Check out Corey Robinson's high school football resume and one question quickly pops up.

Is it possible to throw 91 touch*downs in one season? For the record, Robinson, now the starting quarterback for Larry Blakeney at Troy, set a national high school record as a senior at Lone Oak High in Paducah, Ky., by throwing 91 touchdown passes in a 15-game season that ended with an appearance in the 2007 Class 4A title game.

How impressive is that?

"Hey, it's hard to throw that many touchdown passes against air," said Blakeney, whose team will venture to Legion Field on Sat*urday for a nonconference game against in-state foe UAB.

Robinson, who was selected as Mr. Football in Kentucky, finished the season with 5,872 passing yards and threw only four inter*ceptions for a team that lost to Lexington Catholic in the state title game. None of the interceptions came in the final 10 games of the season.

"I had a lot of good guys around me," Robinson said. "We all grew up together so it was a family type thing for us. We told ourselves as freshmen that we wanted to play for a state championship as a senior. We just worked really hard over the summer and we got lucky."

Heavy recruiting attention didn't follow for Robinson, who is now listed at 6 feet tall and 214 pounds.

He received some attention from Sun Belt Conference schools and said "Ole Miss was talking to me a little bit here and there." Troy knew about Robinson because then-offensive coordinator Tony Franklin was a good friend of Lone Oak High head coach Jack Haskins, whose son Billy Jack is a former University of Kentucky quarterback. Lone Oak ran an offense similar to Troy's and Robinson felt comfortable in choosing the Trojans.

It wasn't a quick journey to the field as a college player for Robinson. He spent the 2008 season as greyshirt and a part-time student at Troy.

"Being from Kentucky, it was a little bit tough not knowing many people around here but you just got to keep your mind on that it will pay off in the future," Robinson said.

He used his redshirt season last year but kept busy by watching and learning from standout quarterback Levi Brown, who is searching for an NFL job now after a college career that included 6,417 yards and 43 touchdowns.

Blakeney said the two years waiting his turn were helpful in Robinson's quest to claim the starting quarterback job. He eventually won a narrow decision over junior Jamie Hampton after competing during spring practice and fall camp.

"It's what every freshman needs to do," Blakeney said. "The only thing better than greyshirting and redshirting a kid would be five (years) to play five. There's no way the academians are ever going to let us do that."

Robinson's first two weeks have been a mixture of solid play and mistakes due to inexperience. He is 53-of-76 for 524 yards with four touchdowns but also threw two interceptions in the first half of the win over Bowling Green and lost a pair of fumbles against Oklahoma State. Robinson said everything is a learning experience right now.

"I made a couple of mistakes the first game against Bowling Green but luckily we pulled that one out," Robinson said. "This past week it was a big thing going to a Big 12 school and playing in front of that many people. Being from a small high school, we didn't even have that many people in our town. It was a great time. It showed that we have a lot of heart on this team and definitely some talent."

Blazer Buzz: UAB vs. Troy at Legion Field

This game will determine . . .

If UAB can avoid dropping the first three games of the season for just the fourth time in school history. The most recent time came in 2008 with season-opening losses to Tulsa, Florida Atlantic and Tennessee.

Three things to look for:

1.The success of UAB quarterback Da*vid Isabelle. It figures that Troy will commit to stopping Isabelle from beating the Trojans with the run. If so, then the UAB passing game needs to make the plays that the Blazers haven't been able to make the first two weeks. If the Blazers do the need the pass, will backup quarterback Bryan Ellis see more playing time?

2.

Will UAB tight end Jeffery Ander*son become a bigger part of the offensive plan? Anderson has one catch in two games. That's inexcusable for a player who should be one of the busiest of*fensive players on the field.

3.Can UAB's defense make Troy's of*fense one-dimensional? The Trojans have success running the ball and throwing the ball. Taking one of those away would certainly help the Blazers.

Key matchup:

Troy center Tyler Clark vs. UAB defensive tackle Elliott Henigan. UAB's defense is much more effective when the talented Henigan causes problems. Clark is one of Troy's best offensive linemen.

By the numbers:

21.4 -- Average margin of victory in the seven games played between these two schools. Take away UAB's 27-26 win in 2002 and every game has been decided by dou*ble digits. Troy leads the series, 4-3.

Significant injuries:

UAB -- WR Nick Adams (Achilles' tendon, out), WR Roddell Carter (shoulder, ques*tionable), CB Marquis Coleman (undis*closed, questionable), CB T.J. Ballou (knee, probable).

Troy -- S Barry Valcin (ankle, out), LB Johnny Thompson (leg, out), LB Ka*norris Davis (ribs, questionable).

Game preview: Troy

FOUR-DOWN TERRITORY

1. In-state rivalries are seldom friendly, but this one doesn't seem to have the animosity of most gridiron tussles. UAB and Troy don't often recruit the same players or even the same areas, allowing the coaches to remain good friends. Troy coach Larry Blakeney and UAB coach Neil Callaway play together on the same golf team every spring, renewing a friendship they had as former colleagues on Auburn's coaching staff.

2. The UAB roster includes a pair of former Troy players who will relish today's matchup. Senior running back Justin Brooks, who will see playing time today, was on Troy's 2006 team before transferring after the season. Redshirt freshman receiver Bryan Taylor, another former Trojan, joined Brooks over the summer before the 2007 season. Another interesting angle is that of Troy receiver Tebiarus Gill, who originally committed to UAB.

3. UAB coaches are home grown like many of the Troy coaches, although few of them have ties to the Birmingham school. Eric Schumann and Corey Barlow are former Auburn players, while Callaway, Will Friend and Tim Bowens are former Alabama players. Linebackers coach Tyson Summers also worked for Blakeney as a graduate assistant at Troy.

4. The Trojans had four costly turnovers, including two fumbles by Jerrel Jernigan, in last week's loss at Oklahoma State, but kept the game close by forcing five turnovers. Since 2000, Troy has forced a turnover in all but 16 games, compiling a 1-15 record in those contests where they have failed to record a takeaway. Since joining the BCS in 2001, the Trojans are among the best in the nation in forcing turnovers.

KEY MATCHUPS

FS Chris Pickett vs. QB David Isabelle

Pickett was a running back in high school, worked out in August as a cornerback and is now playing safety. The true freshman will face a tough challenge this week as he tries to read UAB quarterback David Isabelle, an athlete who may run the ball at any second. Pickett must be ready to play the run in order to limit Isabelle's effectiveness, but can't get caught up providing run support and fail to cover the pass.

Jonathan Massaquoi, DE (So., 6-2, 250)

A high-energy player described by defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell as "relentless," Massaquoi had eight tackles against Oklahoma State, including two for losses, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. He currently ranks as the leading tackler among defensive linemen and is fourth on the team with 11 stops.

BY THE NUMBERS

2: Punt returns for score by opponents against the Trojans this season. Both Bowling Green and Oklahoma State returned punts for touchdowns, snapping a string for Troy of 59 games without a punt return for a touchdown.

=============

Troy has put together two fine offensive performances against two of the best teams on its schedule, so there's no reason to think the Trojans will take a week off from scoring points against a UAB defense that has been surrendering them this season. The Trojans may face a few problems corralling Isabelle, but it shouldn't keep them from beating the Blazers.
