NHL Playoff Betting Preview ? Eastern Conference

Normally, there would be a great deal of clamor about a young, though veteran squad that was seeking a second straight Stanley Cup and third consecutive appearance in the finals. However, all is quiet about Pittsburgh on the Eastern Conference front with the season Washington had. The Capitals are the most dominating offensive team in hockey, as they scored 96 more goals than No. 2 seed New Jersey (allowed 42 more) and the second best scoring team was Vancouver, who was a distant 46 goals behind. If defense wins championships, then Washington is the wrong choice in a conference with only three teams with legit chance to play for Stanley Cup. All lines courtesy of Bookmaker.com.

(1) Washington vs (8) Montreal

How good has Washington been? The Caps are first team in four years to ring up 300 or more goals and have seven snipers that but the puck over the line 20 or more times. Alex Ovechkin is arguably the most dominating offensive player in the game and Mike Green led all NHL defenseman in points. Washington was 30-11 at home, but six of those losses came in overtime. Rejuvenated Jose Theodore has been nearly unbeatable for three months, as his only three losses in 23 starts have come after three periods of play (20-0-3).

Sure Montreal comes in as the eighth seed, performing worse than Kate Gosselin on DWTS with three wins in last 11 outings, but those sweaters are still Le Bleu-Blanc-et-Rouge. The Canadiens might have an edge in speed in their offensive end, but they look like pip-squeaks compared the Washington blue-liners. That would leave Jaroslav Halak to have to stand on his head in net against Capitals onslaught.

These teams split four games, each winning on the other?s frozen pond, but Washington is the top overall choice to win the Cup at +275 and should sweep if focused and win in five if not, being better in all areas against Les Habitants.

Pick- Washington (-565) in four over Montreal (+465)

(2) New Jersey vs (7) Philadelphia

Typically, the second seed would be thrilled their first round opponent had to fight until the 82nd game to make the postseason tournament, however that is not the case with New Jersey. The Devils had a devil of a time, losing five of six times to Philadelphia. New Jersey plays defensive-style, conceding the fewest goals at 2.3 per contest with the remarkable Martin Broduer in front of the cage. Offensively, the Devils are not imposing beyond Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk and they enter the playoffs 22-8 having won three of previous four.

The Flyers are better than what they showed losing eight of 12 (they did win three of final four to sneak in) to gain entry into the playoffs. Philadelphia has components that could lead to upset. Philly is ranked third in the league in power play conversion at 21.5 percent and a respectable 11th on penalty kills. It?s not a coincidence the ?06 Edmonton squad and ?07 Anaheim club were in the finals with Chris Pronger manning the blue line, as he always elevates his play in the postseason. The wild card is third string goalie Brian Boucher, whose been forced to play with others injured. He helped the Flyers make the playoffs, can he lead the upset?

If Philadelphia can light the lamp on man-advantages and curtail New Jersey?s chances, an upset is in the making.

Pick- Philadelphia (+195) in seven over New Jersey (-235)
(3) Buffalo vs (6) Boston

Two teams from the old Adams Division (circa 1974-93) will chase the puck in the third of three first round division matchups. Both Buffalo and Boston had surprising seasons, the Sabres for winning the division with relative ease and the Bruins for scuffling just to make the playoffs after having the most points in the East last season. Watch the total in Buffalo, as these clubs are 8-1 UNDER.

The series is about finding bodies that can produce on the ice. Buffalo has players at less than 100 percent like Tim Connolly, Jochen Hecht and Drew Stafford, which means goalie extraordinaire Ryan Miller will play a key role in Buffalo advancement. If Miller can almost singlehandedly take the USA to Olympic gold, he can certainly contain Boston?s feeble attack. The Sabres split four contests with division partner.

Boston has a number of players out and it?s hard to comprehend a team could be in playoffs after finishing 30th in goals scored, nonetheless, here the Bruins are. Boston suffered a 10-game losing streak from the middle of January into February. They had a stretch of scoring more than three goals once in 19 contests, yet managed to win six of last nine games (all losses by one goal). Coach Claude Julien had to do the unthinkable, turn his team?s fortunes over to 22-year-old Tuukka Rask between the pipes. Though Rask was named starter just 39 times, he led the NHL in both goals-against average and save percentage.

Pick- Boston (+145) in six over Buffalo (-165)
(4) Pittsburgh vs (5) Ottawa

Whether it?s an 8 vs. 9 in the NCAA basketball tournament or 4 vs. 5 in the NBA or hockey playoffs, the presumption is a tight game or series is the forecast. This however is not the case in this Eastern confrontation. The talented Penguins waddled thru the regular season and flip the switch in mid-April. After losing to Detroit in 2008 Finals, Pittsburgh was less than inspired the next season finishing fourth, the very same position they are in presently, on the way to being champions.

Pittsburgh has Sid Crosby and the defending NHL scoring champ Evgeni Malkin, who was hampered by injuries most of the season. He played in 66 games, but was a factor in maybe half and had an off year. Though Pitt?s often dynamic duo will receive light criticism for indifference during the regular season, no player is more emblematic of his team than enigmatic Marc-Andre Fleury. He?s a latter day Grant Fuhr of the Edmonton glory days with Wayne Gretzky and the gang.

