Preview: Yankees (103-59) at Angels (97-65)

Game: 3
Venue: Yankee Stadium
Date: October 19, 2009 4:13 PM EDT

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Torii Hunter grabbed his hat, tied his spikes and headed out of Los Angeles' home clubhouse into the abundant sunshine and cool breezes of Angel Stadium.

``Now I can work on my tan again,' the Angels' unofficial captain said with a grin Sunday.

His Angels are undeniably in trouble after two nights of horrible weather and messier baseball in New York, where the Yankees took a 2-0 lead over their error-prone opponents in the AL championship series.

Yet the Angels say they're far from finished going into Game 3 Monday, insisting they can warm back up with the fundamentally sound play that got them here after a difficult season.

``We've got to calm it down and have some fun,' Hunter said. ``You've got to have amnesia, and you've got to let the past go. ... (Against the Yankees) you can try to play too much. You can let that history get in your mind, and their payroll, and you really try to do too much. We have to block that out and play our game.'

If the Angels don't quickly reclaim that California cool, the Yankees could be headed to the World Series by Tuesday night.

On an afternoon expected to feature near-perfect baseball weather, New York's Andy Pettitte will attempt to win his major league-record 16th postseason game against Jered Weaver, specifically chosen for this start by Angels manager Mike Scioscia because of the southern California native's prowess at home.

``We know this thing can turn in a heartbeat,' Scioscia said. ``If we win Game 3, we've got a different vibe in this series, and that's what you want to create.'

The teams definitely earned a relaxing day in the Orange County sun after their 13-inning, 310-minute epic on Saturday night, won 4-3 by the Yankees on the final defensive mistake in a two-game set full of miscues by the normally sure-handed Angels.

New York canceled its scheduled Sunday workout in Anaheim, while the Angels gathered for a bit of hitting and jogging, more to reset their minds than their bodies after a weekend of temperatures in the 40s amid blowing rain.

``I think we did a pretty good job at our ballpark in those conditions,' Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon said. ``The conditions (in Anaheim) are definitely going to be a little bit more favorable for both teams to actually try to perform a bit better. The bones won't be aching as much, and the body will be able to move around a bit quicker.'

Second baseman Maicer Izturis' wild throw on an attempt to turn a double play on a tough grounder allowed Jerry Hairston Jr. to score the winning run and left the Angels in an 0-2 playoff hole - a jam they've never escaped in their postseason history.

Although the overeager Izturis - a defensive whiz during the season - took the most heat, he was hardly the Angels' only goat in Game 2.

Closer Brian Fuentes has made just one tangible mistake in the postseason, but Alex Rodriguez stuck that high fastball into the right field stands for a tying homer in the 11th. When Hunter saw the pitch called for A-Rod from his perch in center field, the thought of calling a timeout briefly flashed through his mind.

``I saw the (signal for) fastball, I saw (catcher Jeff Mathis') glove go up, and I was like, 'Nooooooo!'' Hunter said. ``That's why he's one of the best hitters in the game, though.'

Hunter also wasted a chance to increase the Angels' 11th-inning lead with an inning-ending, double-play grounder after Chone Figgins' go-ahead RBI.

Then there's Vladimir Guerrero, the Angels' formerly feared cleanup hitter, who struck out twice with the bases loaded in New York and stranded eight runners in Game 2. The slugger wears a blue Superman T-shirt while lounging in the Angels' clubhouse before most games, but it appears to be fading - and so do his once-superhuman skills.

Despite his clutch hit to finish off Boston in the division series, Guerrero's statistics and timely hits have declined considerably in the final year of his contract with Los Angeles. Yet Scioscia defiantly keeps Guerrero in the cleanup spot ahead of Kendry Morales or Juan Rivera despite a soft 6-for-21 playoff performance that includes only two RBIs - both on that go-ahead hit against the Red Sox.

``I have confidence in Vlad,' Hunter said. ``If it weren't for Vlad, we probably wouldn't be where we are. Just his name and his history alone helps us, making pitchers think about the game differently.'

And though the fielding miscues were the Angels' most glaring shortcomings in the Bronx, their dismal hitting hurt them even more. The Angels batted .154 and had just 12 hits in the first two games' 22 innings, including just four extra-base hits - all doubles - for a measly .205 slugging percentage.

Los Angeles didn't rely on homers during its tremendously productive regular season, instead creating runs through multiple-hit rallies and heads-up baserunning, but a couple of shots could ease the burden of having to grind out runs to match New York's lineup of big boppers.

The Yankees' rotation isn't deep, but it's been dominant. Their three starting pitchers have a 1.62 ERA over the first five postseason games, and Game 3 starter Andy Pettitte allowed just one run while tying John Smoltz for the major league record with his 15th postseason victory in the division series clincher against Minnesota.

