(18) Houston (10-2) at East Carolina (8-4)

Saturday, December 5th, 12:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: The East Carolina Pirates go for their second straight Conference USA title this weekend, as they host the 18th-ranked Houston Cougars in the championship game at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

While Houston has grabbed most of the headlines in C-USA this season, the Pirates have just gone about their business and quietly finished with the league's best record at 7-1. The team's hopes for a second straight East Division title, however, came down to the final weekend, as ECU needed a 25-20 victory over Southern Miss to secure its spot in the championship game.

"It was a great win," said head coach Skip Holtz. "I'm really proud of these players. We said it was going to go all the way down to the end. There were a lot of great individual performances tonight."

The Pirates have now won 10 of their last 11 home games in conference play, so it was rather big that they earned home field advantage for this game. Last season, ECU played for the C-USA title on the road and emerged with a 27-24 victory at Tulsa. A conference title on their home field this season would certainly be even sweeter.

As for the Cougars, they too needed to win their final game of the regular season to earn a spot in this game and they did so in convincing fashion, routing Rice by a 73-14 score over the weekend.

"Everyone knew what was at stake here tonight from a big-picture standpoint," said head coach Kevin Sumlin said. "Our guys came out today and showed how important this game is to them."

The 73 points were the second-most scored in a C-USA game, as Houston tied the program record for regular-season wins with 10. The Cougars, who are 6-2 within the conference, are making their second C-USA championship game appearance, with their first resulting in a 24-20 win over Southern Miss in 2006.

With respect to the all-time series, ECU holds a 5-4 edge over Houston, but the Cougars have won two straight at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Last season, the Cougars knocked off 23-ranked ECU, 41-24, in Greenville, giving Houston its first road win against a ranked opponent since 1984.

Tyron Carrier returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and the Cougars never looked back. Houston built a 59-0 halftime lead and could have possibly broken the century mark if the starters weren't removed, as it coasted to a 73-14 win over Rice this past weekend.

Putting up big offensive numbers is nothing new for the Cougars though, as they are averaging 44.9 ppg and 583.2 total ypg for the season. Leading the charge is quarterback Case Keenum, who threw for 323 yards and a pair of scores on 25-of-31 tosses last weekend. One of the most prolific quarterbacks in the nation, Keenum has just been off the charts this season, completing an efficient 70.5 percent of his pass attempts for 4,922 yards, with 38 touchdowns and only six interceptions.

Keenum's favorite target is James Cleveland, who has 82 catches and 11 scores, but he has missed the last two games with a leg injury and is listed as questionable. Options are plentiful for Keenum though, as Carrier and Patrick Edwards have both totaled over 70 catches and 900 receiving yards on the campaign. Carrier is also a threat on special teams, having returned three kickoffs for touchdowns this season.

Bryce Bell and Charles Sims share the workload in the backfield and the duo have combined for 1,283 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground this season.

Where the Cougars have been vulnerable is on defense, as they are giving up 445.2 total ypg on the year. Houston has really had issues stopping the run and that is certainly a cause for concern this weekend. Opponents are averaging 226.9 rushing ypg against his defense, which has permitted 28 touchdowns on the ground. The unit has compensated some by coming up with 17 fumbles, although it is still giving up way too many rushing yards.

Last weekend against Rice, the Cougars allowed 377 total yards, with 243 coming via the run. It wasn't a great measuring tool though, as the game was well out of hand when Rice was finally able to move the ball. Houston also picked off three passes, one of which was returned for a touchdown by Brandon Brinkley. It was the fourth interception of the season for Brinkley, who is now one behind Jamal Robinson for the team lead. Robinson had two picks in last weekend's win.

Houston also has a trio of players that have topped 100 tackles for the season in Marcus McGraw, C.J. Cavness and Nick Saenz and they figure to be busy trying to stop ECU's ground attack this weekend.

The Pirates ran the ball for 172 yards and threw for 269 more, using their balanced attack to defeat Southern Miss, 25-20, over the weekend.

