Duke coach David Cutcliffe has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Tennessee head coaching job, a source close to the situation said Friday. Cutcliffe, a former offensive coordinator with the Vols, had talks with Tennessee on Thursday to potentially replace Lane Kiffin, who bolted the program on Tuesday to become USC coach.

"David Cutcliffe will remain at Duke," a source close to the situation said.

Will Muschamp... $3M per year, no thanks.

Jon Gruden... sorry, not interested.

Troy Calhoun... excited to stay at Air Force.

David Cutcliffe... would rather stay at Duke.

Who will be next to turn down the Viles?

Staff issues have apparently ended any possibility of an agreement between Tennessee and Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe for the former Vol offensive coordinator to be named UT's next head coach.

WNML radio has reported that Cutcliffe has pulled his name from the list of candidates and will remain at Duke. An official release from Duke is thought to be forthcoming.

A deal seemed close to materializing on Thursday when Cutcliffe began assembling his staff. However, the Vols still have six current staff members on campus and Cutcliffe would have been required to retain at least some of those coaches.

I've been reading about that, but when UcheaT AD Mike Hamilton was asked that he flatly replied, "No."

There is a push by some UcheaT regents to get Hamilton fired and bring in Fat Phil as the AD. No one doubts his love for UcheaT, but if I'm the new football coach, I don't want him as my boss.

Pat Summitt would be a great AD. I love her and that is the only thing UcheaT I root for. I've met her several times and she is awesome.

Hamilton was right to tell Cutcliffe that he cannot bring his whole staff. His staff is a joke and he could have worked with Kippy Brown, Thompson, and Cheney which would have make the situation much more feasible. If Hamilton let Coach Cutt bring his whole staff, then countdown to Fulmer as AD would have started at 10.

Calhoun was never offered the job but because he interviewed last time he came out and made the statement.

No one, including closest sources, had any idea of Kiffin even being considered last time, so sources are about as good as the toilet paper they wipe with.

Going to be interesting over the next twelve hours, but unless they can pay a buy out for a big name, they will just give it to Kippy Brown and see what happens for a year.

There have been five different NFL players who have called sports talk shows this morning here who are saying the best candidate is already there in Kippy. Hell, Andre Johnson is on right now saying Kippy should get it. If they looked at Cutt, they should give it to Kippy because there is no difference in them except the color of skin.

Yeah, I said it

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Football coach David Cutcliffe is staying at Duke.

Amid reports that he was a candidate for the opening at Tennessee, the two-time Volunteers assistant coach said Friday he would remain with the Blue Devils.

"After much thought and consideration, Karen and I reached the decision that Duke is the place for our family," Cutcliffe said in a statement issued through the school.

Because of his deep-rooted connections to the Southeastern Conference and the Volunteers' program, Cutcliffe was considered one of the obvious choices to replace Lane Kiffin, who left abruptly this week for Southern California.

"We have both family members and lifetime friends in the Knoxville community and share a deep respect for the University of Tennessee," he said. "Our ties to the school and the eastern Tennessee area are obvious. But before Tennessee's hiring process comes to a conclusion, I know that Duke University is where we want to coach."

Duke athletic director Kevin White said Cutcliffe told him Friday morning that he "intends to remain the Duke football coach for a long time."

"Simply put, we could not be happier or more excited about the future of the Blue Devils football program," White said.

Cutcliffe was on Tennessee's staff from 1982-1998 and from 2006-07, leaving twice to take head coaching jobs.

He went 44-29 with five bowl appearances in six-plus seasons at Mississippi from 1998-2004. Cutcliffe is 9-15 in two seasons at Duke, which won a combined eight games in the five years before he arrived. The Blue Devils are coming off a 5-7 finish, their best since 1994.

This marks the second time in nearly 15 months that he removed his name from consideration for the Tennessee job. When longtime friend and mentor Phillip Fulmer was forced out in November 2008, Cutcliffe quickly quashed speculation that he would return to Knoxville.

You think that jackass Ears Tuberville is kicking himself for taking the Texas Tech job on Sunday?

I worked with Tuberville 98-99. And was a bartender where he frequented weekly visiting the "in" Auburn area crowd.

He is truly a good man and is salt of the earth.

I really don't think you know what you're stating on this one Bammer...

I say give it to Kippy with the understanding that it's for one year only and try to make a big splash next year.

There are no "slam dunks" left out there for Hamilton. There are some good coaches out there who would come to UcheaT if the timing was better. Buy yourself a year and then go for broke.

I know it sounds crazy, but Lovie Smith worked here, would work with the staff already here, but he has a HUUUUUUUUUGE buy out, but the Bears might work with him on it because the Chicago nation would be ok with it.

Lovie and/or Kippy are absolute class A men and would be happy with either. Both would serve as great examples and ambassadors for the university, and would be able to ease recruits concerns for the shit that Orgeron put out there.
