Victory Lane
D.J. Shockley

has been given his release from the Falcons so he can got to Canada or catch on with a NFL club.

Real disappointment coming out of Georgia. He was hurt alot, but could not transfer his skills into the NFL.

John Parker Wilson looks to be a future NFL QB
from the limited times I have seen him. Should see him quite a bit mopping up the pre season games.

Patriots-Saints Morning Practice:

--Pats Pulpit

(cough, cough) Hello, Mr. Boss? Can't come in today (sniffle, cough) I'm sick. I'll try to make it in (cough, hack) tomorrow, okay? See ya.

That conversation took place in the stores, offices, garages and workshops of the thousands of fans that packed the field behind Gillette Stadium this morning to watch the Patriots and Saints practice. Our group took a vacation day for the privilege, and sweltering-melting heat aside, it was awesome to watch.

We arrived at 8:30 with players from both teams already on the field in full pads, milling around, playing catch, and just loosening up and chatting for the first 15 minutes or so before stretching and warm-ups.

9:00 AM - Saints have the far field, Patriots near the bleachers. Each field was broken in half by offense and defense for drills at jog-through speed. Belichick was clearly running the defense here, calling plays and letting the defense jog through the play.

9:15 AM - The team separated for position-specific drills, DL, DBs, STs, QBs with WRs, RBs, OL, and TEs. Interestingly, the O-Linemen kept their usual spot on the far field all the way to the right.

* We caught BB on the sidelines with buddy Jon Bon Jovi, Sean Payton, Robert Kraft and Belichick's sons. Got some great pics too. What tipped me off that he might be there was hearing Bon Jovi's "Have a Nice Day" booming from the speakers during warm-ups.

9:30 AM - The near field broke into two drills, with the Patriots running backs against the Saints D on the right side and the Patriots receivers against the Saints D on the left. Officials were present and throwing flags as necessary.

* As soon as players from both teams squared off against each other there was a noticeable step-up in intensity.
* The Patriots offense looks sharp. New receiver Rod Owens took down a Saints defender for a pass interference call. Brandon Tate and Randy Moss each dropped one with Wes Welker and Julian Edelman making catches. That was followed by Moss, Gronkowski, Price, Aiken and Edelman all making catches on the Saints D.
* One goosebumps moment came when Welker slid on the grass a bit with his bad knee, but recovered and still made the catch.
* Rod Owens made an outstanding full-body-stretch catch to the appreciation of the crowd.
* It has to be stated that Aaron Hernandez has really, really nice hands and is catching almost everything easily, without any bobbling. Smooth. He also has a fiery personality, and is hyper-competitive. He's going to be a great addition to this offense.

9:45 AM - Full team-on-team special team scrimmages for punt work with Mesko getting some good experience with real pressure.

10:00 AM - Full inter-squad scrimmages.

* Drew Brees and backup QB Patrick Ramsey vs. Pats Defense.
* Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer vs. Saints Defense.
* Laurence Maroney had a 2 yards and stopped play, Green-Ellis and Fred Taylor had a couple of nice runs.
* Randy Moss caught a long bomb for a TD.
* Mike Wright committed a penalty, was pulled out and had to run a lap.
* James Sanders leaped up to break up a Ramsey pass.
* Darius Butler missed a Drew Brees pass to Saints WR Courtney Roby.
10:30 AM - Red Zone drills

* Brandon Meriweather broke up a Brees to TE Dave Thomas pass on third down.
* Randy Moss missed a catch in the end zone, but Aaron Hernandez caught the next one for a TD.
* Brady connected with Rob Gronkowski in the end zone.
* Stephen Gostkowski executed a fake field goal attempt for a shovel pass to Alge Crumpler for a 1st down.

Houston:

Dan's the man

Most of the starters aren't expected to play for more than a series, which means backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky is going to get extensive playing time on Saturday in the preseason opener against the Cardinals.

Players, coaches and fans are eager to see how much Orlovsky has improved since the 2009 preseason when he didn't play well and ended up being third on the depth chart behind Matt Schaub and Rex Grossman.

"He needs to play a bunch," coach Gary Kubiak said. "For backup quarterbacks, preseason is their season. "I also want to look at JD (John David Booty).

"Dan's a better player than he was last year. He still has some lapses, but he's an improved player. Now he's got to take it to the field and show the team."
Confident quarterback

Dan Orlovsky can't wait for Saturday and a chance to get extensive playing time against the Cardinals.

"I'm really confident going in," he said. "I'm going to transfer the things I've been able to do on the practice field into the game.

