Utah's QB secrecy could affect TCU

November 2, 2009 1:54 PM

Posted by ESPN.com?s Graham Watson

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham knows who his starting quarterback against New Mexico will be, but he?s not sharing.

Similar to the beginning of the season, Whittingham said his quarterback choice between Terrance Cain and Jordan Wynn would be a game-time announcement, though he acknowledged that the choice already has been made.

?We know what we?re going to do, but we won?t name anything until game time,? Whittingham said. ?They?re just two different skill sets and two different types of quarterbacks. Why tip our hand if there?s no reason to??

Cain has started every game for the Utes this season, but against Wyoming last week, the offense struggled to put points on the board. Wynn made his collegiate debut in the second half and led the Utes to 19 consecutive points and a 22-10 win.

?We were just looking for a spark,? Whittingham said of Wynn coming in. ?Terrance didn?t play poorly in the first half, but the bottom line is in this game you?ve got to score points and we only had three points on the board and we were looking for a way to get some points generated.?

Whittingham said talks about pulling Wynn?s redshirt had been ongoing and that Wynn had been excited about the prospect of playing even if that meant losing a half season.

?If we were two weeks from now or even one week from now that conversation probably would have gone a little differently,? Whittingham said.

The fact that Wynn has now given up his redshirt season seems to suggest that he?s the guy from here on out. It would be hard for Whittingham to justify pulling the redshirt for 30 minutes against Wyoming and then not starting him.

However, this weekend?s game gives Whittingham and interesting chance for some gameplay leading into TCU. Although Whittingham maintains that he?s not looking past New Mexico, his quarterback shuffle could force TCU to prepare for two quarterbacks if Wynn and Cain both play against the Lobos and he declines to name a starter next week as well.

I hope they do start that freshman. I can't wait for that game next week. You can see me in the stands with a sign that says TCU covers again. Cash it in!

lol......don't be so quick...This kid is a stud. Hailed as one of the most accurate passers in his incoming class, and he can throw the long ball. Granted TCU can throw some looks @ him that could leave him wishing he never left high school, he is still a solid QB. Pair that with Utah's D and I think Utah has a shot at upsetting TCU. I will have to see the line to know how I would play it, but I think it will be a solid game on both sides.

Oh, I know it will be a good game. Just having my fun. I see the line as TCU -7 or -9. TCU is 1-3 SU against Utah and it's always a tough game.
