HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 12:30 p.m.

Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up

Paddy's Magic - Big rider switch to Joel Rosario for the money shot; must leave the starting gate better.

Remember Mike - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; live rider in David Flores.

Long Shot - Learn the Sport

Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

Diferentkindagreat - Broke his maiden with complete authority; big class rise to face winners, looks like a runner.

Charlie and Chris - Claimed by Hector Palma away from John Sadler; hard to expect him to improve this colt.

Long Shot - Box Office Star

Race 3 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $42,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Ruffled Feathers - Saves all the ground inside for Alex Solis; covered up trip, should be rallying fast late.

Silver Heat - Tactical speed to sit a nice trip; she is an Unusual Heat for Barry Abrams that should adore grass.

Long Shot - Call Me Dutchess

Race 4 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $14,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up

Dynamalt - Claimed two back by Jack Carava for $25K; he drops his price in half in search of earning his money back.

Collato - Has run second in 3-of-4 starts; wouldn't be surprised if he breaks thru with hot riding David Flores up.

Long Shot - Morton Owen

Race 5 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $44,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up

Viscount - Bob Baffert barn is hotter than hot right now; uncoupled entrymate Canyon Drive has a puncher's chance too.

Riviera Cocktail - Above average U.S. debut at Del Mar for Neil Drysdale; could have a high ceiling.

Long Shot - Canyon Drive

Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $40,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Gumption - Bruce Headley hires Joel Rosario; maybe he can convince this filly to win with strong late handling.

Fund Raiser - FTS from Bob Baffert; the barn is winning with everything, watch the tote board for clues.

Long Shot - Sabina Fay

Race 7 - 1 1/4 (turf), $300,000 Clement L. Hirsch, 3-year-olds and up

Presious Passion - Gets a fast and firm billiard table to run over; ultimate catch me if you can front runner.

Medici Code - Big rider switch to Garrett Gomez who had choices; saves ground, bides his time and fires fast late.

Long Shot - Artiste Royal

Race 8 - 6 furlongs, $300,000 Ancient Title, 3-year-olds and up

Gayego - Wasn't his best in return, but it was more than good enough; this should prep him perfectly for the BC Sprint.

Supreme Summit - Highly regarded colt was dead game chasing lone speed; picks up the Mig, which can help his price.

Long Shot - Delta Storm

Race 9 - 1 1/8th miles, Purse $13,000, Claiming $10,000, 3-year-olds and up

Camisado - Cheap horses seldom win back to back, can this guy make it three in a row; best form in a long, long time.

One Chin Again - Exits the Cal Cup Classic, a much tougher heat than this; gets the great Kieren Fallon to ride.

Long Shot - Dadsalittleunusal

Best Bet - Gayego (race 8)

Santa Anita Saturday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/7/$44.60; Long Shots, 10/1/$16.20; Best Bet, 1/1/$2.80

Santa Anita Totals - 151/34/$231.40; Long Shots, 76/13/$158.40; Best Bets, 9/6/$27.00

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #10 Laguna Amiga (2/1) in race 10 at Hawthorne. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Double Domino ran second at Belmont Park paying $4.40 to place and $2.70 to show. Stats - 147/110/$829.50

At the Gate - Sunday

At the Gate - Sunday

At the Gate - Sunday

It was no surprise to see Zenyatta make it 13 in a row in the Lady?s Secret (G1) at Santa Anita on Saturday, rolling over her overmatched foes by 1 ? lengths in style, returning $2.80 for the victory.

The only question now is whether she defends her title in the Breeders? Cup Ladies Classic or takes on the boys in the Breeders? Cup Classic.

Owner Jerry Moss said Zenyatta would be pre-entered in both races.

"The horse is going to make the decision," he said. "We want her to do well and be safe and be happy, but we also want to see how much she's got in her tank."

What was a surprise on Saturday was the winner of the Goodwood (G1) Handicap.

