HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 2 p.m.

Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Unusally Hot - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this comfortable level; tiny edge in a tight fit.

Quickly Gone - Another taking a big class drop to face easier; has speed to get involved from the get go.

Long Shot - Sky Marni

Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds

Warren's Princess - Second time out Cliff Sise is a winning angle; experience of one race at Fairplex will help.

Del Mar Truckee - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to compete.

Long Shot - Roar's Dancer

Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $26,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Raiding Party - When a top trainer, like Mike Mitchell, runs a horse back quick, that's a good sign; the one to beat.

Silent Stalk - Speedy sort has found his comfort level; speed to lead, turf rail out 24 feet will help her a lot.

Long Shot - Shesaperfectdoll

Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

You Can Dream - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Bob Baffert takes the blinkers off.

Princess Suances - Another taking the big class drop from MSW to maiden claiming; watch the tote board for clues.

Long Shot - Flyinginformation

Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $14,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Glory Forever - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; notice she was favored in debut.

Daniella Roth - She has had a million chances; still she's run fast enough to be a part of the number.

Long Shot - Kimmyv

Race 6 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $42,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up

Sartorial - Dead late closer could see a contested early pace; just missed last time in a tougher field.

Our Partner - Speedy sort can save all the ground inside; suspect Joel Rosario will take back and grind late.

Long Shot - Noblety

Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $42,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Toro Bonito - If class means anything, she'll be tough to beat; been away 9-months exiting three graded stakes.

Speedin Excess - The best races of her life have come over synthetics; tacital speed to sit a perfect trip.

Long Shot - Stunningly

Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $14,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

Good Guy - Was well meant at Fairplex in a solid second; slight improvement should get the job done.

Louie Tre - Ran like a short horse at Fairplex; his debut race, if repeated, is fast enough to upset these.

Long Shot - Trueno

Best Bet - You Can Dream (race 4)

Santa Anita Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 14/4/$23.00; Long Shots, 8/4/$30.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Totals - 214/54/$368.80; Long Shots, 108/20/$224.40; Best Bets, 13/7/$31.40

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #7 Fitzaslew (5/2) in race 8 at Keeneland. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Cruise was scratched at Hawthorne . Stats - 150/113/$856.50

RICHARD ENG: Breeders' Cup special despite top stars' absence

RICHARD ENG: Breeders' Cup special despite top stars' absence

RICHARD ENG: Breeders' Cup special despite top stars' absence
Are horse racing fans pessimists or optimists at heart? This year's Breeders' Cup offers a good litmus test.

Racing's two biggest superstars, Rachel Alexandra and Sea the Stars, will not run in the Nov. 6-7 event at Santa Anita.

I can already hear the glass-is-half-empty gang bemoaning the lack of stars at the Breeders' Cup. How can the sport crown champions when the top two horses aren't even there? And then, of course, there's the notion that running back-to-back Breeders' Cups over a synthetic surface does not yield true results.

But the glass-is-half-full side will revel in the Breeders' Cup's 14 stakes races with overflow fields, including most of the best horses in training. Handicappers will not find two better days to play the races.

Unfortunately, Breeders' Cup president Greg Avioli sees the glass, and perhaps the stands at Santa Anita, as half full.

He recently said Sea the Stars would add 10,000 fans and $10 million in handle to the Breeders' Cup -- what a cop-out.

The Breeders' Cup is similar to the Super Bowl in that regardless of who's playing, you market the event.

All Avioli is doing is putting a convenient excuse in place in case the attendance and handle numbers tank.

After gouging fans at last year's event, the Breeders' Cup has backpedaled on prices. It will be much more affordable to attend this year, and hopefully fans will show up even if Rachel Alexandra and Sea the Stars will not.

By the way, the last thing racing needs to do is paint the owners of Rachel Alexandra and Sea the Stars in a bad light. For as much money as horse owners put into racing, and for as little as they take out, they certainly are free to decide when and where their horses run.

But I must say I'm anticipating the arrival of the Daily Racing Form Breeders' Cup advance edition like a kid waits for Christmas. I guess that alone puts me on the glass-half-full side.

Which side are you on?

? PICK THE PONIES -- The last big-money handicapping tournament in Las Vegas for 2009 will be Pick The Ponies at the Las Vegas Hilton from Nov. 4 to 6.

Race and sports book director Jay Kornegay and his staff cap entries at 200, so sign up early.

