To show allegiance to their favorite teams, fans have long painted their cheeks, sometimes even their bare chests. Soon they can paint their lawn.
?Lawn Logo? is about to hit the market, and as the New Jersey-based company behind it touts, ?suburbia may never look the same.?
Starting with 14 major league teams, do-it-yourself kits first will be sold for an unspecified introductory price on QVC on Aug. 31. They will be sold at select retailers, including True Value and Ace hardware stores, with a suggested retail price of $129.99.
The kits, officially licensed by Major League Baseball, include a 52-inch reusable stencil and enough spray paint, in the team?s official colors and designed for grass, for several applications. There is no guarantee, of course, that the kits will not be used to paint the sides of houses, abandoned buildings or subway cars.
The company behind Lawn Logo is Stadium Associates, which last year introduced ?Yankees Sod? and sod from other teams ? turf cut from the same sod farms used for various baseball stadiums.
Stadium Associates also sells memorabilia-sized ?game-used? sod from major events, such as the World Series, Super Bowl and college football national championship game.
?We connect fans to their teams through grass,? said David Andres, Stadium Associates? chief executive, using a company catch-phrase.
The 14 major league teams chosen are in the biggest markets or have postseason hopes. They include the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and Phillies. All teams will be available in 2011, the company said. Stadium Associates has Lawn Logo plans for the N.F.L., college sports, even Nascar.