The race featured Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird as well as Grade 1 winners Tiago, Colonel John, Richard?s Kid, and Monzante, and Grade 2 winners Parading and Informed.

The race was won by European invader Gitano Hernando, who was coming off an allowance race at Wolverhampton. His best effort was a third in a Group 3 at Chester back in May.

The three year old colt was a neck winner over Colonel John, paying $38.00 for the win.

That might be bad news for the U.S. runners pointing toward the Classic. If they can?t beat Gitano Hernando, how the heck are they going to beat Sea the Stars, Rip Van Winkle, and Mastercraftsman?

The ?08 Classic exacta went to Euro invaders Raven?s Pass and Henrythenavigator, and after Saturday?s Goodwood, it sure looks like the lion?s share of the $5 million Classic purse may be heading back to the other side of the pond again this year.

Here is today's opening race from Belmont Park to get our day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $15,000N2L (1:00 ET)

#7 Cappella Reale 6/1

#3 Fortune Faded 4/1

#1 Living for This 5/2

#8 Three Bridge Road 5/1

Analysis: #7 Cappella Reale is back with state breds here after finishing a distant seventh last out against $10K non winners of two. Two back in the mud against NY breds the colt checked in a decent second, 4 1/4 lengths clear of the rest of the field. Balsamo is the named trainer; she is the assistant to Jacobson, who is still the owner so I suspect he might be on a short "vacation." It's a real slow looking group here and not much else in here to get excited about.

#3 Fortune Faded prompted the early pace and faded badly to finish eighth last out against $25K non winners of two. The gelding is back in with state breds and drops into a softer spot here. Encouraging to see Edgar stick despite this gelding getting beaten by double digit lengths in each of his last three outings.

Wagering

WIN: #7 to win at 7/2 or better.

Track was fast, turf firm. Track maintenance crew worked on turf courses Friday evening and yesterday morning following two fatal breakdowns in back-to-back turf races on Friday's card.
* After handicapping tomorrow's first race, we would call this place "Finger Lakes South," but that would be insult to Finger Lakes. In field of eight New York-breds, non-winners of 2 lifetime running for 15G tag, just one horse finished within 10 lengths of winner last out, and he ran seventh beaten 5?; average losing margin was 17 lengths. Do people actually bet real money on a race like this?

FIRST RACE: Keeping the Honor, bet down to even money dropping from 50G to 25G in his second start back off long layoff for Rick Dutrow Jr., got perfect ground-saving trip under Javier Castellano going mile on turf. He tucked inside tracking pace set by 27-1 Winloc's Saint Ray, swung off rail to bid for lead midstretch and drew clear.
SECOND RACE: Steve Asmussen's 2-year-old colt Fayoum, who dueled for lead, settled for second in both starts at Old Spa going 5? furlongs, was 3-5 going six under John Velazquez. He was hooked immediately by West Point Stable's Middle of the Nite, a distant 10th after breaking slowly in well-bet (5-1) debut at Saratoga when trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, now in Tom Albertrani's barn. Those two waged a furious duel, joined by 5-2 City Wolf, Bobby Frankel firster with Ramon Dominguez up, around the turn. Fayoum was the first to crack, dropping back in midstretch, but Middle of the Nite kept on going, drawing clear through final furlong. City Wolf hung on for second over late-running El Primero.
SIXTH RACE: Maylan Studart, got off the schneid in this 12.5G claimer, winning her first race since May. Studart, who broke her femur on June 18 when a horse reared and fell on her in a barn accident, resumed riding the last two weeks of the Saratoga meet. Here she was riding 9-1 Morine's Victory, who would have been much longer odds if he weren't coupled with Raceland for Neal Terracciano. Morine's Victory, an 8-year-old gelding eased in a similar spot last out, beaten 11 and 13 lengths in his prior two starts, dropped back well off the early pace, rallied through traffic top of stretch and blew past Raceland and 25-1 Hedge Fund to take command late.

