Week 13 power rankings

Week 13 power rankings

Week 13 power rankings

1. New Orleans Saints: Have to avoid the letdown game against the Redskins.

2. Indianapolis Colts: Getting the idea they don't mind trailing by double digits.

3. Minnesota Vikings: An Adrian Peterson fumble away from offensive perfection.

4. San Diego Chargers: Brandon Siler has made a difference in starting lineup.

5. New England Patriots: Dolphins will be tough opponent despite their curious loss.

6. Dallas Cowboys: Still leaving points out on the field.

7. Cincinnati Bengals: Have scored more than 18 points only once since Week Four.

8. Philadelphia Eagles: Jason Avant continues to make clutch catches.

9. Arizona Cardinals: Darnell Dockett's huge game overshadowed.

10. Green Bay Packers: Can we finally put Aaron Rodgers in the MVP discussion?

11. Denver Broncos: Don't bury this team just yet.

12. Pittsburgh Steelers: Could not have asked for more out of Dennis Dixon.

13. Baltimore Ravens: Paul Kruger showed what he can do when he's healthy.

14. New York Giants: That offensive line just isn't the same group we have known.

15. Atlanta Falcons: Get ready for the daily Ryan and Turner health updates.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Odd team lost another odd game.

17. Tennessee Titans: Kenny Britt is becoming a top-flight receiver.

18. Houston Texans: After six brutal days, Gary Kubiak has to be feeling the heat.

19. San Francisco 49ers: Jags forced Alex Smith to throw, and he delivered.

20. Miami Dolphins: Inexcusable flop against wayward Bills.

21. New York Jets: Guess Kerry Rhodes (two picks) got the message.

22. Chicago Bears: So many needs, so few draft picks left to use.

23. Carolina Panthers: At least Dwayne Jarrett showed a little life.

24. Buffalo Bills: Too bad Perry Fewell won't even get a shot at this job.

25. Seattle Seahawks: One of only two road teams to win Sunday.

26. Washington Redskins: Zorn won't get credit, but 'Skins are playing well of late.

27. Kansas City Chiefs: Strange mix of old and young players isn't getting it done.

28. Oakland Raiders: Darrius Heyward-Bey finally got the monkey off his back.

29. Detroit Lions: Probably didn't hurt Stafford more by playing him with bad wing.

30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Raheem Morris, meet Cam Cameron.

31. St. Louis Rams: James Laurinaitis just keeps killing guys despite mounting losses.

32. Cleveland Browns: Mangini needs to pull a Tiger Woods when Randy Lerner calls.

- If nothing else, it ought to be dramatic.

When the Philadelphia Eagles head south to face the Atlanta Falcons this weekend, fans at the Georgia Dome might be safe wandering the concourses or navigating the city's garbled traffic for the initial three quarters - so long as they're back in time for the end.

Because as recent history shows, that's all that really matters for these two teams.

Now 7-4 and a game off the pace in the always-contentious NFC East, the Eagles have used fourth-quarter magic for wins in two consecutive weeks, maintaining their premium position looking toward the playoffs, and no doubt causing widespread agita among the diehards at Broad and Pattison.

Two weeks ago at Chicago, young running back LeSean McCoy went in from 10 yards out with less than six minutes to go in a 24-20 win against the Bears. Then, at home against Washington last Sunday, the Eagles scored 11 points in the final eight minutes for a 27-24 defeat of the Redskins.

The two heart-stoppers came on the heels of two not-so-happy results - a 20-16 home loss to hated rival Dallas and a subsequent 31-23 defeat at the hands of resurgent AFC powerhouse San Diego.

It was even more breathless last week for the Falcons.

Without second-year quarterback Matt Ryan due to injury, the hosts took it down to the final minute of the final quarter before backup QB Chris Redman hit wideout Roddy White on a 4th-and-goal heave from the 5-yard-line to secure a 20-17 win over Tampa Bay.

Redman will get the start again this week for Atlanta, which ruled Ryan out for the Eagles.

