Redskins defensive end will not be at minicamp
Have the Washington Redskins seen the last of Albert Haynesworth?
On Tuesday, hours after Redskins general manager Bruce Allen said, "He'll be here," referring to Wednesday's mandatory minicamp, the agent for the disgruntled defensive tackle told the Washington Post that Haynesworth will not be at Redskins Park and is demanding a trade.
"He has made it clear to me that he does not want to play for the Washington Redskins," Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, said.
Haynesworth, a tackle in 4-3 defensive sets in his seven years in Tennessee and last year with Washington, is said to be unhappy with new coach Mike Shanahan's switch to a 3-4 defense. Nose guards in 3-4 schemes have little freedom to stunt, create havoc and rush the passer.
Often hurt last year, Haynesworth wasn't particularly productive in a 4-3, missing four games, and finishing with 30 tackles, eight assists, and four sacks.
The absence of Haynesworth during voluntary workouts this spring has been conspicuous. The Redskins reportedly shopped the 6-foot-5, 350-pounder before the NFL Draft, but couldn't find a satisfactory deal. One NFL source, who has worked in front offices, said he'd be worth a second-round pick.
Complicating any efforts to trade Haynesworth is his massive contract. When he signed as a free agent with the Redskins in February of 2009, it made him one of the richest players in the league. The seven-year deal was for $100 million, nearly a third of which he has already collected from the team.
Earlier this spring, Haynesworth was reportedly the target of a $10 million lawsuit, filed by an exotic dancer who claimed she was impregnated and abandoned by the two-time All-Pro. She claimed their liaison occurred during Super Bowl week.
Haynesworth's absence will undoubtedly be the talk of minicamp Wednesday and Thursday. It's a distraction Shanahan was hoping to avoid as he attempts to get the Redskins off to a fresh start.
