? The Utah State Aggies could set themselves up for a special season with a win over Fresno State on Saturday night at Romney Stadium.

A victory would loudly proclaim USU a contender in the Western Athletic Conference. It would easily serve as Utah State?s biggest football triumph in years and would provide proof that the optimism surrounding the team during the summer was well deserved.

Conversely, a loss could potentially set the Aggies back, especially with a road game at San Diego State and a showdown with Brigham Young University looming in the next few weeks. In what is the inaugural game for the new WAC Sports Network ? a consortium of affiliates in WAC markets ? Saturday?s game will serve as a huge barometer for USU. And it?s rare that you can say that about a game three weeks into a season.

?This is huge for us,? Aggies linebacker Bobby Wagner said. ?At the same time, we have to come out and play well. We have to concentrate on us. We can?t let ourselves fall to the hype.?

USU knows what?s ahead of it, what it?s getting into against the Bulldogs. Fresno State soundly defeated Cincinnati 28-14 in the first game of the season, a contest in which the Bulldogs reeled off the final four touchdowns of the game.

In that game, FSU quarterback Ryan Colburn proved exceptional against the Bearcats, who have made consecutive BCS Bowl appearances. Against USU, he will have a deep contingent of receivers to throw to, further testing the Aggies? secondary.

?I think he?s one of the best quarterbacks in the conference,? USU coach Gary Andersen said. ?He made a play against Cincinnati where he looked off the wideout and he threw the ball down the field. That shows he?s a good quarterback and is in command of that offense. Down two scores, a veteran quarterback doesn?t panic. He made some plays and tied the game up by halftime. I thought he made some great plays.?

Of course, in Diondre Borel, USU has arguably the best player on the field, and one who can take over a game with his passing and with his legs. The question will be how much time he gets to throw against one of the best defensive fronts in the country.

The Bulldogs come into Saturday leading the country in sacks per game with eight against the Bearcats. If the Aggie offensive line can give Borel time to throw, USU will conceivably have a significant advantage. If not, Utah State could be in some trouble.

Either way, a close game is expected on Saturday with the last two games between the two teams having been decided by a total of five points.

GameDay breakdown: Fresno State @ Utah State

FRESNO STATE ON OFFENSE
The offensive line will look to redeem itself after a lightweight running performance against Cincinnati gained just 49 yards. It was the first time the Bulldogs failed to rush for more than 50 yards since Boise State held them to 17 in 2004.

Running back A.J. Ellis likely will get the majority of carries in place of the injured Robbie Rouse, with Michael Harris and Tracy Slocum carrying the rock as well. Also blocking for the backs will be first-year starting fullback Austin Raphael.

Receiver Jalen Saunders will fill in for Devon Wylie at wideout, with Jamel Hamler and Rashad Evans as the top targets.

Senior starter Ryan Colburn threw touchdowns to four different players and tossed one interception against the Bearcats and will look to make some more plays against a secondary that starts three seniors and one junior.

FRESNO STATE ON DEFENSE

The front four had a monster day against Cincinnati, tallying seven sacks. Linebacker Travis Brown added one to give the "D" a total of eight. The Bulldogs' biggest challenge will come from Aggies quarterback Diondre Borel, an elusive pass/run threat.

EXTRA POINTS

Kicker Kevin Goessling was 4 for 4 on extra points against Cincinnati but did not attempt a field goal. He also picked up kickoff duties from Andrew Shapiro, who is now focusing on punts. Look for Evans, Saunders and Hamler as the main returners. All have speed and moves.

UTAH STATE ON OFFENSE

Diondre Borel is this offense's main threat and the posterboy for all that is good with the Aggies' program. He not only has the offense on his shoulders but also the program's hopes of returning to prominence this season.

Borel is 15th nationally so far this year with an average of 305 total yards per game and will hand off to a trio of running backs: Michael Smith, Kerwynn Williams and Derrvin Speight. His top receiving targets will be Dontel Watkins, Xavier Martin and Eric Moats. If the Aggies hadn't suffered injuries to running back Robert Turbin, and receivers Matt Austin and Stanley Morrison (their top three playmakers outside of Borel), they would be in much better shape this season.

UTAH STATE ON DEFENSE

It looks like linebacker Junior Keiaho will be out for this game because of an injury, leaving a hole in the Aggies' defense. Gavin Jones will be his likely replacement.

After allowing Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray to run for more than 200 yards in a near defeat of the then-No.7 Sooners, the Aggies defense tightened against FCS opponent Idaho State. The Aggies defensive starters allowed only three points to the Bengals.

EXTRA POINTS

Senior Peter Caldwell replaces Chris Ulinski as Utah State's kicker. He is 2 of 4 this season in field goals, missing from 50 against Oklahoma and 30 against Idaho State. He was the Aggies' punter last season, leading the WAC with a 42.2 yards-per-punt average.

KEY MATCHUPS

Fresno State's defensive line vs. Utah State quarterback Diondre Borel

"The defensive line's where you win," coach Pat Hill said to his defensive line as they headed off the field Friday. It is especially true when you need the line to contain a quarterback as elusive and explosive as Borel. If the Bulldogs can pressure Borel, keep him out of rhythm and keep him from breaking loose on runs, this game goes to the 'Dogs.

Edge: Based on the line's performance in the opener against Cincinnati ... Fresno State

Fresno State offensive line vs. Utah State defensive line

The Bulldogs' offensive line, its most experienced unit, was not pleased with its performance against Cincinnati and will look to come out in a more aggressive -- and effective -- way tonight. If they can get the running game going, the Bulldogs' offense should cruise.
