The Wyoming Cowboys might be shorthanded, but they aren?t waving the white flag.

With injuries and losses piling up as the Mountain West Conference Championships open today, it?d be easy for the Pokes to be looking to the end of a bleak season.

But they?re not simply going to go away and their fight to try and surge through the conference tournament begins in the play-in game today.

?We have guys that are hungry on this team,? UW junior Djibril Thiam said after a loss on Saturday at UNLV. ?And each game we step on the floor is a chance to make a statement. We?re working. We?ll take any chance, any day. We're going to make one last push.?

They might have to do it without their top point guard.

Sophomore captain JayDee Luster injured his groin in the loss to the Rebels and UW coach Heath Schroyer said Tuesday that he didn?t know if Luster would be able to play against the Falcons.

?I?m not overly optimistic,? Schroyer said. ?He?s a tough kid and a competitor but you could tell he was really hurting after the game.

?[Desmar Jackson] has played the point a lot this year. If JayDee can?t go, we won?t change anything. We?ll probably put a wrinkle in just for Dez to keep it simple for him, but nothing out of the ordinary.?

To advance into the quarterfinals against New Mexico, however, they may need a similar out-of-the-ordinary performance as the one they got against Air Force just one week ago today.

In that game, the Cowboys buried nine 3-pointers and were able to play stingy defense against the Falcons? methodical offense.

?If we?re able to make some shots, we have a better chance to have some success,? Schroyer said. ?They?re very hard to play, especially playing them a third time. We?re going to have to go there and try to take away their 3s and we're going to have to try to make some.?

UW provided Air Force its only victory over the past two seasons in MWC play, making today?s game a rubber match for the teams.

The Falcons were able to take advantage of the Pokes? injuries in the first meeting and should get some help playing against a team with just six fully healthy scholarship players.

?Our concerns are still pretty much the same that they?ve been,? Air Force coach Jeff Reynolds said. ?We?ve got to control Desmar Jackson. It?s hard to really stop him, you just have to limit him as best you can.

?We?ve got to keep them off the board ? and then we have to play our tempo and our style.?

Whether the Cowboys can play at their higher tempo might be dictated on what they get out of their point guard spot.

Either way, both teams will be looking for a late-season bright spot to close out forgettable seasons.

?I think it?s very important for any team to continue to try and pick up as many wins as you can and try to continue to play,? Reynolds said.

One team will be playing again Thursday.

RECORDS: Cowboys (10-20, 3-13 Mountain West Conference); Falcons (9-20, 1-15 MWC).

FINAL PUSH: Both teams would need a miraculous Vegas run this week to have a shot at the postseason, but are looking to take some momentum into the offseason.

HE SAID IT: "It's very important for any team to continue to try and pick up as many wins as you can and try to continue to play." -- Air Force coach Jeff Reynolds.

GIMME FIVE

3. PLAY-IN GAME: Air Force will play in the Mountain West Conference tournament play-in game for the second straight year. It beat Colorado State last year.

4. VITALS: Today's meeting will be the 100th overall between Wyoming and Air Force. They've played at least once for 53 straight seasons.

4. VITALS: Today will be the fifth time that the Falcons and Pokes have squared off in the MWC tournament. UW has never lost.

5. QUOTE: "We'll probably put a wrinkle in just for Dez to keep it simple for him, but nothing out of the ordinary." -- UW coach Heath Schroyer.

AFA's Parker hopes to finish strong

Air Force?s Grant Parker wants to finish his senior year with a flourish.

Kind of like how he started it.

The 6-foot-8 forward/center scored a career-high 26 points in the Falcons? season opener and through seven games was averaging 17.1 points.

But an unusual pelvic injury sidelined Parker for the next 10 games ? about a third of the season. And while he performed admirably through the rest of the Falcons? league schedule, he was hampered by the injury and faded in the last two regular-season games. Parker shot just 9-of-27 from the field in the two games, including 0-for-11 from 3-point range.

That?s not how he wants to conclude his academy career.

?You don?t want to go out on a cold streak,? Parker said after scoring four points in Saturday?s 61-42 loss to San Diego State.

The forward/center has a chance to redeem himself Wednesday in the Mountain West Conference Tournament play-in game. Air Force, the tournament?s ninth seed, faces eighth-seeded Wyoming at 3 p.m. with the winner meeting top-seeded New Mexico at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Air Force and Wyoming split their regular-season meetings, with Wyoming winning last week in Laramie, 58-49, and the Falcons beating the Cowboys, 70-63, at Air Force on Jan. 30 for their only league victory.

?I?m excited,? Parker said. ?We know we can beat Wyoming. ? I?m definitely thankful that we?re going to get to go to Vegas and have another chance to win a game.?

Last season the Falcons were able to gain a morsel of redemption after an 0-16 conference regular season with a victory over Colorado State in the tournament play-in game. They hope to do the same this year to build momentum going into the offseason and send Parker and the senior class off with at least one more victory.

?Those seniors have worked tremendously hard throughout the whole time they?ve been here, and they?ve taught all us young guys a lot of things,? junior forward Tom Fow said. ?It was definitely disappointing to lose on Senior Night, and I feel pretty confident that we can work pretty hard and send these seniors off with a good end to their careers.?

3 THINGS TO WATCH

1. 3-POINT SHOOTING
Air Force beat Wyoming, 70-63, on Jan. 30 but lost to the Cowboys, 58-49, on March 2. The major difference in Wyoming's victory? ?I thought (the Falcons) missed some shots, and we made some shots,? Wyoming coach Heath Schroyer said. ?It really is that simple.? The teams? 3-point shooting performances in the games are especially noteworthy. In Air Force?s victory, it made 11-of-25 3s, while Wyoming made 5-of-22. In Wyoming?s victory, it made 9-of-23 3s, while the Falcons made 5-of-20.

2. AIR FORCE G MICHAEL LYONS
The Falcons need a solid performance from the freshman, who has struggled of late. Lyons has made just 1-of-19 3-point field goals in his past five games ? he?s missed 15 straight since hitting one in the second half against New Mexico on Feb. 20. In the loss to Wyoming on March 2, Lyons missed all four of his 3s and committed five turnovers. In Air Force?s victory over the Cowboys on Jan. 30, Lyons scored 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and he turned the ball over just once.

3. WYOMING G DESMAR JACKSON
Air Force held the Cowboys? freshman to 12 points on 2-of-8 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line in last week?s game in Laramie. But the third-team all-Mountain West Conference selection is capable of scoring in bunches (he has topped 20 points in four of his past six games). ?The first thing we have to be able to do is what we did up there, and that?s contain Jackson,? Air Force coach Jeff Reynolds said.

Quote to Note: ?Right after we had the disappointing loss against San Diego State (in lSaturday?s regular-season finale), everyone was saying, ?Hey, this is a new season. This is a fresh start. We can do the best we possibly can and make something special happen.'? ? Air Force junior forward Tom Fow.

Note to Quote: Air Force?s series with Wyoming has been ultra-competitive in recent years. Since 2003, the teams have split their 18 meetings, and just three of those 18 games have been decided by double-figure margins. Eleven of the games have been decided by five points or less. Wyoming has won both of the teams? games in the MWC Tournament (57-55 in 2006 and 67-62 in 2007).