Ottawa is more unstable than some of the people that sit with Dr. Phil. The Senators had 11-game winning streak right before Valentine?s Day and a six-game stretch without a defeat afterwards. Throw those in the blender with a four and two 5-game losing streaks and it?s easy to decipher Ottawa as having multiple personalities for extended periods. A bit of research dug up these facts about the Senators that are very telling about their mental makeup. Ottawa is 21-4 SU when leading after first 20 minutes and is 4-24 SU when trailing.

Pick- Pittsburgh (-275) in five over Ottawa (+235)

NHL Eastern Conference: Round 1 preview and picks

Washington Capitals (1) vs. Montreal Canadiens (8) Series odds (-551, +462)

Season series (2-1-1 for Washington)

Expect a bunch of goals in this series. Both teams put everything at the net and neither have the goaltending to win 2-1 games. Ovechkin gets all the headlines, but it?ll be Nicklas Backstrom who gives the Caps the boost they?ll need.

The Canadiens limped into the postseason and don?t have the makeup to compete with Washington, especially when the Caps get the puck deep and start circling and cycling.

Hal Gill and the rest of the Montreal defense are going to have a terrible time chasing the puck in their own end and the team?s under-sized forward unit will need a lot of power play goals to make this series interesting.

Pick: Capitals in five games

New Jersey Devils (2) at Philadelphia Flyers (7) (-220, +197)

Season series (5-1 for Philadelphia)

You can?t knock Philadelphia?s intensity. The Flyers hung on down the stretch of the regular season and look to overcome some questionable goaltending (what else is new?) with gritty play, leaning on their big defense. They?ll have their hands full, too.

Don?t be surprised if Ilya Kovalchuk takes hold of this series, his second dose of NHL playoff hockey. The Devils have enough depth up front that he doesn?t feel like he needs to do everything for this club and everybody seems to be gelling in the dressing room. He might be just what New Jersey needs to help Brodeur make another deep run.

Pick: Devils in six games

Buffalo Sabres (3) vs. Boston Bruins (6) (-166, +150)

Season series (4-1 for Boston)

The Bruins are a tough read here. Injuries have ripped this team apart, rookie goalie Tuukka Raask has emerged to put reigning Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas on the bench and Boston?s offense has been terrible all year. So there are some question marks with the Bruins.

Buffalo, meanwhile, has one constant: goaltender Ryan Miller, a Hart Trophy candidate this season. Miller can win this series on his own if it comes down to it.

Keep an eye on the totals for this series. We could be in for a lot of unders.

Pick: Buffalo in four games

Pittsburgh Penguins (4) vs. Ottawa Senators (5) (-290, +256)

Season series (2-2 tie)

It?d be easy just to pencil Pittsburgh past the Sens, but Sidney Crosby?s club has some work ahead of it. Jason Spezza shook off a bad start to the season to finish strong and Daniel Alfredsson continues to roll along as one of the better captains in the league.

Ottawa will need both of those guys to step up huge with the enigma Alex Kovalev on the shelf. Meanwhile, Brian Elliott is holding the fort in goal, or was during the regular season anyway. This will be his first taste of the postseason.

The Pens look to be rounding into form just in time for the start of this series. Evgeni Malkin?s really hitting his stride over the last week or two (remember, he topped the playoff scoring board last year) and Jordan Staal is as steady as ever. This is the best team down the middle in the league, which means a lot this time of year.

Pick: Penguins in five games

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Washington vs. Montreal

WASHINGTON CAPITALS (1st seed, East)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 54-15-13

2009 PLAYOFFS: Defeated NY Rangers 4-3 in conference quarterfinals; lost to Pittsburgh 4-3 in conference semifinals

REVIEW: The Washington Capitals are such a formidable offensive force that even when you talk about their defense you are still really talking about offense.

Of course, Washington's prolific scoring attack begins with superstar winger Alex Ovechkin, but unlike a few years ago, it doesn't end there. As if it wasn't enough that the Capitals have the best offensive player in the league, Washington also boasts far and away the NHL's top-scoring defenseman in Mike Green.

With Ovechkin and Green leading the way for Washington the team reached unprecedented heights during the regular season. The Caps set franchise records in points (121) and wins (54) and by earning the club's first Presidents' Trophy, Washington assured itself of home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

But that's the regular season, and as the Caps have learned in recent years, winning in the playoffs is much different than racking up victories in October and November. Two years ago, Washington made the playoffs for the first time since the spring of 2003 and was bounced out in the first round by Philadelphia. Last season, the Capitals beat the New York Rangers in seven games during the Eastern Conference quarterfinals only to lose in seven to Pittsburgh in the semis.

The Capitals were easily the best offensive team in the NHL during the regular season, scoring 318 goals -- 46 more than the next club on the list, the Vancouver Canucks.

Interestingly enough, although the Caps have been thought of as one of the best offensive teams in the league for a few years now, Washington's goal haul has actually increased dramatically in each of the past two years. They scored 242 times in 2007-08 and had 272 tallies

Washington also had a goal differential of plus-85 this year. The Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks were the only other NHL teams to have goal differentials of plus-50 or better.

Only four players reached 100 points in the NHL this season and the Capitals had two of them in Ovechkin and fellow forward Nicklas Backstrom, who recorded 101 points while centering No. 8 on Washington's top line.

