Redskins defensive end will not be at minicamp

Have the Washington Redskins seen the last of Albert Haynesworth?

On Tuesday, hours after Redskins general manager Bruce Allen said, "He'll be here," referring to Wednesday's mandatory minicamp, the agent for the disgruntled defensive tackle told the Washington Post that Haynesworth will not be at Redskins Park and is demanding a trade.

"He has made it clear to me that he does not want to play for the Washington Redskins," Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, said.

Haynesworth, a tackle in 4-3 defensive sets in his seven years in Tennessee and last year with Washington, is said to be unhappy with new coach Mike Shanahan's switch to a 3-4 defense. Nose guards in 3-4 schemes have little freedom to stunt, create havoc and rush the passer.

Often hurt last year, Haynesworth wasn't particularly productive in a 4-3, missing four games, and finishing with 30 tackles, eight assists, and four sacks.

The absence of Haynesworth during voluntary workouts this spring has been conspicuous. The Redskins reportedly shopped the 6-foot-5, 350-pounder before the NFL Draft, but couldn't find a satisfactory deal. One NFL source, who has worked in front offices, said he'd be worth a second-round pick.

Complicating any efforts to trade Haynesworth is his massive contract. When he signed as a free agent with the Redskins in February of 2009, it made him one of the richest players in the league. The seven-year deal was for $100 million, nearly a third of which he has already collected from the team.

Earlier this spring, Haynesworth was reportedly the target of a $10 million lawsuit, filed by an exotic dancer who claimed she was impregnated and abandoned by the two-time All-Pro. She claimed their liaison occurred during Super Bowl week.

Haynesworth's absence will undoubtedly be the talk of minicamp Wednesday and Thursday. It's a distraction Shanahan was hoping to avoid as he attempts to get the Redskins off to a fresh start.

What to look for at Redskins camp

Three things we'll be paying attention to at Redskins minicamp:

How teammates react to Albert Haynesworth's latest demand ? Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, announced late Tuesday that Haynesworth will hold out of minicamp and is demanding a trade. For weeks, the $100-million man has expressed frustration at playing nose tackle in the 3-4 defense. But this is much (ahem) bigger than Haynesworth. Mike Shanahan is firmly in control of things at Redskins Park. He will get rid of you if you aren't buying into his system. And, frankly, Haynesworth's teammates won't want him around if he isn't buying in anyway.

Andre Carter at linebacker ? We haven't seen enough of him in this role as he's coming off surgery. But others have looked good, particularly Lorenzo Alexander. Carter must get used to dropping into coverage and reading plays from a different position. He has more to read at linebacker. Can he handle a role he struggled with in San Francisco? The Redskins will use him differently at linebacker than the Niners did, but he won't rush every play.

Receiver ? Rookie Terrence Austin will get his first work here since the May 9 minicamp. He could not return until his class at UCLA had graduated. Will he show anything? It's tough to ask considering how much workout time he's missed, but a flash or two would provide a glimpse of what he might be able to do. And can he run past guys? Also, how are Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly progressing? One of them must come through for the Redskins' offense to evolve. There are doubts about both players.

I DON'T THINK THEY WILL MISS HIM SINCE HE UNDER ACHIEVED LAST YEAR...IF YOUR NOT A TEAM PLAYER I HAVE NO USE FOR YOU AND HOPEFULLY THEY CAN PICK UP BETTER TALENT IN A TRADE...
