Betting the Red River Rivalry

The Red River rivalry game has been played between Texas and Oklahoma since 1900 and is one of the great annual grudge matches in college football betting.

The Longhorns have won three of the last four games in Dallas and will be slight favorites to win again in 2009.

At Bodog, we?ll be keeping a close eye on all the news before this game, but none more so than any information regarding the health of Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford.

Bradford returned to action last week against Baylor after sustaining a third-degree sprained shoulder in the Sooners' season-opening loss to BYU. He completed 27 of 49 passes for 389 yards and a touchdown in Oklahoma?s 33-7 victory, and if not for a number of dropped passes, his numbers would have been even better.

"If I had not been told or known that Sam was hurt, watching him play, I wouldn't have thought he's hurt," Texas coach Mack Brown said after watching the game on TV. "He walked out there and threw it just like he did it before he got hurt. He?s back at 100 percent and ready to go."

What else is he supposed to say though? We know that any tidbit of information to the contrary will be acted upon, and quickly, by bettors.

We?re certainly used to monitoring the action while bettors determine how much faith to put in a college quarterback that has injury concerns. The Tim Tebow will-he-or-won?t-he-play watch peaked last week before the Florida Gators suffocated LSU 13-3 at Tiger Stadium.

Florida hosts Arkansas on Saturday in a game that even Tebow admits could trip up the Gators if they?re not prepared.

"Arkansas could definitely beat us,'' said Tebow, "they've got a lot of great players, a great coach. They could definitely beat us.''

Tebow was 11-of-16 passing for 134 yards and a touchdown and one interception against the Tigers, carrying the ball 17 times for 38 yards on the ground.

It?ll be interesting to see if Florida coach Urban Meyer tips his hand during the week on how much he?ll use Tebow against the Razorbacks, particularly if the Gators are leading big at halftime. If Tebow goes out, could a late Arkansas cover follow?

As for the rest of the college football betting action last week, the Purdue- Minnesota game got solid handle as the line opened Purdue +3.5 and early bettors took the dog down to +3. Not surprisingly, that?s when people jumped on the favored Gophers, pushing the line back to 3.5. In retrospect, we would?ve been wise to let bettors pound the dog, seeing as Minnesota won easily, 35-20.

Another line mover was Georgia, which opened +1.5 at Tennessee and closed at -1. Good news for the book, considering the Bulldogs went on to get hammered by the Vols, 45-19.

Game of the day: Oklahoma vs. Texas

Game of the day: Oklahoma vs. Texas

Game of the day: Oklahoma vs. Texas

College football?s marquee kicks off at 12:00 p.m. ET in Dallas when No. 2 Texas (5-0, 2-0) tackles No. 18 Oklahoma (3-2, 1-0) at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

The Longhorns opened a 1-point favorite and have been bet up to -3 with the total at 52 points.

Weather update

Warm temperatures in the mid to upper 60?s, under partly cloudy skies, are expected at kickoff. Northeast winds around 5 mph with a 10 percent chance of rain.

Setting the table

The series dates back to the turn of the 20th century, though the Red River Rivalry officially began in 1929, the first year the game was played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Staged at the Cotton Bowl as part of the Texas State Fair, the showdown splits the seating equally and is one of college football's greatest traditions.

Last year?s 45-35 come-from-behind win by Texas wasn?t enough to earn the Longhorns a spot in the Big 12 championship game, despite finishing in a three-way tie for the top-spot with Oklahoma and Texas Tech in the Big 12 South Division.

A controversy sent the Sooners to the title game. The three-way tie was decided by the BCS standings, with the Sooners holding a slight lead. An eventual win by Oklahoma over Missouri in the championship game sent the Sooners to the BCS title game, leaving the Longhorns anxious to atone for the decision rendered by the Big 12 brass.

Hence, while the revenge is Oklahoma?s, the incentive Texas brings to the game is strong.

Tale of the tape

Led by 2008 Heisman runner-up QB Colt McCoy, the Longhorns lead the nation in scoring averaging 47.2 PPG. They have scored 34 or more points in every game this season, and 30 or more in 19 of their last 20 regular season contests.

In addition the Texas rush defense ranks No. 2 in the land, surrendering 46 RYPG.

McCoy has tossed for 11,142 yards and 95 touchdowns in his career with Texas, good for a passer rating of 149.15.

Injured tailbacks Vondrell McGee and Tre Newton are expected to be game time decisions. The ailments to Texas? top backs could leave the Longhorns to turn to Fozzy Whittaker and Cody Johnson.

The Sooners welcomed QB Sam Bradford back to the lineup last week, after missing time with a shoulder injury. Last year?s Heisman winner lit up the Baylor secondary with 389 passing yards and a TD en route to a 33-7 victory.

Bradford owns 8,326 passing yards and 88 touchdowns, with a 133.87 passer rating, with Oklahoma.

In a disappointing two-loss season (both defeats by one point each), Oklahoma?s strength has been its defense. It ranks No. 8 overall, allowing 256 YPG and No. 2 in scoring, surrendering 8.4 PPG. The Sooners defense is anchored by its stop-unit, allowing 54 YYPG.