Despite missing 10 games due to injuries and suspensions, Ovechkin tied Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby for second in the league with 109 points and his 50 goals were just one behind Crosby and Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos for the Rocket Richard Trophy.

Although Ovechkin has only won one of his three career playoff series, the 24- year-old has certainly produced in the postseason, notching 15 goals and 15 assists in 21 career playoff games.

Backstrom has also done well beyond the regular season and is a point-per-game player in the playoffs, tallying 21 points (7 goals, 14 assists) in 21 contests.

Second-line winger Alexander Semin is another key contributor on offense who has shown the ability to translate his regular-season success to the playoffs. Semin, who was second on the team this year with 40 goals and third in points with 84, has 22 points (8g, 14a) in his 21 career playoff stats.

Perhaps sensing that its quantity of offense wasn't enough to get them to the next level, playoff-wise, the Capitals signed veteran winger Mike Knuble to a two-year deal this past summer. The 37-year-old Knuble made a name for himself over the past few years in Philadelphia for using his size to stand in front of the net and get timely goals.

Knuble played on the top line with Ovechkin and Backstrom this year and had 29 goals, including five of the game-winning variety. Knuble also boosted the team's power-play unit, which was ranked first in the NHL with a 25.2-percent success rate.

All told, Washington had seven players with 20 or more goals this year and Green nearly made it eight with his 19 markers from the blueline. Green is often considered to be one-dimensional, but even those critics have to be impressed with that one dimension. He has led the league in scoring and goals by a defenseman in each of the last two years. Green suffered a hefty drop-off in goals from 2008-09 when he potted 31 markers, but he actually went up in points, scoring 76 this year compared to 73 a season ago.

The problem for Washington is that it hasn't found the right balance on its roster when it comes to defense. The club struggles to shut teams down on the rare occasion when it isn't overpowering the opposition with offense. The Caps traded for veteran defensemen Joe Corvo and Milan Jurcina before the deadline and the club hopes they provide the depth needed at the back end in the playoffs.

However, the biggest question mark for Washington is once again its goaltending. Jose Theodore heads into the postseason as the club's starter, but that doesn't mean much after last spring. Theodore was also was the team's presumptive No. 1 at this time last year and only wound up starting one of the team's 14 playoff games as head coach Bruce Boudreau made the quick switch to then rookie Semyon Varlamov.

Theodore was 30-7-7 with a .911 save percentage and a 2.81 goals against average during the 2009-10 regular season and beat out Varlamov for the postseason job with his strong play down the stretch. Still, don't be surprised if you see Varlamov man the pipes should the Caps fall behind in this series.

MONTREAL CANADIENS (8th seed, East)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 39-33-10

2009 PLAYOFFS: Lost to Boston 4-0 in conference quarterfinals

REVIEW: While the Capitals had wrapped up the Southeast Division race and a trip to the playoffs weeks before the regular season ended, Montreal waited until its final regular-season game to punch its ticket to the postseason.

The Canadiens earned the right to play in this series by gaining the final point it needed in an overtime loss to Toronto on Saturday. It was not an impressive way to enter the playoffs for a team that went just 3-4-4 over its final 11 games.

Yet, heading into this year, a trip to the postseason was certainly not a sure thing for the Habs. They underwent a coaching change as well as a massive roster overhaul in the offseason, making it difficult to determine exactly what kind of success Montreal would have this year. Judging by the regular season, the Canadiens pretty much have the same quality team it did a year ago when it was swept out of the first round by Boston.

Like last year, the Canadiens are the eighth and last seed in the East, although they needed 93 points to claim that distinction in 2008-09 and 88 points to do so this season.

The 2009-10 version of the Habs is a sounder team on defense, but not as explosive on offense. The team also has a new No. 1 goaltender for this postseason with Jaroslav Halak replacing Carey Price, who compiled a 5-10 record and a dismal 3.11 GAA in starting 15 playoff games for Montreal over the past two seasons.

However, Halak, who was named the NHL's first star of the week recently, has played just 20 minutes of playoff hockey in his brief career and has never started a postseason game.

Still, going with Halak as the starter is a no-brainer for head coach Jacques Martin. Halak was 26-13-5 with a 2.40 GAA and a .924 save percentage this year compared to Price, who was just 13-20-5 with a 2.77 GAA and a .912 save percentage.

On June 30, the day before free agency began, the Canadiens landed centerman Scott Gomez in a trade with the New York Rangers. As surprising as that was, it was only the beginning. Gomez came over to Montreal along with a pair of prospects, while the Habs sent four players to the Big Apple, including Christopher Higgins, a three-time 20-goal scorer in the last four seasons with Montreal.

The Canadiens then brought in four new players on the first day of free agency. Two of those new additions, Mike Cammalleri and Brian Gionta, joined Gomez to form Montreal's new offensive core. In order to make room for the new boys, general manager Bob Gainey said goodbye to fan favorites Alex Kovalev and Saku Koivu, marking a changing of the guard.

Although critics of Gainey's moves were right in predicting that the sea change did not improve the Canadiens in any significant way, Montreal is lucky to not have fallen flat on its face as a result of the major alterations.

