Preview: Yankees (103-59) at Angels (97-65)
Date: October 20, 2009 7:57 PM EDT

The New York Yankees were a few innings from being on the brink of their first World Series appearance since 2003. Instead, they're suddenly locked in a hotly-contested series.

With ace CC Sabathia on the mound, New York looks to regain control of the best-of-seven American League championship series Tuesday in Anaheim, where it faces the Los Angeles Angels in Game 4.

Solo homers by Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon gave the Yankees a 3-0 fifth-inning lead in Monday afternoon's Game 3, but Los Angeles clawed back to win 5-4 in 11 innings and trim New York's series advantage to 2-1.

Backup catcher Jeff Mathis' two-out, game-winning double off Alfredo Aceves scored Howie Kendrick and gave the Angels new life after they dropped the first two games of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium, including a crushing 4-3 loss in 13 innings Saturday.

"Obviously, it's the biggest hit of my life,' Mathis said. "For Howie to have the at-bat he did right there, and to get on base and put one in the gap to win the game, it's a pretty good feeling.'

While the Angels snapped their six-game ALCS losing streak, New York suffered its first defeat of this postseason after sweeping Minnesota in three games in a division series.

"This is the type of series we expected it to be,' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We didn't really stretch out any of our pitchers too far today out of the bullpen, so I believe our guys will be fine (Tuesday).'

Girardi will give the ball to Sabathia in Game 4, with his workhorse pitching on three days' rest. The left-hander threw 113 pitches in Friday's 4-1 Game 1 victory, allowing one run and four hits over eight innings, but his manager won't hesitate to let him go just as long again.

"We'll just watch carefully like we would any other start, and make sure that location is there and physically he feels fine and doesn't have any real long innings," Girardi said. "As far as the pitch count, I would have no problem letting him go 110, 115 if that's what it took."

Sabathia, who is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in two starts this postseason, said the only change he makes in his routine when working on shortened rest is bypassing his bullpen session.

"This late in the season, you know, you tend to cut down on bullpens anyways," he said. "So, anyway, it doesn't really make a difference."

Sabathia is 6-7 with a 4.42 ERA in 15 career starts against the Angels.

Los Angeles will look to even the series with left-hander Scott Kazmir on the mound.

Kazmir makes his first start since Oct. 11, Game 3 of the Angels' division series against Boston. He yielded five runs and five hits over six innings, but did not receive a decision in the 7-6 win - his Angels playoff debut.

He went 1-1 with a 4.21 ERA in Tampa Bay's run to the World Series in 2008.

Acquired from the Rays on Aug. 28, Kazmir went 2-2 with a 1.73 ERA in six regular-season starts for Los Angeles.

He is 6-5 with a 2.66 ERA in 14 career starts against the Yankees, including a 3-2 loss Sept. 23, when he yielded three runs in six innings.

Rodriguez was used as a pinch-hitter in that matchup, but he'll be in the starting lineup Tuesday looking to continue his power surge. Rodriguez, who has four home runs and a career-best nine RBIs this postseason, had seven and 17 in 39 career playoff games prior to this October.

He is 3 for 24 with no home runs lifetime versus Kazmir, but the Angels southpaw won't be taking him lightly.

"Anyone that's seeing the ball as good as (Rodriguez) is, it's tough," Kazmir said. "You know, you can just tell when hitters are comfortable out there. When they start hitting the ball hard to opposite field, they're really seeing the ball good and really feeling comfortable out there."

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, meanwhile, has not looked comfortable at the plate after tying for the AL lead with 39 homers and driving in a league-best 122 runs during the regular season. Teixeira went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts Monday, dropping his postseason batting average to .120.

Teixeira, however, is 7 for 11 with four doubles in his career against Kazmir.

After going 1 for 7 and leaving eight runners on base in Saturday's loss, Angels designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero went 2 for 4 on Monday, including a game-tying, two-run homer in the sixth.

