Wifey and I just bought a new house. Fixing it up and have it looking pretty nice. The roof however is covered with that black mold that looks absolutley awful. I have always heard that a water and bleach mix in a lawn sprayer will take it off. Is that the best solution or does anyone have any other advice on how to get rid of it. Thanks in advance.

It is relatively simple to remove with a power washer.
Be careful that you use the right nozzle though or you'll damage the shingles. A lawn sprayer will not give you the necessary pressure needed to clean it properly.

power washer worked wonders thanks zoomer. I sprayed the bleach/water combination first and then power washed it and looks almost new.

Actually I think it is a type of Algae - came from South America in the 30's and has been in North America since - so I am told - if this is what you are talking about.......

Please elaborate if you get a chance....

Gloeocapsa Magma, is a type of algae that thrives in humid and warm climates and usually appears first on the North slope of the roof where shade is prevalent and moisture tends to accumulate. The result is usually a black streaked roof. Roof moss is more prevalent in the Pacific Northwest and Canada and it is an actual moss growth like what can be found on a tree or rock. Roof algae and moss spores are carried by the wind until all roofs in the area are infested.

So - pressure washing just gets rid of the algae. Doesn't mean it is gone.

You have to do a thorough cleaning of the roof and there are a few options - the best one is this......

Ace Hardware sells this cleaner called Spray and Forget - basically it eats the algae to pieces and kills it off for good. It does what it the product is named. Spray your roof and forget it. Two of my co-workers used it and one had the algae removed within the next day. The other's disappeared after three months. Neither have had the problem since and for one of them it has been over two years.

The homeowners association of one of my co-workers told him there is a service that did it called Algae B Gone. Apparently it is a franchise and could probably found in your area or near your area.

That guys HOA said to use the service, but found the alternative at a much cheaper price.

Anyway - the guy at Ace Hardware said to spray it on and in about 6 months, it would be gone for good.

It worked faster that 6 months......