Defense could win this matchup, especially since the Longhorns and Sooners rank 1-2 in the Big 12 in that category.

Why Texas wins this game

Incentive from being dissed by Big 12 and BCS officials last season finds this game circled in red ink on Mack Brown?s schedule.

UT?s only loss in its last 19 games was perhaps the most-watched game of the 2008 season, the dramatic last-minute defeat at Texas Tech.

Brown is 71-16 SU and 52-33-2 ATS in his head coaching career against sub-.666 opposition, including 3-0 SU and ATS on neutral fields.

Why Oklahoma wins this game

Urgency tends to bring the best out of good teams and the Sooners are a team that cannot afford another loss if they hope to secure a seventh BCS-bowl berth in the last eight years.

"Everyone makes such a big deal about just this game, but in the end, the objective is to win championships, so that's what matters. If we win this game, but won't win the Big 12 championship game, there isn't anyone patting us on the back,? commented OU coach Bob Stoops, on the importance winning out.

Stoops is 16-3 SU in his career at OU when his team owns a win percentage of less than .666 on the season.

With Bradford back in the lineup he will be anxious to atone for last year?s loss to the Longhorns. If WR Ryan Broyles is able to return from a shoulder injury, he gives Bradford a big target. Broyles was able to practice early this week.

Historically speaking

The higher ranked team has lost only 14 of last 61 games in this series.

OU leads the rivalry 7-6 since the formation of the Big 12 in 1996. Stoops is 6-4 against Brown, winning five straight from 2000 to 2004. Texas has won three of the last four contests.

Brown is 101-18 SU and 64-54-1 ATS as a conference favorite. Stoops is 7-5 SU and 8-4 ATS as a conference dog.

Where the line opened: Texas -3

Where it stands now: Texas -3

What are the Sharps Backing: Over 51

Over/Under Movement: 51 to 53.5

What the book is rooting for: Oklahoma and Under. Seventy percent of side action is on the Longhorns and 80 percent of action on total is behind the over.

Injury Report:

Sooners: LG Brian Simmons (knee) is out, SS Quinton Carter (knee) is questionable and WR Ryan Broyles (shoulder) is probable.

Comments: For the first time since 2005, and for only the second time in the past eight years, Texas is favored over Oklahoma. While Texas hasn't been favored that much recently, it has won three of the last four meetings between the schools, covering every game in the process.

The Sooners welcomed back quarterback Sam Bradford last week in their 33-7 home win against Baylor. Bradford had missed the previous three games because of a shoulder injury. Bradford was 27/49 in completions and threw for one score against Baylor. OU wide receiver Ryan Broyles (seven TDs) is nursing a shoulder injury, but he should be in the starting lineup.

Prop of game: Player to record passing touchdown first: Sam Bradford vs Colt McCoy: McCoy -140

NCAA Rivalry Games

NCAA Rivalry Games

NCAA Rivalry Games

Does any sports do ?rivalry? games better than college football?the Red Sox and Yankees might have a say, and Duke-North Carolina in college hoops?but there is something magical about these big rivalry games in the fall that, to me, anyway, supersede the others.

A prime example is on display this weekend at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, when the 2009 edition of the Red River Rivalry kicks off.

The No. 3 Texas Longhorns take on the No. 20 Oklahoma Sooners this Saturday in what is still a game with National Title implications.

Online sportsbooks have installed the ?Horns as field goal favorites, with the Over/Under set at 51.5.

These two have been at it forever, with Texas boasting 58-40-5 edge overall, and they are 45-36-4 since 1914 when the game venue switched to Dallas.

Betting Trends:

The two are much more evenly matched in the last 13 games however with Texas going 6-7 SU and 7-6 ATS.

In the Longhorns? last eight games when favored by 4-points or less, they are 6-2 SU and 5-2-1 ATS and in their nine with the same range, they have produced 7 Overs and 2 Unders.

Oklahoma has thrived when +4 or less going 8-3 SU and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 in that situation

And here?s another interesting stat:

Since 2000, the winner of the Red River Rivalry game has gone on to participate in the BCS championship game four times (2000, 2003, 2004 and 2005).

And last year, Texas won the rivalry game but Oklahoma went on to play in the BCS title game.

Sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com currently has the Longhorns are listed at +400 to win this year?s national championship.

Another rivalry game this weekend, although certainly not on the historical scale of the Red River, is between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans. After a cooling off period due to the Trojans dominance, this year?s matchup has some real heat around it.

The two meet in South Bend on Saturday and the Trojans are 10-point faves with an Over/Under of 48.5.

While ND leads the all-time series 42-33-5, it is the Trojans who have the edge recently, going 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings between the two.

In the last 11 games as an underdog of 8-points or more, the Irish have not been lucky at all going 1-10 SU and 3-8 ATS.

But this year, the anticipation on campus in South Bend is off the charts, as Jimmy Clausen and the Irish have a legitimate shot at the upset win.

Should be a great weekend of college betting action.

GAME NOTES: One of the nation's oldest and most recognized rivalries is set for this weekend, as the 20th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners and third-ranked Texas Longhorns meet in the Cotton Bowl in the 104th edition of what is tabbed the Red River Rivalry.