Jorge Posada's game-tying solo shot in the eighth Monday was his second of this postseason, tying a playoff career high. Posada last had two homers in the postseason in 2001, when the Yankees lost the World Series to Florida in seven games.

Kendrick was a double shy of the cycle Monday, and is 4 for 10 in three home playoff games this postseason.

Game 5 is Thursday night at Angel Stadium.

Tuesday's best mound matchup

CC Sabathia (New York Yankees) vs. Scott Kazmir (Los Angeles Angels)

CC Sabathia (19-8, 3.37 ERA)

Sabathia has been nearly untouchable in his first two postseason starts of 2009. The burly left-hander is posting a 2-0 record and 1.23 ERA, with his most recent trip to the mound lasting eight innings in which Sabathia allowed just one run on four hits while striking out seven batters in Game 1 of the ALCS.

That improved his postseason totals to 4-3 with a 5.45 ERA in seven career playoff starts. He has a postseason strikeout-to-walk count of 39-to-23 and has lasted an average of just over five innings per postseason start.

That Game 1 victory was his first win over the Angels this season. In the regular season, Sabathia was 0-2 with a bloated 6.08 ERA including a rough outing at Angels Stadium in the middle of July. He was hit for five earned runs on nine hits while walking three batters in just under seven innings of work. Sabathia has a 12-6 record and 3.53 ERA on the road this season.

Scott Kazmir (10-9, 4.89 ERA)

Kazmir was roughed up by a familiar foe, the Boston Red Sox, in his first start of the playoffs. He allowed six runs on five hits while walking three batters in six innings of Game 3 of the ALDS. However, the Angels bailed the left-hander out with a dramatic comeback to sweep the Red Sox and hand Kazmir a no-decision.

With that blunder, Kazmir?s postseason totals took a hit. He is 1-1 in six career playoff starts and watched his postseason ERA climb to 4.83. As a member of the Tampa Bay Rays, Kazmir faced the Yankees eight times before making the move to Los Angeles, where he has played New York once as a member of the Angels. He has a career 3-3 record and slim 2.42 ERA and has held New York to a .214 batting average in those nine starts.

His most recent outing versus New York was a six-inning, three-hit, three-run outing at Angels Stadium which the Halos dropped 3-2. As a home starter, Kazmir is 5-4 with an ERA just south of 6.00 going back to his time in Tampa Bay. In Los Angeles, he has yet to record a win after going 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three home starts.

Illum,

Any stats on Sab w/ 3 days rest?

If I may..........Sabathia has not pitched on three days' rest this season but did it in his final four starts last year with Milwaukee. In four career regular season starts made on three days rest, Sabathia is 3-1 with a 1.01 ERA. He was 2-1 with a 0.83 ERA to close the regular season before getting ripped for five runs in 3 2-3 innings to lose his lone playoff start.

He was worked heavily last year as compared to this year. He has pitched 14 innings so far in Post season, era 1.23
15 K's, 1 Walk, and NO Home runs.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - CC Sabathia (2-0, 1.23) LA Angels - Scott Kazmir (0-0, 7.50)

CC Sabathia takes the hill on three days' rest this evening, when the New York Yankees try to get back on track in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium.

Since the inception of the Wild Card in 1995, starting pitchers have worked on short rest -- three days or less -- 85 times in the postseason and are a combined 20-34 with a 4.65 earned run average.

Sabathia pitched on three days rest in last year's NLDS for Milwaukee, but was rocked by Philadelphia for five runs in just 3 2/3 innings. That outing, though, followed up three September starts he made on short rest that saw him go 2-1 with an 0.83 ERA.

"I don't think it's that big of a deal going [on] three days' rest," Sabathia said. "Everybody made such a big deal of it last year. But if you're healthy enough during the year, I think anybody is able to do it."

Entering this season Sabathia had pitched to a 7.92 ERA in the playoffs, but he has been tremendous for the Yankees this year, going 2-0 while allowing just two runs in 14 2/3 innings (1.23 ERA).