Running back Michael Turner is questionable after reinjuring an ankle against the Bucs, adding to a weekly MASH unit that includes Philly's Brian Westbrook (out, concussion), DeSean Jackson (doubtful, concussion) and tackle Brodrick Bunkley (questionable, ankle), along with the Falcons' Harvey Dahl (questionable, ankle), Brian Finneran (questionable, knee), Michael Jenkins (questionable, knee) and Tony Gilbert (questionable, hamstring).

And speaking of drama, one player who will be on hand for likely turmoil - if not exactly production - is Michael Vick, who'll return to his former home for the first time since a prison term and a subsequent signing by the Eagles in the offseason this summer.

Vick has completed three of nine passes for six yards in brief stints at Philadelphia's wildcat quarterback, while rushing for 65 yards on 15 carries. He played for Atlanta from 2001-06, including a 1,039-yard rushing season with 20 touchdown passes in his final year with the Falcons.

"It's definitely been discussed," Finneran, a former teammate (and former Eagle), said. "But it was more of a poof than if somebody had dropped a bomb on you. I think playing time is part of it. We don't expect him to come in here and play quarterback for 55 snaps. The other part is it's how many years ago? Three?"

SERIES HISTORY

The Eagles hold a 13-10-1 edge in their all-time regular season series with the Falcons, and have won each of the last two head-to-head meetings with Atlanta. Philadelphia was a 27-14 winner when the Falcons visited Lincoln Financial Field in Week 8 of last season, and prevailed by a 24-17 count in Week 17 of the 2006 season, a game that would turn out to be Vick's final one with the Falcons. Vick led Atlanta to a triumph in the previous meeting, a 14-10 affair at the Georgia Dome in a Monday Night matchup to open the 2005 campaign. The Eagles last won in Atlanta in 2003.

In addition to their regular season advantage, the Eagles are 2-1 against the Falcons in the playoffs. Philadelphia was a 27-10 winner in the 2004 NFC Championship, defeated the Falcons, 20-6, in a 2002 NFC Divisional Playoff, and dropped a 14-13 road decision in a 1978 NFC First-Round Playoff.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid is 6-1 as a head coach against Atlanta, including the two aforementioned playoff wins. The Falcons' Mike Smith is 0-1 against both Reid and the Eagles as a head coach.

WHEN THE EAGLES HAVE THE BALL

McNabb is 3-1 in his career against the Falcons, including an NFC title game win against Vick and the Falcons. In 44 career starts in which he's exceeded a 100 passer rating, his teams are 43-1. Last week's appearance was his 143rd as an Eagle, passing Ron Jaworski for first in franchise history among quarterbacks. Among his new, dynamic set of weapons, running back McCoy has 175 yards on the ground in his last two games and leads conference rookies with 528 yards. Tight end Brent Celek is expected to play after sustaining a sprained thumb. He has a TD catch in three of his last five games and fellow tight end Jason Avant has 90-plus yards receiving in two of his last three games. Elsewhere, wideout Jeremy Maclin is second among rookies with four TD catches. If he plays, Jackson can continue a torrid season that's seen him record all eight of his TDs from 35 yards or longer.

The Falcons will try to keep McNabb in check with pressure, an approach that, based on recent history, could work. Defensive end John Abraham had 3.5 sacks against the Eagles while with the New York Jets in October 2003 and has 3.5 overall this season. Fellow end Jamaal Anderson had a sack in his last matchup with Philadelphia and has recorded a half-sack this year. Meanwhile, tackle Jonathan Babineaux has posted 4.5 sacks in his last five games and leads the team with five. All told, Atlanta's compiled 21 sacks in 11 games. Safety Thomas DeCoud and cornerback Brent Grimes have each picked off two passes to share the lead on a unit that's managed just eight overall. Linebacker Curtis Lofton leads with 108 tackles, including 85 solos. Statistically, the Falcons surrender 373.9 yards per game - 121.3 on the ground and 252.6 by the pass.

