Cougars skipping practice today in favor of families

Kickoff nears, but Mendenhall not worried about day off

By MARK ANDERSON
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Brigham Young will do something highly unusual so close to a bowl game kickoff -- take a day off.

Because today is Sunday and BYU is not only a Mormon institution, but arguably THE Mormon institution, the No. 15 Cougars (10-2) will attend church and spend time with family rather than prepare for No. 16 Oregon State (8-4).

The teams play in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Sam Boyd Stadium.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall downplayed any possible disadvantage from not practicing.

"It's a unique (school), and the best thing we can be doing is representing our faith and doing the things we know are right," Mendenhall said.

"We have 41 married players on our team, so it's great for them to be with their wives."

? NOT EXACTLY PASADENA -- Oregon State came four points short of playing in the Rose Bowl, losing the regular-season finale at rival Oregon, 37-33

One of coach Mike Riley's greatest challenges is firing up his team after such a close call. In recent years, there are countless examples of bowl teams playing uninspired because their bowl assignment was such a big letdown.

"We addressed it right way," Riley said. "There's no way you're not going to be disappointed. It's a good thing to be disappointed. We committed so much, the team did, to winning all year and then you get to that chance.

"Now it will show how tough they are, to do what they've done all year, to come back and play our best game."

? MORE TICKETS -- The game technically is a sellout, but a small number of tickets will go on sale at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the stadium's south box office.

BYU star tight end attracts defenders, not much publicity

BYU star tight end attracts defenders, not much publicity

By MARK ANDERSON
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Brigham Young's Bronco Mendenhall began his collegiate coaching career in 1989, spending time at places such as Oregon State, Louisiana Tech and New Mexico before joining the Cougars in 2003 as defensive coordinator.

The fifth-year head coach never has seen a tight end double-teamed as much as BYU senior Dennis Pitta this season. "No, not in my coaching career," Mendenhall said.

BYU quarterback Max Hall and tailback Harvey Unga receive more publicity, yet when asked throughout the season which Cougar was most important to defend, Mountain West Conference coaches consistently named Pitta.

Oregon State coach Mike Riley won't underrate him, either, so don't be shocked if the No. 16 Beavers (8-4) throw their share of double teams at Pitta when they play No. 15 BYU (10-2) at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium.

"I think you have to at times be able to double him," Riley said. "You can't always do it. You're going to have to at times go after the quarterback with some pressure, so somebody's going to have to cover him one-on-one once in a while."

There's a good reason opposing defensive coordinators want to know where Pitta is on the field. At 6 feet 5 inches, 248 pounds, he has tight end size but can catch passes like a wide receiver.

Because of the presence of wide receiver Austin Collie, now catching passes from Indianapolis Colts star Peyton Manning, Pitta faced much more single coverage last season. He caught 83 passes for 1,083 yards and six touchdowns.

When Collie left BYU early for the NFL, Pitta knew defenses would gear up to stop him. His suspicions were confirmed -- his numbers are down to 57 receptions for 784 yards and seven TDs.

The one team, Air Force, that didn't double team him paid the price. Pitta caught nine passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-21 victory.

"It's always frustrating (facing double teams), especially when your production kind of drops off from the year before," Pitta said. "But I understand my role on this team, and a lot of times that's pulling coverage from other guys. It's not something you can get upset about because it's a team game. I have to be a team player, and that's certainly what I am."

At least he hasn't been hurt with postseason honors. Pitta was named a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and Walter Camp, a second-teamer by The Associated Press and a third-teamer by Sporting News.

"I'm humbled by it and certainly grateful," Pitta said. "It's something that I'll be able to look back on and really cherish here."

Cougars, Beavers poised to light up Las Vegas tonight

High-powered offenses hook up in bowl game

By MARK ANDERSON
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Dennis Pitta admits Brigham Young was "a little flat" in last year's bowl appearance in Las Vegas, a 31-21 loss to Arizona.

But the Cougars senior tight end insists tonight's game will be a different story.

No. 15 BYU (10-2) faces 16th-ranked Oregon State (8-4) in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas at 5 p.m. before a sellout crowd at Sam Boyd Stadium.

"If you can't get excited for a game like that," Pitta said, "then you probably shouldn't be playing this game."

The bowl features two ranked teams for the first time in its 18-year history and might be the best matchup outside of the Bowl Championship Series games.

CBSSports.com ranks Las Vegas as the third-best bowl, behind only the national championship at No. 1 and the Fiesta Bowl.