"The offense had a really good day and put up some big yards," said Holtz. "I thought Patrick Pinkney was really dialed in."

Pinkney, who led ECU to the title last year, threw for 269 yards on 25-of-41 pass attempts last weekend. Not a big-number type of guy, Pinkney makes plays when he has to and he has thrown for 2,476 yards and 13 scores on the season.

Dwayne Harris is his main target through the air and he leads the squad with 70 receptions for 791 yards and five scores. The versatile Harris also has five touchdowns on the ground, to go with three more on kickoff returns. Clearly one of the most explosive players in the league, look for Harris to make an impact this weekend.

Another player that will surely see his fair share of touches is tailback Dominique Lindsay, who has rushed for 954 yards and three scores in 10 games. ECU will certainly look to keep the ball from the Houston's offense and the best way to do that is by eating up the clock behind the strong running of Lindsay.

C.J. Wilson blocked an extra-point and then scooped the ball up and brought it back for a score, giving ECU a 22-20 lead midway through the final quarter of last weekend's game. Southern Miss had just tied the game before Wilson's return that proved to be the game-wining play.

"We talked about how special this defensive line is and how strong their push up front has been," said Holtz.

The line has certainly played a big part in this solid defense, which has posted 26 sacks and forced a whopping 29 turnovers on the campaign. ECU however, has shown some vulnerability to the pass, allowing 240.2 ypg, and that is an area Houston will surely try to attack this weekend.

Van Eskridge is the leader of the secondary and he will be counted to make big plays this weekend. The safety leads the team with four interceptions and is tied for first in tackles with 83. Wilson will also try make things uncomfortable for Keenum with a strong push and he has 9.5 TFLs and a team- high 5.5 sacks to his credit.

ECU slowed down Tulsa's high-powered attack in last year's title game, so this is a rather familiar situation for the squad. The Cougars though, are just too hot right now and Keenum should be able to carry them past the Pirates for the league title this weekend.

Predicted Outcome: Houston 34, East Carolina 24

No. 18 Cougars, Pirates meet for C-USA title

No. 18 Cougars, Pirates meet for C-USA title

No. 18 Cougars, Pirates meet for C-USA title

Scotty Robinson can't do anything around East Carolina's campus without hearing people weigh in on Saturday's matchup with No. 18 Houston in the Conference USA championship game.

``It's been buzzing all week,'' the senior defensive end said. ``I've got people calling me from everywhere to get tickets. There's been pep rallies all over campus. Every class I go to, people are saying, 'You've got to get this one.'''

The Pirates (8-4, 7-1 C-USA) are the defending champions and hosting the game for the first time after winning the East Division with the best overall league record. East Carolina can become the first repeat winner since the league went to a divisional format in 2005.

But the Cougars (10-2, 6-2) are the favorite, boasting an offense that East Carolina coach Skip Holtz jokes puts up ``video game-type numbers'' behind quarterback Case Keenum.

It's also a team that pounded the Pirates in last season's meeting at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, rolling up 621 total yards in a 41-24 victory.

It's a memory that lingers with the Pirates, if for no other reason than it gave them an up-close look at the Keenum-led attack that has scored 128 points in the past two games and left the Pirates gasping for air last season. And because East Carolina's secondary has allowed six touchdown passes of 43 yards or more - including scores of 80 and 96 yards - Holtz said his team's oft-criticized offense will have to shoulder a significant burden to help the defense.

That means efficient passing from sixth-year quarterback Patrick Pinkney, who will look to get to the ball to big-play threat Dwayne Harris, and a strong dose of Dominique Lindsay carrying the football.

``You can't just go three-and-out, but you can't just sit on the ball and run quarterback sneaks and try to inch it out and eat up the clock,'' Holtz said. ``It can't be your only goal. You have to try to score points, but the offense is going to have to try to protect the defense some in this game.''

