HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 12:30 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Moonskipper - Beaten favorite ran OK in dropping from MSW to maiden claiming; has the resume to run better today.

Extra Energy - Sprinter stretching out around 2-turns for the first time; Art Sherman taking the blinkers off to relax.

Long Shot - Victory Stand

Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds

Da Bomb - Last out winner takes a subtle class drop tonight; has more than enough octane to win right back.

Lovely Lolly - Won a condition claimer in last, so this is a class rise; offers a lot of value at 8/1 odds.

Long Shot - Multitasker

Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $49,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 4-year-olds and up

Cadillac - Lost to the red-hot Shadow of Illinois in last; dead late closer loves the hillside turf course.

Banner Lodge - Bean Cadillac at Oak Tree and is a deserving chalk; has tactical speed with the turf rail out 15 feet.

Long Shot - Position A

Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Stylin Deputy - David Flores is booking his own mounts now; tells you he is a hungry rider, interesting.

It's Partytime - Ran well in last off a 10-month hiatus; big shot as long as she moves forward and not bounces.

Long Shot - Michelle's Love

Race 5 - 7 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up

Self Insured - Steady earner for Jeff Mullins; these are his friends, he keeps Joel Rosario, the one to beat.

Stand Tall - Running in great form and value with Felipe Valdez up; parking lot post to stalk the pace.

Long Shot - Raingear

Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, $65,000 Paseana Handicap, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

St. Trinians - Mare is tested for class today; she could be a major player in the division if she steps up.

Silver Swallow - Excellent second last out in the Bayakoa; she faced tougher than these, logical chalk.

Long Shot - Floating Heart

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds

Locksley Hall - English import has faced huge and more talented fields; Garrett Gomez must carve a trip from the rail.

Mister Do It - Showing improvement with each start for Dan Hendricks; his turf try two back was competitive.

Long Shot - El Mirage King

Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles, $150,000 San Pasqual Handicap, 4-year-olds and up

Neko Bay - Can turn the tables on the chalk at a square price; his best races have come over SA Pro Ride synthetics.

Furthest Land - Logical chalk won the BC Dirt Mile, shipped home, now returns; can he repeat the race at short odds.

Long Shot - Cherokee Artist

Race 9 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $10,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up

Doriprize - Dead late closer slides down to the bottom rung; should see plenty to cheap speed to set him up.

Turkish Victory - Speedball from the rail will have the task of playing catch me if you can; hot riding Victor Espinoza up.

Long Shot - Stormy Game

Best Bet - St. Trinians (race 6)

Santa Anita Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/0/$0; Long Shots, 8/3/$38.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #4 Screen to Screen (3/1) in race 3 at Penn National. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Snowy Elegance won at Philadelphia Park paying $3.80 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show. Stats - 11/9/$55.80

After failing to turn a profit with my top picks on Thursday for the first time this year, I came back with a vengeance on Friday.

Well, vengeance might be strong, but we had four winners on top on the nine race card, good for a +32% +ROI for the day.

While we were cashing tickets, the real fireworks occurred at Philadelphia Park.

Jockeys Eriluis Vaz and Ademar Santos exchanged blows heading down the backstretch in the fifth race.

Vaz, who was aboard Divine Light, and Santos, aboard Mi Helena both went to the lead, and on the head on replay it appeared the two jockeys were exchanging words.

On the backstretch Vaz veered inward intentionally to interfere with Santos.

Santos cocked his head and there was no doubt he had a few words for Vaz, who then struck Santos.

They exchanged a few swings, with Vaz getting in a hard right with his whip.

Divine Light, finished fifth and was disqualified and placed ninth, while Mi Helena faded to finish ninth.

It was one of the ugliest incidents involving jockeys I have seen, and it was lucky nobody was hurt.

It will be very interesting to see how the stewards handle the incident.

Vaz came back to win the seventh race, and I was surprised the stewards let him ride.

Both jockeys have a suspension in their future, and Vaz could be looking at a lengthy one.

I included all five of Gulfstream Park?s stakes in today?s Aqueduct Report

Here is today's opening race from Aqueduct to get our day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Clm $7,500N2L (12:30 ET)

#3 Bold Vindication

#10 Triple Glory

#1 The Mayor / #1a Larrys Revenge

#2 Monster Boots

Analysis: #3 Bold Vindication gets the nod in a very weak non winners of two in which none of these look very interested in finding the winners circle. The colt had a tough trip last out going a mile, having to steady heading down the backstretch and again approaching the quarter pole, weakening to finish seventh. Note the jock upgrade to Chavez, who hits at a 33% clip riding for Guillo. The colt is dropping into an easier spot here and while the 4/1 ML looks more than fair, the price is likely going to be lighter.

#10 Triple Glory raced evenly last out in a fourth place finish against $10K non winners of two. With the jock switch to Chuckie I am expecting to see this guy in the mix quicker today breaking from the outside. Two back he was a solid second, beaten just 3/4 of a length in a 12 horse field.

Wagering

WIN: #3 to win at 2/1 or better.