BEST BET: Sure as Gold (2nd race)

First Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Bocce Ball 2. Living for This 3. Mr. Petersson

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a Sunday opener where no one was better than seventh last time out, BOCCE BALL gets the most timid of endorsements after an excusable fade while "pulling" early on turf, followed by a freshening; went well three starts on this track at the spring meet. LIVING FOR THIS is the only allowance dropdown, and indeed was overmatched twice in six days before layoff; beat MR. PETERSSON and SMARTY KARAKORUM in debut victory here.

Second Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Sure as Gold 2. Silky Serenade 3. Flourish

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SURE AS GOLD, a $320k purchase in April, ducked out at the break and was four wide into the lane when unveiled at 5fs upstate; likely to go forward for trainer who had 11 juvenile winners at the meet through Thursday. SILKY SERENADE is a half-sister to Private Vow, winner of the Futurity and Kentucky Jockey Club at 2; improved workout Oct. 1. FLOURISH is a half to champion Sightseek and Tates Creek, seven-figure earners on dirt and turf, respectively, for this top-shelf outfit.

Third Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Fearless Vision 2. Independence War 3. Fuhrever Dancing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FEARLESS VISION middle moved into a sharp pace around the turn to take the lead, and held second in a fast mile (1:34.28) when returned in a $30k claimer on Friday; barn has been known to score with quick turnarounds like this. INDEPENDENCE WAR is doubled in price first off the claim, after a big-figure score in local bow; 7 for 17 on dirt, has some back class. FUHREVER DANCING has been freshened since setting a relatively moderate pace and giving way eight weeks ago; sharp on the lead all three starts this track.

Fourth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Girolamo 2. Kensei 3. Burley's Gold

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GIROLAMO rated nicely setting a measured pace under pressure in comeback, and then drew off with authority to take his second-level condition at this distance opening weekend; late-blooming 3-year-old has continued to train well and gives every indication of being this good. KENSEI has had a six-week breather since fading in sloppy Travers; improved steadily through the summer prior to that, owns both of the field's graded stakes wins. BURLEY'S GOLD raced wide and far back while carefully handled at Saratoga, but impressed before and afterward winning maiden and fast-paced N1x on this track.

Fifth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Cats Kitty 2. Evil Genius 3. Helvi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CATS KITTY broke from the inside post and was within two lengths of the lead at the pace call while on the rail Alabama Day - a day when horses racing in outside paths appeared to have the best of it; blew out swiftly Wednesday. EVIL GENIUS hopped at the break to get away slowest, closed a gap and wound up beaten 1 1/4 lengths for third in Polytrack bow vs. Jealous Again, who returned to run second in the Ky. Cup Juvenile a few weeks later; working right along for new trainer. HELVI chased odds-on firster Cappiwino when cut back to a sprint last out; Maryland invader meets New York-breds for the first time.

Sixth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Fateh Field 2. Wall Street Wonder 3. Rodman

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to a vet-list snafu originating at Presque Isle, FATEH FIELD was ineligible and disqualified from purse money here Sept. 17, when he altered course and outfinished WALL STREET WONDER; slow-breaking gelding produced a big effort six days later in more advanced condition. Wall Street Wonder is on a favorable figure pattern after matching Beyer tops in stakes last winter/spring on turf and synthetic; capable of turning the tables on top pick on the heels of Thursday's bullet work. RODMAN failed to punch it in when stretched out to a mile first time on turf, but still maintained his best figures from back-to-back wins on wet dirt at the Spa; well suited to this long one-turn sprint.

Seventh Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Rose Catherine 2. Flashy Flirt 3. Amirahy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROSE CATHERINE showed improvement second time out, has trained during the ensuing 10 weeks and returns for barn that's been winning most of the 2-year-old races around here lately; top-rated for turf sprints on the Tomlinson rankings. FLASHY FLIRT is out of Our Exploit, who is a half-sister to Changing World - a graded turf stakes winner for these connections; pedigree and Sept. 30 drill indicate daughter of Gulch can handle dirt. AMIRAHY is out of So Sultry, who is a half-sister to Night Patrol, winner of the Grade 2 Oak Tree BC Mile on turf. SAPPHIRE MINK has been readied by a dangerous first-out trainer, and has South African blood on the dam's side that suggests an affinity for grass.