WHEN THE FALCONS HAVE THE BALL

Someone will probably be limping. With Turner likely going at less than 100 percent, if at all, more emphasis will be on the right arm of Redman, who completed 23-of-41 for 243 yards and two TDs against the Bucs. The start will be his first since December 2007 with Seattle, when he threw four TDs and had a career-best 132.9 passer rating. Turner leads the NFL with 27 touchdowns since joining the Falcons in 2008. His understudy, Jerious Norwood, had a 22-yard TD catch last week. On the outside, wideout White had eight catches for 113 yards and two scores in his last meeting with the Eagles and has four big-scoring plays of 20 or more yards, tied for fourth in the league. A hobbled Jenkins looks for a third straight outing with at least six catches and 75 yards, while security blanket tight end Tony Gonzalez aims for a fifth straight December game with a touchdown.

Count cornerback Asante Samuel as the leading shark circling Redman this week while looking to add on a seven-interception total that's the most for an Eagle since Troy Vincent picked off seven passes in 1999. Samuel had an INT in his last meeting with the Falcons and has six overall in his last eight games. The seven this season are tied for third in the NFL and his 27 since 2006 are best in the league. Up front, end Trent Cole has at least a half-sack in nine of 11 games this season and is third in the NFC with 9.5 overall. Fellow end Darren Howard had a sack the last time he met the Falcons and has seven in his career against Atlanta. By the numbers, the Eagles allow a stingy 304.9 yards per game and maintain a plus-9 turnover ratio that's third-best in the conference. Just more than 100 yards per week come on the ground, while a shade more than 200 are through the air. Safety Quentin Mikell is high man with 59 tackles, including 46 solos.

FANTASY FOCUS

Injuries scale back some options for both sides, but McCoy could be a good big- play play for the Eagles. Also, Celek should thrive as well, presuming his thumb is healed enough. For the Falcons, in the potential absence of Turner, expect Ryan to lean heavily on Gonzalez and White, along with some additional work for Norwood. The Eagles' defense could be poised for turnovers as well.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

If everyone were healthy and 100 percent, the Eagles would be a narrow favorite. Given the rash of injuries, it seems the Falcons - with Ryan and Turner especially - have taken the worst. McNabb will use what's available and be productive. Redman might...but it's nowhere near a gimme. With that the case, take the surer hand.

Predicted Outcome: Eagles 20, Falcons 14

Preview: Eagles (7-4) at Falcons (6-5)

The Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons will each be missing major offensive weapons for their important NFC tilt Sunday at the Georgia Dome, but that's not why a little-used backup will be getting the bulk of the pregame attention.

Philadelphia's Michael Vick makes his initial return to Atlanta after his prison sentence and suspension for dogfighting prematurely ended his time with the Falcons, but neither team can afford to be distracted from a game with major postseason implications.

Vick's rocky six-year stint with Atlanta ended in infamy before the 2007 season, when the versatile quarterback pleaded guilty to federal felony charges for his role in a dogfighting ring, landing him in prison for nearly two years.

He was reinstated in time for Week 3 this season, and the Eagles signed the veteran - presumably to add a new dimension to their offense. But Vick has seen little action behind Donovan McNabb, carrying 15 times all season for 65 yards and attempting nine passes, completing three for six yards.

It's unclear how the fans will respond at his former home, where he led the Falcons to the NFC title game after the 2004 season but mostly failed to live up to expectations after Atlanta selected him first overall in the 2001 draft.

"I don't really know what's going to happen," Vick said Wednesday. "I know I still enjoy the city. I'll never forget the fans. I'll always be true to them. Who knows? I look forward to going back and being in that stadium. That's going to be like a dream come true, even though I'm on the opposite side."

After stumbling following Vick's departure, the Falcons (6-5) found a new franchise quarterback last season, when Matt Ryan led them back to the postseason and was named the NFL's top offensive rookie. But Ryan will miss Sunday's game due to a turf toe injury.

That leaves Chris Redman to start after the veteran backup led the team to a comeback victory last Sunday against Tampa Bay.

After replacing Ryan in the first quarter, Redman was 23 of 41 for 243 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning touchdown pass to Roddy White on fourth down in the final minute of the 20-17 win as Atlanta bounced back after dropping four of its previous five.

"Chris has got a lot of confidence in his ability and when he has had an opportunity to play in this league he has played effectively," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. "I don't anticipate there is going to be a significant dropoff in the effectiveness of our offense."

