Preview: Wizards (2-1) at Cavaliers (2-2)

Date: November 03, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

The Washington Wizards are still unable to play their three All-Stars on the floor at the same time, but they'll happily settle for having Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler available against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Cleveland, meanwhile, seems to be back at full strength.

The Wizards hope Butler will be back from a one-game absence Tuesday night at Quicken Loans Arena, where the Cavaliers look for a third straight win after being boosted by Delonte West's season debut their last time out.

Washington (2-1) thought it was on the verge of being an annual contender in the Eastern Conference after losing a hard-fought six-game series to the Cavaliers (2-2) in the first round of the 2006 NBA playoffs. Instead, injuries to Butler and Arenas hampered the Wizards the next two seasons, which both ended with opening-round exits against Cleveland.

Arenas has averaged 28.0 points in his first three games after missing all but two games of the 2008-09 season due to knee injuries, but this time the team's other two All-Stars have been hurt. Antawn Jamison won't play for at least two more weeks after suffering a shoulder injury while trying to contest a shot from Cleveland's Zydrunas Ilgauskas in the preseason, and Butler missed Saturday's home opener against New Jersey with a bruised left knee suffered Friday.

Thanks to Arenas and Andray Blatche, Butler and Jamison weren't missed. Arenas scored 32 points and Blatche added a career-high 30 on 15 of 18 shooting in a 123-104 rout of the Nets.

"We've been waiting for this for four or five years now,' Arenas said of the fifth-year big man, who scored 10.0 points per game last season but has averaged 21.0 through three games. "He finally decided this year was the year. He put in the work and it's showing.'

Blatche might not have to step up as much Tuesday if Butler can return, and after an X-ray and an MRI were performed on the knee injured in Friday's loss to Atlanta, coach Flip Saunders says there's a "pretty good chance' Butler will be back.

The Cavaliers began the season 0-2, looking out of sync on both ends of the floor in losses to Boston and Toronto while trying to adjust to new additions Shaquille O'Neal, Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon.

They looked better in a 104-87 win at Minnesota on Friday, and West made an impact Saturday. The troubled guard's return ended more than a month of drama that included personal problems, legal issues, and an unexcused absence, and he scored 13 points in 24 minutes off the bench in Cleveland's 90-79 victory over Charlotte.

"I've said it before that Delonte is one of those guys that doesn't need to do anything," said LeBron James, who was held to 14 points in 37 minutes. "He can sit out for two weeks and he comes back in and he's right in the flow. I've said it before, he is just that type of guy."

West's return also coincided with the best game of Mo Williams' first week. Limited to 16.0 points per game on 35.1 percent shooting in Cleveland's first three games, Williams was 9 of 14 and scored 24 on Saturday.

The Wizards split four meetings with the Cavaliers last season, with each team protecting home court twice. Arenas had 11 points and 10 assists in a 109-101 win at the Verizon Center on April 2, one of the two games he played.

James has averaged 28.4 points in leading the Cavaliers to 10 wins in their last 11 home games against Washington, including the postseason.

Washington Wizards (2-1) at Cleveland Cavaliers (2-2), 7 p.m.

Washington Wizards (2-1) at Cleveland Cavaliers (2-2), 7 p.m.

The Cleveland Cavaliers hope the ship has been righted after a disappointing start to the season, as they resume a three-game homestand tonight versus the Washington Wizards at Quicken Loans Arena.

Favored to represent the East in the NBA Finals this year, the Cavs dropped their first two contests of the 2009-10 campaign before rebounding with consecutive triumphs, including Saturday's 90-79 victory versus the Charlotte Bobcats in the opener of the homestand. Mo Williams knocked down 5-of-8 shots from three-point range and collected 24 points to lead the Cavs, who welcomed the return of guard Delonte West.

West had been dealing with personal and legal issues from the summer, and posted 13 points in his 2009-10 debut. Superstar LeBron James added 14 points, seven rebounds and nine assists for Cleveland.

"He sits out for two weeks and he's right back in the flow," said James. "He's that type of guy. It wasn't a surprise he was able to come out tonight and still be in the comfort zone."

The Cavs are 1-1 at home and will also host the Chicago Bulls. Last season, they won their first 23 home games on the way to a 39-2 mark at Quicken Loans Arena. The team also won the Central Division title before losing in six games to the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Washington has won two of its first three games of the season and notched a 123-104 triumph Saturday versus the New Jersey Nets at the Verizon Center.

Gilbert Arenas finished with 32 points and seven assists, while Andray Blatche recorded a career-high 30 points off the bench for the Wizards, who split a pair of road contests to begin the 2009-10 campaign. Randy Foye added 17 points and eight assists in a winning cause.