At the Gate - Friday

At the Gate - Friday

At the Gate - Friday

It looks likely we will be off the turf on Friday at Belmont Park as the rains are forecast to continue right through the weekend.

The NYRA has already postponed Saturday?s $100,000-added Athenia for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up going 1 1/16 miles on the turf course, and moved it to Wednesday, Oct. 21.

I am assuming we are going to be off the turf today in New York, and there are four scheduled to go on the turf course today.

We might see rain at Keeneland today, and there are two races carded for the turf including the Franklin County Stakes at 5 ? furlongs.

Yesterday?s Jessamine was moved to the main track and it lost its Breeders? Cup Challenge ?Win and You?re In? status in the process.

It was a soggy Thursday, but we turned a profit with my top picks at both tracks. There were three winners on top at Keeneland, producing a +33% +ROI.

At Belmont Park we had three winners on top including Hangingonaprayer ($17.20) in the opener, producing a +85% +ROI with my top picks.

Here is today's opening race from Keeneland to get our day off to a good start:

KEE Race 1 Clm $10,000 (1:05 ET)

#5 It's a Miracle 3/1

#4 Magical Prize 20/1

#12 South Beach Luv 4/1

#2 Thecleverest 15/1

Analysis: #5 It's a Miracle chased a loose on the lead gate to wire winner last out over the poly at Arlington, settling for second for a $10K tag. The filly was 3 1/2 lengths clear of the rest of the field in the effort. The filly makes her third start of her current form cycle for the Catalano barn and she has landed in the exacta in all four of her trips over the fake stuff. AP shippers have fared very well here early in the meet, 11 winners over the past three days of the meeting made their last starts in Chi-Town.

#4 Magical Prize ships in from Turfway where she was beaten just a nose for a $5K tag facing non winners of two races in six months. She is stepping into open company here but looks headed in the right direction and will be a big price in here. She beat open $10K foes here last fall at 21/1.

Wagering

WIN: #5 to win at 2/1 or better.

EX: 4,5 / 2,4,5,12

TRI: 4,5 / 2,4,5,12 / 1,2,4,5,10,12

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 9 Clm $12,500B (5:17 ET)

#8 Moose Man 6/1

#9 Persian 5/2

#3 May Day Now 9/2

#10 Pacific Star 3/1

Analysis: #8 Moose Man is coming off a third place finish at Del Park against $10K foes that are non winners of three. Two runners have come out of the race to run back and they both won. The winner Lite Up the Nite came back to beat restricted $5K foes at Laurel Park. The gelding owns a win over the main track here and has a good edge in early and mid pace numbers.

#9 Persian beat $25K non winners of two last out in his first start for the Dutrow barn off the claim. The gelding earned a career top in his first go for the new barn. The gelding has run okay over a wet track and this looks like a good spot here jammed in for a $12.5K tag.

Wagering

WIN: #8 to win at 7/2 or better.

EX: 8,9 / 3,8,9,10

TRI: 8,9 / 3,8,9,10 / 3,6,7,8,9,10

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Keeneland:

KEE Race 9 Franklin County S. (5:05 ET)

#2 Libor Lady 9/2

#1 Nadeshiko 20/1

#6 Canadian Ballet 3/1

#4 Dubai Majesty 7/2

Analysis: #2 Libor Lady returns off a two month freshening, shipping in for the very sharp Pino barn. Last out over the Tapeta the filly set the early fractions and weakened to finish fourth. The winner of the race was Sweet Lorena, who came back to finish second in the PI Masters (G3) in her next outing. The filly has done her best work on grass, winning 6 of 10 in her career. She won the Klassy Briefcase two back in NJ, her third win in a row. She owns solid early and mid pace numbers and looks tough if she shakes loose early.

#1 Nadeshiko won the Remington F&M Sprint last out on dirt, with the runner up Classify coming back to win a $50K stake in her next outing at Remington on Oct. 10. The Foley runner comes into this race in razor sharp form but is 0 for 2 on turf in her career. One as a fifth and the other was going a route of ground. Her form is so good right now I'm tossing her in the mix here for a sharp barn.

Wagering

WIN: #2 to win at 3/1 or better.

