I've been a customer of PNC for years and have belonged to two credit unions as well. I never considered the service I received at the credit unions anywhere near that I received from PNC.

My nearest PNC branch is almost 200 miles away and I still maintain my accounts there. The only thing I've encountered that required my physical presence was to change the name on my accounts upon my marriage and to add my husband's signature. From where things are right now, I can only hope to have them acquire a local bank or open branches nearer to me. Until then, I'll continue to have my pay direct deposited, use my "no fee" debit card and free online banking. My husband and I do maintain a money market account at a local bank in order to have quick access to funds that are occasionally needed but we're able to transfer money from that account to PNC electronically with no fees, as well! It would take a major f'up to make me change banks!

I have accounts at Wachovia and a credit union and I love the credit union. Got a great mortgage rate and a great rate on a car loan. There are only a handful of branches but that's not important to me as I do my banking online.

So I'm debating on going to a credit union and leaving PNC. I'm looking for input, do you think CU's are better or worse than a big name bank??

CU's can usually - USUALLY get you better rates. Easier to work with .

CU's are member owned - not a corporate profit machine.

CU's are supposed to be better than a bank - not all are though. Hope this helps.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I think a lot of the people who prefer credit unions like them because they feel the customer service is better, and they like that they are smaller. I've never used one so I honestly don't have an opinion on them, but I've heard that a lot of them have higher fees than what you will typically see at a bigger bank.

Personally, I've banked with BofA for the last 12 years or so. I know big banks get a bad rap right now because of everything that's going on, but I don't pay any fees at all with them. And the customer service is kind of a non-factor for me because I only use the ATM (although when I've gone into the bank it's been fine).

Probably most importanly, about 10 years ago somebody hacked into my PayPal account and withdrew money that was linked to my BofA account. PayPal refused to help out in any way, but BofA put the money back in my account, no questions asked. So after that, I'm pretty much a customer for life.

Thanks everyone for the input. I actually did bring up the question about having ID stolen and heard having a big bank would be better as far as having money replaced. thanks again

Ask your insurance agent about identity theft.

I have it - cost me $36 year - if someone uses my ID to obtain anything, I make one call and things are underway to repair any damage and I sit back and wait for them to tell me it's all good.