"He's worked hard in the offseason," Wizards new head coach Flip Saunders said of Blatche. "He's worked hard as far as even during the season here, so he's reaping the rewards of his hard work."

Wizards forward Caron Butler is probable for Tuesday's game with a bruised left knee. Butler did not play in the win over New Jersey.

Washington and Cleveland split a four-game season series a year ago, with each team winning on its home floor. The Wizards have lost five in a row and six of their last seven as the visitor in this series.

Preview: Nuggets (3-0) at Pacers (0-2)

Preview: Nuggets (3-0) at Pacers (0-2)

Preview: Nuggets (3-0) at Pacers (0-2)

Date: November 03, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

Thanks to Carmelo Anthony's red-hot play, the Denver Nuggets are off to their best start in 24 years.

Anthony and the Nuggets look to continue their run by keeping the host Indiana Pacers winless on Tuesday night.

With Anthony averaging 37.7 points on 53.6 percent shooting, Denver is 3-0 for the first time since 1985-86, when it opened with six straight wins. The Nuggets forward had his best performance in the team's latest victory - a 133-123 win over Memphis on Sunday night.

Anthony scored a season-high 42 points on 15-of-26 shooting to record consecutive 40-point games for the first time in his six seasons in the league.

"I told you all before training camp started I felt better than I ever felt coming into a season," said Anthony, who scored 41 in Denver's 97-94 win at Portland on Thursday. "My stamina feels great. And I just feel good all around, my confidence is up. You know, I've got one thing ahead of me, which is that gold ball."

With Anthony's help, the Nuggets are among the league leaders in scoring (114.7 points per game) and shooting (50.2 percent). Chauncey Billups - starting his first full season in Denver - has also averaged 23.0 points, but he knows the team's success rides on his All-Star teammate.

"(Anthony's) riding a high wave right now and we're kind of getting on his back," Billups said. "He's playing great basketball. He's scoring a lot of points, but he's playing great basketball. He's making the right decisions when they double or they come across the lane. His energy level's up, he's vocal out there, he's just focused."

The Pacers (0-2), meanwhile, are off to their worst start in 10 seasons and trying to avoid opening with three straight losses for the first time since 1996-97.

Indiana's Danny Granger is again off to a strong start with a team-best 26.5 points per game, but the Pacers are among the league's worst defensive teams in allowing an average of 108.0 points.

After opening the season with 31 points Wednesday night in Atlanta, Granger finished with 22 in Friday night's 96-83 home loss to Miami and endured a 6-of-20 shooting performance - 3 of 12 from 3-point range.

Indiana shot 37 percent and was 4 of 23 from beyond the arc overall.

"That's a rough shooting night," said Granger, the only Pacer averaging more than 13.0 points. "You have some of those nights, and usually you have to rely on your defense, but we just couldn't put the game together."

Anthony was held to 20 points and shot 8 for 24 in a 100-94 loss at Indiana on March 1 after averaging 32.3 points in three consecutive Denver victories at Indiana. He's averaged 24.8 points in 12 lifetime games versus the Pacers.

Denver has won eight of 10 meetings dating back to Jan. 29, 2005, including four of five at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets will try to remain unbeaten on the season when they commence a six-game road trip Tuesday against the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Denver is 3-0 so far thanks to the red-hot play of Anthony, who leads the NBA in scoring with 37.7 points per game. Anthony compiled 42 points and seven rebounds in Sunday's 133-123 victory versus the Memphis Grizzlies at the Pepsi Center. It was his second straight game with 40 or more points, as he pumped in 41 in a victory at Portland on October 29.

"My body feels good, my stamina feels great," Anthony said after beating Memphis. "I just feel good all around. My confidence is up. I've got one thing ahead of me, which is that gold ball [atop the NBA Championship Trophy]."

Chauncey Billups contributed 22 points and 12 assists, and Nene added 18 points, nine boards and six assists in the victory. Denver, which will also visit the Nets, Heat, Hawks, Bulls and Bucks on the trek, is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since winning its first six contests in 1985-86. The best start in Nuggets history is when the 1976-77 team won its first eight games.

Meanwhile, the Pacers have been not so hot this season and fell to 0-2 on the young campaign following a 96-83 loss to the Miami Heat at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Danny Granger scored 22 points and Troy Murphy ended with 12 points and 13 boards for Indiana, which hasn't opened a season with three consecutive defeats since the 1996-97 campaign.

"I don't think we can put a full game together," Granger said. "Even though we held them to 43 percent on the defensive end, which is not bad, we shot 36. We just really couldn't put the game together."