Tonight's game has the trappings of an offensive showcase.

Cougars quarterback Max Hall has completed 67.5 percent of his passes for 3,368 yards and 30 touchdowns. Oregon State's Sean Canfield has passed for 3,103 yards and 21 TDs with 70 percent completion rate.

Canfield said he isn't interested in engaging in a passing duel with Hall.

"I just want to win the football game," the Beavers' senior quarterback said. "I think there's nothing better than sharing a win with a bunch of teammates."

Both quarterbacks are surrounded by plenty of talent.

Hall's supporting cast includes tailback Harvey Unga (1,016 yards, 10 touchdowns) and Pitta (57 receptions, 784 yards, seven touchdowns).

Canfield has the Rodgers brothers. Jacquizz Rodgers, one of the country's top tailbacks, has rushed for 1,377 yards and 20 touchdowns. Wide receiver James Rodgers has 87 catches for 1,004 yards and nine touchdowns.

Besides the potential wow factor, tonight's game carries important implications for both programs.

An Oregon State victory over the Cougars would ensure the Beavers their fourth consecutive Top 25 finish, ex- tending a school record.

"I like that for the identity of this group," Oregon State coach Mike Riley said. "In order to have that, we have to win. For the identity and the exclamation point on this 2009 team, I think it's huge."

A BYU victory could give the Cougars -- making their fifth consecutive appearance in this game -- their first top-10 finish since 1996, when they wound up No. 5.

"If that does happen, you're talking about momentum for the program and continued respect and continued growth and progress," BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "I think that's something that every program would like."

Matchup compelling, if teams are up for it

Matchup compelling, if teams are up for it

Matchup compelling, if teams are up for it
You can define most college football bowl games by the roller coaster of your choice. Teams either arrive at the top of the first drop or have already plummeted to its base.

They are either excited enough to fly around the tracks at excessive speeds or content enough to glide leisurely along.

They either want to run through the opponent or the motions.

It's a point that strikes directly to today's MAACO Bowl Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium, which in Brigham Young against Oregon State offers not only the first between ranked teams in the bowl's history but arguably the best matchup of any postseason game this year outside the Bowl Championship Series world.

It has the makings of a terrific game, of one so closely contested that executive director Tina "Hugs" Kunzer-Murphy could wear out her arms embracing others afterward from sheer excitement.

That is, if both teams show up.

Mindset is everything when preparing for a bowl, and it might not be until well into the first quarter when it becomes apparent how hard each team worked since the matchup was announced.

You have Oregon State, which less than three weeks ago stood 60 minutes from its first Rose Bowl since 1965, whose players at that point were thinking about Las Vegas as much as they were spring practice.

The Beavers lost to Oregon, 37-33. Roses were replaced with casinos, BCS with MAACO, Jan. 1 with Dec. 22, Lawry's Beef Bowl with Outback Buffet Bowl, 90,000 fans for what officials say could be the lowest attended Las Vegas Bowl in five years, Granddaddy of Them All with one of many.

"It's a challenge to get over a loss to our rival and all the ramifications that came with it, but that also means a great opportunity for us to grow and show discipline and put our best effort forward and play a tough team and win a game," Beavers coach Mike Riley said. "That would be a great sign for our guys. I have a lot of faith we will be ready. I have seen no sign of any kind it won't be that way."

You have BYU, which is making its fifth straight Las Vegas bowl appearance, knows the way to Sam Boyd Stadium better than parking attendants who work it, and made it known during the season it wouldn't mind spending the holidays somewhere other than its second home.

But that tone changed as things wound to a close. The Cougars and their coach learned a valuable lesson last season, one that ended with losses to rival Utah and then Arizona here in the bowl.

BYU has come to understand that continuing to grow a program's national prominence is a process, that while it would prefer to jump from phase 1 to 4 without having to experience 2 and 3, it's not practicable for most non-BCS teams.

"Going into last year, we had been 11-2 two straight seasons and hadn't lost a conference game those years and had the nation's longest winning streak twice, and it was like, 'Where else do you go except 13-0 and playing in January?" BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "That was my fault. I pushed the timetable with our team. I learned a lot from that about defining what is acceptable in terms of number of wins.

"This year, we just talked about playing their best, and we've had a lot more fun. I've had more fun. Would it be fun to play a bowl in another place and have new experiences for our players? Certainly. But this time, it was more about whom we would play than where.

