USC's football program banned from postseason play for two seasons, will lose scholarships: report

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES - The NCAA has decided to ban Southern California's football team from the postseason for two years and strip the program of scholarships, according to multiple reports.

The Los Angeles Times reported the NCAA sanctions include the loss of more than 20 scholarships. ESPN.com reported Wednesday night that the Trojans will forfeit wins "from at least the 2004 season."

USC is also expected to face probation and possible limits on football recruiting contacts after the NCAA's four-year investigation into the school.

The NCAA's report could be released Thursday, although school officials wouldn't confirm Wednesday they had received the NCAA's report or planned to address it when it was made public.

The NCAA infractions committee held a hearing with USC officials last February, and its report has been expected weekly since April.

USC's penalties are expected to stem primarily from widespread allegations of improper benefits for Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Reggie Bush during his three seasons at the school. The NCAA, the Pac-10 and even the FBI conducted investigations into the Bush family's business relationships and USC's responsibility for the culture around its marquee football team.

The Trojans' football team won seven straight Pac-10 championships and two national titles during the past decade under Pete Carroll, who left to coach the NFL's Seattle Seahawks after last season.

No BCS conference football programs have been banned from postseason play over the past seven years, but the NCAA has been expected to make an example of USC, one of the highest-profile programs in the country.

USC's players are expected to be told about the sanctions at a meeting Thursday morning.

"For real it's out of our hands but I'm praying that the things they are saying aren't true," senior linebacker Malcolm Smith wrote on his Twitter account Wednesday night.

Last year, the NCAA reportedly bundled its Bush probe with its look into the men's basketball program. USC self-sanctioned the basketball program four months ago over its recruitment of former player O.J. Mayo by former coach Tim Floyd, who was accused of giving cash to a middleman who helped steer Mayo to USC. The Trojans banned themselves from postseason play last season, reduced their scholarships and limited their recruiting.

but then he jumps ship without even a smooze period from the seahawks? he didnt need binoculars to see this coming down the pipeline, he got out of dodge

Big deal. When TCU was put on probation back in the 80s, they were given 3 yr probation, 2 year bowl ban, 2 year loss of tv revenue and 25 scholarships spread over two years.

USC will still get there tv revenue and BCS check at the end of the year. This won't hurt their program at all.

I think you're very wrong. Losing 20 scholarships and limiting contact with recruits is going to cripple their program. They're going to have a hard time getting any top recruits to go there while this is going on. Sucks for the new Pac 16.

Okay, to stay on topic. yes, I believe this is why Pete Carroll left. I said back when this first began that I thought Pete Carroll would bolt and he did.

can anyone tell me which year they hoisted their "SECOND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP"????
i'm pretty sure the ncaa rules state that the winner of the BCS TITLE GAME is the ncaa champ and i only recall sc winning one of those....which is now in question.

funny, they get that title stripped and sc and sc media whores will still get it wront and talk about sc's 4 national championships won in the 2000's

This will cripple the program. I feel bad for the incoming recruits who will be bound to transfer rules, total BS. Anyone remember when this happened to Miami, and it took them years to recover from a lesser penalty I think. How you like me now Lane Kiffin, and I am sure the UT faithful are laughing last.

I take back what I said about this not being a big deal. I didn't realize that Jrs and Srs would be allowed to leave and it was going to be 30 scholarships lost.

I figured it would be like when A&M was put on probation back in the 90s. A&M didnt' skip a beat and came in first in the SWC, but couldn't go to the Cotton Bowl. It didn't stop them from getting talented players and staying relevant.

USC may take five or six years to get going again.

Joe, I agree that was more than I thought it would be but letting juniors and seniors go will destroy this program(if a few decide to leave).

Pete absoulutely knew what was coming down the pike, and he left accordingly.

The one person that really should be held to the fire is Reggie Bush .

He took and took and took. Got his family jobs which they didnt go to, bought Cadallacs using his mothers name, and on and on.

Its a disgrace what he did to USC.

Wherever Scott4USC is right now, he is
crushed and crying in a closet somewhere deep in his parents basement.

So. Cal
here's what i dont understand

can the legal system go after bush for income tax evasion????

wouldnt the money and gifts he took, be considered "income"??

id bet there was no way in hell he declared any of that "income" so he either owes back taxes and or jail time for false income tax returns

anyone know if this type of charge can be brought against him?

..................................................................

It wont affect Reggie at all and he knew it.

His problem was how to start collecting the millions before he got out of college.

So he did it the dirty way. The wrong way.

Even if it was investigated they would say OK Reggie we find you havnt paid over 3 milliion dollars in income tax for all the gifts you received at USC.

He would pay the 3 million and walk away laughing knowing he got exactly what he wanted.

the free ride started sooner and he didnt care two chits about consequences for the athletes that would come after him.

I have read Signees are transferring already.

Lane Kiffen has shit his pants for taking a job with a better quality program than Tennessee.

Hmm, looks like Juniors and Seniors being able to leave might be a backdoor way of helping USC recover from this in a more timely manner. If enough Juns and Sens leave they will have more scholarships available over the next two years. This will allow them to recruit higher number of guys so that in two years they'll have a fairly large number of recruits still there while also allowing the frosh and sophs more playing time as well as the new recruits coming in.
