Looking to go in July with 5 other people and wondering if anyone has been to any of these 2 resorts and if so how are they? Do they have activities like jet skiing, parasailing, etc and are those extra $ to do?

Magestic Coloniel Punta Cana Resort (Junior suite garden view room)
LAX airfare and hotel is $1196 p/p

Magestic Elegance (junior suite pool/garden view room) is $90 p/p more for the package.
Please note package includes: airfare, roundtrip transfers, 7-night hotel stay, all meals , drinks, taxes, entertainment and more!

Is it safe to leave the resort to go to local bars just outside the resort?

I've never been to a resort so how is the scenery as far as the people go? Meaning is it more a couples thing, are there alot of single women, groups?

i went last year for my honeymoon.

The amenities for Majestic Elegance are worth the extra money. Private pool, bali beds, private parties, all access is the way to go. Also private beaches so you always have someone getting you drinks and a place to sit in the shade if you choose.

Also, you can tip the guys doing yard work a $5 and they will climb a coconut tree and get your SO a coconut to make a drink. Was pretty cool.

The steak house was disappointing but the French restaurant and Habachi were good.

I drank chunky monkeys all day, lol.

Practice some basic Spanish, it goes a long way with the bar tenders. :toast:

There is a casino at the Colonial property but I didn't gamble as it was my honeymoon.

Trip advisor has great information regarding Majestic.

Here's my reserach and ITEMS TO TAKE! We both got sick one night after forgetting about the water and brushing our teeth...

SHORT REVIEW:
This is a very nice resort located on a wonderful beach, with warm water and soft sand. The staff are all extremely friendly. All of staff: housekeeping, bartenders, front desk help, bartenders, restaurant workers, bartenders, the entertainers, did I mention the bartenders? The rooms are as nice as the website describes, marble, jet tubs, very nice. The shows at night are funny, almost amateurish, but still worth visiting each evening. The pools and beach are great. No problem getting chairs at the pool or the beach, to get a talapa, you need to go early, but that was not a hassle. The food? Well, if you go in with the expectations of cruise type buffet fare, then it is fine. As you can tell, I highly recommend Majestic Elegance.

PART TWO (LONG REVIEW, WITH PARTS FROM OTHER TRAVELERS):

Go with a good attitude, I guarantee you will have a great time.

We had the best room in the whole resort.

ROOM DESCRIPTION: European marble, king size four posted bed, or two full size beds, complete bathroom, Indoor and outdoor Jacuzzi for two, independent walk in shower with three functions: (Rain, massage and soft), independent room service door, Modern Plasma TV, audio system, independent air conditioning control, ceiling fan, satellite TV, DVD, telephone, hi-speed Internet connection, mini bar, safety deposit box, coffee machine, working desk, iron and ironing board and a nice terrace. Max occupancy 4 adults

INTRODUCTION
Have realistic expectations, the place is beautiful, comfortable and relaxing. It?s also a great value compared to other destinations.

I read other guests had shower drainage problems and mosquitoes, our shower was fine, and we only saw a couple of mosquitoes.

The beach is absolutely stunning! Gorgeous colors and the ocean is the perfect temperature. The Majestic's portion of beach is a little narrow though. As the week went on the resort got busier and the beach was actually a bit crowded. You can walk for miles and miles. The ocean is a bit more fun to play in to the east- bigger waves. Sand is white powder and there are hardly any rocks. Walk to the left 45 minutes and you will make it to a small market that sells junk.

BRING
Sunscreen
Mosquito Repellent
Pepto
Bring a scented candle or air freshener for your room.
Bring DVDs to watch in your room (if you want to see movies?)
Pants and collared shirts- Bring pants and collared shirts since you will need for some of the restaurants.

LANDING/CHECK IN
Remember at check in to ask for towel cards.
The Lobby Downstairs Bar was the best. They had all top-shelf alcohol and the bartenders could make anything you requested. There was also a "scene" there with live music and people watching. Ask for an Expresso Martini.

RESTAURANTS
Flavours: (the Main Buffet): The Breakfast buffet was excellent - huge selection - eggs, omelets, crepes, smoothies, assorted pastries - the works.....but it closes at 10am.
We never ate at the buffet for lunch or dinner - but it's safe to assume the selection was decent.

Sea and Sea: This is very convenient to the beach. You can go in there casually dressed - but you must have a cover-up on if you are in a swimsuit. This is where we ate breakfast and lunch most days. For breakfast they had eggs, fruit, breads, cold cuts, pancakes, French toast, bacon, sausage and more.
The best thing to do is get omelets/eggs made to order. That guarantees your meal to be hot and prepared how you like it. For lunch - they had burgers, hot dogs, fries, chicken, fresh fish cooked-to-order, cold cuts, and fruit. It is a seafood restaurant at night, but we never ate there for dinner.

