What is a victory in Afghanistan?

"After years of war, we have arrived at a critical moment," Petraeus said. "We must demonstrate to the Afghan people ? and to the world ? that al-Qaida and its network of extremist allies will not be allowed to once again establish sanctuaries in Afghanistan from which they can launch attacks on the Afghan people and on freedom-loving nations around the world."

What does victory mean to you?

So how do you win that? Any time we say "we win" and they establish a sanctuary then attack someone, are we back to where we were? My point is, there is no winning this "war". There isn't a state that will concede or work out some form of a truce. You are fighting a war against a rogue group of nomads that are not readily identifiable.

Furthermore, if you want to take the other side, you can say we have already won (based on the statement). We have demonstrated that we wouldn't allow them to set up shop in Afghanistan. Now, let's get the fuck out and have a parade. Leave behind a pictures of nuclear weapons so they know what happens next.

Not against the goal. Just against the way he is going about it.

victory- 1) the defeat of an opponent or enemy 2) success in a difficult situation.

...and what does that look like in Afghanistan? Good luck skippy. The rich get richer and the middle class disappears. American kids die and innocent civilians get murdered.

Take your pick. They are both not running a war but spending my money trying to build a country or two. Doing nothing but carrying out the Neocon Manifesto.

Disagree.Must I explain or is it easy to see?I think if you take a look at both generals the in it to win is from the heart.

As far as McCrystal Rolling Stone says everything.
Also check Petraeus resume most notably Iraq.

Why shouldn't he at least be giving a chance to turn the tide in the conflict.

Turn what tide? We already threw the Taliban out. Now they are coming back. What makes you think if we throw them out again they won't come back? How many times and homay trillions of dollars are you willing to waste on this?

The forgotten war when things shifted to Iraq they moved back in that was a mistake.