Yanks in command

Yanks in command

Yanks in command
October 19, 2009

The powerful New York Yankees are in full command as they play at the Los Angeles Angels Monday

Los Angeles, trailing 2-0 in games, is a -134 home favorite with the first pitch coming at 4 pm ET. The Over/Under is 8.5 runs.

The Angels find themselves in this uncomfortable position after playing two difficult and freezing games in the Bronx. The Yanks got a 4-1 victory in Game 1 as ace CC Sabathia out-pitched John Lackey.

Game 2 was a lot more dramatic. The game was tied 2-2 into the 11th inning until the Angels took a one-run lead. Former playoff goat, Alex Rodriguez hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the inning and New York won in the 13th after another costly Angels? error.

New York (5-0) is now unbeaten in the playoffs and Los Angels would have to beat them four out of five games to win the series.

That seems unlikely, but bettors are most interested in what happens today. It?s certainly a winnable game for the Angels who were 4-2 at home against New York this season.

Andy Pettitte (New York) vs. Jered Weaver (Los Angeles)

Pettitte (14-8, 4.16 ERA) was the choice for Game 3 on the road as the 37 year-old doesn?t get rattled in any situation. He actually had better numbers away from Yankee Stadium this year at 8-4 with a 3.71 ERA.

Some good news for Angels? fans is that Pettitte is 0-2 with a 7.88 ERA in three starts against them this year. Two of those starts were in Anaheim (0-2, 7.84 ERA). However, Pettitte can always come up with a quality start as his 15-9 playoff record suggests.

Weaver was 16-8 with a 3.75 ERA this year. Unlike Pettitte, his splits show a much better performance at home which is why he was skipped the first two games. Weaver was 9-3 with a 2.90 ERA in Anaheim this year. His road ERA (4.78) was almost a full two runs higher.

Weaver pitched amazing in his home start against Boston in the ALDS. However, he had a 5.59 ERA in three starts against New York this year. It?s important he pitches well early to get his confidence up against this potent lineup.

Otherwise, the Angels could find themselves down 0-3 and the Yanks can start selling their World Series tickets.

Can the Angels make this a real series with a win?

Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees) vs. Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels)

Andy Pettitte (14-8, 4.16 ERA)

There?s never been a pitcher with more postseason experience than this guy. The 37-year-old became the majors' all-time leader in playoff innings pitched and tied John Smoltz for most career postseason wins following his masterful start against the Twins in the ALDS last week.

Pettitte is 15-8 in his 36 playoff starts.

The veteran lefty struck out seven and allowed just one run in 6 1/3 innings pitched versus the Twins.

Pettitte didn?t look anything like the pitcher who was pulled in the fifth inning in his last regular season start. The under is now 4-0 in Pettitte's last four starts.

Jered Weaver (16-8, 3.63)

Weaver was making spitballs in high school English class when Pettitte pitched his first postseason game. And while Weaver is a decade younger than Pettitte, he?s no wide-eyed puppy when it comes to pitching in pressure-packed situations.

He owns a 2-1 record with a 1.88 ERA in postseason in 14 1/3 innings. The Halos have been money in the bank with Weaver on the bump this season. Dating back to May 22, Los Angeles is 18-8 when he takes the ball.

The under is paying out well with this hurler too at 6-0-2 in Weaver?s last eight starts. That includes last week?s 4-1 win over the Red Sox in the ALDS.

Monday?s best MLB bet

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels (-131, 8.5)

There?s no way a team can lose like Los Angeles did Saturday night and not feel dejected. The Halos wrestled a late one-run lead in extra innings but couldn?t hold on. The Yanks are now up 2-0 in the series and hold all the momentum.

Angels outfielder Torii Hunter couldn?t hold back his frustration after the game, especially seeing how his side stranded 16 and went 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position.

?Deflating,? Hunter told reporters. ?That?s very uncharacteristic of this team. That is not our baseball. We?re not playing up to our capabilities right now.?

Vladimir Guerrero is absolutely killing the Angels. His bat used to be the only threat in the lineup, but now he?s just a strikeout waiting to happen.

Los Angeles prides itself on being patient at the plate, but all that work is ruined as soon as Guerrero comes to the dish with no intention of taking one pitch. His shortcomings were an eyesore in Game 2, striking out twice with the bases loaded.

Expect the Yanks to win this game on their way to a tidy four-game sweep.

Pick: Yankees

New York Yankees (5-0) at LA Angels of Anaheim (3-2), 4:13 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Andy Pettitte (1-0, 1.42) LA Angels - Jered Weaver (1-0, 1.23)

Andy Pettitte tries to become the winningest pitcher in postseason history this afternoon, when the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continue the American League Championship Series with Game 3 at Angel Stadium.

New York holds a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven set after a thrilling win on Saturday. Jerry Hairston Jr. scored on Maicer Izturis' throwing error in the bottom of the 13th, giving the Yankees a 4-3 win .