EX: 1,2 / 1,2,4,6

TRI: 1,2 / 1,2,4,6 / 1,2,4,6,7,10

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Keeneland

R1: #4 Magical Prize 20/1

R1: #2 Thecleverest 15/1

R2: #12 Greenhouse Banker 12/1

R2: #9 Run With Eagles 10/1

R4: #4 Bootprints 8/1

R5: #4 Cherokee Spirit 10/1

R6: #4 Swashbuckler 8/1

R6: #2 Celeritas Plus 8/1

R7: #5 Duveen 20/1

R8: #5 Keefer 8/1

R9: #1 Nadeshiko 20/1

R10: #10 Look Out Man 10/1

Belmont Park

R1: #9 Speed Dating 8/1

R1: #6 Corey?s Coming 10/1

R3: #3 Khancord Kid 8/1

R5: #6 Those Wer the Days 8/1

R6: #5 Blazing Moon 10/1

R7: #6 Dreamnote 10/1

Good luck today!

BEST BET: Wild Conga (4th race)

First Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. One Tough Belle 2. Roll the Di 3. Princess Maura

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ONE TOUGH BELLE was off slowest from the rail, finished evenly beaten half-length by SOUTHSIDE BABE when back on turf for first time in over a year; has won fresh, moves up (three-time winner on Belmont's main track) if race comes off turf. ROLL THE DI was far back after an awkward break, closed gamely to miss in photo off similar layoff this course and distance July 15; only non-exacta finish on local turf was a stake. PRINCESS MAURA is a threat to wire the field if able to shake loose from SPEED DATING and/or EXONERATED, as she did vs. N1x rivals at 7fs this course in May; mate LIGHT TACTIC has been in stakes ever since winning first two starts.

Second Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. V Sat 2. Citizen's Arrest 3. Hurricane Hal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

V SAT pressed the pace between horses through sharp fractions when unveiled opening day at Saratoga; bred for wet, may be the main speed depending on what the six first-time starters can do. Among those, CITIZEN'S ARREST is a half to a six-figure earner and has trained crisply for trainer 13 for 28 with 2YOs at the meet. HURRICANE HAL a $650k purchase in March, also bred for off going. BASIN STREET is the first runner out of Dat You Miz Blue, a multiple sprint stakes winner on this circuit.

Third Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Cuff Me 2. Subtle Sweetness 3. Silver Shoes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CUFF ME was solidly backed first out, and drew away after dueling for the lead early in the season; returns off promising works for high-percentage trainer, wet track an obvious plus. SUBTLE SWEETNESS has been freshened after winning twice vs. open company in August; improved gate speed at Delaware following private purchase. SILVER SHOES, KHANCORD KID (turf) and SKY FEVER have similar top figures so far, but haven't been as effective on wet dirt.

Fourth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Wild Conga 2. Ian Kicks 3. We Get It

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WILD CONGA has never taken a backward step in terms of dirt figures, and is substantially faster than most of these based on his recent form; someone would have to improve to beat the $35k dropdown. IAN KICKS is the lone special-weight dropper and was in tough in debut vs. Al's Deputy, who is now an allowance winner; first-time Lasix, improved workout 10 days ago. WE GET IT matched top figure when returned from 10-week absence; prone to slow starts.

Fifth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Royal Stocks 2. Peteloveshisboots 3. Tiger Willie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROYAL STOCKS was bumped and checked at the start, drifted wide while racing greenly in debut; takes a drop to $50k and has some turf pedigree. PETELOVESHISBOOTS earned back his purchase price (plus $50) when he chased front-end winner Show the Way J and was overtaken late by TIGER WILLIE in their Sept. 18 meeting; might get a clear lead in this matchup, and speed has been holding well in 6f turf sprints on the inner. Tiger Willie is back quickly after chasing in a route; loses Prado to the top one.

Sixth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Driven by Power 2. Fiddlers Patriot 3. Joko Motion

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DRIVEN BY POWER went evenly while never a threat in debut, but second-time starters from this barn tend to improve, especially when they're first-time Lasix; bred to love it wet. FIDDLERS PATRIOT dueled with 3-5 Star of New York and remained clear from 0-for-16 SPENCERIFIC in a good first try; may prove tough to catch. JOKO MOTION is a half-brother to Indian Hawke, whose $355k earnings included a score in the Albany; dangerous under-the-radar owner/trainer.

