The D-backs are on the verge of completing a deal that would send reliever Chad Qualls to the Rays in exchange for a player to be named later, according to a baseball source.

The D-backs will not have to include any cash in the deal with the Rays picking up the roughly $1.6 million Qualls is owed for the rest of the season.

Arizona has actively shopped Qualls, who began the year as the team's closer, but has struggled to find any consistency and is 1-4 with an 8.51 ERA in 42 games. The right-hander, who makes $4.185 million this year will be eligible for free agency at the end of the season.

The D-backs acquired Qualls along with Juan Gutierrez and Chris Burke from the Astros in December of 2007 in a deal that sent Jose Valverde to Houston.

A change of scenery might be of benefit but, he has been the worse pitcher in the league thus far this year. He is soley responsible for at least five AZ games going over the total after the eight inning this year. I don't think he has gotten an out in a pressure situation all year.

His only save was on April 7th with a two run lead and his win came when he pitched a scoreless ninth down a run.

I just hope he doesn't pitch today as I'm already on the Rays.

The D-backs are expected to receive D.J. Carrasco, Bobby Crosby and Ryan Church from the Pirates in the pending deal for Chris Snyder, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.

The Pirates will also receive an unidentified minor leaguer in the deal. This was mostly just a salary dump move for the D-backs, as Crosby and Church are of little use to them. Carrasco is a somewhat useful reliever, though. Snyder is due just under $1.5 million the rest of this season and $5.75 million in 2011, with a $6.75 million club option for 2012 that includes a $750,000 buyout. It's not clear yet how much money the D-backs will be sending to the Pirates in the deal.