"The thing about CC is he didn't have the amount of innings that he had the last two years in the regular season," manager Joe Girardi said. "We slowed him down. He's been able to have extra rest, and that's why we feel good about it. We wouldn't ask him to do something that we didn't think he was capable of or that he had [no] chance to be successful at."

The big lefty, who hasn't lost since July 28, was brilliant against the Angels in Game 1 of this series on Friday, as he surrendered a run and four hits in eight innings. He also struck out seven and walked a batter.

However, Sabathia lost both of his regular-season starts to the Angels and is 5-7 lifetime against them with a 4.72 ERA in 14 games.

New York is going to need a big start from Sabathia tonight after relying heavily on its bullpen the last two games. After winning a 13-inning contest on Saturday, the Yankees blew an early three-run lead and found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-4, 11-inning decision on Monday.

Jeff Mathis' line drive in the gap in left-center scored Howie Kendrick with the game-winning run as the Angels cut New York's series lead to 2-1 in this best-of-seven set. Kendrick finished 3-for-5 with a solo homer and a triple.

"Obviously it's the biggest hit of my life," Mathis said. "I mean, to come through and for Howie to have the at-bat he did right there and get on base and put one in the gap and score to win the game, it's a pretty good feeling."

The Yankees, who lost for the first time this postseason, had been 30-0 in ALCS games when leading by three-plus runs.

After Ervin Santana (1-1) hurled a perfect top of the 11th, New York's David Robertson recorded two quick outs in the bottom half before Yankees manager Joe Girardi opted for reliever Alfredo Aceves (0-1).

"It's just different kind of stuff against those hitters," Girardi said in his brief postgame explanation. "And we have all the matchups and all the scouting reports and we felt that, you know, it was a better matchup for us."

Kendrick greeted Aceves with a seeing-eye single up the middle and Mathis followed by driving a high fastball to left-center that was just out of the reach of Jerry Hairston Jr., with Kendrick coming in to score without a play at the plate to end the four-hour, 21-minute affair.

The Yankees scored all of their runs off solo blasts by Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon and Jorge Posada. Melky Cabrera and Nick Swisher, though, combined to go 0-for-9 and left 12 men on base.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, continued his amazing postseason, as he is hitting .348 with four home runs and nine RBI in this year's playoffs . He has also drove in a run in seven straight postseason games, one shy of the Major League record held by Ryan Howard, who is in the midst of the streak now, and Lou Gehrig.

Hoping to slow Rodriguez down tonight will be left-hander Scott Kazmir, who will try for a better effort tonight than his ALDS outing. Kazmir did not get a decision in the Game 3 win over Boston, but allowed five runs and five hits in six innings.

"I'm going to have to be very good facing Sabathia, because he's not going to give up much," Kazmir said. "You have to match him every inning. That's what I'm looking forward to doing."

Despite winning just two of his six regular-season starts with the Angels, Kazmir pitched to a 1.73 ERA after being acquired from Tampa Bay in late August.

One of his two losses with the Angels, though, came at the hands of the Yankees, who beat him on September 23. He is 6-5 with a 2.67 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) against them.

"I'm excited," Kazmir said. "Very excited. I'm up for the challenge. I don't put any extra pressure on myself. I just go out there and pitch my game. With this team, the Yankees, they're a very high-powered offense, so you just have to attack the strike zone. I'm not going to try to do anything extra, just pitch my game."

The Angels have beaten the Yankees in both of their postseason meetings. Los Angeles got the best of New York in 2002 on its way to a World Series championship, then beat the Yankees again in five games in the 2005 ALDS.

In fact, since 1995, the Angels have been the only AL team to give the Yankees a losing record (68-80, .459).

The Angels split their 10 games with the Yankees in the regular season, but New York won three of the last four meetings. New York, though, won only two of its six games in Anaheim this season and has won there in just three of its last 12 visits.