Regardless, hosting the championship game is another step forward for the Pirates under their fifth-year coach. He inherited a program that had lost 22 of 25 games, but his second team reached a bowl game in 2006, then his third squad won a bowl. Last year, the Pirates won the C-USA East after falling just short the previous two years, then forced Tulsa's high-powered offense into seven turnovers in a 27-24 road win for the program's first conference championship since 1976.

Last year's Pirates also upset Virginia Tech and West Virginia to open the season and earn national rankings, but the Cougars knocked them out of the polls while earning their first win against a ranked team in a dozen years.

``Defensively we came with great energy, feeding off our offense,'' cornerback Brandon Brinkley said. ``Everything was just going together - offense would make plays and defense would create turnovers and then we scored off of them. It was a whole team win.''

East Carolina has won seven straight home games against league opponents since, including last week's 25-20 win against a Southern Mississippi team that had taken 15 of 17 meetings against the Pirates in Greenville coming in.

Houston has tied the program record for single-season wins, though the Cougars were so dominant in a 55-14 win against Memphis and a 73-14 win last week against Rice that key players have been able to rest during the second half. But receiver Tyron Carrier said he didn't think it would prevent the Cougars from coming out sharp Saturday.

``It can help us in most ways seeing that we're fresh. But it could also harm us because we haven't played a full game in a while,'' Carrier said. ``But wins like that really don't do anything but help you, it keeps everybody confident. I like winning like that.''

GAME NOTES: The fifth-ranked and undefeated Cincinnati Bearcats will battle the 14th-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers this weekend at Heinz Field, with the winner earning the Big East's automatic berth to a BSC bowl.

With Pitt's loss to West Virginia this past week, the Bearcats are already guaranteed at least a share of the league title, as they are one game up on the Panthers at 6-0. Cincinnati, which won the outright title last season and advanced to the Orange Bowl, is off to an 11-0 start for the first time in school history. Included in that record is a 49-36 besting of Illinois this past weekend in a non-conference affair.

"This was a great football game," said Brian Kelly, whose program is one of six still undefeated in the nation. "There was a great atmosphere at Nippert Stadium today. It is fun. We played a good football team. At this point, it is about finding ways to win."

Winners of their last 17 regular-season games, the Bearcats are obviously one of the top teams around and with a little lucky and a win this weekend, they could even end up playing for the national title.

As for Pitt, its chances of winning the outright Big East title came to and end last Friday with a last-second 19-16 loss to rival West Virginia in the annual "Backyard Brawl" in Morgantown.

"The only comment that I have looking back, and it's really nothing different from what I said after the game, is that we just didn't make enough plays in some critical situations to give ourselves a chance to win the game in a very tough environment on the road. Its as simple as that," said head coach Dave Wannstedt.

Despite the loss, which snapped a six-game win streak, the Panthers can still complete a terrific regular-season campaign with a win this weekend. A victory would give Pitt its first 10-win campaign since 1981 and its first Big East title since sharing the crown in 2004 and moving on to the Fiesta Bowl.

Pitt leads the head-to-head series with Cincinnati, 7-1, but the Bearcats grabbed their lone win and the "River City Rivalry" trophy with a 28-21 victory at Nippert Stadium last season.

Tony Pike, making his first start since suffering a injury to his left forearm, threw for 399 yards and a career-high six touchdowns in a victory over Illinois this past weekend.

"It is awesome to be back," stated Pike, who was injured against South Florida on October 15th and returned in a limited role against West Virginia on November 13th. "I was ready. Sitting for so long, you just want to get back out there and start playing."

A possible Heisman Trophy candidate prior to the injury, Pike is among the top quarterbacks in the nation and despite missing time, he has still thrown for 2,048 yards, with 23 scores and just three picks in eight appearances.