Eighth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Wittenberg Miss 2. Point to Royalty 3. Refinery Fire

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WITTENBERG MISS was bet to 3-1 first time out in a sloppy off-the-turf sprint, and returns more than five months later; half-sister to seven winners, likely to improve if this race stays on the turf. POINT TO ROYALTY takes an agreeable turnback to a long sprint, after forcing the pace and weakening crucial stages of second try at 1 1/8 miles; better finish expected. REFINERY FIRE (cutting back) and ROYAL VALENTINE (stretching out) are closely matched based on their figures at surrounding distances; the latter also had post 11 only previous 7f turf try.

Ninth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Pinckney Hill 2. Picou 3. Classic Campaign

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PINCKNEY HILL showed high promise earlier this year, winning his first two starts with sustained late runs; tough setup in overnight stake July 1 as Sal the Barber (subsequently second in the Grade 2 Hall Of Fame) set leisurely fractions. PICOU went well in return from extended absence, missing by half-length to Sette E Mezzo, who returned to run second in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch; made up 11 lengths off seven-week break here. CLASSIC CAMPAIGN is easily the most accomplished grass horse in the field, though 7-year-old has lost a few miles off his fastball during second half of '09; gutsy score over straight $50k claimers last out.

Tenth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Sachem Road 2. Fairy Wand 3. Casa Di Vino

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SACHEM ROAD was a clear second in her first start on turf behind 3-5 Better Than Swiss, decisioning several of these; candidate to improve again second time back from layoff. FAIRY WAND took a clear lead into midstretch this course and distance back in May, and held second behind Sezzana, who returned to win N1x allowance and the Niagra Stakes; may shake loose first out since opening day at the Spa. CASA DI VINO (also eligible), SONG FOR PUPCAKE and CITY VICE figure close with the top two based on their recent turf races.

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 11
10/11/2009
1st Race
MINING FOR SILVER (#1) has had a solid year and won a race over this course in April. Give him the edge with jockey Miguel Mena picking up the mount for trainer Tom Amoss. WISDOM WALK (#7) was an impressive winner in his first race back after a long layoff. He didn?t beat much in that one but still looks dangerous. T.C. CHAMP (#8) has the speed to be a contender.

2nd Race
BL?S PAPA COO COO (#5) had a three-race win streak snapped last out but drops back down a notch in class and appears to be in a good spot to score today. DOUBLE OR NOTHING (#2) also takes the class drop and trainer Mike Maker and jockey Julien Leparoux are always tough to beat. CHESEAPEAKE BAY (#9) definitely fits with these.

3rd Race
GREEN POND (#3) showed improvement last out and has posted some solid works over the Keeneland Polytrack. Trainer Ken McPeek figures to have her ready to get her maiden win in this one. SAPPHIRESNDIAMONDS (#10) hasn?t lived up to early expectations but is a steady runner and John Velazquez picks up the mount. SHAMELESS (#7) is a contender.

4th Race
SUCCESSFUL MISSION (#3) didn?t fire in his first race back after the layoff but should move forward off of that effort. He rates the slight edge in what looks like a wide-open turf test. REZIF (#1) ran a huge race to finish second behind multiple stakes winner Cloudy?s Knight at Kentucky Downs. Anything close to that performance would make him dangerous. BEARPATH (#2) should be in good position throughout and is a contender.

5th Race
MINE ALL MINE (#2) drops in for a tag for the first time and she figures to handle this bunch as the solid favorite. DIFFERENTIATE (#10) is from the strong barn of trainer Wayne Catalano. She was a bit overmatched last out but is back in for a tag and is the one to beat. JUST PICK ME (#8) has the speed to be dangerous under Julien Leparoux.