Saturday's matchup could have gone either way, as each team had a number of scoring opportunities in the late innings and left numerous runners on base. The Angels stranded 16 men, while the Yankees left 12 on the basepaths. But in a wet, cold marathon game that lasted over five hours, New York came out on top.

Ervin Santana (0-1), who escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 12th, was on the mound for the Angels to begin the 13th. Hairston came up as a pinch-hitter and roped a single into left-center, then moved to second on Brett Gardner's sacrifice bunt.

Santana then intentionally walked Robinson Cano to get to Melky Cabrera, who hit a grounder to second. Izturis ranged to his left and had a chance to go for the routine out at first. However, he somewhat inexplicably chose to try for a force out at second, but sailed the throw well wide of the bag as Hairston raced home to score the game-winning run for a Yankees team that is well used to thrilling wins.

"I think [Izturis] was trying to make a little too much of that play," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "You're not going to turn two. If we get an out on any base we're in good shape. It's a way out of the inning."

New York recorded 15 walk-off victories during the regular season, and had another one in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Twins. In that contest, Alex Rodriguez hit a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth inning before Mark Teixeira's homer won it in the 11th.

Rodriguez provided a similar moment Saturday, as he smacked an opposite-field solo homer in the bottom of the 11th to even the contest at 3-3. Chone Figgins' RBI single in the top half had put the Angels in front.

Rodriguez, who is 7-for-19 with three home runs and eight RBI this postseason, is the third player in postseason history to hit a game-tying extra-inning homer, joining Houston's Billy Hatcher (1986 NLCS, Game 6) and Cleveland's Albert Belle (1995 ALDS, Game 1). And he's the fourth player with two or more game-tying or go-ahead homers in the ninth inning or later in one postseason, joining Boston's David Ortiz (2004) and Dave Henderson (1986), and the Dodgers' Kirk Gibson (1988).

David Robertson (2-0) got the win for throwing 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings and Derek Jeter also homered for the Yankees, who took the victory despite committing three errors. They took advantage of three Angels' miscues to win Game 1 of this ALCS on Friday. Los Angeles committed two more Saturday in tumbling to the loss.

"We're fortunate to come out on top in this game, because it was a great game. And there were some miscues," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Fortunately we were on the right side of it."

There was a question as to whether Saturday's contest would even be played, as rain was in the forecast and the game-time temperature was in the 40's. But with winds whipping, the teams got underway with A.J. Burnett on the mound for the Yankees and Joe Saunders going for the Angels.

Now the series shifts to sunny Anaheim, where the Yankees will have Pettitte on the hill after a tremendous ALDS start in which he tied John Smoltz for the major league record with his 15th postseason win.

"I feel fortunate to have been able to have played as long as I have and obviously, to be able to have played on as many great teams as I've been able to play on and have the opportunity to do that," Pettitte said of his record.

Pettitte held the Twins to a run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings in Game 3 of the ALDS.

The 37-year-old lefty, who was 14-8 during the year, lost to the Angels the last time he faced them and is 12-10 with a 4.70 ERA lifetime against them.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, will rely on the right arm of Jered Weaver, who was also magnificent in his ALDS start. Weaver started the second game of that series against the Boston Red Sox and allowed just one run and two hits in 7 1/3 innings.

That start followed up a terrific regular season for Weaver, who finished the year 16-8 with a 3.75 ERA.

You try to treat the game just like any other game," he said. "It would have been nice to get one of the two in New York. But you know, we are where we are. We're not going to quit. We're never a team that's going to give up, despite the numbers or what anybody else says. We're going to go out there and battle."

Weaver, who was 9-3 at home this season, is 4-2 with a 5.88 ERA in seven starts against the Yanks.

The Angels have beaten the Yankees in both of their postseason meetings. Los Angeles got the best of New York in 2002 on its way to a World Series championship, then beat the Yankees again in five games in the 2005 ALDS.

In fact, since 1995, the Angels have been the only AL team to give the Yankees a losing record (68-80, .459).

The Angels split their 10 games with the Yankees in the regular season, but New York won three of the last four meetings. New York, though, won only two of its six games in Anaheim this season and has won there in just three of its last 12 visits.

Pick: Yankees

love the pick bro. im with it. i was taking a look and yes pettite is 0-2 against the halos and once was against weaver. But i also looked at the line the last time....the last time they were matched up yanks were favs and halos underdog. The lines flip flopped this time around. Lets go yanks! lol im a homer yesssss everyone hates but oh welllllllll:toast:

The PICK is not mine, it is write up.

The Halos have to get one for the series to be interesting, and THE WEAVE is awesome at the BIG A. And I am a YANK HATER ! Have been for as long as I can Remember, but I like Jeter, as long as he is sitting on the bench :00hour AJ Burnett needs a beat down, he just looks like a dick.

I think The Halos grab this one, the Rally Monkey Prevails, I hate that stupid chimp !