Seventh Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Our Lady Liberty 2. Five Star Maria 3. Lights Out Lisa

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If switched to dirt, OUR LADY LIBERTY showed improvement with Lasix added second out, despite steadying in the early going; trainer 10 for 40 when adding blinkers. On turf, FIVE STAR MARIA dueled early, dropped back to third and came again to wind up a clear second to Khancord Kid (entered in race 3) first time on turf; worked well Sunday. LIGHTS OUT LISA split horses and finished willingly behind loose-on-the-lead Ms. Thanksgiving in bow; back in nine days, as turf sprint opportunities for the season dwindle down to a precious few.

Eighth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Triple Tax Exempt 2. Lemon Punch 3. Wild Awake

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TRIPLE TAX EXEMPT has made steady progress since switched to turf, improving with each start capped by close fourth vs. open company in a starter allowance; call in wide-open scramble. LEMON PUNCH has been second best as the favorite on turf and dirt since shipping in from the SoCal circuit; versatile filly must overcome far outside post. WILD AWAKE takes the blinkers off after finding some trouble twice as the favorite; best figure came in only non-firm turf start.

Ninth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. May Day Now 2. Persian 3. Pacific Star

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MAY DAY NOW switched back to dirt second time off the claim, ran down N3L sprinters (purse $27k) and was in hand late at Philly Park on Saturday; barn 20% and profitable with quick turnarounds. PERSIAN dropped to $25k off a seven-week absence to win first off the claim with a stalking trip, takes a 50% discount off that career-top figure; may sit another good trip as J T MOORE and MOOSE MAN hook up early for the lead. PACIFIC STAR yet another who is dropping in price off a win, after pairing up his best figures winning on fast and sloppy tracks; has shown improved positional speed lately.

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Friday, Oct. 16

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Friday, Oct. 16

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Friday, Oct. 16
What to Watch for Today: The Queen of the New York turf, Saratoga?s leading trainer Linda Rice, makes her 2009 Keeneland fall meet debut today when she sends out Canadian Ballet in the $100,000 Franklin County Stakes. The filly and mare turf sprint has lured invaders from California, Canada, Maryland, Illinois, Michigan and across Kentucky.

Weather: Cold temps in the low 40s are forecasted with a 30-percent chance of the continued rain that?s plagued Lexington this week. No turf racing was held Wednesday or Thursday, and could be in jeopardy Friday given the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup is Saturday on the lawn and preserving the course for that might be a priority.

Polycapping 101: In this section, we?ll get race and horse specific to help your handicapping.

We open Friday in Race 1 with $10,000 claimers going 1-1/16 miles. No $10,000 claimer on the Polytrack around 2 turns has been won by the half-mile leader (14 races) to date. The average winner comes from more than 4-1/2 lengths back after the opening half-mile, including El Indy (6 lengths back) on opening weekend. Jockey Julien Leparoux has been particularly strong keeping these lower-level horses together over a Poly route, winning 4 of the 14 events held.

As we pointed out last week in a Polycapping coup that netting a huge payoff ($243.40 exacta), jockeys Jamie Theriot and Robby Albarado have been particularly strong at the tricky 6-1/2 furlong sprint distance historically. Theriot rides Brazilionaire and Albarado Run With Eagles in Race 2 this afternoon. Races 5 and 6 also are at the same distance and feature both riders (Theriot on Classic Wager and Albarado aboard Guenewald in the fifth; Theriot on Brother Stuart and Albarado aboard Octavo in the sixth).

Sire Smart Strike has produced an impressive 9 route winners on the Keeneland Polytrack and his 2-year-old Vamos a Ver could be very live in a Race 3 allowance. The only other baby in Race 3 sired by a horse to produce a Keeneland route winner on Poly is Upperline, who is by Maria?s Mon (3 winners all-time).

Don?t expect a big upset in Race 4, where claimers sprint 7 furlongs. Only 4 of 38 claiming races at this distance on Polytrack have been won by horses over 10-1 or more. Nearly half of the winners (18-38) were horses who ran a mile or longer last time and turned back in distance.

First-timers and veterans are on equal footing as you evaluate Race 6 today. Note that the dozen MSW baby races at this distance all-time have been split 6-6 between rookies and experienced horses. Trainer Ken McPeek has excelled at this distance with his babies, winning a record 3 times in this situation and he sends out firster Celeritas Plus. Dallas Stewart (Brother Stuart) has a pair of baby wins at this trip on Polytrack.