Gomez was second on the team with 59 points, while Gionta led the club with 28 goals despite playing in just 61 games. Like Gionta, Cammalleri was likely headed to a much bigger year if it wasn't for injuries, notching 26 goals and 50 points in just 65 games.

Meanwhile, Tomas Plekanec stayed healthy and led the club with 70 points (25g, 45a). It was a bounce-back year for the Czech centerman, who had 69 points in 2007-08 only to watch his production fall to 39 points a year ago.

Still, the Habs lack a go-to scorer, although they hope Cammalleri, who has only played six playoff games in his career, can be that guy.

On defense, Montreal is still led by Andrei Markov, who is one of the best all-around blueliners in the NHL. Markov can shut down the opposition in his own end and make them pay when he is in the offensive zone. Limited to just 45 games this year, the dependable Russian still managed to tie Marc-Andre Bergeron for the team lead in points by a defenseman with 34.

Roman Hamrlik, Jaroslav Spacek, Hal Gill and Josh Gorges combine with Markov and Bergeron to give Montreal a deep defense that is the strength of this team.

Montreal's success on the power play is largely due to its skill on the blue line. The club was second to Washington in success with the man advantage this year, scoring 21.8-percent of the time on the power play. However, Montreal was not as good on the penalty kill, finishing in a tie for 11th in the league by foiling 83-percent of the opposition's power-play chances.

MATCHUP
Washington is hoping to get in this year's first round what it was unable to get in the conference quarterfinals last year: an quick and easy series.

The Caps were heavily favored heading to their opening series last year against the Rangers, but fell behind two games to one and 3-1 before eventually moving on with a 2-1 victory in Game 7. The competitive series against New York caused Boudreau to use the quick hook on Theodore and it also had to deliver a serious hit to the team's overall confidence.

Washington needs to get its offense on track early to set the tone for this series. The Caps will be tested by Montreal's strong defensive unit, but Washington doesn't need to be explosive offensively, it simply needs to outscore a pedestrian Canadiens offense.

These clubs, who have never faced in the postseason before, played a very tight season series this year. Each team won two games and only one of the four tilts was decided by more than one goal -- a 4-2 win by Washington on Jan. 5.

Theodore, who won the Hart and Vezina Trophies in 2001-02 while playing for the Canadiens, could be the key for the Capitals in this playoff matchup. He has not fared well in just four career games against his former team, going 2-1-1 with a lofty 4.05 GAA and .877 save percentage. The passionate fans in Montreal will try to get under Theodore's skin, but maintaining composure is a must for the veteran backstop.

Although the Habs trailed Washington by 33 points in the standings at the end of the regular season do not expect this series to be a walk in the park for the Caps. Washington should be able to advance relatively quickly to the next round, but not before being forced to win a few close games.

Predicted outcome: Capitals in 5

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - New Jersey vs. Philadelphia

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - New Jersey vs. Philadelphia

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - New Jersey vs. Philadelphia

NEW JERSEY DEVILS (2nd seed, East)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 48-27-7

2009 PLAYOFFS: Lost to Carolina 4-3 in conference quarterfinals

REVIEW: Perhaps sensing that time is running out to score another Stanley Cup title before the Martin Brodeur era ends, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello took an uncharacteristic risk.

His team already sitting atop the Atlantic Division, Lamoriello pulled off the biggest in-season trade of the 2009-10 campaign, acquiring superstar winger Ilya Kovalchuk from Atlanta. The deal came weeks before the trade deadline, and with Kovalchuk set to become a free agent this summer, he could wind up being nothing more than a rental player.

That means New Jersey's Hall of Fame GM has quite a bit riding on Kovalchuk's playoff performance.

At first it seemed that the standout winger would clash with head coach Jacques Lemaire's defense-first style, but Kovalchuk had a strong 27-game run with New Jersey following the trade, posting 27 points over that stretch with 10 goals and 17 assists. All told, he recorded 41 goals and 85 points in 76 games with the Devils and Atlanta, giving the former No. 1 overall pick his sixth straight season with 40 or more goals.

Kovalchuk will have plenty of pressure to produce in the playoffs and it's hard to predict how well he will play considering he's only skated in four playoff games during his career. His lone trip to the postseason came in the spring of 2007 and it also marked the only time the Thrashers ever qualified for the playoffs. It didn't go well for Kovalchuk or Atlanta, which was swept out of the opening round by the New York Rangers.

Hopefully, Kovalchuk's presence will at least be enough take some heat off fellow left wing Zach Parise, who notched 38 goals and 82 points for New Jersey during the regular season.

The 25-year-old Parise has posted 12 goals and 12 assists in 32 career playoff games, but he was shut down towards the end of last year's series with Carolina and that was a big reason the Hurricanes wound up winning that set in seven games. New Jersey held a 2-1 series lead after Parise notched three goals and five points in the first three games, but Carolina held him to just one assist over the final four tests, three of which were 'Canes victories.

Kovalchuk and Parise gives New Jersey prolific scorers on each of its top-two lines, making it difficult for most teams to stop both of them.

The rest of New Jersey's offensive firepower is derived mainly from steady veterans like captain Jamie Langenbrunner (19 goals, 42 assists) and Travis Zajac (25g, 21a). Patrik Elias sat out the first month of the year due to injury, but he wound up with 48 points (19g, 29a) in 58 games. Elias is New Jersey's most proven playoff performer with 113 points (40g, 73a) in 133 career postseason games.