Two weapons at Pike's disposal are wideouts Mardy Gilyard and Armon Binns. The elusive and versatile Gilyard leads the team with 75 catches, 1,032 yards and 10 touchdowns, while the more physical Binns follows with 51 receptions for 755 yards and nine scores. Last weekend, Gilyard was simply sensational, racking up 102 yards and two scores through the air, while also returning a kickoff 90 yards for another touchdown.

In the backfield, Isaiah Pead is the team's leading rusher with 682 yards and eight scores. He is averaging an electric 6.5 yards per carry, but wasn't a factor last weekend after rushing for 175 yards against West Virginia the prior game.

On defense is where Cincinnati has to be concerned, as the unit hasn't played that well in recent weeks following a surprising start to the season. Over the last three games, the Bearcats are allowing 34.0 ppg, which is well above their season average of 18.6 ppg.

Last weekend, Cincinnati's defense wasn't all that sharp either, as the group permitting 476 total yards, including 307 through the air, to Illinois.

"They are who they are," said coach Kelly. "They have to battle. We are grinding out there. We don't help our defense very much on offense. We just want to win. We have an offense; so let them go. We played 21 minutes of offense compared to their 36 minutes."

The defense not only spent an abundance of time on the field, but the unit also failed to come up with a single sack or turnover. That was the biggest surprise from a unit which has notched 32 sacks and 14 interceptions on the campaign.

J.K. Schaffer paced the defense with 14 stops and he now has 81 tackles, to with three picks for the season. Aaron Webster also has three interceptions to his credit, while Andre Revels tops the roster with 96 tackles.

The Panthers were held to a season-low 16 points last weekend, as they dropped a heart-breaker to WVU. Pitt, which is averaging a much higher 32.4 ppg for the season, did receive another big game from Dion Lewis, as he rushed for 155 yards on 26 carries. It marked the eighth 100-yard effort of the season for the freshman sensation, who has now totaled 1,446 yards and 13 scores on the ground in a simply remarkable rookie campaign.

Quarterback Bill Stull however, had his worst game of the season last week, completing only 16-of-30 tosses for 179 yards and two picks. He did have a late 50-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 16-16, but he was inconsistent for most of the night. Despite that performance, Stull has managed one of the more balanced offenses in the Big East by completing 64.9 percent of his tosses for 2,229 yards, with 19 scores and only six interceptions.

"Right now, after 11 games, we're statistically in the top ten in the country in a lot of meaningful offensive categories," said Wannstedt. "We're balanced. If you look at the Big East, we're first, second, or third, in almost every offensive category, running or throwing the ball."

Jonathan Baldwin hauled in that long touchdown pass from Stull against WVU and he finished the game with eight catches for 127 yards. One of the top receivers in the league, Baldwin recorded his sixth 100-yard performance of the campaign and is now just 33 yards shy of reaching the 1,000-yard plateau for the season. Dorin Dickerson wasn't a factor last week, but the talented tight end is a threat in the red zone, catching 10 touchdowns for the year.

Pitt's defense had a couple of letdowns last week and they proved costly. The unit first gave up an 88-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter before allowing WVU to drive 42 yards over the final 2:48 to set up a game-winning 43-yard field goal as time expired.

Still, the Panthers only gave up 19 points in the game, so it's kind of hard to fault the defense. Pitt managed only two sacks in the setback and that was really surprising from a team that has registered 42 on the year. If the Panthers are to have any chance of slowing down Cincinnati's attack, they will have to get to Pike on a consistent basis.

Mick Williams and Greg Romeus are two players that have had success getting into the backfield and will surely be counted on to continue their run this weekend. The duo have combined for 25 TFLs and 11.5 sacks and will need to establish their presence early in this one.

This is obviously the biggest game of the season for both programs and a battle is expected at Heinz Field. Cincinnati is enjoying a remarkable campaign, but Pitt has the luxury of hosting this game. The Panthers are clearly the better defensive team, and if their offense can control the clock behind Lewis on the ground, expect Pitt to pull off the upset this weekend.

Predicted Outcome: Pittsburgh 31, Cincinnati 27
