ACC Championship Preview

The fifth installment of the ACC Championship takes place this Saturday night in Tampa, as both Georgia Tech (10-2, 7-1 ACC) and Clemson (8-4, 6-2 ACC) look to claim its first conference title since the league's expansion in 2003. The ACC instituted the championship game in 2005 after Boston College joined the conference, giving the league 12 teams. Interestingly, two of three teams that left the Big East to migrate to the ACC have enjoyed the most success as far as conference title appearances go.

Virginia Tech has claimed two conference championships, while losing to Florida State in the inaugural ACC title game in 2005. Boston College has been on the short end the last two years against Virginia Tech, while Miami does not have an ACC title game appearance on its ledger.

Georgia Tech fell in the 2006 ACC title game to Wake Forest as 2 ?-point favorites in a scintillating 9-6 loss to the Demon Deacons. Clemson will be making its first appearance in the ACC championship, while the Tigers seek their first conference title since 1991, the year before FSU joined the ACC.

The Jackets and Tigers began the ACC schedule on September 10, as Tech beat Clemson, 30-27 at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta. Tech jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the second quarter thanks to a pair of touchdowns from over 80 yards out, including an 82-yard touchdown scamper from Anthony Allen. Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker rallied the Tigers back with three touchdown tosses, as a 63-yard score by the electric C.J. Spiller began the scoring barrage.

The Tigers eventually took a 27-24 advantage in the final quarter, but the Ramblin' Wreck kicked a pair of field goals to win the game. Georgia Tech ran for 301 yards, despite leading rusher Jonathan Dwyer rushing for just 66 yards in the victory. However, the Tigers cashed tickets as 5 ?-point road underdogs, while easily sailing 'over' the total of 44.

Georgia Tech followed up the Clemson win with a poor showing at Miami the next week, as the Hurricanes drilled the Jackets, 33-17. The 'Canes outgained the Jackets, 454-228, as Georgia Tech was limited to 95 yards on 39 carries. The Wreck bounced back by winning eight straight games, including all six ACC contests. Tech's hot streak was slowed up by intra-state rival Georgia last Saturday, 30-24. Paul Johnson's squad cashed plenty of tickets after the Miami defeat, going 7-2 ATS the last nine games.

Clemson began the season dropping two of its first three ACC contests, including a disappointing loss at underachieving Maryland. The Tigers rebounded by winning each of their last five conference games, scoring at least 34 points in each victory. The most glaring win out of the five was an overtime triumph at Miami, 40-37, as Spiller scored a pair of touchdowns, including a kickoff return for a score prior to the half. The Tigers ended the season with a 34-17 setback at rival South Carolina, snapping a six-game winning streak. Clemson has drilled the 'over' in five straight lined games, while going 'over' the total in two of three games listed at 55 or above.

Handicapper Joe feels the ACC took a hit when Clemson and Georgia Tech each stubbed their toes last week, "With both teams losing last week to SEC teams, this ACC title game has lost some of its national scope in a year where the conference appeared to be making some progress in its national presence."

However, Joe says that the Yellow Jackets' running game will make or break them on Saturday, "Georgia Tech's rushing numbers have been incredibly impressive this season, but quality defenses have been able to slow the Jackets down and having already faced the Tigers this year will be an advantage. Clemson adds the potential for scoring on special teams with the most dangerous return man in the nation with Heisman candidate C.J. Spiller."

Handicapper Brian says that last Saturday's performances by each squad may hurt them this week, "I think bettors have to be concerned about how both of these teams played last week. I don't think you can blame last week's lackluster efforts on the look-ahead spot because both were playing their in-state rivals with bragging rights on the line."

Brian is bullish on the Jackets the second time around after they got by the Tigers earlier this season, "I had Georgia Tech in the first game back in September and lost when Clemson produced the backdoor cover. Nevertheless, I think the Yellow Jackets are the side here because I give them a big advantage in coaching. Dwyer and Josh Nesbitt will make more big plays than Spiller, and Georgia Tech will win the ACC just as I predicted back in August to pay me and others a plus-750 payout."

Joe says that the Tigers benefited from playing on the Atlantic side of the conference, "Clemson has been the vastly superior defensive team on the year, but the schedule has been less difficult and the Tigers have been a poor road team this season with much worse performances. Georgia Tech is a difficult match-up in this situation and the Jackets were more dominant in ACC play and were victorious the first time around."

