PawSox opening night set for Thursday

The Pawtucket Red Sox are gearing up for opening night.

The PawSox will host the Rochester Red Wings at McCoy Stadium Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

Right-handed pitcher Boof Bonser, on an injury rehab assignment from the Red Sox, will start for the PawSox. He formerly played for the Minnesota Twins but was out most of last season to recover from surgery on his right shoulder.

Bonser got a groin injury during Red Sox spring training last month.

Swarzak gets the call to start Red Wings opener

Right-hander Anthony Swarzak will start the season opener for the Rochester Red Wings when the International League season begins Thursday night in Pawtucket, R.I.

Swarzak, 24, is one of the Minnesota Twins' top prospects. He was the Twins' second-round draft pick in 2004.

The Florida native went 4-5 with a 3.28 earned-run average with the Wings last year. He also made his big-league debut and finished 3-7, 6.25 with Minnesota.

He'll be opposed by former Red Wing Boof Bonser, who is making a rehab start for the Pawtucket Red Sox.

Bonser was traded from Minnesota to Boston in the offseason. He is on the disabled list with a groin injury.

The Wings and PawSox play at 7 p.m. Thursday at McCoy Stadium.

The same teams will meet on Saturday, April 17 for the Frontier Field opener.

Chiefs' Martin draws Opening Day assignment

Syracuse pitcher J.D. Martin hopes Thursday?s Opening Day assignment goes better than the last time he was selected to pitch in a season opener.

Martin, who was announced as the Chiefs? Opening Day starting pitcher on Tuesday, last pitched a season opener for Class-A Kinston in 2003.

?I gave up six runs in the first inning,? he said. ?I?m going to have to redeem myself for that one.?

Chiefs Manager Trent Jewett said Martin was the logical choice to pitch Thursday?s 2 p.m. game against Lehigh Valley for a variety of reasons. Martin will oppose Ironpigs left-hander Brian Mazone.

?Since J.D. was in big-league camp for so long, he?s the most stretched out, and it happened to fall on his day,? Jewett said. ?But he?s a guy who has been through the wars at this level and the next, so it seemed like a logical choice.?

Martin, a 6-foot-, 200 pound right-hander, was 8-3 with a 2.66 earned run average in 16 games, including 15 starts, for Syracuse last season. He also made 15 starts for the parent Washington Nationals, compiling a 5-4 record and a 4.44 ERA. The 27-year-old was one of only two Nationals starters ? the other is current Chiefs pitcher Shairon Martis ? to post a better-than .500 record for the Nats.

The Chiefs practiced outdoors Tuesday at Alliance Bank Stadium before a late afternoon rain shower chased them indoors. The club is scheduled to practice again at the stadium from 3 to 5 p.m. today.

?I think at this point everybody is ready to get the first one out of the way,? Martin said. ?It definitely is a thrill for me to pitch on Opening Day. I?m ready to go.?

Good stuff I.E

thanks.

Wish some books would put up lines for the other minor leagues.

Its funny that a book does post lines on PCL IL and double AA with totals on all , but of course they do not take american players.