Chicago shippers have won 5 of the last 7 fall-meet turf allowances held at Keeneland (including the first 2 this year), so keep that in mind as you analyze Race 7. Exchanging Kisses, Approvedtbythemint and Desert Wheat all invade from the Windy City.

Few $10,000 claimers have been run at 7 furlongs on the Polytrack as we have in Race 10 today, but note that 4 of the 5 winners were forwardly placed on or near the lead, including front-running B.L?s Papa opening weekend.

Feature Race Play: What a way to start the week, nailing the $11.80 winner on Wednesday and then cold-cocking Thursday?s exacta for $25 in the Jessamine Stakes. Good things come in threes, right?

Turf sprinters clash in the Franklin County (Race 9), where history says that you don?t want to be making a surface change. Only 1 of the 12 turf sprint stakes held here since the ?06 fall meet has been won by a horse that didn?t prep on the turf last time out. Four entrants today will try to buck that trend.

Even though favorite Silver Timber won the opening weekend Woodford Stakes, favorites have won just 2 of the last 12 turf sprint stakes at Keeneland, and we?ve seen 4 winners at 12-1 or more during that span. Also note that 10 of the 12 winners raced at 6 furlongs or shorter last time out, and none turned back from a distance greater than 6-1/2 furlongs to win.

Posts 3-8 have accounted for 10 of the 12 winners, and that?s where I?ll look. Dubai Majesty and Canadian Ballet finished in the photo together last time in the Turf Amazon and have plenty of class to go with their speed. I?ll take Dubai Majesty to win and box the exacta.

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 16

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 16

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 16
10/16/2009
1st Race
IT?S A MIRACLE (#5) has won five races this year and has finished in the money 11 straight times. She should be in good position throughout under jockey Robby Albarado and looks best in the opener. SOUTH BEACH LUV (#12) has the outside post but drops in class and owns a win over the Keeneland strip. Her best makes her dangerous. HANDLETHETRUTH (#1) is a contender.

2nd Race
RUN WITH EAGLES (#9) stumbled a bit leaving the gate last out and ducked out sharply in the stretch run. He has trained sharply since coming to Kentucky and could spring the upset with jockey Robby Albarado picking up the mount. SANDECKER (#1) drops in class and gets blinkers for the first time. He is a definite contender in what looks like a very well-matched maiden claimer. FUTURISTIC (#3) was dull last out at Turfway but has been second in five of his eight races and is the one to beat.

3rd Race
VAMOS A VER (#5) is the only runner in here with a win around two turns. He didn?t have the best of trip last out and won despite the rider losing his whip in mid stretch. He will be running at the end and rates the edge for trainer Graham Motion and jockey Jeremy Rose. SUCCESSFUL SCORE (#2) was overmatched in the Futurity (G2) at Belmont Park but ran very well in his three prior races. He is the one to beat. EDDIE SET GO (#6) fits with these.

4th Race
CLEAR CUT (#5) drops in class and trainer Rusty Arnold?s horses have been running very well recently. She broke her maiden over the Keeneland surface last year and appears to be in a good spot to pick up another win today. MY NEW LADY (#11) has never been worse than fourth in eight career races. She is definitely the one to beat. DAY TRIPPI (#9) is a contender.

5th Race
MOYER?S POND (#1) comes off a game win at Turfway. He will be rallying from just off the pace and rates a slight edge in a very well-matched claiming race. CITY NUMBER (#3) had a rough trip last out and is the one to beat with Francisco Torres picking up the mount. DEEP CANYON (#2) has been off since January but is training well and has the class to beat these.

6th Race
OCTAVO (#1) was second to Cradle winner Gleam of Hope in his debut and just missed last out after pressing a fast pace. If he can rate just off the lead he will be tough to beat in this one. ENCHANTED CIRCLE (#3) is a Darley homebred by A.P. Indy. His works aren?t flashy but he should be ready and has to be respected. THOMAS J (#6) is a definite threat.

7th Race
TYBALT (#11) hasn?t raced in over a year but he has run well fresh in the past and trainer Mike Stidham is very good with runners coming off long layoffs. He has trained well for his return and rates the slight edge. VACATION (#2) has had a solid campaign this year and runs well on the turf or the Polytrack. Expect another good performance today. RADICAL SABBATICAL (#1) is a definite threat in another well-matched race.

