Marine... How did it go?

I got a call on Friday with an offer, I countered, waited all day and called back... HR Director then asked if I considered the car allowance, I mentioned I did and that I have one currently as well, (their's is $200 a month more though) she then switched to... would you split the difference and meet half way? For the sake of firming up the offer, and being happy with the effort to even meet halfway in this economy, I verbally accepted upon reading the official offer in hard copy, and then speaking with other sales reps.

But it looks like this could be completed on Monday or Tuesday! Start day will then be discussed as I go on vacation on the 24th of March for a week to Cancun. Admittedly in a bit of a bind with current company as to timing and letting them know. I am definitely still working and closing deals on their behalf. (Mind is a little bit elsewhere however!) Now I need to pray I really enjoy the people, and the company! Doesn't matter how much you research companies and people, it is still a crap shoot!!!

Without discussing commissions/bonus structure.... this is a nice bump from my current salary! Whew!:mj06:

Thanks again for the thoughts ladies and gents!

It went as good as it can go for me.

I flew out to the pacific northwest for 3 days/2 nights and did interviews with the company.

Within 3 days they were calling me back with an offer. I was on a pretty hectic travel schedule at the time though - I got a midwest -->east coast--> midwest --> west coast -->midwest --> gulf coast trip done in 7 days. So we had to put any offer talks on hold till that was done.

They made a nice offer to me. I would be packing up and moving to seattle for it. While the dollar amount looked pretty nice on paper - it would have just kept me on par with my current quality of life. Year 3 & 4 working there I would have pretty much become a millionaire with the stocks/shares given as a sign on bonus. 3 years from now I'm going to look back at this time in my life and see how dumb/smart I was.

In the end, I went sleepless for a couple nights trying to decide on it and eventually had to decline the offer. I worried about a cultural fit (me fitting in there) and job duties wise and work atmosphere I feel like I would have been stepping back for a little bit and putting myself through at least one full year of complete misery before I had any chance of really being comfortable and happy there.

So the old question of rich and miserable vs. getting by and happy... 5 years ago I woulda took the money and not even thought twice about it.

Congratulations, guys! Great to hear. I'll have to wait until I fight through my decision to change careers and get through school (finally) to do what I think I will love, before going through those decisions. Hope the new jobs go well for you guys - that's as good as it gets these days.

Marine- Tough decisions to be made to be sure, was the company also a recruting/executive search firm?

Slink- Congrats, and good luck on the new position!

Chadman- The schooling is the easy part of what you are doing, I taught for 5 years, and my license expires 2011. It will be sad, but licensure has changed so much just over the past few years, that it is hard to keep up with unless I track it at Education MN. You will also see our union head, Tom Dooher, I know him fairly well from years back. Good guy, but tough position to be sure.

To this day, there has/was/is nothing more rewarding than my time as a teacher. I do the other things unfortunately, because of the money. Some enjoyment, but on a scale of 1-10, 4 or less in sales, teaching a solid 10! The only thing I would enjoy more is entrepreneurship, that hopefully will be in my not so distant future!

Update, I will start my new position on April 5th! SO come back from Mexican vacation, tell current employer I am done upon my return, and then off to new adventure!

I do corporate recruiting - not the headhunter junk. The new job was as a recruiting/sourcing manager for the largest online retailer in the world.