"Our players unanimously wanted to go where the best opponent was. They wanted to be here instead of having to be or assigned to be, which a year ago (against Arizona) is basically how we played and how I coached."

With that miracle, this being the first time in five years a college football coach in Las Vegas has taken blame for anything, I suspect BYU will expend the maximum effort today.

Riley is also too good a coach not to have his team focused on the opportunity at hand instead of one it missed Dec. 3.

The game, on paper, is one that could reach the top of that first loop and never drop, one that could cause Kunzer-Murphy to set a personal record in hugs.

That is, if both teams show up.

We ♥ BYU in bowl game

We ♥ BYU in bowl game

We ♥ BYU in bowl game
The average attendance has been more than 40,000, who spent $14.2 million in 2008

Las Vegas may not be at the top of the list of weekend getaways or vacation hot spots for BYU fans, but throw in a football bowl game and get out of the way.

The Cougars will play today in their fifth consecutive bowl game at Sam Boyd Stadium ? this one called the Maaco Bowl ? and their fans may add another notch to their own championship belt: In the 18-year history of the bowl game, BYU followers have contributed to the four most profitable ones. Today may make No. 5.

Largely because of the money BYU fans leave behind, the bowl is expected to break the $150 million mark in economic impact over the bowl?s history, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

?When BYU comes in here, it means it?s a sellout,? authority spokesman Vince Alberta said. ?They bring fans who would otherwise not be in Las Vegas, and they are spending money.?

Indeed, the Las Vegas Bowl has sold out for four consecutive years. Alberta estimated that the total economic impact for the area would be right around last year?s figure of $14.2 million.

?We?ve seen consistent numbers ? and they?ve been consistently great,? Alberta said. ?Since BYU has been in the bowl, it?s the highest economic stimulus we?ve ever had.?

Before BYU became a fixture in the bowl game, the Las Vegas Bowl struggled financially. The average attendance from 2001-04 was just more than 22,000. Those games generated about $9.3 million for Las Vegas, plus what was spent gambling.

Since 2005 ? with BYU in town ? the average economic impact has been $13.6 million annually. The attendance at Sam Boyd Stadium has eclipsed 40,000 each year.

?Five years ago, this bowl game was on the verge of not meeting its attendance requirements,? BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. ?If you look at the partnership, which is what it has been with BYU, it?s been sold out ever since then. That?s because of BYU.?

Last year?s game between Arizona and BYU attracted about 32,700 attendees from out of town. For today?s game, about 32,000 will be from out of town.

By the end of today, more than 300,000 out-of-town fans will have seen Las Vegas Bowl games.

?All that adds up to a very winning combination to, ultimately, the residents of Southern Nevada because it?s helping the economy and creating jobs,? Alberta said.

He said the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas is one event that has made Las Vegas more popular in December than it had been in previous years.

The others: the National Finals Rodeo, NASCAR Champions Week and the Rock ?n? Roll Las Vegas Marathon.

?Historically, there were hotels that either shut down their showrooms or shut down parts of their facility for maintenance,? Alberta said. ?Now, December is a busy month for the destination.?

Motivation runs high for both BYU and Oregon State

Motivation runs high for both BYU and Oregon State

Motivation runs high for both BYU and Oregon State

For BYU, tonight's MAACO Las Vegas Bowl is a chance to gain more national prominence and prove last year's loss in the same bowl was a fluke.

For Oregon State, it's an opportunity to make amends for its devastating regular season-ending defeat to rival Oregon.

Both the Cougars and the Beavers feel like they still have much to prove heading into tonight's 5 p.m. game Sam Boyd Stadium.

"It's a really important game to define the identity of this 2009 team," Oregon State senior linebacker Keaton Kristick said. "This is our last opportunity together and we've got to make the most of it."

No. 16 Oregon State (8-4) will have to do it against a tough opponent in No. 15 BYU (10-2). It's the first time in the 18-year history of the Las Vegas Bowl that both teams are ranked.

Both teams enter with a bad taste in their mouths. The Beavers were one game away from winning the Pac-10 Conference and advancing to the Rose Bowl, but lost to the Oregon Ducks, 37-33, in their regular-season finale.

"There's no room for babies in this deal," Oregon State coach Mike Riley said. "We lost a game, and now we've got to win the next one."

BYU's motivation is a bit more complex. The Cougars, who are in the Las Vegas Bowl for the fifth straight year, came into last year's game against Arizona with a lack of excitement and lost, 31-21.

But BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall and his players said they learned from last year's disappointment. This time around, the Cougars are excited to be in Las Vegas.

"Quite bluntly: I'm not sure I could say that a year ago," Mendenhall said. "I preached to our team last year ? and incorrectly on my part as a young na?ve head coach after being 11-2 two years in a row without losing a conference game ? that it was undefeated or bust. That was a mistake."

The Cougars have already clinched their fourth-straight 10-win season. With that kind of success, BYU players say they feel slighted when the program isn't considered a national powerhouse.

"I think we're trying to continually get traction and ground in moving toward national prominence and gaining the recognition we feel our team is worthy of," BYU senior linebacker Matt Bauman said.

Senior quarterbacks with storied careers will be appearing in their final game for both teams. Oregon State's Sean Canfield earned first-team All Pac-10 honors this season after passing for more than 3,000 yards.

BYU's Max Hall is the school's all-time leader in wins with 31.

"We want to win this game obviously for the seniors, who want to end on the right foot," BYU senior tight end Dennis Pitta said. "But also for the future of this program in getting momentum and gaining more respect."

While BYU will be fighting for national notoriety, Oregon State just wants to forget about its last game.

"The stakes were so high and we were very disappointed for a few days after the game," Canfield said. "But with that said, we've moved on and we're more than excited to play a great opponent like BYU."

BYU right at home in Las Vegas

BYU right at home in Las Vegas

BYU right at home in Las Vegas

This is easily the best of the early bowl conflicts, ranking 8th on our radar, with two Top 25 teams. This is BYU?s fifth straight Las Vegas Bowl, which seemingly isn?t that big a problem, since the Mormons have a large population in the southern part of Nevada. Maybe in a different economy, the Cougars (10-2, 5-7 ATS) might be inclined to look at another site, but given the choice, Vegas made the most sense.

BYU?s senior class has won 10 or more games for the fourth year in a row. Quarterback Max Hall directs the 13th best pass attack in the land at 299.6 yards per game. Coach Bronco Mendenhall is an Oregon State alumnus and former defensive coordinator with the Beavers and hopes for running back Harvey Unga continued health. Slowed with severely injured hamstring in fall camp, only recently has Unga gone full tilt like he did against Utah in gaining 116 yards. Opposing coaches agree, the Cougars are much harder to prepare for with a healthy Unga. BYU is 4-13 ATS after the first month of the season the last two years.

Oregon State (8-4, 7-4-1 ATS) was oh so close to making first Rose Bowl appearance in 46 years, but came up short to rival Oregon in pivotal contest. A justifiable question is the Beavers mental state after falling to the Ducks. In a similar scenario a year ago, Oregon State bounced back and won the Sun Bowl, however this year they have nine fewer days to prepare, making it harder to gauge response time.

Sean Canfield closed career with a brilliant senior campaign (16th passing offense), completing a school-record 70 percent of his passes. The Rodgers brothers, Quizz and James, will test BYU?s speed on the defensive perimeter. Oregon State is 13-4 ATS when playing with two weeks or more of rest under coach Mike Riley.

BYU opened as early 1.5-point favorites and were swiftly turned around to underdogs. The Cougars are 4-2 and 3-3 ATS vs other bowl teams, with Oregon State 3-4 and 4-3 ATS. The BYU bowl history is pretty pathetic at 9-17-1 SU and 9-16-1 ATS, including 6-9 ATS as underdogs. The Beavers are 8-5 SU and 5-3 ATS (5-0 and 4-1 ATS under Riley), with 5-3 spread record as favorites. Since the bowl committee established an affiliation with the Mountain West, the conference is 6-6 and 5-6-1 ATS.

Bookmaker.com has Oregon State now posted as 2.5-point favorites, with total having sunk two points to 58.5. Both teams were excellent away from home, with the eager Beavers 4-2 and 5-1 ATS and the feisty Cougars 6-0 and 4-2 ATS, winning by over 26 points a game.

Oregon State is 9-2 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record over the last two seasons and the total might be an indicator of outcome since coach Riley?s team is 7-1 ATS when they score 28 or more points.

This is 8:00 Eastern start on ESPN and the favorite in a BYU bowl game is on 7-0 and 5-2 ATS run.

Power Line ? Oregon State by 6

BYU, Oregon State seek redemption in Vegas bowl

BYU, Oregon State seek redemption in Vegas bowl

BYU, Oregon State seek redemption in Vegas bowl

LAS VEGAS (AP) -No. 15 BYU and No. 16 Oregon State enter the Las Vegas Bowl with a chance to erase disappointing memories, one much more recent than the other.