EX: 3,10 / 1,2,3,10

TRI: 3,10 / 1,2,3,10 / 1,2,3,5,10

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 3 Busanda Stakes (1:26 ET)

#5 Judge Sonya 5/1

#4 Fuzzy Britches 6/5

#2 Age of Humor 5/2

#1 Anchorage 7/2

Analysis: #5 Judge Sonya returns off a two month break where the filly beat Alw-1 foes at Penn. Three runners have come out of the race to win next out including the runner up Listen In, who won the Pa bred Blue Mountain Stakes in her next outing on Nov. 27. The filly has popped three bullet works since her last outing and is in good hands with the Perkins barn. With her last win coming at Penn this gal might get overlooked on the tote.

#4 Fuzzy Britches stretches back out to a route after beating $60K starter allowance company going six furlongs last out. She has finished in the money in three tries in stakes company and turns back quickly having run on Jan. 6. The barn is good bringing them back quickly and is 20% winners moving runners from sprint to route.

Wagering

WIN: #5 to win at 3/1 or better.

EX: 4,5 / 2,4,5

TRI: no play

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 7 Mr. Prospector Stakes (4:07 ET)

#2 Custom for Carlos 3/1

#4 Munnings 2/1

#3 Prince Joshua 6/1

#1 Past the Point 5/1

I will try to beat the likely favorite with #2 Custom for Carlos, who was a sharp winner of the Bet On Sunshine Stakes in his last start at Churchill Downs. Two runners came out of that race to win stakes in their next starts. Two back this guy was beaten just a nose in the Gallant Bob at Philadelphia Park behind a quick runner in Pachito the Che, who won the Dudley Sprint in his next start, then was beaten a nose in the Gravesand Handicap at Aqueduct on Dec. 26.

#4 Munnings may end up one of the top sprinters in the country this year, but he is returning off a three month break and may catch a wet track. The colt looked super in winning the Woody Stephens (G2) and Tom Fool (G2), but could not handle Grade 1 company on wet tracks in his last three starts, although he did run into tough company, among the runners that beat him was Rachel Alexandra, Vineyard Haven, Fabulous Strike and Kodiak Kowboy. He drilled a bullet work at Palm Meadows on Jan. 3 and the barn is strong off the bench, but the price may end up on the light side.

#3 Prince Joshua looks like he may be sitting on a good one here in his third start of his current form cycle, and appears to be the best shot of breaking up a chalky exacta. The gelding earned a career top two back in a neck loss in the Dudley Sprint Handicap at Calder, and then regressed last out in the Kenny Noe. He is 0 for 4 over the main track here but if he bounces back, he could be in the mix here at a decent price.

Wagering

WIN: #2 to win at 2/1 or better.

EX: 2,4 / 1,2,3,4

TRI: 2,4 / 1,2,3,4 / 1,2,3,4,6

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Aqueduct

R2: #1 He?s a Scrooge / #1a Freshman Dorm 8/1

R4: #7 Second and One 12/1

R7: #4 Pals First Lady 8/1

R8: #3 Success Fee 8/1

R9: #8 Last Noble 12/1

Good luck today!

Jeff Siegel's Analysis for Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010

Jeff Siegel's Analysis for Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010

Jeff Siegel's Analysis for Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010
The Pick-6 carryover of $76,179 adds spice to a strong 9-race program and there will be plenty of price opportunities to bolster a potentially lucrative payoff.

The first race, a maiden claiming dash for 3-year-old fillies, should boil down to #4 Moonskipper and #6 Extra Energy and both should be used in rolling exotic plays. Moonskipper was too far back early and could only muster a mild late bid to finish third as the choice in a similar affair last month. Her previous form against straight maiden types wasn?t bad, so she probably deserves a chance to make amends today. Extra Energy stretches out, removes blinkers, retains Bejarano and hails from a stable that excels with stretch-out plays.

We?ll double the second race using #2 Da Bomb and #5 Multitasker in our rolling exotics. Da Bomb has won half of her eight career starts and should fire another big shot today, while Multitasker drops to her lowest level ever, retains Rosario, and has the edge in the speed figure department. Either one can win.

#3 Cadillac and #4 Calimonco figure to battle things out in the third race, a downhill turf dash that doesn?t have a whole lot of pace to it. Cadillac is strictly a stretch runner but given the likely pace scenario shouldn?t be far back, and he?s a proven commodity over the course for high percentage connections. Calimonco is a useful Midwest invader and gets Gomez; the lightly-raced Storm Cat colt has rising speed figures and shortens up to what should be an ideal trip.

Maiden claimers kick off the Pick-6 in the fourth race and we suggest you use as many as you can afford to in an unclassified affair. #2 Flashy Traveler is an eight-race maiden but gets off the rail and retains Rosario, and she?ll be a factor with his best effort. #6 Dame Camille has trained nicely for her comeback and likely is better than her only try last year might indicate. She actually earned a decent number when fifth vs. slightly tougher foes in that outing and has trained pretty nicely for Powell. Beware. It?s Partytime has hit the board in three of six career starts, and is another who has a look in a rather modest affair.