There may be, however, if star running back Michael Turner cannot play. Turner, who aggravated an ankle sprain that kept him out of a Nov. 22 loss to the New York Giants, missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, raising doubts that he'll be ready for Sunday.

Starting offensive linemen Harvey Dahl (ankle) and Sam Baker (elbow) also missed practice time this week.

"The team needs me out there. We need everybody out there," Turner said. "If I can go out there and give it some type of effort, I'll suit up and go. I have no regrets about that."

The game is especially vital for Atlanta because the Falcons will meet one of the teams they're chasing for a wild-card spot in the NFC. With virtually no hope of catching unbeaten New Orleans in the division, Atlanta will have to gain ground on Philadelphia or Green Bay, the teams one game ahead in postseason position.

The Eagles (7-4) have been helped by back-to-back victories, although neither win was comfortable. They needed to erase a fourth-quarter deficit in a 24-20 win at Chicago on Nov. 22, then did the same in a 27-24 home win over Washington last Sunday, with David Akers' field goal with 1:48 remaining providing the winning margin.

Running back Brian Westbrook missed both games following his second concussion of the season, and he has been ruled out of this week's contest. Leading receiver DeSean Jackson was ruled out on Friday after suffering a concussion against Washington.

That could mean a bigger role for players like rookie receiver Jeremy Maclin and tight end Brent Celek, who has a career-high 601 receiving yards and got a six-year contract extension Tuesday. Celek, though, is nursing a sprained thumb.

"We have some guys that can make plays for us and you just want to give them opportunities to do that," McNabb said. "Obviously, (Jackson) is a big-time talent and a guy that has just kind of came into his own this year. We just want to spread it around and give guys opportunities to make plays for us."

Westbrook was an offensive force for Philadelphia in a 27-14 home win over the Falcons last season, running for 167 yards and two touchdowns on Oct. 26, 2008. This time, Atlanta will try to slow down rookie LeSean McCoy, who has filled in for Westbrook with 175 rushing yards over the last two games.

Including two postseason victories, the Eagles have won six of seven against Atlanta, but they lost 14-10 in their most recent visit to the Georgia Dome on Sept. 12, 2005.

Atlanta is 5-0 at home this season and has won eight straight there dating to last year. The team will have a new kicker this week after releasing Jason Elam and replacing him with Matt Bryant.

NFL Preview - Tampa Bay (1-10) at Carolina (4-7)

NFL Preview - Tampa Bay (1-10) at Carolina (4-7)

NFL Preview - Tampa Bay (1-10) at Carolina (4-7)

While Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox has stuck with Jake Delhomme all season despite the quarterback's struggles, an injury may finally be forcing his hand.

Delhomme could be a spectator when Carolina hosts the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Bank of America Stadium this Sunday because of a broken finger suffered on his right throwing hand last weekend.

Delhomme suffered the injury in a 17-6 loss to the New York Jets, when he completed 14-of-34 pass attempts and was picked off three times prior to getting hurt late in the fourth quarter. He added another pick after the injury to give him 18 interceptions on the season, though just five of those have come in the last five games. That total is tied for the second-most in the league.

Delhomme was unable to go when the Panthers reconvened for practice on Wednesday, with backup Matt Moore instead taking the reps with the first team. Moore would be in line for his first start since December 30, 2007 if Delhomme can't go on Sunday.

Interestingly, that start by Moore was a 31-23 victory over the Buccaneers in which he threw for 174 yards on 15-of-24 passing with two touchdowns and an interception.

DeAngelo Williams ran for two scores in that game, as the Panthers ran the ball 37 times to Moore's 24 pass attempts. That would likely be the case again this weekend, though both Williams (ankle) and fellow back Jonathan Stewart (Achilles) missed practice time this week. Fullback Brad Hoover (ankle) was also out.

Williams has yet to miss a game this season, but could be a game-time decision on Sunday. Stewart, meanwhile, has been in-and-out of practice all year due to his ailment, but has also played in all 11 games and is expected to take part in this contest.