The Beavers (8-4) were a victory away from the Rose Bowl earlier this month, but a loss to rival Oregon left them relegated to one of the first bowl games of the postseason.

The Cougars (10-2) will make their fifth consecutive the Las Vegas Bowl appearance Tuesday night, hoping they can atone for their last.

Oregon State coach Mike Riley said Monday that players enjoy second chances.

``It starts with pride,'' Riley said. ``When football players start talking about redemption and they talk about the next opportunity, it's because they've invested so much.''

Oregon State started the season trying to replace seven players who were drafted off last year's team. Riley said these Beavers created a new identity.

``Players - these older players in particular - understand what an identity of a team is,'' he said.

A loss to Oregon kept the Beavers out of the BCS, so Oregon State will try to extend its five-game bowl winning streak against BYU.

Cougars coach Bronco Mendenhall can sympathize with his opponent's position.

``I understand very clearly what Oregon State's going through,'' he said.

After finishing their regular season last year with a 48-24 loss at Utah, the Cougars went on to lose 31-21 to Arizona in their fourth straight trip to Sin City.

``That's difficult to get over,'' he said. ``I think I would handle it better if that were to happen again.''

Mendenhall says his team takes a better attitude into the Las Vegas Bowl this season. A win against Oregon State could perhaps boost BYU to a top-10 finish.

Mendenhall said the motivation of redemption is universal.

``It's just for people living on this planet,'' he said. ``You go through ups and downs - I don't think anyone's satisfied when you're down to stay down.''

Both teams rank in the top-30 in the country in total offense, featuring balanced attacks guided by senior quarterbacks.

For a school that has a tradition of great passers, Max Hall will leave BYU as one of its most prolific passers. Hall ranks third in the country in passer efficiency rating (160.9), with 3,368 yards and 30 touchdown passes.

Oregon State's Sean Canfield has had an outstanding final season with little fanfare. He leads the Pac-10 in passer rating (148.3) and has thrown for 3,103 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Hall's top weapons are tight end Dennis Pitt, a second-team All-American, and tailback Harvey Unga, who ran for 1,016 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Rodgers brothers handle much of the Beavers' offense. Tailback Jacquizz Rodgers was third in the Pac-10 with 1,377 yards rushing. Flanker James Rodgers led the Pac-10 in yards receiving (1,004) and receptions (87).

Expect plenty of points and two teams looking for redemption.

``In this case for Oregon State, and for us a year ago, you would like to have another chance to play better and celebrate and feel good about yourself and your team,'' Mendenhall said. ``When things don't go well, it hurts.''

No. 16 Beavers, No. 15 Cougars are unfamiliar foes

No. 16 Beavers, No. 15 Cougars are unfamiliar foes

No. 16 Beavers, No. 15 Cougars are unfamiliar foes

Oregon State coach Mike Riley's message to his players has been straight forward: The Beavers can't let the disappointment of the recent past creep into Las Vegas Bowl.

Oregon State was one win away from playing in the Rose Bowl, but lost to rival Oregon in a Civil War game that decided the Pac-10 title. Now the Ducks are headed to Pasadena on New Year's Day.

``You can be defeated by your last loss. The same team can beat you twice based on your attitude. It almost becomes like a built-in excuse,'' Riley said. ``Like I told the team: We do not make excuses at Oregon State. So if we don't win this game it won't be about that, it will be about that game, that day.

``Basically, there's no room for babies here. This is a men's game and you've got to step up and do what you have done, every game, all year.''

The No. 16 Beavers (8-4) will play No. 15 BYU (10-2) at Sam Boyd Stadium on Dec. 22. It is the Oregon State's fourth consecutive bowl appearance, a school record.

The Cougars are playing in the Las Vegas Bowl for the fifth straight year. Last year BYU lost 31-21 to Arizona.

It will be the first time that two ranked teams have played in the bowl game, which is sponsored by Maaco.

It also will be the first postseason meeting between the Cougars and Beavers, who have played eight times in the regular season. The Beavers lead the series 5-3 lead.

Oregon State beat BYU 10-7 the last time the two teams met in 1986, when current coach Bronco Mendenhall was a starting safety and made four tackles against the Cougars.

Mendenhall was a graduate assistant at Oregon State in 1989, then returned as defensive line coach in 1995 and defensive coordinator in 1996. Riley joked that he should have grabbed Mendenhall for his own staff.

