Stop me if you've heard this before: the Washington Redskins are hiring a brand name head coach.
Those who bet on NFL know that the Redskins hire a celebrity coach pretty
much once every four years, but at least this time should be different.
The Redskins brought back Marty Schottenheimer in 2001, then hired Steve
Spurrier in 2002 and then hired Joe Gibbs in 2004. All of those coaches have
amounted to just one playoff win, which for owner Dan Snyder, is never
enough.
The hiring of Shanahan does signal a different change, though.
Coaches like Gibbs and Spurrier were just gimmicks, in a sense, that showed
to internet betting handicappers that the Redskins were more about show than
they were about winning. The hiring of Shanahan is very different.
Immediately, Shanahan and his two Super Bowl rings give him the most in the
NFL among active coaches except for Bill Belichick. That alone brings
credibility. Beyond that, Shanahan is a coach with a winning track record
through and through, while Spurrier and Gibbs were more shots in the dark.
The Redskins have been the offseason champions for several years in a row
now but under Shanahan, that is going to change.
For years, they have been the biggest spenders in the offseason in the
attempts to make a splash and make an impact. For the most part, the only
impact that has been made has been on the wallet of owner Dan Snyder as big
paydays for players like David Patten, Antwan Randel El, Shawn Springs,
DeAngelo Hall and Albert Haynesworth have made headlines but haven't made
noticeable changes to the team. The Redskins may as well give you teaser
tips as a lot of their signings look good in the offseason but never pan
out.
Shanahan is a smart head coach and now that he'll be running the entire
program, for the most part, he'll be making much smarter decisions.
Are the Redskins going to win a Super Bowl? Only time will tell. Will they
be more competitive? Absolutely.
While Shanahan was unexpectedly fired in Denver after his team's collapse in
the second half of the season, the reality is that Shanahan compiled a
record of 138-86 in Denver. In that 14 year span, the Broncos went to the
playoffs seven times.
Those who follow the NFL lines know that the Redskins are finally serious
about winning and now they have the man to lead the way. The gimmicks are
over and once Shanahan is officially heading this team, the Redskins will
start to become a team to be reckoned with in the NFC.
