As Congress investigated its role in the doomed Deep Horizon oil rig, Halliburton donated $17,000 to candidates running for federal office, giving money to several lawmakers on committees that have launched inquiries into the massive spill.

The Texas-based oil giant?s political action committee made 14 contributions during the month of May, according to a federal campaign report filed Wednesday ? 13 to Republicans and one to a Democrat. It was the busiest donation month for Halliburton?s PAC since Sept. 2008.

Of the 10 current members of Congress who got money from Halliburton in May, seven are on committees with oversight of the oil spill and its aftermath.

Halliburton?s political contributions in May are the highest they?ve been since September 2009, when the PAC also gave $17,000 in donations. In fact, the last time the company gave more than $17,000 in one month was when it donated $25,000 during the heat of the presidential campaign in September 2008.

About one week before executive Timothy Probert appeared before the House Energy and Commerce?s investigative subcommittee, Halliburton donated $1,500 to Ranking Republican Joe Barton?s (R-Texas) re-election effort. It was Halliburton?s second-largest donation of the month ? topped only by $2,500 to former Rep. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), who is running for the Senate.

In the Senate, Republican Mike Crapo (Idaho), who serves on the Environment and Public Works committee, Johnny Isakson (Ga.), who serves on the Commerce committee and Richard Burr (N.C.), who serves on the Energy and Natural Resources committee all got $1,000. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) also got $1,000.

In the House Reps. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), who serves on Energy and Commerce, Mike Coffman (R-Colo.), who serves on Natural Resources, Geoff Davis (R-Ky.) and Dave Camp (R-Mich.) all received $1,000 from the oil giant.

Rep. Dan Boren (D-Okla.), the only Democrat who got Halliburton?s money, is on the House Natural Resources committee.

Republican Steve Pearce, running for a House seat he once occupied in New Mexico, and Ohio Republican Senate candidate Rob Portman also got donations from Halliburton.

Federal election law permits company PACs to donate to whomever they like, including lawmakers that are investigating their industry. A spokesman for Halliburton asked all questions to be submitted in writing, and the company did not respond to two e-mails with questions regarding Halliburton?s political donations.

Halliburton made the cement casings on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, and some experts have said the casings contributed to the cause of the disaster. Halliburton, in congressional testimony, has said it followed the orders of BP.

During World War II there was over 10 million barrels of oil spilt from ships, and no natural catastrophe. ? We will lose some birds, we will lose some fixed sealife, but overall it will recover.

Thanks KC. That's gotta be the funniest thing I've read today. Seriously, wtf is a "national phenomena"? :142smilie

This is pretty funny too: BP CEO Tony Hayward wants his life back. There's NO END to the arrogance of these guys.

And then we have this...

When BP CEO Tony Hayward lamented that he wanted his "life back," Keith Jones took notice. A petition started by Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.), calling for Hayward's termination, gave Jones a chance to speak out.

"My son died aboard the Transocean Deepwater Horizon. That's whose life Tony Hayward ought to want back," Jones wrote in signing the petition.

Jones' son Gordon, the father of two himself, died when the rig exploded on April 20.

All of you Big Oil haters should BOYCOTT by not driving your car for a week.

JMHO.

Did you see anyone in this thread say they hated big oil?

I do believe this is about the Corps who play fuckity fuck for an extra dollar instead of personal safety and the environment.

And yes flat dick, I can go a week with out driving, just not until mid November now. I bet you couldn't walk 1 mile under 15 mins

Typical Skulnik response. You have no respect for the environment, no respect for the people who's lives are being turned upside down by this disaster, no respect for wildlife and wetlands, no respect for anyone or anything, not even yourself. What you are is a coward.

I think what most of us should do is boycott BP, period. Their flippant attitude and irresponsible behavior towards the situation is reprehensible. I also don't think Obama is being tough enough, or acting fast enough on this thing. It seems nobody wants to get their hands greasy.

I've boycotted BP since April 20th and my boycott is permanent. I agree with you on Obama. People keep comparing this to Katrina though and they're not the same. Katrina was a natural disaster and the federal government HAD to take ownership of it (even though Bush resisted). Deepwater Horizon is a man-made disaster and I think the Obama Administration made a calculated decision early on NOT to take ownership of this.

IMO though, that decision (while politicically expedient) didn't show leadership. Obama should have taken the bull by the horns, but once again, he did the "safe" thing and I think it's costing him some political capital.