The fifth race, an extended sprint for hard knocking mid-grade claimers, should showcase #2 Spot the Diplomat and #5 Self Insured, and those are the two we?re using. You might find the need to go a bit deeper. Spot the Diplomat, a winner of two of his last three, must be considered once again in his present form, but our top pick would be Self Insured for the Mullins-Rosario team. He?s a route to sprint play and seven furlongs strikes us as his premium trip.

The Paseana Handicap for older fillies and mares finds #4 Silver Swallow exiting a series of graded stakes and looks tough to beat in this overnight affair. She?s only 3-for-21 lifetime (with eight seconds) so she might be a hard one to trust, but she?s a ?must use? no matter how you slice it. The one to fear most is #7 St. Trinians, very impressive in two runaway allowance scores since being imported from England. The Mitchell-trained mare is moving up considerably in class, but her numbers make her a fit and she continues to train like something pretty special.

Maidens down the hill usually require a spread and in today?s seventh race we?ll go three-deep in our exotics. #1 Locksley Hall, second in both of his starts in England, has trained like he?s ready to roll in his U. S. debut and looks very live with Gomez taking the call. #4 Kuro has shown he can run some, continues to work well, and figures to be prominent throughout. #7 Mister Do It, second in his last pair, retains Solis and rates a big look off his good grass try at Hollywood Park two runs back.

Breeders? Cup Dirt Mile winner #7 Furthest Land returns from Florida where he was being kept on edge and definitely is the one to beat in the eighth race, the San Pasqual Handicap. A synthetic track specialist (unbeaten in three starts), the Mike Maker-trained gelding is reunited with Gomez and looks like a short price on a paper. If you?re inclined to double the race, consider #1 Cherokee Artist, winner of the Presque Isle Downs Mile over a synthetic track two runs back and a two-time winner over the Santa Anita Pro-Ride surface as well. He?ll enjoy a soft trip inside and looks dangerous under Bejarano.

Bottom of the barrel claimers make the ninth race a very difficult proposition to finish off the Pick-6 and the only way to feel truly confident about the event is to buy the race. If that?s not practical, use #1 Turkish Victory, #6 Legendary Mud and #11 Swiss Ski and keep your fingers crossed. Turkish Victory is stuck on the rail but drops to his lowest level ever and has hot trainer Marty Jones and hot rider Victor Espinoza to help out. Legendary Mud is another class dropper and has a decent recent try over the track. He switches to Rosario and should be set for his best. Swiss Ski has the perfect style for this extended sprint and drops for the money run for Carava. He?s our top pick.

Horse of the Year finalist Zenyatta, who capped her career undefeated in 14 starts after winning last year's Breeders' Cup Classic and is supposed to be bred this spring, remains at trainer John Shirreffs' barn at Hollywood Park, where she worked a half-mile Wednesday in 48 seconds, her third workout since Dec. 7.

Now there is speculation she isn't retired, and might race again in the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 27 over the synthetic track at Dubai's new Meydan Race Course. Or, if she loses Horse of the Year to Rachel Alexandra on Jan. 18, Zenyatta could return for a long-awaited showdown between the two great racemares

* After riding five straight beaten favorites on Thursday, Ramon Dominguez stormed back with four winners yesterday, including the $29.20 early double. Unlike his four winners on Wednesday and his two on Thursday, only one was favored.

FIRST RACE: Fuhrever Dancing, 3-1 in his first start since Oct. 11 for Gary Gullo and just his second since Aug. 16, went to the front under Jorge Chavez, pressed by 6-5 favorite Stungbythestorm, Ramon Dominguez up, who made his move turning for home while still in hand and looked like he run right by Fuhrever Dancing. But once Stungbythestorm, stepping back up to 12.5G off an easy win for 7.5G, made the lead, Fuhrever Dancing dug in gamely and battled back the length of the stretch to miss by less than a length.

SECOND RACE: Tony Dutrow's Volare Cantare, 3-1 making her second start since losing her debut last September at Monmouth by 21 lengths (when trained by Jimmy Jerkens), turned this into a laugher. Taking the lead into the clubhouse turn under Dominguez, she quickly shook loose on the lead, opened even more daylight around the far turn and cruised home a pole in front.

SIXTH RACE: Caldron, 6-1, was hustled to a daylight lead by Channing Hill, chased by 3-2 favorite Fly South, David Cohen up. Those two dueled to mid-stretch, when Fly South finally clawed his way past Caldron. But by that time, Always Mine, 4-1 making his first start since breaking his maiden on Oct. 29 for Rick Dutrow Jr., came flying outside under Dominguez to blow by them all.

EIGHTH RACE: Starship Angel, 5-2 coming off a 9?-length runaway on Dec. 1 at Meadowlands, appeared to lose all chance when she broke slowly to trail the field as 6-5 favorite Cape Cod Girl set the pace inside, pressed by 8-1 Salt Water Reign, Fernando Jara up. Salt Water Reign, stretching out to mile after racing in sprints the past two years, dogged Cape Cod Girl around the turn and down the stretch, when she surged to the lead with a furlong to run. But Starship Angel, under patient handling by Rosey Napravnik, came with a sudden rush in deep stretch to take command.
