Charles Howell(50/1) e.w.
- - I've been waiting 2 days . . . During the telecast of the first round at Torrey Pines (SC), the commentator (maybe Billy Andrade?) mentioned that CHIII was feeling very good about his game and what he was working on in the off season, "but the putting just hasn't come around" . . . I much prefer the story that gets told by following a player on PGA Shot Tracker than looking at some stat compilations at the end of each round and each tournament, and what I tracked for CHIII the next three days was some obviously excellent sharpness in his short game and scrambling, making most of the putts any potential contender should have no business missing, but not being able to make much of anything more than this very modest quota. While his driving appeared spotty on Shot Tracker, he must have been in some decent spots because his approaches appeared to be very much as they should be . . . Simply put, since about Saturday to me, Charles has looked fairly primed to ease himself into a run that is fueled by his putter rather than doused by his putter.
Fred Couples(80/1) e.w.
- - I've been waiting over 2 weeks . . . In his Champions Tour debut, Couples putted beautifully from start to finish, and oh-by-the-way, did so while engaged in a duel with Tom Watson that I am sure at the end of the year will rank as one of the season's best on any Tour. Simply put, down the stretch they came, and the twitchy stroke never made a single appearance. If there's a "next venue" where something comparable might be tapped into, it magically appears next on the calendar.
Rich Beem(250/1) e.w.
and
Rich Beem(200/1) e.w. 1st Round Leader
- - I've been waiting almost 2 weeks . . . Simply put, there are a few plays that for a variety of different reasons I am duty bound to make every season: Appleby at Firestone, Mediate at Arnie's place, Garrido at Open de Espana, Dougherty at Wentworth, and Beem at Riviera immediately come to mind (Mediate, Garrido and Appleby have already paid for a slew of those past and future wagers with their very memorable runner-up finishes). This year, I caught Beem on television for just a single hole while he was chasing the cut on Sunday at the Bob Hope, and I believed I could palpably sense he had percolating within him a sweet week at his favorite venue.
I'll likely have one or two more plays, too.