Even with the likes of Kovalchuk and Parise scoring up front, the Devils are still driven by their ability to play defense and stop pucks. Of course, this strategy is built around Brodeur, the future Hall-of-Famer who is the NHL's all-time leader in wins, shutouts, and too many other categories to mention here.

Brodeur has also won three Stanley Cups, but he hasn't reached the top of the mountain since the spring of 2003. He will turn 38 years old in early May and it's clear that the goaltending legend's career is winding down.

Still, Brodeur showed few signs of aging this season, going 45-26-6 with a 2.24 goals against average, .920 save percentage, and a league-leading nine shutouts.

Brodeur is also very familiar with New Jersey's first-round opponent, the Flyers, having played in 98 career games (regular season and playoffs) against Philadelphia. He has generally had success against the Flyers, but was 1-4-1 with a 3.34 GAA in six games against Philly this season.

As always, the Devils play strong team defense and the club is led on the back end by Paul Martin, who missed 59 games with a broken forearm during the regular season, but he has been back since mid-March.

With Martin out for most of the year, Andy Greene wound up taking a leadership role on the blue line. Greene turned in career-highs in games (78), goals (6) and assists (31). Veterans Colin White, Mike Mottau, Bryce Salvador and Marin Skoula play responsible hockey, but offer little in the way of offense from the blue line.

With Brodeur in net and steady but unspectacular veterans on the back end, the Devils were the best defensive team in the NHL this year, giving up just 191 goals.

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (7th seed, East)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 41-36-6

2009 PLAYOFFS: Lost to Pittsburgh 4-2 in conference quarterfinals

REVIEW: The Flyers' road to the playoffs this year was anything but smooth.

The club fired head coach John Stevens in early December and replaced him with Peter Laviolette. Then, needing a win on the final day of the regular season to make the playoffs, the Flyers posted a shootout victory over the New York Rangers to finally punch their ticket to the postseason.

After going 2-7-1 in their first 10 games under Laviolette, the Flyers posted an 18-7-1 record over their next 26 contests to get back in the playoff race. However, goaltending issues and scoring woes dogged the team down the stretch until the club was able to pull together for three wins in its final four games to secure a playoff spot.

Philadelphia came into this season with Ray Emery as its starting goaltender, but he was lost for the year in early February. Michael Leighton, who was acquired off waivers during the year, thrived as the No. 1 goaltender with Emery gone, but he suffered a high ankle sprain on March 16 and won't be ready to return until the middle of May at the earliest.

That leaves Brian Boucher as the main man between the pipes for Philadelphia, making 2010 seem a lot like the spring of 2000, when Boucher and the Flyers battled New Jersey in the conference finals. Although Boucher was spectacular in 18 games for Philadelphia during that postseason, the Devils wound up winning the series and Boucher hasn't played a full playoff game in the decade since.

Boucher, who played for five different NHL teams other than the Flyers since 2000, was just 9-18-3 in 33 games (26 starts) for Philly this year with a 2.76 GAA and an unimpressive .900 save percentage. If Boucher fails to improve upon those numbers, it will certainly be a short postseason for the Flyers.

The Flyers lost some of their scoring depth in the offseason with the departure of Mike Knuble and Joffrey Lupul and it showed as the club scored 28 goals fewer this season than they did in 2008-09.

Philadelphia's top-two scorers, captain Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, led the team with 62 and 61 points, respectively. Carter also led the team with 33 goals -- two more than Richards -- despite missing eight games after suffering a broken foot on March 21.

Carter returned for the final two games of the regular season and is ready to go for the opening round of the playoffs. However, he will need to improve upon his career playoff numbers for the Flyers' offense to do well against the Devils. Carter has just 12 points (5g, 7a) in 29 career postseason tilts, while Richards has been slightly better, posting 20 points (8g, 12a) in the same number of games.

After Richards and Carter, the Flyers next-best point producer during the regular season was defenseman Chris Pronger. Philly needs forwards like Danny Briere, Simon Gagne, Scott Hartnell and Claude Giroux to step up their scoring in the postseason if it hopes to compete with the Devils.

Speaking of Pronger, when the star defenseman was acquired in a trade with Anaheim this summer he was supposed to be the missing piece in a run to the Stanley Cup Finals. While Pronger had a typical season in his first year with the Flyers, providing points, a booming slap shot and an all-around defensive game, it's hard to say at this stage if he brings the team any closer to a Cup title.

Still, Pronger's size and physical style of play make him a difficult defenseman to face off against in a best-of-seven series.

Kimmo Timonen gives the Flyers another top-flight defenseman other than Pronger and Matt Carle is an offensive threat with a developing game in his own zone. Braydon Coburn and Ryan Parent, once thought to be the pairing of the future for the Flyers, had disappointing seasons on the blue line, but will try to turn it around in the playoffs.

Largely because of Pronger, Timonen and Carle's offensive skills, the Flyers had the third-best power-play unit in the NHL this year. Philly will have to take advantage of its opportunities with the man advantage to gain an edge over the Devils.