That will be key for Carolina (4-7), which totaled 267 rushing yards in a 28-21 victory over Tampa Bay on October 18. Williams had 152 of those and scored twice, including the game-winning touchdown with 29 seconds left that capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive that featured 15 run plays and ate up 8:04 of clock.

That loss to Carolina was part of Tampa Bay's season-opening seven-game slide that finally ended with a home win over Green Bay on November 8. The Buccaneers (1-10) have lost three in a row since and are coming off a heart- breaking 20-17 loss in the final minutes to the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday.

Quarterback Josh Freeman completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Cadillac Williams early in the third quarter to give the Bucs a 17-10 lead, and Tampa Bay entered the fourth holding a four-point advantage.

Tampa head coach Raheem Morris took a gamble in the final quarter, sending kicker Connor Barth out for a 51-yard field goal late in the game. Barth missed and the Falcons got the ball back with 2:30 to play.

Atlanta drove deep into Tampa Bay territory and found itself with a first down at the Bucs' five-yard line thanks to a defensive holding call on cornerback Derrick Roberson. On fourth down, Falcons quarterback Chris Redman found receiver Roddy White for a touchdown with 23 seconds to play.

The setback was Tampa Bay's 14th in its last 15 games, and the club fell to 0-5 on the road this season.

SERIES HISTORY

Carolina has a 11-7 lead in its all time series with Tampa Bay, including a 28-21 win at Raymond James Stadium in Week 6. The teams embarked on a conventional home-and-home split last season, with the Buccaneers coming up 27-3 home winners in Week 6 of last year, and the Panthers returning the favor with a 38-23 primetime win in Charlotte during Week 14. Tampa Bay last won in Charlotte in 2007. The Panthers will be gunning for their first home-and-home sweep of the Bucs since 2006.

Fox is 10-5 versus the Buccaneers as a head coach, while Morris is 0-1 against both Fox and the Panthers as a head man.

WHEN THE BUCCANEERS HAVE THE BALL

Freeman (793 passing yards, 7 TD, 5 INT) bounced back from a four-turnover game versus New Orleans two weekends ago to throw for 250 yards and two touchdowns versus the Falcons. He also connected on a 42-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Bryant, who was playing in his second straight game after missing two in a row with a nagging knee injury. Bryant (22 receptions, 3 TD) ended with three catches for 91 yards, and Tampa Bay hopes that he can build some chemistry with Freeman to improve upon the team's 29th-ranked offense (274.8 yards per game). Tight end Kellen Winslow (54 receptions, 5 TD) added seven receptions for 81 yards, giving him 23 catches in four games since Freeman became the starter. Wide receiver Michael Clayton (14 receptions, 1 TD) suffered a knee injury on the first play of the Atlanta game and will be inactive this week. That could mean more time for wideouts Sammie Stroughter (24 receptions, 1 TD) and Maurice Stovall (14 receptions, 1 TD). Stroughter made three catches and returned a kickoff 97 yards for a score versus the Panthers in October. Cadillac Williams (480 rushing yards, 3 TD) ended with 30 yards on 10 carries last weekend and Derrick Ward (272 rushing yards, 1 TD) added 29 yards on 13 attempts for the Bucs, who rank 23rd in the NFL with 98.2 yards per game on the ground.

Freeman will get his first look at the Panthers' secondary this weekend, as it was now-backup Josh Johnson who started that October meeting. Carolina is allowing just 181.3 yards per game through the air, which ranks third in the NFL. The Panthers faced another rookie quarterback in the Jets' Mark Sanchez last weekend, holding him to just 154 yards on 13-of-17 passing. New York did post 139 yards rushing against the Panthers, including 75 on 25 carries by Thomas Jones. Carolina ranks 26th in the NFL in run defense, yielding 131.5 yards per game. The Panthers attempted to mob Sanchez, as four players were credited with getting a piece of the quarterback. Defensive end Tyler Brayton (38 tackles, 4 sacks) led the way with 1 1/2 sacks, while ends Julius Peppers (33 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 1 INT) and Everette Brown (15 tackles, 1.5 sacks) and defensive tackle Damione Lewis (26 tackles) were credited with a half-sack each. Peppers ranks 11th in the NFL in sacks and has 14 1/2 in 14 meetings with Tampa Bay, while Lewis had a sack and forced fumble in his last home game versus the Bucs. Cornerback Chris Gamble (39 tackles, 2 INT) had an interception versus the Jets, Carolina's 12th of the season. Linebacker Jon Beason (96 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT) led the Panthers with 17 tackles, while linebacker James Anderson (30 tackles) added 10.