``I actually had a mini interview with him and obviously made a big mistake in not hiring him,'' Riley said. ``He is at, what I look at now, the perfect place; a great fit, and has a program and has basically established the values in his program that he wants and then you see the results of that success.''

Besides Mendenhall, the Cougars were sort of a mystery to the Beavers earlier this week before they started game-planning.

``I haven't looked at their roster, but I know that the team is one of the oldest teams in the nation,'' running back Jacquizz Rodgers said. ``As a team I know that they play physical and put forth a good effort. I know they're going to come out and play their hardest.''

Max Hall has 31 career victories, the most ever for a BYU quarterback in school history. Tight end Dennis Pitta, Hall's brother-in-law, has 57 receptions for 784 yards and seven touchdowns.

Harvey Unga, BYU's best career rusher with 3,384 yards, ran for 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

The Cougars finished second in the Mountain West Conference to unbeaten TCU. The team's only losses were to TCU and Florida State.

The Beavers, who finished in a three-way tie with Arizona and Stanford behind Oregon in the Pac-10, are led by the Rodgers brothers, sophomore Jacquizz and his older brother James.

Jacquizz, or Quizz, as he is known, ran for 1,377 yards and a school-record 20 TDs. He was ninth in the nation with 119.36 rushing yards a game. Quizz also caught a touchdown pass and threw another.

James Rodgers led Oregon State with 87 receptions, 1,007 yards and nine TDs this season.

Quarterback Sean Canfield led the conference with 3,103 passing yards, throwing for 21 touchdowns with just six interceptions.

Just as the Cougars were somewhat unfamiliar to the Beavers, the opposite was also true.

``I think it makes it more fun. There is certainly a level of uncertainty in what their personnel is like, how it will match up against our personnel. We know their coaches and we know how well they have done and how well their team will be prepared,'' Mendenhall said. ``Any time you play a team with no history in recent years, there is a little bit more of an edge that comes to the game, and a little bit more uncertainty.''

The Cougars haven't defeated the Beavers since 1978, when they won 10-6 in Corvallis.

Oregon State is on a five-game postseason win streak that started with a victory over New Mexico in the 2003 Las Vegas Bowl.

GAME NOTES: Heading back to the Las Vegas Bowl for the fifth straight year, the BYU Cougars try their chances this time around against the Oregon State Beavers on Tuesday evening at Sam Boyd Stadium.

The Cougars, who lost to Arizona in this event a year ago by a score of 31-21, arrive in the postseason after putting together a 10-2 record and a 7-1 mark versus the rest of the Mountain West Conference. The only two setbacks for BYU this season came at home versus Florida State (54-28) in the third game of the season, and then a 38-7 setback against conference foe TCU in Provo.

"We look forward to the opportunity to play in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas and face Oregon State," said BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall of the upcoming opportunity. "I'm proud of what our seniors and our team have accomplished this year. I have a lot of respect and admiration for Mike Riley."

As for the Beavers, who are playing in a bowl game for the ninth time in the last 11 years, they had four defeats on the season, three of which were against nationally-ranked programs. OSU had a chance to claim the title in the Pac-10 Conference when it took on in-state rival Oregon in the regular-season finale, but the 113th Civil War was won by the Ducks by a scant 37-33 margin. The defeat snapped a four-game win streak for Oregon State and delivered the program to the Las Vegas Bowl for the second time, following a 55-14 triumph over New Mexico in the event back in 2003.

"This will be one of the more intriguing bowl games this year," OSU head coach Mike Riley said of the impending matchup. "There are many connections between Oregon State and BYU, of course coach Mendenhall played and coached for the Beavers, but there are other ties to both programs as well. This will be a great showcase for two of the best quarterbacks in the country on a national stage in Max Hall (BYU) and Sean Canfield (OSU). I'm very excited about playing BYU and it will be a tremendous challenge for our team."

In terms of postseason experience over the years, Oregon State has won eight of 12 matchups, the first of which was a 20-16 victory over Duke in the 1942 Rose Bowl. Last year, the Beavers won their fifth straight bowl with a 3-0 defensive struggle versus Pittsburgh.

On the other side BYU, which first appeared in a bowl game in 1974 when it bowed to Oklahoma State, 16-6, in the Fiesta Bowl, has a mark of 9-17-1 in the postseason. The squad won in this Las Vegas Bowl against both Oregon (38-8) and UCLA (17-16) in 2006 and 2007, respectively.