The atmosphere, which is like no other game in college football, is something that OU's Bob Stoops tries to put in perspective.

"What gets you most is probably the importance of the game in our league and having a step towards the Big 12 Championship and that sort of thing. The rest of that we don't participate in, we see a bunch of people yelling at us on the busses as we pull in but after that you're on the field and we don't pay much attention to it."

The Sooners are usually in the hunt for not only the Big 12 title, but a national title as well, but find themselves on the outside of the national championship picture, having lost two of their first five games. However, both losses came with their Heisman Trophy winning quarterback on the bench due to injury. Sam Bradford returned to the field last week and looked sharp in leading Oklahoma to a 33-7 pasting of Baylor in the conference-opener for OU.

Mack Brown's Longhorns also have their eyes on a conference crown, but are still very much in the hunt for much more. Texas has jumped out to a 5-0 start to its season, including moving to 2-0 in league play with last week's 38-14 win over Colorado.

These two teams first met in 1900 and Texas is the only member of the Big 12 with a winning record against Oklahoma, holding a 58-40-5 all-time advantage. OU however holds a 7-6 edge since the Big 12 was formed in 1996. This marks the 81st straight year that this game has taken place in Dallas.

Sam Bradford was knocked out of the first game of the season with a shoulder injury and missed three and a half games in all. However, he looked fine in his return last week, throwing for 389 yards and one TD, without an interception against Baylor. With his effort, Bradford tied a school-record for most 300-yard passing games, with 14. With standout WR Ryan Broyles (23 catches, 346 yards, seven TDs) out of the lineup (shoulder blade), Brandon Caleb took over as the go-to-guy downfield and hauled in seven balls, for 139 yards. There is a chance Broyles could return this week, and that would certainly help Bradford and the passing game.

Stoops knows what it means to have Bradford back.

"No slight on Landry (Jones), but in any game, how can he not make a difference? Last year he was the best player in college football, how can he not? Sure he does, absolutely he does. In the end, we're not talking about just any old guy. He's been pretty special over and over."

On the year, the Sooners are still putting up impressive offensive numbers, despite the overall record, chewing up 457.0 ypg, with a solid mix of the run (187.8) and the pass (269.2).

The ground game has a pair of outstanding ball carriers in DeMarco Murray (5.3 ypc, three TDs) and Chris Brown (4.7 ypc, three TDs) and both have the talent to take over a game.

The overall numbers on the defensive side of the ball are equally impressive for Oklahoma, with the team allowing just 8.4 ppg (third nationally), on 256.0 ypg (ninth nationally). The rush defense has been particularly stingy at 53.6 ypg (third nationally).

Playmakers abound on the OU defense, but the strength is in the linebacking corps, with standouts Travis Lewis (team-high 46 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, one sack), Ryan Reynolds (39 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, three sacks, one INT) and Keenan Clayton (23 tackles, one sack, two INTs). Safeties Quinton Carter (32 tackles, one INT) and Sam Proctor (25 tackles) and cornerback Brian Jackson (22 tackles, three INTs) highlight the play in the secondary, while rush end Jeremy Beal (9.5 TFLs, 6.5 sacks) and tackle Gerald McCoy (7.5 TFLs, 2.0 sacks) anchor things up front.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy returned to Austin this year to lead his team to a national title, and perhaps pick up a Heisman along the way. He hasn't hampered the chances of either goal being reached with his play thus far. McCoy has completed over 73 percent of his passes on the year, for 1,410 yards and 10 TDs. It doesn't hurt to have a stud on the outside in All-American candidate Jordan Shipley. The 6-0 senior has hauled in 47 balls in the first five games, for 583 yards and three TDs.

The passing game, which is generating a hefty 304.6 yards per game, sets up the running attack, which is churning out a healthy 175.0 ypg. Both Vondrell McGee (5.7 ypc) and Tre' Newton (5.0 ypg) have the ability to move the chains and keep drives alive.

The result is the seventh ranked team in terms of total offense (479.6 ypg) and the top scoring team in the land (47.2 ppg).

The Texas defense has also been formidable this season, allowing just 233.0 yards per game overall (fourth nationally). Those numbers are certainly aided by the nation's stingiest rush defense (46.2 ypg).

This is a unit with several veteran leaders, starting with senior linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy. The 6-2, 235-pounder leads Texas in total tackles (38), with six TFLs and two sacks. Up front, the team looks to ends Sergio Kindle (19 tackles, 4.0 TFLs, two sacks) and Sam Acho (18 tackles, 7.0 TFLs, 5.0 sacks) to get pressure on the quarterback. The secondary is deep and talented, headlined by DBs Curtis Brown (23 tackles), Aaron Williams (22 tackles, two forced fumbles) and Earl Thomas (20 tackles, four INTs.

This is always a brawl and nothing should change this time around. With two of the nation's premier defenses on display, anything can happen, a notion shared by Mack Brown.

"We have the two best defenses in the country. It will be really fun to watch the two defenses play because they play well every week."

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas 27, Oklahoma 23
