Dasher's situation 'not a distraction'

MTSU football coach Rick Stockstill said quarterback Dwight Dasher's recent off-the-field issues are "not a distraction within the team."

Dasher is the focus of an "ongoing inquiry" by university officials and part of an MTSU Police investigation. Dasher is accused of not repaying a loan, according to an incident report on file with campus police, and stealing checks from teammate Colin Boss to use as collateral for that loan.

No formal charges of any kind have been filed against Dasher by any individual or law enforcement agency.

Stockstill said Dasher is still a part of the team. His playing status for MTSU's Sept. 2 season opener against Minnesota has not been determined, as university officials continue to gather information.

Stockstill said Dasher's situation has not affected the team's focus on the upcoming season.

"This is not a distraction within the team. I can promise you that," Stockstill said. "We have good senior leadership in there, and I've talked to the seniors about it. And not only that, but I've talked to the underclassmen about it. I'm not concerned about a 'woe is me' (attitude) or guys getting down or losing any leadership we have on this team.

"To me, any time you have a situation with one of your players, it's never good timing. The timing is not very good, but we have to deal with it. ... We're looking into everything and I'm hopeful that we will have a conclusion to everything pretty soon."

MTSU athletic director Chris Massaro said the university is still gathering information on Dasher's situation.

"In this kind of inquiry, one question might lead to two more questions," Massaro said. " ... Generally what happens when you get any kind of report where there could potentially be any kind of NCAA issue, the basic protocol is to self report that. We also notify the conference office."

Dasher receiving money from 80-year-old Oliver Donnell, which was allegedly a $1,500 loan, led to the inquiry. Massaro would not say who is conducting the inquiry.

MTSU's intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night was canceled due to inclement weather. Stockstill said Dasher will continue to practice with the team, but he likely would not have played in the scrimmage, per a previous plan to rest numerous starters.

Aside from Dasher, MTSU has only two full-time quarterbacks on the roster ? junior college transfers Logan Kilgore and Jeff Murphy. Neither has played in a Division I game.

Stockstill said Dasher, Kilgore and Murphy will divide reps when the team returns to the practice field.

"They have all been getting about the same. Dwight, Logan and Jeff, if you break down the film, they have probably gotten all about an equal amount of reps," Stockstill said. "I don't plan on doing anything different in practice right now.

" ... The next time we go, (Dasher) will be out there practicing, but I'm hopeful that we'll have a conclusion to this."

MTSU Police Chief Buddy Peaster did not return phone messages to his office on Friday and Saturday. RCSO Deputy Chief Virgil Gammon told The DNJ the sheriff's office is not investigating the matter. Security at York VA Medical Center, where Donnell is a patient, also are not investigating Dasher.

Donnell filed the report of the unpaid loan to campus police on July 27. Stockstill said he learned of allegations against Dasher "at the end of July or first of August, whenever it came out."

Separately, Dasher filed a June 22 incident report with campus police, alleging someone fraudulently used his credit/student financial aid debit card with "an estimated value allegedly (of) $1,000."

MTSU athletic communications director Mark Owens said Dasher and Boss, as well as other players, would not be made available for comment on the situation.

Stockstill said he has no concerns about the MTSU football program's image being tarnished by the allegations against Dasher.

"We run a first class program here, and I have 100 percent confidence in everything we do and everything this program and university stands for. I have no concerns at all about that," Stockstill said.

"As a coach, you get in it to help people. I want to try to help Dwight. Yeah, football is important, and I'm ultimately judged for wins and losses. But my personal goal is (to help) these young men be good fathers, be good husbands and good people in the community," continued Stockstill. "That's the challenge every coach in America is faced with when you have 100 young men. This is an opportunity for me to help Dwight learn."