WHEN THE PANTHERS HAVE THE BALL

Even if Delhomme (2015 passing yards, 8 TD) is able to play this Sunday, it is likely the Panthers will go run heavy, as they probably will if Moore starts. That also depends on how lingering injuries hold up for DeAngelo Williams and Stewart. Williams (1022 rushing yards, 7 TD) was held to just 40 yards on 16 carries against the Jets, while Stewart (544 rushing yards, 6 TD) had 35 yards on nine run attempts. Still, Carolina ranks fourth in the NFL with 151.5 rushing yards per game. However, the team has had trouble translating that into points, as Carolina is scoring just 18.1 points per game, 23rd in the league. That hasn't been the case versus Tampa Bay, as Williams has 459 yards and six touchdowns in his past three games versus the Bucs and Stewart has 225 yards and three scores in his last two against them. Tight end Dante Rosario (20 receptions, 2 TD) had four catches for a team-best 62 yards last weekend, while wideout Dwayne Jarrett (12 receptions) added two catches for 43 yards. He did have a 28-yard touchdown catch wiped out on offensive pass interference, while wide receiver Steve Smith (46 receptions, 4 TD), who ended with one catch for five yards versus the Jets, appeared to make a 10-yard scoring reception that was overruled on video replay due to lost possession.

Tampa Bay is yielding 370.9 yards (26th overall) and 28.5 points (31st overall) per game, but it did hold Atlanta under both of those marks last weekend. The Falcons managed just 20 points and 297 yards versus Tampa Bay, which registered six sacks in the loss. Defensive end Stylez White (31 tackles, 5.5 sacks) led the way with 2 1/2 sacks and fellow end Tim Crowder (28 tackles, 2.5 sacks) added a sack-and-a-half. Corner Ronde Barber (49 tackles, 2 sacks) and linebacker Quincy Black (60 tackles, 1 INT) also had a sack each. Black ended with 10 tackles versus the Falcons, while linebacker Barrett Ruud (97 tackles, 1 INT) led the way with 11 stops and forced a fumble that Crowder recovered. Ruud and safety Tanard Jackson (42 tackles, 3 INT) both had interceptions the last time the Buccaneers faced the Panthers, with Jackson taking his 26 yards for a touchdown. Jackson has three picks in his last six games, taking two of those back for scores. Tampa Bay hopes to have corner Aqib Talib (39 tackles, 5 INT) for this game after he left last weekend's contest in the fourth quarter when aggravating a hamstring injury. The Bucs lost some secondary depth earlier this weekend, when corner Torrie Cox was placed on injured reserve because of a hip ailment.

FANTASY FOCUS

Freeman has been giving fantasy owners of the future some hope for his 2010 season, and he could be a deep sleeper candidate given the matchup. Though the Panthers have good numbers against the pass, part of that is because they can't stop the run. That could mean Cadillac Williams is set for a big game, but the Buccaneers have had trouble establishing the run all year. While there are no sure bets on Tampa Bay, Freeman, Williams and Bryant are sleeper picks. Barth has shown good range and Morris obviously will allow him to try long field goals, so he could actually be the Bucs' best fantasy weapon this weekend.

DeAngelo Williams and Stewart appear to be line for a lot of work this weekend, though Williams owners will need to monitor his injury on Sunday. Either way, Stewart could end up out-producing Williams if the latter's ankle injury acts up. Even if he was healthy, Delhomme has not fantasy worthy and Moore is not a better option. That obviously hurts Smith and fellow wideout Muhsin Muhammad's value. Carolina's defense is a risky play, even against a Tampa Bay offense.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

Many thought that the Panthers would be in contention for a division title at this point of the season, but injuries and poor play have derailed that train. Instead, the Panthers are in the same boat as the Buccaneers, looking towards 2010. That makes this a tough game to predict, especially with the uncertain ailments surrounding Delhomme and DeAngelo Williams. That will likely make this another close contest between the NFC South bottom-feeders, though the Panthers will likely use their advantage in running the ball to pull out another close one.

