Women arrested, tried to take corpse on flight to Berlin
Two women have been arrested in the United Kingdom for allegedly trying to transport a dead 91-year-old man on a flight from Liverpool to Berlin. The Associated Press writes police arrested the women "after they reportedly tried to smuggle a corpse onto a flight. Police said Tuesday the women were detained at Liverpool's John Lennon airport 'on suspicion of failing to give notification of death' of a 91-year-old man."
The women apparently brought the man to the airport in a taxi and then tried to check him in for a flight to Berlin on easyjet. The man was seated in a wheelchair and had sunglasses on. The women claim they thought he was sleeping. "However," the London Telegraph writes, "horrified staff at the airport soon noticed that something was seriously wrong with [the man]" and alerted security.
The Guardian of London writes the women arrested in the case are "German nationals aged 66 and 41 who live in Oldham, Greater Manchester." The Manchester Evening News says the women have been "accused of trying to smuggle the body back to Germany in a bizarre attempt to avoid ?3,000 repatriation fees. But the women say they did not know [the man] - who suffered from Alzheimer's - had died. They say they had taken him - along with three of [the family's] children - to the airport in a taxi ahead of a family trip to Berlin." :142smilie :142smilie