6th Race
SHARPEST CAT (#9) has been in the money in eight of his 10 races this year. He ran well in his only start here at Keeneland and can definitely get the distance. Trainer Akiko Gothard and jockey Willie Martinez teamed up to win several races at Presque Isle and this one gets the nod today. HELICOPTER (#4) has won five of his last seven and is the one to beat. BIG BOLD PLACE (#8) rates a chance.

7th Race
NO SUCH WORD (#2) showed improvement in her second career start. Larry Jones is having another solid year and should have this one ready to win under Jeremy Rose. STRICTLY (#4) is training well for trainer Andrew McKeever, who is very good with debuting runners. She could add some value to the gimmicks. AUTUMN EYES (#11) is a solid contender.

8th Race?Bourbon (G3)
INTERACTIF (#4) comes off a solid win in the With Anticipation. He showed huge improvement in his first turf race and should make it two in a row for trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Kent Desormeaux. ASPHALT (#5) won a fast sprint race on the Belmont turf. He should be on or near the lead and is the one to catch. EXHI (#8) is another Pletcher runner who moved forward on the grass and has to be considered.

9th Race?Juddmonte Spinster (G1)
SWIFT TEMPER (#8) is a five-year-old who has gotten much better with age. She was very impressive beat the odds on favorite in the Grade 1 Ruffian and has earned over $1 million this year. Her only race on the Polytrack was a dismal effort but that was long ago and she is a different horse now. Give her the edge in the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster. MUSHKA (#11) is one of two in here from the Bill Mott barn. Jockey Kent Desormeaux opts for her over Indescribable and she won her only race over this strip. INDESCRIBABLE (#10) loves the Polytrack and will be a contender.

10th Race
AARONESS (#4) ran well in her U.S. debut and should move forward off that effort. Jockey Julien Leparoux picks up the mount for Michael Matz and she will be tough to handle in this one. SEA GULL (#2) beat the top pick last out and is a definite threat again. GOLD D?ORO (#7) looked good breaking her maiden and seems to be improving.

Juddmonte Spinster-G1 Analysis
10/11/2009
GINGER BREW has had a couple months off since her wire job win in the Bellemahne Stakes at Woodbine on poly; she has been off the board just once this year and that came at Tampa when she experienced traffic problems and couldn't get in the clear soon enough; she's got a 100% in the money mark on polytrack and also at this 1 1/8 mile distance and seems the most versatile runner in this field; the one to beat. INDESCRIBEABLE won the Ky Cup Distaff-G3 at Turfway last time out and has won two of her four starts over the Keeneland poly, including the Doubledogdare-G3 here last April; she too has yet to be off the board at this distance and would be no surprise in the winner's circle. MUSHKA is coming into this race off a victory in the Glen Falls Handicap-G3 at Saratoga over 1 3/8 miles and can boast an easy victory over this surface here last April under Desormeaux and should make her presence felt. DAWN AFTER DAWN has had a couple disappointing races at Del Mar, but was 3rd in both her Keeneland races in the past and has won over half her bankroll on synthetic surfaces; she deserves being used in the exotics along with SWIFT TEMPER, winner of the Ruffian Handicap-G1 with ease last time out and also the 1 1/4 mile Delaware Park Handicap-G2 this summer; she makes just her 2nd start on polytrack today.

Friday's card had alot of winners coming from off the pace but that trend could change as the track dries out. The day was quite exciting with several long shots hitting the board. Today's card features the Grade 3 Bourbon going 1 1/16 mile on the grass. Interactif is coming off an impressive performance in the Grade 3 With Anticipation at Saratoga. He looks like the one to beat in this one.The Grade 1 Spinster is a full field of stellar fillies and mares as always. Ginger Brew has been very successful over the synthetic surfaces and come off a strong win August 15th at Woodbine. She runs well fresh and expect her to be very tough in this race. Swift Temper is on top of her game but brings questions over the synthetic surfaces.