The Yellow Jackets are currently listed as a one-point favorite at most outfits, with the total set at 55. The game kicks off at 8:00 PM Eastern at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Saturday night.

Clemson vs Georgia Tech (Pick) 8:00E ESPN

It?s a rematch from Sept.10 for the ACC championship. In that contest, Georgia Tech jumped out to a 24-0 lead over Clemson, with RB Anthony Allen scoring on an 82-yard run and Jerrard Tarrant taking a punt back 85 yards. The Tigers weathered the storm and settled in and scored the game?s next 27 points to take the lead. The Yellow Jackets (10-2, 7-4-1 ATS) reestablished their option offense and put together two drives that resulted in field goals, including the winner with under a minute to escape 30-27. Georgia Tech is 5-1 and 3-3 ATS vs. Clemson last six meetings.

Georgia Tech?s option offense had stung opponents for 39 points per game during its eight game winning streak before losing to rival Georgia. One edge they have enjoyed is teams had only one week to prepare for unique offense. Though Clemson will have the same time frame having played South Carolina last week, they?ve had enough time to breakdown tape of their earlier matchup. Coach Paul Johnson, whose 19-6 (15-7 ATS) mark through two seasons is the best in Tech history, has shown his offense can work playing against better competition. The Yellow Jackets are perfect 8-0 ATS versus defensive teams allowing 310 or less yards a game over the last two seasons.

Clemson (8-4, 7-4 ATS) has finally broken thru, winning seven of eight contests and playing like a team which finally exceeded expectations. Coach Dabo Swinney was finally able to sell the upperclassmen on the idea of being accountable for actions. Seniors like C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford have been among the leaders that by example both verbally and by actions. One noticeable difference also has been the defense. Clemson?s had numerous players with all-ACC ability, but this group is No. 1 in total defense in the league and 14th nationally. The Tigers are 2-11 ATS when they allow 250 to 300 rushing yards.

Clemson should have learned something from Georgia?s win, pound away at Yellow Jackets front seven. The Tigers have three running backs each with a different style, make it work and score touchdowns. If Clemson doesn?t run effectively and is forced to pass, they drop to 2-8 ATS after scoring less than 20 points in last game.

Interesting to note in common opponents Clemson is 4-0 (3-1 ATS) winning by almost 17 points a game, while Georgia Tech is 3-1 (2-2 ATS) with a winning margin of 4.2 PPG.

(12) Georgia Tech (10-2) vs. (25) Clemson (8-4)

GAME NOTES: With the ACC Championship on the line, the 12th-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets tangle with the 25th-ranked Clemson Tigers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida this Saturday night.

Georgia Tech, led by two-time ACC Coach of the Year Paul Johnson, is 10-2 on the season and won the league's Coastal Division with a 7-1 mark. The Yellow Jackets are making their second appearance in the ACC title tilt, losing to Wake Forest in 2006 in a 9-6 final.

Georgia Tech and Clemson are meeting for the second time this season, as the Yellow Jackets squandered a 24-point lead in Atlanta back on September 10th, only to come roaring back to claim a 30-27 victory.

The Tigers come into this clash sporting an 8-4 record, which includes a 6-2 ledger in ACC play. That league mark was good enough to earn coach Dabo Swinney's club the ACC Atlantic Division title, allowing Clemson to play in its first-ever ACC Championship Game.

Both teams are coming off losses to non-league, in-state rivals, as Georgia Tech dropped a 30-24 decision to Georgia, while Clemson fell to South Carolina, 34-17. Prior to those setbacks, the Yellow Jackets had won eight straight, while the Tigers had won six in a row.

Georgia Tech owns a 48-24-2 advantage in the all-time series with Clemson, and the Yellow Jackets have won the last three meetings, and five of the last six overall.

Despite the recent loss to bitter rival Georgia, coach Johnson is optimistic about his team's chances this week in Tampa. "We're especially disappointed with the outcome of the last game, so this gives us a chance to play again. We're looking forward to it."