Steak House: The Cowboy Steak was the best because it was grilled. The side dishes were below average (carrots, corn, and potatoes). The desserts were average.

Japanese: Excellent. The hibachi show was fun and very tasty. You need a reservation. It was too salty for us, so the second time we had them hold the salt, and it was better. The sushi bar was good too (no reservation required for sushi). They had a lot of unique sushi-type rolls...such as plantain, cheese, mango....all delicious.

Italian: the appetizers/salads were good.

Restaurant Suggestions: Best breakfast for views and atmosphere: Without a doubt, the Sea and Sea. Eat on the deck and enjoy the view! Secret: order a cappuccino!

Reservations are only necessary at the French and Japanese restaurants.

BARS

Every bartender was friendly. Some were quite entertaining. The bartender in the steakhouse was fun.

The Lobby Bars were the best. They had all top-shelf alcohol and the bartenders could make anything you requested. There was also a "scene" there with live music and people watching. Ask for an Espresso Martini.

There are no cocktail menus....so brush up on the names of your favorite drinks! You can ask the bartenders to make their specialty. It's always fun to see what you get. If you don't like it, you can always get something new! The wines were not very good. The Presidente beer was nice.

The Swim Up Bar had three slushy drinks: The Majestic (orange), The Banana.Mamma, and The Coco Loco (coconut). They can add whatever alcohol you choose. We tried rum. They were tasty, but sweet. You really could only have one or two. Also, Presidente beer and a few other liquors for things like rum and coke, gin and tonic, etc. (not top shelf).

The Outside Plaza bar near the Gazebo is a great place to grab a drink and sit outside before/after meals.

The Theater Bar was similar to the other bars....not top shelf, but decent.

Drinks we recommend: The Majestic, Mojitos at the Lobby Bar. You have to try the Mammajuana! If it's not the national drink of the Dominican Republic, it should be! We're not exactly sure what it is...but it is a shot that sort of tastes like cinnamon.

MISCELLANEOUS SUGGESTIONS
There was a blow-dryer with a diffuser, an iron and ironing board, and extra pillows.

Bring insulated mugs if you plan to drink at the beach/pool. They will happily fill them. They are a much better alternative to the small plastic cups at the beach/pool bars.

Bring tip money, small bills.

Water- Is all purified except for faucets. Be careful when brushing teeth. You can get as many free bottles of water as you request.

Always use the deadbolt on your door, maids may walk in.

Gym: nice, even though I never made it there!

(Stock is two Presidente beer, two chocolate bars, 4 waters and 4 sodas.). If we didn?t drink our beer one night, we hid them so we?d get more the next day. (Chocolate bars too)

Ice machines are near the rooms on each floor.

Print out the Majestic Passport and take it with you.

Remember at check in to ask for towel cards. We had to go back for them. You get one card per person. There is a "towel hut" in the pool area. At the end of the day, turn your used towel in for a new card.

The Room Safe:
Our safe worked fine, another couple had some problems with their safe, the directions were posted.

The Beach
Waiters take drink orders on the beach. If you don't see them, The Sea and Sea restaurant is just a short walk away.

There was no shortage of lounge chairs - but if you want a palapa (thatched umbrella) - you need to wake up early and reserve one. On a sunny day, they are gone by 8am. Bring a towel and fold the chair-back onto the seat. Members of the

There are good water sports - catamarans, sea kayaks, snorkeling equipment, windsurfers.

The Shows:
- Two examples: A "battle of the couples" and the "Michael Jackson Show".
- The Couples show was hysterical - but it's not for people who are easily offended by sexual innuendo. Couples were chosen from the audience and they had to play games -such as pop balloons against each other in suggestive positions and re-enact the final dance in Dirty Dancing.
- The Michael Jackson show was amateurish. The staff impersonated Michael Jackson and the dance routines in his videos. The impersonations were spot-on and the dancers were very talented...

Housekeeping:
- Our rooms were usually made when we were at he beach (between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
- The rooms were straightened out, but not necessarily spotlessly cleaned every day.
- We always received clean towels and they replenished toiletries daily.
- We tipped housekeeping everyday. We left it on the bed.
- There is a room service closet in your room. This is where you put your room service dishes/left over?s. Housekeeping can access it from the hallway without disturbing you.
- The beverage cart came nightly at around 6pm. (We never used it.) It was helpful to be in the room because they asked you what you wanted. We were able to get bottles of champagne, beer, red/white wine, water, soda, etc. Since the fridge is small, it was better to pick what you wanted rather than waste space on stuff you don't drink.

Room Service:
- We ordered it once....got burgers, fries. I heard delivery time varies, ours was prompt.

The Gym:
- The downstairs facility was clean and had excellent equipment....free weights, elliptical machines, treadmills, spin bikes. Towels, water and music were provided.
- Upstairs there were two rooms for classes - the spin room and what looked like a yoga room still under construction.

