. The Big 12 North figures to be a three horse race between Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas and so the winner here will have positioned themselves nicely for a run in the second half of the season.

Nebraska is a perfect 4-0 against the spread this season while Missouri is 2-1 ATS.

Nebraska Cornhuskers at Missouri Tigers (+3, 54)

Line Movement

Missouri was catching a point in some places and two points in most shops when this number came out Sunday. The line has been driven up to three points across the board and that is where it will likely stay until we get closer to game time.

The total opened at 54.5 to 55 and has been brought down to 54 and in some cases 53.5, so the early money is on a low scoring game.

Injuries

There are no significant injuries to report on either side.

Weather

It looks like a perfect fall night in the Midwest with mostly clear skies and a temperature of 63 degrees with hardly any wind.

Return of the Blackshirts

Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini has brought some fight back into the once-proud Huskers defense. They allowed 37.9 ppg and 476.8 ypg in 2007, which were both school records and neither of which they were proud of. In 2008, they dropped those averages to 28.5 ppg and 349.9 ypg, which were certainly not great but it was an improvement.

Through four games in 2009, the ?Blackshirts? are back as they have allowed only 7.0 ppg and 285.5 ypg, first and 21st respectively in the country. Playing three teams from the Sun Belt has had a lot to do with this but it held Virginia Tech to 16 points, its lowest output of the season, and only 278 total yards.

A strong defensive performance on the road against one of the league's best offenses would at least be a sign that the Huskers are returning to their glory days, or at least no longer embarrassing themselves.

Chase who?

If someone was asked who would be leading the Big 12 in passing efficiency a quarter of the way into the season, the answer would probably have a last name of Bradford, McCoy, Robinson or even Reesing.

Not Gabbert.

Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert is leading the conference in pass efficiency, throwing for 11 touchdowns and no interceptions with 1,161 yards through four games. Where did he come from?

He is actually the highest recruit for a quarterback Missouri has even landed and ironically, he originally committed to Nebraska but backed out after the firing of head coach Bill Callahan.

?I?m looking forward to playing them like all of my games,? Gabbert told reporters. ?But the fact it?s Nebraska doesn?t make it any bigger or more important for me.?

New king of the mountain

Nebraska used to rule this series, defeating the Tigers 24 straight times from 1979 to 2002 by an average of more than three touchdowns. Since then, it has been the complete opposite as Missouri has won four of the last six meetings including three straight at home.

This also includes a Tigers win in Lincoln last season by a score of 52-17, which was their first win at Memorial Stadium since 1978. The Huskers did not take it well and coach Pelini was ?embarrassed? and apologized ?to the state of Nebraska [and] everyone associated with Nebraska football.?

That makes 93 points allowed to the Tigers over the last two seasons so Nebraska is really hoping the early success of the defense is no fluke. If so, another apology may be in store after Thursday.

Rushing dogs no more

While the passing game has been efficient, the Tigers? running game has been a huge disappointment.

A year ago, they averaged 5.2 ypc including 5.8 ypg in its four non-conference games. But this year, it's down to 3.8 ypc. Even though they are averaging eight more carries per game, they are averaging 143 ypg which is 51 yards less per game than at this point last season.

Missouri has changed its blocking schemes this season, going to a zone system, and Tigers head coach Gary Pinkel said the transition is taking longer than they had expected. Now that conference action is underway, it had better come around quickly.

Conversely, the Huskers averaged 155.5 ypg on 4.8 ypc during non-conference action last season. Through four games this year, they have averaged 183.8 ypg on 5.7 ypc.

Bottom Line

Both teams have been cashing tickets this season with Nebraska a perfect 4-0 ATS and Missouri not far behind at 3-1 ATS. Both teams have kept the scoring down more than expected as they come in with identical 3-1 records to the Under.

The Huskers are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games while the Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

The home team has covered six of the last seven meetings in this series.

Tigers and Cornhuskers tangle in Big 12 Opener

Tigers and Cornhuskers tangle in Big 12 Opener

Tigers and Cornhuskers tangle in Big 12 Opener

This increasingly bitter rivalry has been played every since 1922. Missouri has outscored Nebraska 92-23 the last two years and is going for its first three game sweep in 40 years. Coach Bo Pelini claims to not care about last season?s 52-17 Missouri victory as they prepare for the road trip to Columbia.

?It really doesn?t matter what happened last year,? said the second-year Nebraska coach. ?It?s a different point in time, different scenario, different players. Not really an issue with me.

?We got out-executed last year. We just got beat. What happened last year isn?t going to have any correlation on what happens this year, unless we let it.?

Nebraska (3-1, 4-0 ATS) showed no ill-effects from last minute loss to Virginia Tech 16-15 and laid out Louisiana-Lafayette 55-0 as 30-point favorites in last contest. This will be the Big 12 opener for both teams and coach Pelini knows what to do.

?Now, the season starts. Right now,? Pelini said. ?That?s the way we look at it. It?s time to put the foot on the gas pedal and go, because we have a long season ahead of us and a lot of challenges coming up.?

Quarterback Zac Lee has only had one poor performance and that came against the relentless defensive pressure of Virginia Tech, which Missouri doesn?t seem capable of producing. The Cornhuskers are 3-8 ATS as Big 12 road favorites.

Missouri (4-0, 2-1 ATS) stayed unbeaten, winning and covering their first true road of the season at Nevada 31-21. The Tigers have to be ready to play, but can?t go emotionally overboard, playing at Oklahoma State next, followed by the Sooners arriving in Columbia. Sophomore quarterback Blaine Gabbert threw for 414 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-40 passing in Reno. Gabbert has some of the best targets to throw to in the Big 12 like Danario Alexander and had five pass plays of 30 or more yards in last outing.

Missouri still has things to work on, since the running game stalled against Nevada (78 yards) and they allowed over 200 yards on the ground. Missouri is 17-5 ATS in home games after gaining 100 or less rushing yards last game.

This will be the Tigers second underdog role of the season, with Bookmaker.com having them catching three points with total of 54.
?We?re going in as underdogs this year,? Missouri tailback Derrick Washington said. ?A lot of people didn?t think we?d be 4-0 coming into this game. Everybody?s doubting us.?

The Tigers have won 23 of last 27 contests (15-11-1 ATS) at Memorial Stadium and will need Gabbert to have big game and play mistake free for nation?s No. 10 pass offense at 310 yards per game. Coach Gary Pinkel?s team isn?t anything special defensively; however they have been much improved over a year ago and are 8-2 ATS at Faurot Field against opponent with revenge.

Coach Pelini?s influence is being found with the Huskers first in scoring defense (7 PPG) in the country and 21st in total defense. Be sure to watch nose tackle Ndamukong Suh, he?s a beast in the middle.

Nebraska will try to run the ball with talented junior Roy Helu, which should open up passing lanes for Lee. Numbers don?t favor the ?Children of the Corn? (Rece Davis speak), who are 12-30 ATS in road games off a home win by 17 points or more and 1-14 SU (4-10-1 ATS) as visitors against ranked opponent.

It?s a special start time for Thursday college football on ESPN at 9 Eastern and the home team is 6-1 ATS since 2002.
