ANDERSON UP, HILL DOWN

In a move that had been expected Tuesday, the Cardinals today recalled catcher Bryan Anderson from Class AAA Memphis and sent catcher Steven Hill to that club.

Andeson, who has been in Class AAA for three seasons, offers more experience as a backup to regular catcher Yadier Molina now that veteran receiver Jason LaRue is on the disabled list with a concussion.

Molina is making his 21st consecutive start this afternoon against Milwaukee.

Anderson, showing more power than in previous minor league seasons, had 12 homers and 42 runs batted in at Memphis. He was two for seven (.286) in an earlier trial here this season.

Hill, who had been brought up from Class AA Springfield as a stopgap when LaRue was hurt in a brawl last week in Cincinnati, homered in his second big-league at-bat on Sunday.

Adam Wainwright seeks a major-league high 18th victory today for the Cardinals against Milwaukee lefthander Randy Wolf. The teams have split eight meetings in St. Louis this season, with today's game the last time the teams will play here this year.

The Cardinals have three games remaining in Milwaukee in early September.

PITCHING FOR THE CARDINALS: Adam Wainwright (17-6, 1.99 ERA): He has done OK against the Brewers this season, winning both starts with a complete game. He has allowed one run in 18 innings, with 17 strikeouts and just one walk.

Wainwright has done well against most of the key Brewers during his career, including Casey McGehee (1 for 12) Alcides Escobar (2 for 12), Rickie Weeks (4 for 24), Ryan Braun (7 for 38) and Prince Fielder (6 for 35, 13 strikeouts).

PITCHING FOR THE BREWERS: Randy Wolf (9-9, 4.86 ERA): Yovani Gallardo has been just awful against the Cards this season, going 0-2 with 12 runs allowed (seven earned) in 7 2/3 innings. So it was best to call on Wolf for this start.

Brendan Ryan (6 for 13, double, RBI), Nick Stavinoha (3 for 6, double) and Albert Pujols (8 for 25, double, two homers, eight RBIs) have all hit Wolf well.