As far as the all-time series between these two teams is concerned, OSU holds a 5-3 edge over the Cougars, thanks in part to a 10-7 victory in Provo in the most recent meeting back in 1986.

When it comes to offense, the Beavers operate behind the one-two punch provided by brothers Jacquizz and James Rodgers. A semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Jacquizz is a devastating runner who gained 1,377 yards and registered 20 touchdowns on the ground this year. Jacquizz carried the ball a whopping 255 times, while the rest of the team was credited with a collective 158 totes.

Brother James has already set the OSU single-season record for all-purpose yards with 2,213 yards. This season, James has reeled in 87 catches for 1,004 yards and nine touchdowns, while 'Quizz is second on the unit with 74 grabs for 509 yards, leading to one score. The man getting the ball to the Rodgers brothers is Sean Canfield who connected on 70 percent of his pass attempts for 3,103 yards and 21 touchdowns. More importantly, Canfield threw a mere six interceptions in 406 attempts which means he rarely makes mistakes in the pocket.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Beavers are middle of the pack in terms of how much they allow opponents, permitting 23.4 points and 352.9 total yards per tilt. Keaton Kristick leads the team in total tackles (87) and was credited with seven and a half tackles for loss. One of the bigger problems for the team this season was trying to get a strong push at the line of scrimmage and get after quarterbacks as the Beavers averaged a mere 1.25 sacks per game to rank ninth in the conference and 106th nationally.

OSU's weak defense will probably play right into the hands of BYU's offense which was ranked 12th in the nation this season with 34.8 ppg. Named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week five times in 2009, quarterback Max Hall was built to take advantage of a defense like the one fielded by Oregon State. An All-MWC Second Teamer this season, Hall has thrown for 3,000 yards three times in his career and is second only to Ty Detmer on the school's all- time passing list.

Hall, who threw for 300 yards a league-record eight times this season, connected on 67.5 percent of his attempts for 3,368 yards and 30 touchdowns. However, there were times when Hall was prone to mistakes, tossing a total of 14 picks. However, when Hall was looking for Dennis Pitta, generally only good things happened as the senior tight end was named a finalist for the John Mackey Award as he led the nation in receptions at his position with 57 for 784 yards and seven touchdowns.

Leading the Cougars on defense is senior defensive end Jan Jorgensen, who was named to the All-MWC First Team as he started every game this season and ran his overall total to 51 in a row for the squad. With 10.5 tackles for loss Jorgensen now has a total of 44 such stops for his career, establishing a new Mountain West record in the process. However, even with the defensive end playing at the top of his game, the Cougars still ranked second-to-last in the league and 102nd in the country in TFLs per game (less than five).

Depending who which team sets the tempo in this contest, Hall will either ease into his attack or become desperate and make mistakes when the Cougars can ill afford them. If the Rodgers brothers take over the spotlight early on, assume that the Beavers will pick up the victory.

Predicted Outcome: Oregon State 41, BYU 34

Las Vegas Bowl preview

Las Vegas Bowl preview

Las Vegas Bowl preview
December 22, 2009

The college football bowl season is in full swing and gamblers have watched the underdogs post a 2-1 record, both straight up and against the spread, through the first three games. Delving into these games further, it?s apparent that some teams are hungrier than others and sometimes the more talented squad doesn?t always win. Wyoming (+300) and Middle Tennessee State (+150) aren?t used to bowling on a yearly basis but the two small-school programs captured outright victories against a pair of teams (Fresno State, Southern Mississippi) that have been regulars on the recent postseason circuit.

On Tuesday, bettors will face the aforementioned dilemma again when Brigham Young (10-2 SU, 5-6 ATS) and Oregon State (8-4 SU, 7-4 ATS) meet in the Las Vegas Bowl from Sam Boyd Stadium.

Even though the Cougars own the better record, the betting public believes the Beavers are the better squad in this matchup. However, some folks are questioning Oregon State?s drive for this game, considering it was a win away from going to the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately, the Beavers came up short in the Civil War to Oregon 37-33 on Dec. 3 and now they?re playing in Las Vegas, rather than Pasadena. Will the Beavers? talented club show up in Sin City or get caught up in the experience on the Strip?

Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have Oregon State listed as a three-point favorite, and the total is hovering between 58 and 59 points.

It?s easy to see why the public likes the Beavers, since they closed the year with a 7-1 record against the spread. Plus, bettors have often been faulted for falling in love with teams that boast great skilled position players and Oregon State has a great nucleus.