"I know I have to prove some things, but I'm not going to worry about those. I feel like camp has given me enough confidence to run the team. That's my thing, I'm not going to go try and run up the scoreboard or anything. I'm just going to go run the offense, run the plays, execute them the way they should be and let things take care of themselves."
Henry impresses

Running back Chris Henry, who has enjoyed an outstanding camp, wants the ball against the Cardinals. He wants to show the coaches what he can do.

"The place that he shows up to me is when the team is really dragging like today," coach Gary Kubiak said. "His conditioning level is tremendous. He's a physical player, so when everybody else seems to get a little worn out, he seems to get better and better."

Henry, 5-11, 234, runs in the 4.3s and practices as hard as any player on the team.

"We're hoping to get a good look at him through the preseason," Kubiak said.

To make the team as the fourth back behind Arian Foster,Steve Slaton and Ben Tate, Henry must excel on special teams.

Brennan ready for Dallas, Nnamdi free to roam

So it looks like the Raiders will see a heavy dose of Colt Brennan on Thursday. Charlie Frye is still out with injury as well as Bruce Gradkowski. Which means that Jason Campbell will start, work a series or two and hand the offense over the the second team led by Kyle Boller. Boller will likely work through the first half and perhaps a tad bit more. This will leave Brennan with quite a bit of game to play.

Brennan couldn't be more excited about his new opportunity either. Despite being in the league for two seasons, he has never seen the field in a regular seasonNFL game. He has barely even seen the field in a game since college, period.

"I have had four surgeries in 2 years and I think that made things hard for me. And when the new staff came in, I was there for two weeks and ended up needing another surgery-- my last of the four. It kind of prolonged my progress with [the Redskins]... I get to play football on Thursday in the NFL. That's a dream I've always wanted as a kid and I'm just trying to hold onto it."

And if simply getting his first snap in an NFL game wasn't enough, he is getting to trot out onto the field as a Raider, the team he group up watching as a native of Southern California.

"My dad had season tickets to the Raider game and some of our greatest stories when I was 6, 7, or 8 years old were going to games and experiencing the crowd and obviously there were some good years down there. The Silver and Black was always a big deal where I grew up. When they first gave me my helmet I was like 'Wow, this is kind of a surreal moment' and it was a fun moment thinking about going to all their games as a kid and now being a Raider. It's pretty awesome."

The thought of being thrown into a live game situation after just a few days with his new team can be a little nerve wracking for sure. Working in his favor are a few familiar faces. Jason Campbell and Rock Cartwright were teammates of his in Washington and Samson Satele was his center during his time at the University of Hawaii.

Hue Jackson and Tom Cable haven't thrown the whole playbook at him right away either. They have given him a few select plays to get his feet wet. But even so, Cable knows he has a player with a vast amount of experience at least at the college level. And he has faith that he can execute the throws he needs to execute.

"He came out of a much different system then maybe the pro style," Cable says of Brennan. "but the fact is he's thrown a million footballs. If you watch him he does a nice job of being able to put it on receivers, and lead them and time it up over the top. He has a knack for some of those things."

Brennan gave Cable plenty of reason to believe in him in practice today. As Cable said, he was really doing a nice job of leading his receivers on deep throws and dropping passes between defenders. His first nice pass he hit Todd Watkins in stride along the sideline with Stanford Routt defending. If the ball hadn't been perfectly in stride, Routt would likely have caught up to him. But as they say, there is no defense for a perfectly thrown ball.

Brennan was back at it shortly as he hit Shawn Bodiford along the left side and then showed he could make the same pass to the right side to Bodiford again. But his best pass was one that no one expected because one of Brennan's detractors was supposed to be that he didn't have big time NFL arm strength. But when he threw a beautiful long strike to Nick Miller that traveled a good 50 yards in the air, the dispelled that notion pretty quick.

At this moment, the third string quarterback job is between Kyle Boller and Colt Brennan. Both have showed flashes that they could earn the job. We have a lot of camp and 4 games still to play to see how things shake out. It should be interesting though.

____________

Dmac and Chaz among no-gos for Dallas

The oft injured pair will not be playing in the Raiders preseason opener against Dallas on Thursday. The injury to Darren McFadden will mean that Rock Cartwright and Michael Bennett have a substantial load for nearly the entire game as there is no one else behind them on the depth chart.

Chaz Schilens would have started along with Darrius Heyward-Bey but with him being out Louis Murphy will likely get the start on the right side. We will also have to wait to see Jacoby Ford as well as he has been scratched for the game.

With McFadden and Schilens out of the starting lineup, it will look as follows:

QB Jason Campbell, RB Michael Bush, FB Marcel Reece

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR Louis Murphy, TE Zach Miller

LT Mario Henderson, LG Robert Gallery, C Samson Satele, RG Cooper Carlisle, RT Langston Walker

Martellus Bennett and Sean Lee are out

The Cowboys will miss numerous players for Thursday's preseason game vs. the Oakland Raiders.

