This trade seems to me like the Phillies made a mistake in this deal.
Living in Houston I have seen enough of Oswalt to know what he is gonna do.
JA Happ is a left handed pitcher who went 12-4 with a 2.93 era in '09. This year he was out with a injury but is 2-0 with a 1.27 in 4 starts.
Lefties are tough to give up much less quality ones. They also gave up 2 19 year prospects they consider MLB quality in the future.
Oswalt has always said he may not pitch beyond this contract which now expires after 2011 season since he had to waive 2012 player option.
He is a hunter and said he doesn't want to be a broken down man the rest of his life.
Is a guy who has seen his era get worse every season for the past 5 years and has a high contract(even though Hou picked up some) worth a quality lefty and two serious prospects for a season and a half?
It is not like he has a track record as a step it up post season guy either. He did step it up in the '05 NLCS vs Cards going 2-0 with a 1.29 era but was hit hard in only WS game vs Chi giving up 5 in 6 innings.
He did not have a good NLCS in '04 vs Cards getting no decision in 2 starts with a 6.75 era.
I think Phillies would have been just fine in trusting the younger Happ. I guess when you can throw money around like the Phillies then you don't have to worry about holding on to younger talent.