The Nuggets and Pacers split a pair of meetings last season, with each team winning on its home floor. Denver has won eight of the last 10 matchups with Indiana, which is 10-4 in the past 14 games as the host in this series.

Rajon Rondo's emergence for the Boston Celtics has earned the point guard a five-year extension. The Philadelphia 76ers, meanwhile, are pretty happy with their new starter at that position.

Rondo and Philadelphia's Lou Williams form an intriguing matchup of talented young floor leaders Tuesday night as the Sixers try to hand the visiting Celtics their first defeat of the season.

After an impressive postseason and a strong start during which Rondo is averaging 11.8 assists per game, the 23-year-old signed an extension just before the Monday deadline after which he would have become a restricted free agent this summer.

Rondo will hope to make headlines for his on-court performance one game after gaining attention for a strange feud with star New Orleans point guard Chris Paul. The two got tangled under the basket during the second quarter Sunday, and Paul followed Rondo toward Boston's locker room after the Celtics' 97-87 victory.

Paul said after the game that Rondo is a "lucky guy" to play with Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.

"We have different styles based on what each team needs," Rondo said of Paul. "He has to do a lot more than what I have to do. My job is easy playing with these guys."

Still, Rondo has been one of the reasons Boston (4-0) has had few problems during the season's first week. After opening with a 95-89 victory at Cleveland, the Celtics won three home games by an average of nearly 25 points.

Pierce scored 27 while another strong defensive effort buoyed Boston against the Hornets. With Garnett back after missing the end of last season and the playoffs with knee problems, the Celtics' first four opponents have all scored 90 or fewer, shooting a combined 39.1 percent from the field.

"That's what I'm in there for," Garnett told the league's official Web site. "I'm in there trying to wreak havoc on defense and then trying to make it easy for everybody else."

The Sixers (2-1) will likely have a tougher time offensively than they did during a 141-127 overtime win at New York on Saturday night. Behind impressive efforts from Andre Iguodala (32 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists) and Williams, Philadelphia shot 60.7 percent from the field.

In his third NBA start after taking over for departed point guard Andre Miller, Williams had 27 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, shooting 10 of 12 from the field. He scored six of his points and grabbed four rebounds in overtime as the Sixers outscored the Knicks 19-5.

"We just continued to attack and attack," first-year coach Eddie Jordan said.

After losing in the first round of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, Philadelphia is hoping to make strides under Jordan, and a win over the Celtics would certainly help. Boston swept the Sixers in the 2008-09 season series and is 4-0 at the Wachovia Center since trading for Garnett and Allen in 2007.

The Celtics' two victories in Philadelphia last season - both without Garnett - came by a total of three points, with Pierce averaging 30.0 in those games.

Allen hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of a 100-99 win Feb. 3, while Pierce's clutch shot put Boston ahead for good with 2 minutes left in a 100-98 victory April 14.

The Boston Herald is reporting the point guard's deal is for five years, starting with the 2010-11 season, and is worth about $55 million. Rondo is averaging 6.5 points and 11.8 assists per game this season for Boston, which has won its first four games of the season, including Sunday's 97-87 victory over the New Orleans Hornets in the finale of a three-game homestand at TD Garden. Paul Pierce scored 27 points to help keep the Celtics unbeaten, while Ray Allen finished with 17 points in a winning effort.

Kevin Garnett contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and both Kendrick Perkins and Rasheed Wallace netted 12 points for Boston, which is 4-0 for the first time since opening the 2007-08 NBA championship season with eight consecutive victories.

"Give them credit, they made a lot of shots down the stretch," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said of the Hornets. "I told our guys, so far this year, we've done a great job of each game building and improving. This was not one of those nights."

The Celtics will also visit Minnesota on the brief road trip.

Philadelphia has won back-to-back games since opening the season with a loss at Orlando. It grinded out a 141-127 overtime victory against the New York Knicks on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, as Andre Iguodala recorded 32 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to lead the way. Lou Williams also filled the stat sheet for the 76ers, posting 27 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Thaddeus Young and Elton Brand registered 25 and 16 points, respectively, for Philadelphia, which scored the final 17 points of the extra period to seal the win in the Big Apple. Marreese Speights came off the bench and ended with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

"Both teams really gave it all, both teams gutted it out," Sixers head coach Eddie Jordan said. "Both teams were determined and we just got loose [in the overtime]...We just continued to attack and attack."

Boston won all four meetings with Philadelphia a year ago and is 10-4 over the previous 14 matchups between the clubs. The Celtics are unbeaten in their past four trips to the City of Brotherly Love.