MATCHUP
The Flyers won five of the six meetings with the Atlantic Division champion Devils this season, but it's nearly impossible to pick Philadelphia to win this series.

New Jersey has a huge advantage in net with Brodeur over Boucher, who was 1-1 against the Devils this season. The Devils also boast the two best offensive players in this series in Kovalchuk and Parise.

While the Flyers' will certainly be confident thanks to their success against the Devils this year, but it won't be enough to propel them to a series win.

These franchises have faced each other four times in the playoffs with each team winning twice.

The Flyers won the last postseason encounter, earning a 4-1 series' pasting in the opening round of the 2004 playoffs. Expect the shoe to be on the other foot this time around as the Devils overcome their regular-season failings against the Flyers.

predicted outcome: Devils in 6

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Buffalo vs. Boston

BUFFALO SABRES (3rd seed, East)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 45-27-10

2009 PLAYOFFS: Failed to qualify

REVIEW: Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller has already claimed a silver medal this year. The Sabres are hoping he can help them hoist a silver Cup come June.

Already a hero in Buffalo, Miller endeared himself to millions of Americans during Team USA's surprising run to the gold medal game at the Winter Olympics in February. Although the U.S. lost out to Canada for the gold, Miller still skated away with the tournament MVP, proving he could turn in his best performances under enormous pressure.

Miller is Buffalo's biggest asset heading into the playoffs and, without even counting his amazing two-week stretch at the Vancouver Games, he is coming off his best season as a pro. The Michigan native set personal-bests in wins (41), goals-against average (2.22), save percentage (.929) and also tied a career mark with five shutouts. He will likely be a finalist for the Vezina Trophy this year and is starting to rival Vancouver's Roberto Luongo for the unofficial title of Best Goaltender in the World.

Buffalo's No. 1 netminder has also proven himself before in the NHL playoffs, getting the Sabres to the conference finals in back-to-back years in 2006 and '07 only to lose both times. However, Miller and the Sabres failed to make the playoffs in each of the next two years before returning to the tournament with a Northeast Division title this year.

The Sabres didn't add a great deal through free agency over the summer, but the club received big help, literally, in the form of 6-foot-8 rookie defenseman Tyler Myers.

Myers was selected by Buffalo with the 12th overall pick in the 2008 draft, and despite playing in juniors last year, he made a seamless transition to the NHL game this year. In fact, many folks expected the Sabres to send Myers back to his junior club in Kelowna after starting the year in Buffalo, but the mammoth rookie showed early on that he was essential to the big club.

Myers was the highest-scoring rookie defenseman this year with 48 points (11 goals, 37 assists) and he finished tied for 11th among all NHL blueliners. His size and skill have quickly made him Buffalo's top defensemen, although it remains to be seen if the youngster has anything left in the tank for a deep playoff run.

The rest of Buffalo's defensive corps may not have the obvious impact of Myers, but the Sabres also boast solid blueliners in Craig Rivet, Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman. With Miller and the defense protecting the net, the Sabres gave up just 207 goals this year -- the third-best total in the Eastern Conference.

Buffalo has good scoring depth up front with four 20-goal scorers, but with a down year from sniper Thomas Vanek, the club lacked a go-to offensive threat. Vanek averaged 36 goals per season over his first four years in the NHL, but managed to score just 28 times in 71 games this season. With just 12 points (8g, 4a) in 26 career playoff games, Vanek needs to pick up the pace for the Sabres to go deep in this year's postseason.

The Sabres could also use a healthy Tim Connolly for the postseason. Despite missing the final nine games with a foot injury, Connolly still finished second on the team with 65 points (17g, 48a). Buffalo head coach Lindy Ruff is optimistic that Connolly, who has 20 points in 24 career playoff games, will be ready to go for Game 1 against Boston.

Derek Roy led the Sabres this year with 69 points (26g, 43a) and will share the scoring load along with Vanek and Connolly. Jason Pominville, who had 62 points this year, is also a key contributor on offense for Buffalo.

BOSTON BRUINS (6th seed, East)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 39-30-13

2009 PLAYOFFS: Defeated Montreal 4-0 in conference quarterfinals; lost to Carolina 4-3 in conference semifinals

REVIEW: This time last year the Bruins were the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference playoffs, but inconsistent play as well as injuries contributed to Boston's slide down the East ladder.

The biggest change for Boston heading into this postseason is in net, where rookie Tuukka Rask has supplanted last year's Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas as the starting goaltender. Rask went 22-12-5 in 45 games (39 starts) and led the NHL in GAA (1.97) and save percentage (.931).

Rask started 11 of Boston's last 13 games during the regular season and surrendered just eight goals over his last six starts to help the Bruins successfully complete their push to the playoffs. Of course, with no experience in the NHL playoffs, Rask will quickly get replaced with Thomas should his first postseason prove overwhelming for the 23-year-old Finn.

Thomas was 17-18-8 with a .915 save percentage and a 2.56 GAA this year.

The Bruins are led on defense by mammoth blueliner Zdeno Chara, who, at 6- foot-9, is an inch taller than Buffalo's Myers. Chara won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman for the 2008-09 campaign, and although his numbers took a dip this year, the Slovakian is still a force on both ends of the ice.