Martellus Bennett (ankle), Sean Lee (quad), Montrae Holland (hamstring), Dez Bryant (ankle), Alex Barron (ankle and finger), Scott Sicko (concussion), John Phillips (knee), Pat Watkins (knee), Cletis Gordon (neck), Sean Lissemore (groin), Marcus Spears (knee), Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (shoulder) and Stephen Hodge (knee) will not play Thursday.

Bryan McCann, who suffered a chest injury in Sunday's preseason opener vs. Cincinnati, returned to practice on Wednesday. Coach Wade Phillips said he's not sure if McCann (sore chest) will play on Thursday.

Gordon said he's getting a range of motion in his neck and said he's not sure if he'll make the first practice in Oxnard, Calif. on Saturday. Friday will be two weeks that Bryant has used a walking boot to help in the healing process of his ankle. Phillips said he's not sure if it will come off. If the boot comes of on Friday, Bryant can begin the rehab process in Oxnard.

__________

The Cowboys won't show their entire offensive package, especially in the red zone and with the tight end depth an issue, scoring inside the 20 could be problematic.

"I know it?s a fine line because you always want to be perfect but we also can't," Romo said. "It's not smart to go out there and do all the stuff, you?ve taken the approach in the offseason, and show [in the games]. So I'm sure we?ll stay vanilla and we still want to execute with that. If you fall short of that, it's part of the team learning and you can get better the next time you go out there."

Cowboys' first-team offense to get more work Thursday vs. Oakland

The Cowboys' first-team offense will play more than the 14 snaps it got Sunday against Cincinnati, but perhaps not that much longer Thursday vs. Oakland.

Wade Phillips said the lack of tight ends will not mean Jason Witten will play more or less against the Raiders. The No. 1 offense had to settle for a David Buehler field goal against the Bengals after stalling deep inside Cincinnati territory.

"I'm sure we'll stay vanilla," quarterback Tony Romo said. "You still want to execute and if you fall short it's part of the team learning and you can get better the next time ... When we get in the red zone we just have to do it without everything at our disposal."

After looking at the tape, Romo said the Bengals brought pressure in more than half of the snaps, which is surprising for a preseason game.

"You're not going to see that much in 14 of the 16 games in the regular season," Romo said. "For the first preseason game, that's good. It was good for us to handle it. We picked up things we'd not seen in camp and we were on the same page as far as communicating."

With Gradkowski and Frye out, that means former Hawaii and Redskins quarterback Colt Brennan will play. He will come in after Campbell plays the first quarter and Kyle Boller likely plays the second and third.

Cowboys : What to Watch For

Here's what to be looking for tonight against Oakland:

Execution by the first-team offense.

I don't care about playcalling right now even if every major news publication and network has spent the past four days tearing apart thee Cowboys approach in the red zone on Sunday night. If that was a real game, I highly doubt that Jason Garrett would have called three straight pass plays from the two-yard line. What interested me more about those plays -- and worried me -- was about the actual execution of the plays that were called.

Jason Garrett can call whatever plays he wants to tonight and I won't care. I don't know if the Cowboys are looking to work on a specific part of the playbook or personnel package; I certainly don't have that sort of insight so I won't read into what plays are called and when. Instead, what I want to see is crisper execution of the offense than what we saw Sunday; no failed communications between quarterback and receiver, no give up throwaways and certainly no defenders running wild in the backfield.

Jason Hatcher

This is Hatcher's moment to shine as he takes over temporarily for an injured Marcus Spears and Sunday he failed to take advantage. He certainly didn't appear to be an upgrade over Spears and was barely a factor in either the run game or the pass rush. It's likely that Hatcher is still feeling the effects of his elbow injury, which would explain his inability to shed blockers against Cincy.

Hatcher won't be replaced by Stephen Bowen, who the Cowboys love in the nickel, but Hatcher is trying to prove that he could possibly be a full time replacement for Spears in the future. I'll give him a pass for one game but I'm looking to see some improvement tonight.

Chris Gronkowski

With the Cowboys losing John Phillips for the season there's been debate as to how the Cowboys will adjust their offense accordingly. Garrett relied on three tight ends on a regular rotation in his offense, with the third TE being a hybrid FB-HB-TE. Phillips was easily perfecting this position, starting last season and into camp this summer. With Phillips out and the team apparently not confident that Scott Sicko can step into that role, it seems the team is contemplating entering the season with two fullbacks and two tight ends on the active roster.

The key to this plan would be Chris Gronkowski. The fullback has shown improvement throughout camp in his blocking technique and power and the word is that he is a smooth route-runner and receiver. So instead of having a tight end take on fullback duties, the Cowboys will be asking a fullback to take on a bit more of a tight end role. Don't expect another Moose out of the backfield, but if Gronkowski can show the ability to perform admirably in this role then the Cowboys won't have to alter their offense as much. His first test is tonight.