8th Race
FITZASLEW (#7) had no chance in his last race at Saratoga breaking from the 14 post. He ran a big race in that one to finish fourth and should be ready to win in his third start back after a five-month layoff. A DIEHL (#10) has been off since April but likes this track and is another runner from the hot barn of trainer Rusty Arnold. CALCULATING JIMMY (#9) has been running for a tag but could add value to the gimmicks.

9th Race ? Buffalo Trace Franklin County
DUBAI MAJESTY (#4) showed a new dimension last out when she rallied from off the pace and was narrowly beaten by Canadian Ballet. Similar tactics today could make her a winner for trainer Bret Calhoun and jockey Jamie Theriot. CANADIAN BALLET (#6) is a turf sprint specialist who has finished first or second in six straight races. She is the one to catch. JUST FOR KEEPS (#8) has been dull but is capable of better.

10th Race
JUSTA STREAK (#6) drops in class and moves to the hot barn of trainer Hugh Robertson. His best race should make him a winner at this level. MONSTER DRIVE (#1) also takes the big drop and makes his first start for trainer Steve Asmussen. He is the one to beat. GASCONADE (#5) has a chance.

Bufffalo Trace Franklin County Analysis
10/16/2009
FASTONGRASS closed from offt he pace to win the Beverly J Lewis Stakes at Fairplex on dirt last ime out and has worked well at Santa Anita in the interim; she has won sprinting at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park and this race sets up well for a stalker type with lots of early talent in the gate; note her trainer has a 27% win percentage this year. CANADIAN BALLET is ultra-quick and is certainly the one to catch today; she comes into this off back-to back stakes wins at Saratoga and Philadelphia Park and has been off the board only once at this distance on grass; she's rarely behind after an opening quarter, but expect the equally quick LIBOR LADY to keep her company this time. The latter stole the Klassy Briefcase Stakes at Monmouth and the Satin N Lace at Presque isle this summer after kicking off her win streak here last April on polytrack; she is as honest as they come and usually is primed off a couple month freshenings. DUBAI MAJESTY made up alot of ground on CANADIAN BALLET last time out and makes her first start over the Keeneland lawn; her late rally may be helped a tad if the top picks torch one other on the lead. TALETOBETOLD has the toughest task of all from the 12-hole but is versatile and has faced several of these in the past; she just missed in last year's edition by a diminishing neck; a closing threat again.

Friday?s card features The Buffalo Trace Franklin County. This is a 5 ? furlong race on the grass for fillies and mares that has drawn a very competitive field. Trainer William Calhoun brings over Dubai Majesty. This is about as a consistent filly as one could ever hope for. Her Beyer numbers are impressive with Graded Stakes company. She turned in an excellent performance last out in her first off the layoff. She should be tight off that effort and show up very tough in here. Canadian Bullet beat Dubai Majesty last out in a blanket finish at Philadelphia Park. The Linda Rice charge is another consistent runner that brings a very fast turn of foot and should show the way here. Libor Lady is 6 for 9 at this distance on the grass and draws Albarado to the irons.

Handicapping Picks for 10/16/2009
Race #6 - Rating = 3
#1 Our Partner - Fair odds 7/5
#5 Sartorial - Fair odds 3/1
#2 Kris Silver - Fair odds 3/1

Exactas: 1 with 2,3,5,6 and 2,3,5,6 with 1
#3 is Noblety, #6 is Cavanal

Our Partner gets the ground saving rail for this route, with a strong 9 for 13 1st or 2nd career record to date on grass, including a win here at Santa Anita in March in a similar high level claimer. Ignoring his stakes try on a conventional dirt track last out, he can return to the form shown just before that versus similar at Del Mar when he rallied from 7th of 9 early to win nicely under Rosario, up now again and aboard for all three of his wins this year.

Sartorial missed by a head on the wire versus similar on grass last out following 5 ? months off, 2nd as well prior to the layoff, to Our Partner, so he fits for a piece of the purse at the least today.

Kris Silver finished third in that March race to Our Partner and Sartorial here at Santa Anita and like Sartorial enters the race off a runner-up effort to similar so figures to be tough from start to finish once again.

RACE 6----OUR PARTNER (best bet)
Hollendorfer 5 yo gelding won over this course for 80K last March. Didn?t care for the ?fair circuit? 39 days ago and if you throw that race out, he stands out like a sore thumb. Gets reunited with Rosario who won with him 2 races back and draws the ground saving 1 hole with the rails out 24 feet.