Despite playing in 80 games this year, Chara, who possesses the game's hardest slapshot, failed to score 10 goals for the first time since the 2002-03 season. However, he did set a career best with 37 assists en route to a 44- point season.

Dennis Wideman is also a solid two-way blueliner for the Bruins, who were the second-best defensive team in the conference with just 200 goals allowed this year.

With two worthy goaltenders and Chara looming on the blue line, the most pressing issue for the Bruins is offense. Boston's 206 goals were the second- fewest in the Eastern Conference this year and the club enters the playoffs without its top offensive weapon in Marc Savard, who is sidelined indefinitely with a concussion.

The absence of Savard, one of the league's most-skilled playmakers, leaves a huge hole in Boston's offense. The team's leading scorers this year were Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, who each compiled just 52 points to beat Chara by just eight points for the club lead.

After Bergeron and Krejci, the Bruins next-best forward in terms of scoring is 42-year-old Mark Recchi, who had 18 goals and 43 points in 81 games.

With the dearth of offense in Boston, it should come as no surprise that the Bruins were 23rd in the league with a 16.6-percent success rate on the power play.

MATCHUP
Neither the Sabres nor the Bruins can claim scoring as their strength, but Buffalo still has a considerable edge on offense in this series. Combine that fact with the way Miller has played this season and the Sabres head into this opening-round series as a clear favorite.

Yet, Boston won four of the six regular-season meetings between the clubs and the Bruins have also claimed five of their seven all-time playoff encounters against the Sabres.

Expect Miller to be the difference in the series, but don't count on him to be as untouchable as he was during the Olympics. Miller was excellent against the Bruins this year, going 2-0-2 with a 1.71 GAA and .947 save percentage in four games. However, Rask also shined during the season series, going 4-1 with a 1.42 GAA in six games against the Sabres.

Unfortunately for the Bruins a serious injury has robbed them of their best offensive weapon, but even with Savard, this much-improved Buffalo squad would likely emerge victorious.

predicted outcome: Sabres in 6

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview - Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS (4th seed, East)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 47-28-7

2009 PLAYOFFS: Defeated Philadelphia 4-2 in conference quarterfinals; defeated Washington 4-3 in conference semifinals; defeated Carolina 4-0 in conference finals; defeated Detroit 4-3 in Stanley Cup Finals

REVIEW: The Pittsburgh Penguins fell short in their quest for the Atlantic Division title, but that should hardly scare anybody away from picking the Pens to repeat as Stanley Cup champions.

Sidney Crosby and his Penguins also failed to win the division title last year and still managed to battle their way to the Cup Finals, where they ultimately defeated Detroit in a thrilling seven-game series.

It was Pittsburgh's third Stanley Cup title and first since winning the second of back-to-back championships in the spring of 1992. This year, the Pens are hoping to become the first NHL club to win consecutive Cups since Detroit pulled off the feat in 1997 and '98.

Although the Penguins are the same team as last year in many ways, the biggest difference has to be Crosby's emergence as a goal-scorer this year. Pittsburgh's captain turned in his first 50-goal season as a pro, potting 51 goals to tie Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos for the league lead. Crosby also tied Washington's Alex Ovechkin for second in the NHL with 109 points.

Crosby, 22, has been a clutch performer throughout his brief but spectacular career. He has tallied 62 points (24 goals, 38 assists) in just 49 career playoff games and added to his legacy by scoring the overtime game-winner for Team Canada in the Olympic gold medal game back in February.

While Crosby added a dimension to his game, Pittsburgh's other superstar center, Evgeni Malkin, suffered through a frustrating regular season. Last year's Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP, Malkin missed 15 games due to injury in 2009-10 and posted career-lows in goals (28), assists (49) and points (77), and finished the season with a minus-six rating.

But, the Russian finished strong to close out the campaign, notching five goals and three assists over his final five games of the season. The Penguins hope that is a sign Malkin is close to returning to the form he displayed last year in the postseason, when he led all skaters with 36 points on 14 goals and 22 assists.

With Crosby and Malkin anchoring the top two lines and fellow center Jordan Staal playing the role of stopper on the third unit, Pittsburgh matches up better than any other team down the middle.

The Penguins can't boast the same star power on the wings, but with the opposition focused squarely on Crosby and Malkin, players like Bill Guerin, Matt Cooke, Ruslan Fedotenko and Chris Kunitz will have plenty of opportunities to seize the spotlight.

Kunitz could be a key in the opening round after playing in just 50 games during an injury-plagued regular season. He managed 32 points (13g, 19a) in 2009-10, and despite still nursing a shoulder injury, is expected to play in Game 1 against Ottawa.

Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury is often lost in the shuffle due to the deserved attention paid to the Penguins' offensive superstars, but the 25- year-old backstop has proved his worth in postseason time and time again. In 49 career playoff games, Fleury has posted a 31-18 record to go with a solid 2.45 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.

Fleury was inconsistent at times during the 2009-10 campaign, posting a save percentage of .905 and a 2.65 GAA to go with a 37-21-6 record. However, the Quebec native has a knack for stepping up in the playoffs when needed most.

Another unsung hero for the Pens is defenseman Sergei Gonchar, one of the best all-around blueliners in the game and the key to Pittsburgh's potent power play. The oft-injured Gonchar had 50 points (11g, 39a) this season, finishing third on the team in scoring despite playing in just 62 games.