Coach Swinney was equally excited about playing for the league's top prize, "This is really what its all about. This is a great opportunity for us. This was the whole objective from the start. That is what all the teams across the country are trying to do. It is all about winning championships. It doesn't matter what league or level you are in, it is all about being the champion when it is all said and done."

If the Yellow Jackets are going to come out of this as ACC champs, they will need to continue with what has got them here, and that's to run, run and run some more. Boasting two prolific ground gainers in Jonathan Dwyer (197 carries, 1,236 yards, 12 TDs) and Josh Nesbitt (237 carries, 888 yards, 17 TDs), the Georgia Tech offense typically batters foes into submission by averaging 5.3 ypc, 305.0 rushing ypg. 43 of the team's 53 TDs have come on the ground.

Nesbitt, Georgia Tech's starting QB, has attempted just 137 passes this season, completing 64 of them for 1,553 yards with nine TDs against only four INTs. Demaryius Thomas has clearly been Nesbitt's favorite target, as he has 44 catches for 1,077 yards and seven scores -- truly remarkable numbers considering Tech's propensity for running the football.

A total of six Jackets earned All-ACC First Team honors, five on offense, while three Tigers made the team.

The Georgia Tech defense is giving up 352.2 total ypg, with 135.7 ypg coming on the ground and 216.6 ypg coming via the pass. The Yellow Jackets have allowed nearly twice as many passing TDs (21) as rushing ones (11), and Brad Jefferson is the team's leading tackler with 87 stops. Derrick Morgan has been a man possessed along the defensive line, posting 12.5 sacks, while Morgan Burnett has made 73 tackles and leads the club with four INTs.

Johnson knows that his defense is going to have to rise to the occasion this week and limit the big plays the Clemson offense is capable of ripping off. "Clemson is a very talented football team that's very physical." He continued, "I think they're probably more efficient offensively [than in the first meeting between the two teams]. Their quarterback has gotten better as the year has gone on, although he played pretty good against us the last time. C.J. Spiller is a dynamic special team's guy and they try to make sure he gets the ball. Then you have Jacoby Ford who is a really good player, so they have a lot of weapons on offense."

The Clemson offense is every bit as explosive as Georgia Tech's, but the Tigers prefer a more balanced approach. As a result, the rushing figure comes in at 156.8 ypg and the team generates 204.7 ypg through the air. Scoring- wise, Clemson is averaging 31.8 ppg and has reached the end zone 17 times on the ground, 22 times passing and a whopping seven times on returns. Spiller is at the top of the heap when it comes to all-purpose threats in the country, rushing for 912 yards and seven TDs, while catching 32 balls for 440 yards and four more scores. He has also scored five times on kick/punt returns. Ford is the team's go-to guy down the field, as he has 50 grabs for 703 yards and five TDs, while tight end Michael Palmer has enjoyed a solid year as well, catching 38 passes for 439 yards and four scores. Kyle Parker is Clemson's starting QB, and he has completed 55.3 percent of his passes this season for 2,294 yards, 19 TDs and 10 INTs.

Defensively, the matchup between Georgia Tech's 12-ranked scoring offense (35.0 ppg) and Clemson's 21st-ranked scoring defense (19.5 ppg) will be key as the Tigers try to stop the Yellow Jackets' vaunted ground assault. Opponents are averaging 135.1 ypg rushing and another 169.4 ypg passing, and only six TDs have been permitted by the Clemson defense by way of the run. Brandon Maye is the team's top tackler, having logged 90 stops to this point, while Kavell Conner and Marcus Gilchrist are close behind with 87 and 86, respectively. Ricky Sapp has made 14 of his 52 total tackles behind the line of scrimmage, while DeAndre McDaniel has eight INTs, one of which he returned for a TD, and Rashard Hall has six picks. Maye has forced five fumbles.

Swinney knows his defense has its work cut out for it this week. "Offensively they [the Yellow Jackets] have had an excellent year. The biggest thing is that they don't throw the ball very much. They are averaging about five completions a game but they are averaging 24 yards a catch. We have to do our job on the defensive side of the ball."

This should be a classic battle between two evenly-matched teams. With the league title and automatic berth to a BCS game up for grabs, expect blows back and forth and for the Yellow Jackets to be left standing on the strength of their punishing rushing attack.

Predicted Outcome: Georgia Tech 27, Clemson 24