Quarterback Sean Canfield (21 TDs, 3,103 yards) was arguably the best quarterback in the Pac 10 this year and he?s been complimented by running back Jacquizz Rodgers (1,377 yards, 20 TDs). The pair was tabbed first-team all-Pac 10 selections on offense. Rodgers older brother, James, is no slouch either. The wide receiver led the Beavers with receptions (87), yards (1,007) and receiving touchdowns (9) this season.

The trio helped the Oregon State offense average 32.4 points per game this year. Another stat that sticks out with the Beavers is their ability to protect the football. The team only turned it over eight times, which is the best mark in the nation.

Another reason to back OSU on Tuesday is based off its success in bowl games under head coach Mike Riley. The Beavers are 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS during his tenure but keep in mind the last three postseason wins came by only a combined 11 points (1, 7, 3).

Before you run to the betting counter and hammer Oregon State, you should probably digest some information on BYU and its loyal faithful. Handicapper Dave Cokin explained, ?Oregon State should have decent representation on Tuesday, but make no mistake, the Beavers are the road team here. From a motivational point, I see a big edge for the Cougars. They consider this their game and want to atone for last year's defeat to Arizona in the Las Vegas Bowl.?

As Cokin mentioned, BYU has been no stranger to the desert. This will be the fifth straight year that the Cougars will play in the Las Vegas Bowl. The team has gone 2-2 during this stretch, which includes the loss to Arizona (21-31). In last year?s setback to the Wildcats, it?s fair to say that BYU fell into the trap that Oregon State faces this week. The Cougars lost to Utah 42-24 in their 2008 regular season finale, which carried over to the bowl loss.

This season, BYU edged Utah 26-23 in overtime on Nov. 28 behind quarterback Max Hall. The gun slinger has rung up 3,368 yards and 30 TDs while completing 67.5 percent of his passes. He?s had lapses at times though, evidenced by 14 interceptions and 20 sacks. Fortunately for Hall, he?s got a solid running back in Harvey Unga (1,016, 10 TDs), plus a nice safety outlet in tight end Dennis Pitta (57 catches, 784 yards).

The knock on Bronco Mendenhall and his troops this year has been their defense against quality opponents. Florida State destroyed the Cougars 54-28 in Provo on Sept. 19 and TCU posted a 38-7 on Oct. 24 from Fort Worth. If you toss out this pair, the defense only gave up 16.8 PPG and that included a 13-point effort against Oklahoma in Week 1. We understand the Sooners? Sam Bradford was knocked out late in the first half but BYU held them to 10 points before the injury.

Ironically, this will be the second trip to Sam Boyd Stadium this season for both BYU and OSU. The Cougars drilled UNLV 59-21 as 17-point favorites on Oct. 10 and the Beavers stopped the Rebels 23-21 but failed to cover as 6 ?-point favorites on Sept. 12.

Including Oregon State?s win over UNLV, the Pac 10 went 3-0 in head-to-head meetings against the Mountain West Conference during the regular season. Dating back to 2000, OSU is 7-1 SU and 5-3 ATS versus schools from the MWC, which includes a 55-14 victory over New Mexico in the 2003 Las Vegas Bowl. Running back Steven Jackson (St. Louis Rams) gave us a glimpse of what he was going to do in the NFL in this blowout by piling up 200 total yards and 5 touchdowns.

BYU has gone 5-4 both SU and ATS in its nine meetings against Pac 10 foes.

If you?re looking at bowl trends, make a note that the Pac 10 went 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS bowl games last year and is 9-2 SU and 10-1 ATS the last two postseasons.

The ?over? has gone 3-0 in the first three bowls and the total on this game is fairly high. BYU watched the ?over? go 7-5, but Oregon State watched the ?under? go 6-5 during the regular season.

Oregon State and BYU have squared off eight times and the Beavers have come away with five victories. The last meeting between the two schools was in 1978, with OSU capturing a 10-7 win from Corvallis.

The latest weather reports out of Las Vegas expect precipitation early in the day but clear skies by kickoff. Temperatures are expected in the low fifties. We were made aware by a loyal VI reader and weather consultant (Tex) that winds could reach up to 20 miles per hour and gusts up to 30 mph. That's been confirmed and most would believe that the ball won't be flowing through the air tonight, at least not easily.

ESPN will provide national coverage of this game at 8:00 p.m. EST.