Pittsburgh finished 19th during the season with a 17.2 percent success rate on the power play, but that number would've been higher had Gonchar and blossoming blueline talent Alex Goligoski been healthier. Goligoski, who has played in just two career playoff games, had 37 points (8g, 29a) in 69 games this year.

The Pens were ninth in the league at killing penalties, foiling 84.5 percent of the opposition's man-advantage chances.

OTTAWA SENATORS (5th seed, East)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD: 44-32-6

2009 PLAYOFFS: Failed to qualify

REVIEW: Scotiabank Place was noticeably dark last spring as the Ottawa Senators failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time in over a decade.

Heading into the 2009-10 campaign a trip back to the playoffs was anything but set in stone. Perhaps sensing a rebuilding phase the Senators bowed to Dany Heatley's trade demands, dealing the disgruntled winger to San Jose.

And Ottawa indeed appeared to be headed for another year out of the playoffs in mid-January when it was just 22-21-4. That's when the club ripped off a team-record 11 straight wins to not only get themselves into the postseason race, but also challenge eventual Northeast champion Buffalo for the division crown.

All told the Senators posted a 22-11-2 record over the final 35 games to make the playoffs for the 12th time in 13 seasons. Getting past the defending Stanley Cup champions in the first round, however, is another story altogether.

The biggest change for Ottawa this year was the emergence of goaltender Brian Elliott as the main man between the pipes. Elliott anchored the Sens' record winning streak and finished the season with a 29-18-4 record along with a respectable GAA (2.57) and save percentage (.909). Neither Elliott nor his backup Pascal Leclaire have ever played in a Stanley Cup playoff game.

Heatley may be gone but his former linemates, centerman Jason Spezza and team captain Daniel Alfredsson, are still manning the top line for Ottawa. However, Alfredsson, 37, showed signs of aging this year and Spezza had a down year while missing 22 games due to injury.

Alfredsson matched his lowest point total (71) since 2001-02 and also scored just 20 goals, marking his worst output since scoring 11 times during the 1998-99 campaign.

Meanwhile, Spezza continued the slide from his career year of 2007-08. The 26- year-old had 34 goals and 92 points two years ago, then posted 32 goals and 73 points last season before notching 57 points (23g, 34a) in his injury- shortened year this season.

However, while Alfredsson and Spezza's production dropped off, second-line center Mike Fisher notched personal bests in both goals (25) and assists (28).

Ottawa's biggest offseason acquisition turned out to be Milan Michalek, who came from San Jose as part of the Heatley deal. Michalek was third on the team with 22 goals in 66 games during his first year with the Sens.

However, the Sens will not have their highest-profile summer acquisition for the playoffs as veteran winger Alex Kovalev was lost for the season on April 8 with a torn ACL. The skilled Russian was signed to a two-year, $10 million deal in the offseason and although he was inconsistent for much of the season, Kovalev was still Ottawa's fourth-leading scorer this year with 49 points (18g, 31a).

The Senators have to deal with an even bigger injury problem on defense as Filip Kuba could miss the entire postseason after undergoing back surgery. Kuba led Ottawa's blue line in points (28) and was also the team's leader in time-on-ice per game, averaging 22 minutes, 51 seconds per contest.

The Kuba injury will make the tough job of stopping Crosby and Malkin's lines even tougher. Ottawa's top-four defenseman for this series figure to be Anton Volchenkov, Chris Phillips, Erik Karlsson and Andy Sutton.

Volchenkov, Ottawa's physical presence at the back end, missed the final two games of the regular season with an upper-body injury, but is expected back for the start of the series to form the Senators' top pairing along with Phillips. Volchenkov is an excellent penalty killer and is a big reason Ottawa was tanked eighth in the league in that category this year.

Ottawa will need to improve upon its regular-season power play numbers if it wants to compete with Pittsburgh in the opening round. The Sens were 21st in the league with a 16.9 percent success rate on the man advantage.

Without Kuba, the club will count on Karlsson, a 19-year-old rookie, to continue his contributions on the power play. The Swede had 26 points (5g, 21a) on the year and 10 of those points (1g, 9a) came with the man advantage.

MATCHUP
Even with a healthy lineup the Senators would struggle to compete in this opening-round series against a Penguins team that is so difficult to match up with in the playoffs.

The teams split four games during an up-and-down season series. Pittsburgh outscored the Senators, 12-3, in its two victories while Ottawa had a combined 10-3 edge in goals in its wins.

Judging from the season series, the Senators need to do a better job of containing Malkin, who had five goals in four games against Ottawa. Conversely, Crosby would like to improve upon the three assists he managed in his four tests against the Sens this year.

Elliott was 1-0 with a 2.25 GAA in two games against the Pens, while Fleury struggled to a 2-2 mark and a 2.90 GAA in four outings versus Ottawa.

This marks the third time in four seasons that the Pens and Sens will face off in the postseason. Ottawa ousted Crosby and Co. in five games during the opening round of the playoffs in 2007, but Pittsburgh exacted revenge with a sweep in the conference quarterfinals the following spring.

Expect this series to be more like the '08 matchup with the Pens taking advantage of an injury-plagued Ottawa club.

predicted outcome: Penguins in 4