The Spa:
- This is the best kept secret at the Majestic Resorts! We had one day of non-stop rain so we got massages at the Spa at The Colonial. They were excellent!! Very professional-comparable to any massages we've had at spas in the USA. We were the only ones there - out of both resorts.
- Remember to bring your swimsuits and beach towels to the spa. You can spend as much time as you like in the spa's private pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna!

The Disco:
- We dropped in for a couple of dances after dinner. It was very loud and was a little over-board on the strobe-lights and fog machine. It seemed to get more crowded as we were leaving. If you're into a late-night scene, it's the place to be.
CHECK OUT THE MEN'S URINALS!

Dress Code:
- The restaurants at The Elegance are very nice. People seemed to dress up at night. We didn't see too many people in jeans. Men wore long pants, collared shirts and closed shoes. Women wore dresses or stylish dress pants with sandals. You can wear a swimsuit with an appropriate cover-up to the buffets and the See-and-Sea (for breakfast and lunch). They will not seat you if you're just wearing swimwear.

The casino was small, we never tried it, but it probably was fun.

We only left the resort once, to go to the nearby market. It was a ten minute walk. Good for cheap souvenirs and you need to barter or you will pay too much.

- The upstairs lobby bar has board games to check out, including chess, Connect 4, Scrabble and Monopoly.

I played golf at Punta Blance. If you've seen Thunderdome then you get the idea of what life is like off the resort. I wouldn't go anywhere without an escort or a resort tour person.

As for single women, I was on my honeymoon so I didn't notice any. Lots of couples.

Dont' have a lot of bad things to say about the Majestic Elegance. Woodson covered more than most of the experience there. My wife and I went there and it was very quiet and had everything you wanted. If you are looking for a cancun like place with crazy partying that is not the place for u. It is really a couples/honeymoon place.

FYI:
Thunderstorms will shut down power (especially at night).
Internet available if you wanted to bring your laptop.
WiFi wasn't the best, but pretty good for the DR.

Watch the tides on the beach, very bad when we went.
Never leave the resort. (even when the hotels property ends)
Michael jackson show was great!

OH YEA!

AN ABSOLUTE MUST:

Bring insulated mugs if you plan to drink at the beach/pool!!!

This was the best thing ever! We brought nice $20 22 ounce tall boys from Target.

EVERYONE asked us where we got them. At the end of the stay we gave them to a couple bartenders who acted as if they were bars of gold. Some of these people working there are bussed in for months on end and are away from their families.

Have fun!

go to target and get a few blow up tubes/floats so you can float around at the swim up bar. we were the talk of the resort. i got the real cheap one that didn't take up much room in packing, plus it is something cheap enough that you can just leave there.

my wife and I did the Excellence Punta Cana resort a couple years ago. I would recommend it to anyone. Big thing for me was a decent selection of different restaurants since we were there for more than a week and didn't want to be going to the same place.

Woodson does a good job of explaining the basics for any resort you are going to be at there. Definitely do some of the excursions off the resort, they are worth the price. However, your resort will have particular guides they let sell out of their lobby, use those guys. Don't book any such excursions from guys just walking up off the beach.

Oh, and our resort above had a little casino. I would stear clear of that.

Great info, guys!! Thanks so much! That answers alot of questions. Looks like we're going to the Magestic Coloniel Punta Cana Resort.

2muchchalk: So the Magestic Resort is more of a couples/honeymoon type place? That sucks because there's going to be 4 dudes and then my friend and his wife. I was hoping it'd be somewhat of a party place with single women.

Woodson: What kind of extra activities did you do? How much extra $$ would you say to bring for tips, extra activities and whatever else?

Great info. I would emphasize several points. The long pants are a must if you take any tours of DR historic churches. Shorts not allowed.

Wear sneakers or sandals as the locals can be very agressive with their shoeshines. Had on suede mocs and some kid comes up and starts polishing my shoes without me asking(for a tip).

Get a local guide. We got ours by asking at an upscale retail shop. Spoke great english and we never had any trouble with the many beggars and hustlers on the street.

DO NOT get off the beaten path. The hustlers are very persuasive and charming. May even follow you just hoping for a moment to catch you off guard. One continued to follow us until we stopped and obviously pointed him out

Side note for all visiting this thread that have been to the DR. Did you notice and know why there were so many amputees? Begging is a way of life there and amputees get the most money given to them by the tourists. It's a business decision.
(I can't stand O'bama's and his congress's decisions, but America is the best place on earth to live.)

I'm going July 14-22. I'll definitely give you a report on how it goes.

So you never left the resort to go to any of the bars nearby?

How much extra $$ do you think is good to bring for anything extra there?

i normally just bring like 100 one dollar bills for the airport, driver, bar, bags....etc. It will come in very handy.
there was a bar every few feet there anyway. There are no "bars" outside the place, mostly just open space.