Predicted Outcome: Panthers 17, Buccaneers 13

Preview: Buccaneers (1-10) at Panthers (4-7)

Date: December 06, 2009 1:00 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers changed quarterbacks a month ago as their dismal season was already slipping away.

With their playoff possibilities quickly vanishing, the Carolina Panthers might be ready to do the same.

Jake Delhomme's broken finger may finally earn the veteran a spot on the bench, giving Matt Moore his first start in two years Sunday when the Panthers try to hand the Buccaneers an eighth straight road loss.

Carolina (4-7) won four of six after an 0-3 start, and some improved play from Delhomme helped fuel the turnaround. He threw seven interceptions during the Panthers' season-opening skid, but gave it away only six times during the next six games as the tailback tandem of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart put Carolina back in playoff contention.

The Panthers' postseason hopes are mostly gone after two more losses, though, and Delhomme might be as well. A week after Carolina fell 24-17 at home to Miami, Delhomme had his second four-interception game of the season in a 17-6 loss to the New York Jets.

"It wasn't good," said Delhomme, tied for second in the NFL with 18 interceptions. "There's no other way to put it. We didn't run it well. We certainly didn't throw it well."

The last interception came after banging hands with linebacker Calvin Pace, a collision that also resulted in Delhomme breaking a finger on his right hand. Though coach John Fox was noncommittal Wednesday on which quarterback would play against the Buccaneers (1-10), all signs point to Moore making his first start since Dec. 30, 2007, at Tampa Bay, where he threw two touchdowns in a 31-23 Panthers win.

"I think this is a great opportunity for Matt,' said receiver Muhsin Muhammad, who hasn't caught a touchdown since Dec. 28. "Obviously, we won't do a lot of the things that Jake does well, but we'll do the things that Matt does well.'

Delhomme threw two interceptions when the Panthers played in Tampa on Oct. 18, one of which was returned by Tanard Jackson to tie the score at 21-all with 8:33 to play.

Carolina wasn't denied on its next possession, however, capping an 80-yard drive with Williams' second touchdown run to secure a 28-21 win. Williams finished with 152 yards and Stewart had 110, his lone 100-yard effort this season.

Rookie Josh Freeman saw some time in the Bucs' next game, and took over the starting job from Josh Johnson on Nov. 8 against Green Bay, throwing three TDs and leading Tampa Bay to a stunning 38-28 upset.

Freeman struggled in losses to Miami and New Orleans, but had the best game of his brief career Sunday at Atlanta. The 17th overall pick was 20 of 29 for 250 yards and two touchdowns, nearly piloting another upset before a last-second score allowed the Falcons to escape with a 20-17 win.

"I think he's starting to develop into what we all think he can be,' rookie coach Raheem Morris said. "He's shown nothing but good things. He had the one week where he kind of backed off ... but he's getting better and better every week.'

Morris took over defensive playcalling duties from coordinator Jim Bates after the loss to the Saints, saying it was his responsibility to fix a defense that's allowed the second-most points in the NFL and is 26th in yards allowed (370.9 per game).

The improvement was noticeable, as the Bucs yielded a season-low 75 yards on the ground, allowed its second-fewest total yards (297) in a game, and matched a season best with six sacks.

While Freeman is learning on the job, it appears Morris is as well. The league's second-youngest coach drew criticism after running a fake punt that cost Tampa Bay field position early in the fourth quarter, then later opting to attempt a 51-yard field goal - Connor Barth missed - rather than punting with under three minutes to go.

"We were a 1-9 football team," Morris said. "I think you've got to teach this team how to insert a dagger in somebody and win the game. That's part of the learning curve, part of what we're going through.'

Williams had a career-high 186 rushing yards and two TDs in Carolina's 38-23 home win over the Bucs on Dec. 8.

Tampa Bay has not had an individual 100-yard rusher in 21 straight games - the longest active streak in football.