The sixth wide receiver

There's a good chance that the Cowboys look to keep a sixth receiver on the active roster this year and there is certainly a good chance that player might not be Sam Hurd. Hurd has been a special teams staple the past few years but his $1.8 million price tag this season could make him expendable, especially if a cheaper and younger receiver proves to be able to do just as good a job.

Titus Ryan is gone and I didn't see Manuel Johnson do anything of note against the Bengals. Who I did notice on more than one occasion was reality TV star Jesse Holley, who made plays both as a receiver and on special teams. Holley has been praised nearly all camp long by those in attendance while it seems that Hurd has failed to impress, including dropping several balls during camp and against the Bengals. Out of nowhere, it appears there is a battle for the final receiver spot and Holley is showing he wants it more.

Once again the backups will see a lot of time on the field tonight and Holley and Hurd will get their chance to prove themselves. It will be interesting to see who shines.

Danny McCray

Coming into camp it seemed all of the focus -- in regards to the reserve safety position -- was on Barry Church and whether he could supplant Pat Watkins for that final safety spot. Church has certainly had a solid camp and had an overall solid game on Sunday but it was Danny McCray who I noticed the most.

McCray was all over the field, both on defense and special teams, making plays against the run while intercepting a pass and knocking down another. Apparently McCray has really been impressive in camp and while Church has been solid it's the guys that make the plays in games that ultimately make the team. McCray was perhaps the best player on special teams on Sunday which bodes well for his chances if he keeps it up. I want to see McCray do this consistently and see if the game against Cincy was just a fluke; if he continues to make plays he could be a surprise addition to the gameday roster.

Josh Brent

Brent could be considered the defensive MVP in the game on Sunday. He was explosive, he was smart and he showed the power and quickness you expect from a backup nose tackle. In short, he was everything we've been hoping to get from Junior Siavii.

Brent is raw but you can instantly see why the Cowboys took a risk by drafting him with a supplemental pick. He has all the tools you could want in a nose tackle and has the motor and the tenacity that defines the Dallas Cowboys defense. If he can continue to show that aggression and that playmaking ability, while still adapting to playing with a broken finger, then he's well on his way to a roster spot.

keeping an eye as well on Leon and Jason Williams, David Beuhler (of course) and I am terrified of what is going to happen with Brewster playing for most of the game at left tackle. I am also hoping to see Stephen McGee continue to improve.

bears...

Lovie Smith has not yet determined how long Bears starters will play Saturday night.

?We?re going to meet on that tonight a little bit,? Smith said. ?But for the most part our game plan as far as playing them has been a quarter or so the first game, the second game until the half and then into the third quarter the third game. This year with a new offense and all, we may play the guys a little bit more. But we haven?t made all those decisions yet.?

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler insists that he won?t lobby for extra playing time.

?Whatever they decide,? he said. ?I think it is important to get out there and get some plays and get some rhythm, but if we start off hot and we get off the field, we get off the field.?

Cutler?s goals for Saturday night?s game aren?t too complex, especially given that the Bears typically don?t game plan for opponents in the preseason.

?We?ve got to get in and out of the huddle, set a good tempo, and we don?t want any missed assignments,? he said. ?There are going to be some things that we probably haven?t seen before. It?s a 3-4 defense. We?ve gone against a 4-3 the last two weeks.

?We?re not preparing for this. This isn?t a real game for us. We just want to go out there and take care of ourselves.?

Buffalo...

Based on what was witnessed in the team?s Wednesday night practice, there?s a strong likelihood that Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the next quarterback on the field Friday after Trent Edwards? night is over.

Fitz was the only other quarterback besides Edwards to take reps in the shortened Wednesday night practice session, giving strong indication that he?ll be the backup in the Redskins game. It?s certainly possible that Brohm will be the backup in the next preseason game in Toronto against Indy, since he and Fitzpatrick have split reps with the second unit pretty much down the middle for the majority of camp.

We?ll try to get it confirmed that Fitz is the backup prior to kickoff Friday night.

Lions yet to determine Matthew Stafford's minutes in exhibition play

This time last year, the Lions still were trying to decide between Matthew Stafford and Daunte Culpepper as team's starting QB.

There's none of that this year.

Stafford is the starter and will start Saturday's exhibition opener against the Steelers. What happens after that, Schwartz hasn't decided.

"A lot of that depends on the game situation and how the reps come out," Schwartz said about his quarterback rotation for Saturday. "I've never been a big quarter's type guy. We'll target a number of plays for each guy and manage where injuries are, offensive line and skill players and all those different things."
